This paper was designed to report the results of comparative clinical and functional studies involving 89 patients who presented with moderately severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and were given the combined treatment with yellow turpentine bathtubs and bronchodilators inhalations with the use of a nebulizer. The patients comprising group 1 (n=29) were treated with yellow turpentine bathtubs and bronchodilators inhalations, those making up group 2 (n=30) received monotherapy with yellow turpentine bathtubs alone, and the patients included in group 3 (n=3) served as controls treated with the use of therapeutic physical exercises and symptomatic medications analogous to those given to the patients of the two former groups. The results of the study give evidence of the advantages of the rehabilitative complex including yellow turpentine bathtubs and atrovent inhalations over two alternative therapeutic modalities attributable to its pronounced anti-inflammatory and immune-corrective activity that resulted in the generalized improvement of bronchial patency, reduction of lung hypertension, and enhancement of physical tolerance; taken together, these effects ensured the best clinical results.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of clinical principles of physician humanist F.P. Haas expounded in his book "Ma visite aux Eaux d'Alexandre en 1809 at 1810" by F.P. Haas (M., 1811). The translation of this book into the Russian language gave an idea of the clinical views of the medical profession in this country in the beginning of the XIXth century (before the Patriotic War of 1812) including relationship between doctors and their patients and medical ethics. Haas proposed a well-substantiated therapeutic strategy with the use of mineral waters taking into consideration residual assimilative capacity of the patient's organism.

The article is concerned to the history of formation of sanitary-treatment stations on the North Caucasus, in Chechnya (Goryachevodsky and Mikhailovsky mineral springs) till 1917 year. The basis of the article are archive documents, scientific papers of contemporaries and official documents. Goryachevodsky and Mikhailovsky mineral springs were more than 70 years the one the best recreative base of the Caucasian standing army including the caucasian cossack troop. The sanitary-treatment stations were of great importance during the active military actions with Hill people within the territory of Chechnya and Dagestan, during the Crimean War (1853-1856), The Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and the First World War (1914-1918), when the amount of the wounded and ill soldiers increased.

This paper was designed to report the results of investigations into the therapeutic effectiveness of "Kluchi" sulfate magnesiumcalcium mineral water used to treat 194 patients presenting with chronic acalculous cholecystitis and different types of biliary tract dysfunction. The control group was comprised of 92 patients who took a diet. It was shown, that mineral water "Kluchi" exerted well apparent beneficial action on the motor function of the gallbladder and the sphincter apparatus. Moreover, drinking the mineral water improved colloidal stability of bile. It is concluded that the therapeutic application of "Kluchi" sulfate magnesium-calcium mineral water results in the reduction of bile lihogenicity, produces anti-inflammatory and choleretic effects, and promotes normalization of the motor and tonic condition of the biliary tract.

Irritated bowel syndrome (IBS) is a leading pathology among the so-called functional diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The development of methods for their treatment including physiotherapeutic modalities is based on the knowledge of peculiarities of the clinical features of various forms of IBS characterized by a combination of various etiological factor, such as social conditions, pathogenetic mechanisms, and individual characteristics of the patients. Insufficient effectiveness of the medicamental treatment of irritated bowel syndrome due to poor knowledge of its nature and pathogenetic mechanisms require the application of a variety of physiotherapeutic methods and physical factors including interference currents, cryotherapy, sinusoidal modulated currents, running pulsed magnetic field, balneo- and peloidotherapy, etc.). These methods are analysed in the paper in conjunction with their analgesic and sedative effects normalizing the motor intestinal function. The authors emphasize the necessity of taking into consideration both localization and intensity of therapeutic effects for the manifestation of biological action of the applied physical factors prescribed for the treatment of irritated bowel syndrome.

This paper reports the results of analysis of the psycho-emotional status and pain syndrome in the women presenting with endometriosis of external genitalia treated with a combination of hormonal preparations and balneotherapy. A total of 216 infertile patients were involved in the study. The duration of the infertility period varied from 1.5 to 19 years. All the patients underwent surgical intervention. The influence of rehabilitative therapy on the quantitative vital indices (psycho-emotional adaptation to the social environment and pain intensity) was estimated before and after the treatment. The patients were divided into 3 groups. Those of group 1 received an oral contraceptive (30 mcg of ethinylestradiol plus 2 mg dienogest) as a continuous three-cycle course (63 tablets) followed by its discontinuation for the 7 day menstrual period and the final three-cycle course (total duration of therapy 6 months). The patients of group 2 were treated with injections of agonists of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) at a dose of 3.75 mg once every 4 weeks (total duration 6 months). In group 3, the injections of GnRH agonists (3.75 mg once every 4 weeks, total duration 6 months) were combined with a course of balneotherapy using radon. All the three rehabilitative modalities produced a well-apparent positive effect. Chronic pelvic pain before treatment was reported by 90,3% of the patients. After the treatment, the number of such women in groups 1, 2, and 3 decreased to 20,8%, 12,5%, and 30,6% respectively Dyspareunia in the pre-treatment period was diagnosed in 66,7% of the patients. After treatment, this pathology persisted only in 23,6%, 18,1%, and 31,9% of the patients in groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Psycho-emotional disorders before treatment were documented in 90,3% of the patients compared with 27,8%, 25%, and 30,6% after therapy. It is concluded that all the three therapeutic modalities markedly improved health conditions of the patients presenting with endometriosis of external genitalia, but the combination of GnRH agonists with radon therapy produced the most pronounced clinical effect.

This paper is devoted to the book "Ma visite aux Eaux d'Alexandre en 1809 et 1810" (M.: 1811) that celebrates the 200th anniversary of its publication. This work is an eloquent testimony that F.P. Gaaz should be by right considered as one of the pioneers of climatology, climatherapy, medical meteorology, and balneotherapy in this country. The available materials concerning the multifaceted activities of F.P Gaaz aimed at exploring and developing the region of Kavkazskie Mineral'nye Vody (Caucasian Mineral Waters) give reason to speak about him as an outstanding organizer of health resort business.

The necessity of considering the problem with which this paper is concerned arises from the current scientific discussion of the actions of physicians working in municipal healthcare facilities and sanatoria directed toward rehabilitation of patients after surgical treatment of periapical tissues and oral cavity phlegmonas. The study elucidated the mechanism of action of mineral waters (alkaline, sodium hydrocarbonate or boron-containing water with elevated fluorine and chlorine content) extracted from natural deposits of the Belgorod Region and Krasnodar Krai (Territory). It was shown that drinking these waters contributed to the correction of the disturbed balance in the ratio of sodium and potassium ions excreted with urine and to the positive dynamics of serum phosphorus level in the patients included in this study.

The paper presents the results of using sylvinite speleotherapy, general salt baths and their combination in 120 patients with Stages I-II chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at a damped exacerbation and remission. It is shown that in the patients with this disease treated by the above procedures, the inflammatory process regresses, bronchial patency, central hemodynamics, exercise performance, and psychoemotional background improves and, during a long-term followup, the progression of the disease becomes slower, remissions prolong, exercise performance increases, and social adaptation improves.

The paper contains analysis of results of restorative treatment in a sanatorium and subsequent ambulatory care for 1 year of 167 patients after coronary artery bypass surgery. All patients received similar curative and preventive aid, 127 patients in addition participated in a special program of medical and psychological support while 40 patients comprised control group. The program was carried out in a sanatorium and consisted of several sessions of various types of group psychotherapy. Participation in this program allowed to achieve sufficiently high level of motivation to comply with recommendations of a physician and to implement self-psychoregulation and self-control of the functions of own body. Program participants had better quality of life and more frequently returned to work.

The paper presents manifestations of aftereffects of cranio-cerebral trauma in children. A lot of clinical observations grounded the expediency of a combined sanatorium treatment of such patients using mineral baths of different chemical composition. Radon baths are preferable, especially in patients with hypertensive hydrocephalus syndrome.

The paper provides with the research results of physicochemical and balneological properties of thermal waters and hydrothermal mud of the Ebeko volcano (Paramushir Island, Kuril Islands). To assess recreational and tourist potential, we sample the most intensive thermal waters outputs. Ultra-acidic spring no. 1 of the Verkhne-Yuryeva group has a temperature of 88 °C, its mineralized (M – 13 g/l) chloride-sulfate waters contain biologically active elements in elevated concentrations (Si, B, Br, Fe2 +). Thermal waters of the Verkhne-Yuryeva springs can be roughly attributed to the Gaisky type of the acid water group and recommended for external use in the treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases. Given the complexity of the route to the springs, the real development of this territory is considered not as a balneotherapy complex, but as an object of recreational and tourist activities. A similar situation is with an ultra-acidic sulfate thermal spring in the North-Eastern solfataric field. In addition to hydrotherms, it contains thin deposits of hydrothermal mud, which is almost impossible to use as a therapeutic due to its insufficiently good physical indicators and relatively small volume. The most promising deep hydrotherms for recreation and balneotherapy are opened by a well P-2 in the area of Severo-Kurilsk. In 2014, the hydrotherms temperature was 82 °C, mineralized water (M – 8.6 g/l) chloride-hydrocarbonate sodium, slightly alkaline (pH 7.6), with an elevated content of biologically active components (Si, B, Br). According to the physical and chemical properties, the thermal waters of well P-2 can be tentatively attributed to the Lazarevsky hydrochemical type of therapeutic drinking water of chloride-hydrocarbonate sodium group, and as an external (balneological) use, they are tentatively close to the Kuldur type of siliceous thermal waters of various ion composition.
