The basic function of all types of libraries has been, over time, that of depository of culture for various human communities, thus supporting the evolution of humanity. The paper aims to analyze the library from three perspectives: as an institution, as an organization and as a field of knowledge. The field of librarianship and information science has existed for nearly 150 years. The specialists' acquaintance with knowledge and research worldwide is a prerequisite directly related to the quality of collections and services provided by the library organizations. The awareness of the information and documentation field as being a polyvalent, multidisciplinary one is the only approach valid in a world in which the essential changes that have occurred during the last fifty years can no longer be ignored.
