The composition of the novel by the modern English writer P. Ackroyd “The Plato Papers” in connection with the problems of the work is considered. The review of the last researches devoted to creativity of this author is given. Attention is paid to how the work reveals the problem of interpretation of history, its ambiguity, the concept of the movement of time, progress, the relationship of the past, present and future. The author shows that when shifting the time of the novel in the future, Ackroyd uses the documentary imitation technique, changes narrators and types of narration. The composition of the work consisting of separate small parts connected in a key way by the speaker Plato is analyzed. Such properties of the composition of the analyzed novel as fragmentation and nonlinearity are noted. It is shown how the novel realizes postmodern idea about the relativity of the interpretations of the events of the past. The position of the main character endowed with the gift of insight, able to penetrate into the past, to look from an unusual point of view at the present, to doubt and seek the truth is revealed. more...

The paper is dedicated to the activities of the Ossetian Historical and Philological Society for the preservation and study of the creative heritage of a outstanding public figure, journalist, artist, founder of Ossetian literature Kosta Levanovich Khetagurov. This chapter is a short history of the breakthrough idea proposed by Eugene Garfield to use citations analysis for scholarly information search. It describes how he turned this idea into reality, through creation of Science Citation Index and other information resources and tools. The chapter further discusses the usage of citation analysis for the study of cognitive structure of science, collaboration networks, informal and formal scholarly communications, and research evaluation. The chapter covers the development of scientometrics as a scholarly discipline, with a special focus on development of scientometrics in Russia. The role of the Internet in development of modern scientometric resources is considered, particularly of the Web of Science platform. Finally, the growing demand for scientomeric tools as means of research assessment for government bodies, universities, and research institutions is discussed. In the 17th century, St. Ibar, Ailbe, Ciaran, and Declan were called quattuor sanctissimi episcopi (‘the four most holy bishops’). It is thought that they played a pivotal role in the conversion of Ireland, especially its southern parts, and were preaching Christianity there before or at the same time as St. Patrick. We learn about them from a number of sources, including Vitae Sanctorum Hiberniae, Martyrology of Oengus, Martyrology of Donegal, Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland by the Four Masters, Book of Leinster, and Speckled Book. They are the founders of monasteries and the episcopal sees in Saigir (St. Ciaran), Emly (St. Ailbe), and Ardmore (St. Declan). St. Ibar founded the monastery on the Isle of Begerin. Their veneration is slowly building up again. The paper represents an attempt at systemising what we know about "the four bishops" from their Lives, the annals, and other sources mentioning them. The aim of the article is to place the aforementioned Saints within the life of the Irish society and Church; distill their distinctive features, spiritual, and social role within the early Medieval Church of Ireland (by analysing narrative patterns, genealogies, and mentions); and describe the development of their modern-day cult. While not claiming to present a definitive and exhaustive answer to these questions, the present paper is nevertheless part of an ongoing research into the subject. more...

The paper deals with diverse theoretical understanding of ensuring the criminological security of minors on the international level, and analyzes the regulation of the protection of children's rights. The paper focuses on formulating the conceptual framework of international legal protection of minors. It is proposed to introduce the author's concept of international legal protection of minors. The international legal protection of minors should be understood as a system of normative acts that entrench the rights and freedoms of children, the obligations of the states to exercise these rights and freedoms; as well as international mechanisms for monitoring the fulfillment by the states of their international obligations and protection of the violated rights of each particular minor. The study explores the history of the international legal protection of the rights of minors. It is noted that the international community has adopted a number of normative acts to ensure children’s rights, to prevent juvenile delinquency, the treatment of juvenile offenders, exercising justice. In particular, when it comes to juvenile offenders, the norms of international law are actually the policy of treating such children. At the same time, the key idea of all international legal acts in combating juvenile delinquency is recognizing the priority of preventive measures over punitive ones. Attention is drawn to the fact that due to globalization, no country will be able to fight crime effectively on its own, coordinated efforts of the entire international community are needed. At the same time, the useful law enforcement practices of foreign countries with regard to child protection should be of no less interest. It seems that the Russian Federation should attempt to decrease the level of punishment and incarceration. more...

The paper deals with the Transcaucasian prehistoric period in the history of the ancestors of the Chuvash people. Goals. The study aims to identify and analyse the sources and literature on the topic relating to events of the 7th to 1st centuries BC. Materials and methods. The work employs a complex approach to the examination of the material, which made it possible to analyse the sources and the thoughts of predecessors consistently and systematically. The study focuses on works of historians, ethnographers and linguists about the ethnic groups that previously inhabited and now inhabit the areas to the south of the Greater Caucasus. The sources that proved important include the works by such historians as Herodotus (5th century BC), Apollonius of Rhodes (3rd c. BC), Pseudo-Orpheus (4th c. AD), Priscus Panionensis (5th c.), Menander Protector and Stephanus of Byzantium (both 6th c.). The paper also makes use of some pronouncements by such remarkable researchers as Andrey Golovnev, Sergey Arutyunov, Alikber Alikberov, Nicholas Berdzenishvili, Vera Budanova, Murtazali Gadzhiev, and David Muskhelishvili. Results. Impartial investigation shows that the ethnonym of the Chuvash has undergone a lengthy course of transformation through history in the form of Savir (Saspir/Sapir, Savar, Sabir) → Suvar (Suvas, Suvan) → Suvash → T’šăvaš (Chuvash). As far back as the 7th century BC, to the southeast of Colchis a large confederation of tribes headed by the Saspirs came into being. The study reveals and confirms traces in the pre-history of the distant ancestors of the Chuvash that are shared with the peoples of Georgia. In the period under examination, the historical forerunners of the Chuvash lived in a territory between Media and Colchis, between the Medes and the Colchians. In the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD, they were recorded to inhabit the Chorokh River valley. Alongside historical events, the publication traces ethnographic parallels with the ancient Georgian peoples and some shared elements of vocabulary. more...

This paper takes a fresh look at the sources of Leo the Deacon and comments on what has been written about them by other Byzantinists. It will also study Leo the Deacon’s style of writing, which is certainly innovative, since the History he authored stands apart from the historiographical works that preceded it, as it seeks to meld the new historiography that had emerged from the circle of Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos with the classical tradition. And Leo blazes new trails by praising specific individuals, the vast majority of them military men, around whose actions and achievements - on the field of battle, in the main - his narrative near exclusively revolves. The paper then goes on to indicate that one of the most important texts that has been identified as a source of Leo’s History is the Pophyrogennetos’ vast collection conventionally labelled the Excerpta Constantiniana; the Excerpta are then re-evaluated, particularly in terms of their links to Leo, which turn out to be close, as a number of examples illustrate. more...

The 1920s and 30s marked a pivotal period for the genesis of the modern Jewish state and its historical narrative. It was during this era that the Zionist paradigm of Jewish history took shape, serving as the cornerstone of collective memory and the bedrock of national identity for successive generations of Israelis. The initial cohort of Zionist historians astutely grasped the pivotal role of historical scholarship in shaping a national identity, particularly in advancing the Zionist ambition of rejuvenating the Jewish state and cultivating a novel Jewish identity - the Israeli identity. In pursuit of these aspirations, Zionist historians grappled with formidable challenges, chiefly centered around establishing a scholarly foundation validating the unity of the Jewish people and their enduring connection to the land of Israel, known as Eretz Israel. This paper endeavors to delineate the defining traits of Zionist historians during this epoch, drawing upon the prominent figure exemplifying this ethos, Professor Ben-Zion Dinur who endeavored to harmonize ideological allegiance with scholarly veracity. Furthermore, the paper delves into the fundamental elements comprising the Zionist narrative within Jewish history. more...

Introduction. The paper examines collections of rare Mongolian-language Christian editions housed at depositories of Zabaykalsky Krai and Buryatia. Goals. The study attempts a socioarchaeographic analysis of the mentioned collections at the Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies (SB RAS) and the Kuznetsov Zabaykalsky Krai Museum of Local History and Lore. Materials and methods. In terms of methodology, the work rests on ‘cognitive history’ and some aspects of historical phenomenology. The paper assumes a content analysis of the collections be instrumental both in identifying Christian Buryat readers’ queries throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, and in revealing specificities of missionary activity among Mongolic peoples in pre-revolutionary Russia. Conclusions. The content analysis of the two collections shows Transbaikalia was witnessing a specific cooperation between Protestant and Orthodox Christian missions. Personal libraries of Buryat Christians were largely compiled from Mongolian translations of the Bible funded mainly by the Protestant missions. The study attests to that the most promising missionary activity among Buryats (and Mongols at large) — dissemination of Christianity via primary education — was not supported by representatives of the missions. Our insights into the history of the collections show that results of Christian missionary translation activities aroused interest of Buryat Buddhists, and the latter tended to include such biblical translations into their libraries. Due to linguistic and historical circumstances, the Russian collections of Mongolian-language Christian publications have remained virtually unattended — both in terms of bibliographic description and scholarly research — for a long time. However, territorial, manufacturing and historical circumstances make the examined editions essentially unique. Our content analysis confirms there is a need for such investigations to reveal a coherent agenda of religious publications once used for the development of Christianity within Mongolian culture. more...

This review offers analytic information on the interdisciplinary conference held in Bulgaria (with participants from Northern Macedonia, Russia, Germany, India) on the socialist period as perceived through the fi ve senses. All the papers took into account relevant binary oppositions such as “self — others”, “socialist — capitalist”, “holiday — everyday life”, “home — offi ce space”, and “Bulgarian — Turkish”. There were many papers dedicated the sense of taste, and these discussed socialist-period tastes, culinary practices, and typical and non-typical menus at home and outside the home. The visual medium was approached using the contexts of fashion, interiors, and souvenir production, with or without an ideological aura. Discussions confi rmed the main thesis of the organisers that in ethnology the role of refl ection and personal experience is growing, and that obtaining analytic memoirs of those scholars who lived in the socialist period is also gaining importance, so that generations of younger scholars are provided with the context of the socialist epoch. more...

The aim of this study is to analyze good practice in teaching about the Holocaust, comparing the use of pedagogical resources in Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and England (United Kingdom). The paper compares the use of three types of pedagogical resources used in history classes: fictional films, documentaries, and photographs of Holocaust atrocities. Comparison is drawn between a developing and post-conflict society (Republika Srpska) and the well-established and reputable English educational system. By cross-referencing teachers’ and students’ answers, the paper attempts to identify good practice of notable value to be shared and exchanged. The research method firstly incorporated questionnaires, followed by interviews and then lesson observation. Data revealed that teachers in both education systems do not appear to consider all the educational benefits of film screening. The way teachers from England use pictures of Holocaust atrocities and organization of school trips seem to be applicable to the context of Republika Srpska, as well as being useful for classroom practitioners beyond these two education systems. more...

29. The Philosophical Aspects of the Dialogue between Modern Cosmology and Theology

cosmology ,history ,humanity ,phenomenology ,philosophy ,theology ,universe ,Philosophy (General) ,B1-5802 ,Sociology (General) ,HM401-1281 - Abstract
Introduction. The paper deals with the philosophical problems of the modern dialogue between cosmology and theology. It is argued that no existential contradiction is possible between them as originating in one and the same human condition. The difference between cosmology and theology amounts to the difference in their open-ended hermeneutics of the outer world. It is from within this philosophical conclusion that the hot issue of the dialogue are discussed and some insights are proposed.Methodology and sources. The philosophical analysis is based on the discussion of epistemological issues in modern cosmology and their relevance to theological view of the world. The method is similar to existential phenomenology’s approach to the constitution of the notion of the universe in cosmology and theology as an open-ended hermeneutics of the world. Results and discussion. It is shown that no existential contradiction is possible between two types of hermeneutics as originating in one and the same human condition. It is human being that becomes the major theme of the dialogue between cosmology and theology. On the basis of the conclusions made the paper discusses some “hot” issues in the contemporary cosmology-theology discussion, including: 1) The inseparability of cosmology and theology in justification of the possibility of cosmological knowledge, 2) Fine-tuning, Anthropic principle, fitness of the universe for life, 3) The unknowability of the universe and apophaticism in cosmology, 4) Multiple universes and their ontology, 5) How much of life is in the universe: the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), exoplanets and theological consequence for multiple incarnations, 6) The origin of the universe in modern scientific cosmology and its relevance to the theologically understood creatio ex nihilo, 7) Consciousness and the universe: can cosmology account for its own possibility without appealing to the theologically understood human capacity in producing an intellectual synthesis of the universe.Conclusion. On the basis of the methods applied to the hot issues in the dialogue between cosmology and theology one concludes that the dialogue between cosmology and theology is an open-ended enterprise related to the fundamentally concealed origins of humanity and universe. The difference is hermeneutics of the universe does not create any contradiction or tension but reflects a dualistic position of humanity in the universe, being an insignificant part of it and at the same time its center of disclosure and manifestation. more...

Today, the attention of the public, businessmen, politicians, scientists is increasingly attracted to Africa, including Tropical (Sub-Saharan) Africa. However, these areas have never been isolated and always occupied a special place in the global economic and cultural ties. This paper, based on the research of a wide range of written sources of ancient, classical, and medieval periods, is devoted to the historical analysis of the relations of the peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa with the outside world. The work highlights the depth and long history of economic, cultural, and trade contacts going back several thousand years. It explores the directions of trade routes that facilitated the spread of goods, cultural ideas, and technologies, as well as the types of goods that were of particular value to participants in international trade. The author describes in detail such phenomena as the slave trade and the book trade, the money, and the exchange values that were circulating on the continent. It is known that African traders entered into transactions with merchants from China, India, the Roman Empire, Byzantium, and European countries, were involved in world trade, and had a good command of the market trends. Africa became part of the world economy many centuries ago, and this fact is evidenced by written and material sources from different parts of the world. Nevertheless, this area of African studies remains understudied, creating lacunas in understanding the pre-colonial history of the region. This article is, in a way, an appeal to contemporary Africanists to pay more attention to the study of Africa’s pre-colonial history, without knowledge of which it is often difficult to explain some current conflicts and contribute to their resolution. more...

From an analysis of Russian, Israeli, Japanese, and various English-language sources, the authors conclude that this paper is one of the few studies on the topic of Japanese-Israeli relations in the field of Oriental studies. In particular, in Russian Oriental studies, this is the first article focusing on Japanese-Israeli relations. The authors aim not only to trace the dynamics of bilateral relations in socio-political and economic aspects but also to identify the reasons for their complex history. The study also explores potential future developments. This goal has shaped the article’s structure. It includes a literature review, an examination of cooperation prerequisites, an analysis of political and economic components, and a conclusion. The study’s analysis of historical factors, primarily the Japanese Empire’s attitude towards Jewry, reveals that no significant obstacles existed before diplomatic relations were established to hinder current bilateral and multilateral interaction. Moreover, Japan’s Prime Minister Abe Shinzō relied on positive past experiences to foster increased contacts between Tokyo and Jerusalem. Economic considerations and dependence on external energy resources have played a crucial role in the political and diplomatic sphere for both states. This has led Japanese authorities to maintain a balanced course in the Middle East. Over time, the significance of this task has grown as Tokyo seeks to enhance its international status, particularly within the UN and its specialized agencies. In the realm of economic cooperation, internal crises and differing economic models have hindered progress for a considerable period. However, the distinctive national economies and entrepreneurial cultures of Japan and Israel now present significant opportunities for collaboration. more...

- Abstract
This paper describes the history and work of the National Library of Russia, which has been one of the most important cultural institutions for more than two hundred years of its existence, in various socio-political circumstances from the period of the Empire to the modern age. Although the national character of the Library was defined immediately after its establishment, since the end of the 19
th century its work has been based on the preservation of not only the most important monuments of Russian history and culture, but also the heritage of the world. The Library collections are presented through a description of the most significant works from different parts of the world. As for Serbian culture, some of the oldest preserved copies of Serbian medieval manuscripts (Vukan's Gospel, Miroslav's Gospel and Radoslav's gospel) are of particular value. Literature on The National Library of Russia is extensive and enables reconstruction of its own history as well as the history of other cultural institutions on the territory of Russia. Besides, it is possible to gain insight into the work of prominent figures in the field of culture and science, who have expanded their knowledge and contributed to the development of the state while working within The National Library of Russia. The work also briefly presents the development of other types of libraries in Russia, established mainly in the 18th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...- Published

The society of the ancient Turks with a nomadic way of life always required courage, ingenuity, and heroism. The glory of man was determined by how many enemies he had killed. But still, in the ancient Turkic runic inscriptions, the mind is in the first place, and the power is in the second. Tengre gives the kagans reason, and only after that he lets them rule over the Turkic people. This paper, based on a set of sources, addresses the ideas of the Turkic-Tatar ancestors of the Tatar people about wisdom in its various manifestations. These ideas, which formed in ancient times, having preserved their essence, reached later times and played an important role in the traditional culture of the Tatars. The materials of the paper can be useful for a deeper understanding and comprehension of the life and spiritual world of the Turkic-Tatars. more...

Ergotherapy / occupational therapy is one of the most important components of medical and social rehabilitation, which uses the amount of means, forms and methods of pedagogy, psy- chology, physiotherapy, exercises, physical education and sports, massage, natural factors. The definition of ”ergothérapie” was recorded in French in 1913. The term is derived from the Greek words ”έργο” – ”work” and ”θεραπεία” – ”therapy”. It is interpret- ed as a rehabilitation treatment aimed at preserving the autonomy of people with disabilities (temporary or definitive) by adaptive activities. The National French Association of Occupational Thera- pists was created in 1961. According to the statistic data , there are 9,691 occupational therapists in France in 2015, 87 % of them are women. The article considers possible directions of research of the role of the novel by Alexandre Dumas père The Three Musketeers in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, since it is with the Three Musketeers that General Ivolgin compares himself, Epanchin, and Myshkin-father. The paper analyses Dostoevsky’s statements about the work and personality of Dumas found in his articles. Thus, in the introduction to “A Series of Articles on Russian Literature” the writer notes that the protagonist of Merimee’s drama Le Faux Demetrius came out “terribly similar to Alexandre Dumas.” The article analyses the image of False Dmitry and suggests that the similarity identified by Dostoevsky may lie in the liberty with which both authors treat historical information for personal gain (to attract readers or supporters in a political intrigue). Furthermore, in the article we refer to the review of the exhibition at the Academy of Arts in 1860–1861, which compares the artistic methods of Dumas and Aivazovsky, who preferred in their artistic work to recur to excessive effects, which often “hurt the viewer to look at”, to commonplaces. On the basis of these and other observations, an assumption is made about Dostoevsky’s convergence of the images of the writer Dumas and General Ivolgin. The last part of the article analyses the novel The Three Musketeers and the images of its main characters. The definitions of the trio of friends (“inseparable” and “cavalcade”) emphasized by the General and being direct quotations from the original text become the “point of entry” into the French text. more...

History functions and is defined depending on the historical context: in the modern era, it can be part of the national ideology; in Antiquity, it was perceived as a literary genre; in the Middle Ages, it was a religious worldview. In the post-capitalist era, theories about the “end of history” can also be explained as part of an ideologeme or a mythologeme. The paper aims to formulate the mechanisms of relations between the historical knowledge and the historical era. The functions of history in the contemporary world after the declared “end of history' were discussed. The concepts of attention economy and platform capitalism were considered as the basis for determining the specificity of contemporary society. The research focuses on the forms of re-actualization of the concept of history, which we can observe now, at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. How does the concept of history function? For what purpose is it reproduced after the “end of history” and the “death of the social” proclaimed in the late 20th century? Can such re-actualization be considered a “Renaissance” of the social? These are the main questions covered by this paper. more...

The research is based on a thorough examination of official data from the Government of the Republic of Buryatia, government departments of the Irkutsk region and Transbaikal region, as well as publications in the media and field materials gathered through an expert survey of heads of educational centers and language activists. The authors have adopted a systematic approach and applied a range of general scientific and special methods, including comparative historical and statistical methods, to conduct this study. Results and conclusions. It has been revealed that the Mongolian script has significant role in performing various socio-cultural functions. Mongolian script has gained widespread popularity in the form of calligraphy in the Baikal region. Furthermore, the language is deeply embedded with ethno cultural symbolism, making it a valuable source for the development of the Buryat language and culture as a whole. There is a growing interest in analyzing the language situation in Mongolia and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, particularly in terms of the implementation of state language policy in perspective. The paper focuses on the identification and study of the features of cognitive metaphors of the past and related concepts in the Greek linguistic picture of the world. The analysis considers the nominations: ιστορία (history), κληρονομιά (heritage), παρελθόν (past) and αρχαιότητα (antiquity). The research sets main cognitive structures in the source domain that are inherent to all analyzed concepts. Metaphorization predominantly takes place around the image-scheme of the path (“sourcepath-goal”), personification and perception of the concepts in the target domain as objects. The path has a structure-shaping role: both linear and labyrinthine path models are registered, while the movement mostly occurs in the opposite direction with the focus on the starting point of the journey (the source). Ethno-specific feature includes orientational metaphor, which suggests that the past is up. The broad scope has personification (first of all, with social and professional roles), as well as objectification, based mostly on visibility or concealment of the objects, as well as on their physical characteristics. A distinctive feature is the perception of antiquities as neighbors that exist side by side with the modern population, and antiquity, on the contrary, as a poet communicating with poems. One can also highlight the perception of the past and heritage as exhibits – something that is exposed to the public and is source of pride. Besides, natural phenomena and the construction are the common source of metaphorization for the past, history, heritage and antiquity in the Greek linguistic picture of the world. more...

Introduction. The paper discusses the most common features of political myths which, with reference to Russia, are mainly built on superficial historical and cultural views on the political past of our country and a biased ideological assessment of contemporary political processes. In their research the authors use such methods as culturological, sociophilosophical and discourse analysis of public practices. The paper outlines the major topics highlighted in Western scientific literature and the media – Russia’s underdevelopment, the authoritarian essence of the regime, its repressive nature, corruption, nationalism, violation of human rights and freedoms, aggressive foreign policy, etc. In the course of the analysis it is admitted that the Russian reality gives some grounds for such assumptions. At the same time, using some specific empirical data the authors put the critical judgments under corrective analysis and, consequently, refute many of them. Our opponents’ main claim is Russia’s inability or intentional unwillingness to become an organic part of Western civilization. Thereby, the critics refuse to recognise the right of the country to be conscious of its historical identity and to search for alternative routes of development. The research results consist in the conclusion that most Western myths manifest the denial of Russia as an autonomous power with its independent policy, and make an attempt to impose their own ideas and interests. However, a well-grounded and objective assessment of Russia is also to be heard from Western experts. The authors believe that the process of refusal from mutual accusations and stereotypes will be a long and difficult one, but it is crucial, too, if both sides are interested in establishing equitable partner relationships. To succeed in this, Russia has to overcome its internal challenges and contradictions and to secure ideological consensus and political consolidation of the society. O. V. Omelichkin has studied the peculiarities of political myths and their reflection in political consciousness of modern Russia. S. V. Biryukov has paid special attention to the analysis of Western mythologems and the prospects of forming the foreign political image of the country. more...

SLOVAK language ,COMPARATIVE studies ,STANDARD language ,CZECH language ,PHONETICS ,VOCABULARY ,HISTORY - Abstract
This paper is intended to identify the differences between the standard language codified by Ľudovít Štúr and the present-day Slovak standard language. Comparative analysis showed that these differences are significant and occur at several language levels: in phonetics, morphology, vocabulary as well as in word formation. This discrepancy could have emerged as the consequence of Hattala's reform, which eliminated some controversial points in Štúr's codification. In some cases, Štúr was clearly influenced by the Czech standard language, while in other cases, the author's individual perception of certain phenomena was manifested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...
