Bridges are fundamental components of any transportation system and to ensure their operation it is necessary that they are maintained in a timely manner. Therefore, it is essential to know the condition of the bridges in service through periodic inspections, which consist of a visual inspection of the bridge by a trained inspector. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, can be a very useful tool in routine inspections of bridges, since they prevent traffic interruption, greatly reduce risks for inspectors, reduce operating costs, and allow to obtain more detailed information than with traditional visual inspections. This research describes a methodology developed to incorporate the use of UAS in routine inspections of bridges in Costa Rica. The main differences with other types of inspections are described and the main advantages and limitations are explained according to international experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
