The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between past and current intestinal helminth infections, and asthma, allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, and atopic dermatitis.The study was performed on 84 patients aged 2-18 years with a mean of 9.31 +/- 3.75 years. Helminth infection was determined by stool examinations and questionnaire. Asthma was diagnosed by spirometry, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhino-conjunctivitis by skin prick testing.Stool examinations revealed infection with A. lumbricoides in 5.95% of cases and E. vermicularis in 4.76% of cases. 8 patients had positive tests for at least a helminth. The most frequent respiratory symptoms were caught, wheezing and dispneea. Spirometry showed anormal results in 4.76% of patients and skin tests were positive in 20.24% of cases. 11 patients were diagnosed with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and 5 with atopic dermatitis. A history of infection with E. vermicularis was associated with increased risk of atopic dermatitis (OR 1.86), asthma (OR 2.11), and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (OR 1.34), and a positive stool examination for A. lumbricoides was negatively associated with asthma (OR 2.60).Current A. lumbricoides infection protects against asthma while past infection with E. vermicularis are risk factors for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis. Interactions depend on the type of helminth and time of infestation.

Bronchial asthma is the most frequent chronic disease of childhood. The association of this disease with allergic rhinitis increases the prevalence and severity of bronchial asthma to 60% compared with 2% in subjects without allergic rhinitis. Food allergy can be expressed in a variety of respiratory symptoms, especially when IgE mediated immune responses are involved. In children, the prevalence of bronchial asthma associated with food induced atopic eczema is 2-8% and respiratory clinical picture can be a component of the multisystem anaphylactic reaction or of chronic respiratory disease like bronchial asthma, serous otitis. The association of other allergic comorbidities, like sinusitis, ocular allergies, lymphoid hypertrophy, sleep obstructive apnoea, leads to the conclusion that allergic bronchial asthma (extrinsic) is a systemic disease, with onset at any age, and the dominant clinical feature depends on the child's genetic pattern.

the Widal syndrome (WS) is known as the association of bronchial asthma to aspirin intolerance, nasal polyposis and/or allergic rhinitis, typical considered to have a difficult course.finding the prevalence and severity of WS in general medical practice. VENUE: data bases from a private pneumology practice and the ambulatory of a pneumology clinic in Timisoara.473 asthma patients, among which 41 (8.66%) matched the criteria for WS. There were 31 women (75.6%) and 10 men (24.39%). MAIN PARAMETERS EVALUATED: spirometry, ENT examination, skin allergy tests, serum IgE.most cases (22 pts., 53.65%) had mild to moderate asthma. Monitoring the cases for 4 years didn't show any worsening. The 19 severe cases (46.35%) had a progressive course, despite a complex treatment (anti-leukotrienes + systemic corticosteroids in high doses + long acting beta 2 agonists + long acting theophylline). The results don't match the classical description of WS, with a dominance of severe forms.in general medical practice WS has a frequency of 8.66% among asthmatic population, and the mild and moderate forms represent 53.65% and it seems they keep like that a long time.

The quality of life is a subjective parameter that evaluates the impact of asthma on daily life of the child. The authors evaluated the evolution of the quality of life score in children with persistent asthma and analyzed the impact of association of allergic rhinitis on this parameter. The evaluation of the quality of life was based on a questionnaire with 23 items (PAQLQ), which was applied on 54 children with asthma (35 of them having rhinitis allergic associated to asthma). The quality of life score was evaluated initial and every 3 months, during one year. At the end of the study the authors revealed the improvement of the quality of life score in 87% of children, with significant improvement of the scores for symptoms, activities and emotions (p=0.002). There were no significant differences between the 19 patients with only asthma as compared with the 35 patients that had both asthma and allergic rhinitis either at the beginning of the study (p = 0,19) or after 12 months of follow-up (p = 0,34). In conclusion, allergic rhinitis is frequently associated with asthma in children, but its impact on the quality of life is not significant.

More and more it is spoken about this morbid association between asthma and allergic rhinitis; this two diseases are interconnected but were often distinctly approached over time. Anyway, they share interesting pathogenic and therapeutic features. The current article reviews epidemiologic data, pathogenic mechanisms, common actions as well as common elements coming from experimental medicine, everything pleading for a new concept, "one airway" or "Combined Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Syndrome". From here we can also draw conclusions marking new therapeutic directions where anti- leukotrienes often prove to be useful.

The aim of the present study was the retrospective analysis (in the last 5 years) of 89 children, aged between 3 and 24 months of life, diagnosed with atopic dermatitis (D.A.) and wheezing, in comparison with a second group of 31 children admitted in the Paediatric Clinic for recurrent wheezing (R.W.) without atopic cutaneous signs. Evaluating the therapeutical response on the basis of the clinical and biological features for each child, we have noticed for the first group (with D.A.), the followings: 30% of patients didn't experience a favourable outcome and were complicated with "severe" asthma; 54% of subjects have manifested airway hyperreactivity (nocturnal and early morning cough); 81% of children have associated allergic rhinitis. The observations in the second group have suggested that, only in 12% of patients with R.W. has been manifested asthma as a major complication. The main risk factors for asthma in the first group were as follows: precocious atopic eczema, personal or family history of atopy, nourishment with non-maternal milk and passive smoke. We consider that asthma at infants and children is underestimated because of the difficulties of diagnosis at this age.

Starting from the idea that in nasal allergy the nasal conchae--especially the inferior conchae--represent the organs of shock, and that histologic studies have shown the existence in the mucosa and erectile tissue of antibody-forming lymphocytes and plasma cells, the authors assumed that by removing this tissue they might prevent the formation of the antibodies concerned, and hence avoid conflict with the antigen. This would represent an immunosuppressive action, the only method according to allergologists to obtain recovery in allergies. Starting in 1976, the authors performed mucotomy of the tips and lower edges of the inferior conchae and sometimes of the middle conchae, obtaining recovery of all the 40 operated patients with nasal allergy, recovery checked in the course of four years.
