SELF-esteem , *SOCIAL networks , *PRIMARY audience , *SINGLE parents , *MOTHERS - Abstract
This is a quantitative study, with a descriptive and correlational design, whose objective was to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and parenting styles, taking Brazilian solo mothers as the target audience. The sample consisted of 41 women-mothers in a single-parent context, the majority from Ceará. The research was published on social networks and participants responded online to the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire and the Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The results highlighted maternal overload, insufficient support network and the absence of the male father from the parental dynamics. Regarding parenting styles, the sample made greater use of the democratic style, however, the physical coercion dimension of the authoritarian style obtained a score higher than expected. Finally, the correlation test between the level of self-esteem and parental styles and dimensions indicated a positive and significant correlation only with the regulation dimension of the democratic style. - Abstract
The search for the perfect smile has been a growing aspiration, aiming to increase self-esteem and self-confidence. Gingivoplasty plays a crucial role in this context, allowing the re-anatomization of the gums by increasing the clinical crown. At the same time, to correct diastemas, composite resin appears as an excellent alternative, due to its aesthetic and functional properties, prioritizing the preservation of the dental element when compared to other techniques and materials. Thus, after choosing excellent materials and techniques, a treatment plan must be outlined to harmonize the smile and restore the self-esteem of affected patients. Smile harmonization depends on several factors, such as alignment, shape and color of the teeth, in addition to gum control, which can also affect the aesthetics of the smile. For effectiveness, gingivoplasty, diastema closure and application of resin veneers were planned for a 24-year-old woman who sought care, showing that she was very dissatisfied with her smile, reporting interdental spaces, small and stained teeth, which directly affected her social life. To examine the influence of Sex, age, area of residence, academic year, health behaviors, and social media use on self-esteem and psychological well-being in a sample of Portuguese university students. A descriptive, correlational, and quantitative study was conducted using a cross-sectional, quasi-experimental design. The sample comprised 194 individuals (171 female, 23 male) aged 18-57 years. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Psychological General Well-being Index short version. The results showed a positive correlation between self-esteem and psychological well-being. Gender showed effects on both self-esteem and psychological well-being when associated with hours of sleep per day and social media use. Academic year and physical exercise practice only affected self-esteem. Age demonstrated statistically significant multivariate effects on both self-esteem and psychological well-being. No significant effects were found on self-esteem and psychological well-being for the remaining variables (area of residence, smoking habits, hours of sleep per day, social media use, and daily time spent on social networks). It is possible to conclude that self-esteem positively influences psychological well-being, and psychological well-being affects self-esteem, highlighting the importance of a healthy relationship between these constructs. In the absence of such a relationship, access to mental health and support services is necessary.

INTERNET addiction , *INTERNET access , *COLLEGE environment , *MENTAL health , *COLLEGE students , *SELF-esteem - Abstract
The university environment brings several challenges to young students and directly influences the vulnerabilities that affect their mental health. During this period, students also access the internet a lot for studies and work, as well as for leisure, increasing the risk of internet addiction. Under a theoretical framework, it is possible to identify self-esteem as a factor linked to abusive internet use. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between self-esteem and internet addiction among university students. This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study on a sample of 378 higher education university students in the University Center of São Paulo. The instruments used: socio-demographic questionnaire, IATT - Internet Addiction Test and Rosemberg Self-Esteem Scale. The analyses were carried out using the IBM SPSS Statistics Version 21 statistical program. The results indicated a relationship between self-esteem and internet addiction, indicating a higher prevalence of internet addiction in students who have unsatisfactory self-esteem. EXPLORATORY factor analysis , *CONFIRMATORY factor analysis , *SELF-esteem , *COLLEGE students , *SELF-perception - Abstract
This study aimed to adapt and analyze the validity evidence of the Self-Perception Profile for College Students (SPPCS) for use with Brazilian college students. A total of 1032 students participated in the study (Mage=24.29; SD=7.24), 62.2% of whom were female. The SPPCS is a multidimensional instrument that assesses self-perception across specific domains and self-esteem. The scale presented adequate content validity. For internal structure validity, confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were conducted. The results indicated the one-dimensionality of the self-esteem scale and the representation of the self-perception scale by eight domains: academic competence, intellectual capacity, social interaction, humor, creativity, athletic competence, appearance, and relationship with parents. The adapted scale closely resembles the original, presenting structural and response pattern evidence, making it suitable for use in research and interventions to assess the self-perception of Brazilian college students. This article examines the relationship between attributional styles, academic self-concept and self-esteem in university students of English Pedagogy. Their profiles in these variables were identified by using a quantitative descriptive-correlational approach and a sample of 125 students. In order to fulfill the objective of the study, descriptive and comparative analyses were performed through T Student and ANOVA. Also, Pearson correlations were performed to identify the link between the dimensions of the instruments with respect to the sociodemographic variables. The results showed that students tend to attribute their failures to lack of effort, lack of ability and moderate academic self-efficacy. Females evidenced greater attribution of failure due to lack of ability and family conflicts. Correlations were found between several dimensions, highlighting the negative relationship between internal causes and lack of effort. These findings provide relevant information for future educational interventions in this population.

The consumption of psychoactive substances among college students is a topic that has increasingly garnered more media coverage in the literature. However, there remains considerable controversy surrounding this issue. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between substance use habits (including alcohol, tobacco, and other psychoactive substances) and self-esteem and psychological well-being among college students, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of this matter. This study employs a descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative, correlational, and quasi-experimental design. The sample consists of 460 college students aged between 18 and 66 who have internet access. Among these participants, 299 are biologically female and 158 are biologically male. The research utilized several instruments, including a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Psychological Well-Being Manifestation Measurement Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results indicated no statistically significant differences in terms of self-esteem and psychological well-being based on substance use. However, it was observed that the consumption of other psychoactive substances was significantly higher among male participants compared to female participants.

SELF-esteem , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *MENTAL health , *INDIVIDUALITY , *SUBJECTIVITY - Abstract
The objective of this work is to study self-esteem as a protective factor for mental health. It is notable that self-esteem is of great relevance since it can influence and affect people's behavior towards society and their relationships, as this will contribute significantly to the way the individual will react to life's circumstances. From a bibliographical review on the topic, which analyzed studies with subjects of both sexes aged 7 to 70, it was noticed that the higher the individual's self-esteem, the better their adaptive process and the better their factor. protection for mental health. In this context, the construction of self-esteem, which begins in childhood and will continue to be built throughout its development, will involve social, cultural, and emotional factors, always going through the process of the individual's subjectivity. When these formations are benign, they provide the basis for facing a variety of social and emotional difficulties in a more positive way. His interpersonal relationships are favored, as he is able to know himself better, like himself more, and consequently understand and like others more, becoming a more affectionate, resilient person and respectful of individualities and differences. Abstract: Introduction: In Brazil, the lack of studies evaluating self-esteem in medical students is evident. In the academic field, it is known that individuals with high self-esteem and resilience are more likely to be successful. In previous studies, resilience was negatively associated with anxiety and Burnout Syndrome (BS). The BS has become a public health problem due to its increased incidence, especially among medical professionals during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, making it essential to expand and develop this issue. Objectives: To evaluate the level of self-esteem in medical students and its association with the degree of resilience and burnout during the pandemic. Method: A cross-sectional cohort study was conducted with medical students from the first to the eighth semesters at Centro Universitário Christus in Fortaleza - CE, Brazil. The students answered three surveys: in the beginning of the semester, at the midterms and during finals. We applied the Maslach Burnout Inventory, Wagnild and Young’s resilience scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: Students with higher levels of emotional exhaustion showed less professional efficiency (P < 0.001). Disbelief and professional efficiency are inversely related (P < 0.001). There was no significant variation in the prevalence of burnout throughout the semester (P = 0.593). However, this prevalence has been high since the first period of the study. Additionally, the higher the resilience, the higher the self-esteem (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Medical students show elevated levels of BS. There was no statistically significant variation in burnout, resilience, and self-esteem throughout the semester. Therefore, further studies are necessary to analyze these variables.

The aim of this study was to seek evidence of validity for the Humor Style Questionnaire (HSQ) in a Brazilian sample. Participants were 322 university students with a mean age of 28.6 years (SD=11.5), 68.6% women and 31.4% men. After the translation procedures, the Brazilian version of the HSQ was applied simultaneously with instruments to assess self-esteem, shyness, individualism, and collectivism. The results showed a four-factor structure for the HSQ, in line with the original instrument, with adequate internal consistency rates. Positive correlations were found between self-enhancing humor and self-esteem, and between affiliation and humor collectivism. Negative correlations were also found between self-defeating humor and self-esteem, and aggressive humor and collectivism. The aggressive humor dimension could also differentiate between men and women, according to previous studies. The evidence found supports the use of the instrument in the Brazilian context.

This study aims to analyze the socioemotional skills of students attending 7th grade at schools in Priority Education Intervention Territories and study their relationship with the students' personal characteristics (gender, nationality and parents' education). A stratified sample of 675 students participated. The number of participants of both genders was equivalent, the majority was of Portuguese nationality (89%) and the average schooling of the mother and father was 9 years. The results indicated a tendency for the majority of the youngsters to perceive themselves positively, mainly in Self-Esteem, while they considered themselves less competent in Class Participation and Responsibility. Differences were observed according to the personal characteristics of the students: girls considered themselves more competent than boys, as well as Portuguese students when compared to foreign students. The mother's and father's education proved to be directly proportional to the students' socioemotional competences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The study aimed to gather evidence of reliability and validity of the Comparison Orientation Scale (INCOM) in a Brazilian context. Specifically, the pattern of relationships with self-esteem, sex and age was examined. Two studies were conducted with participants from the general population. In the first (n=356), the INCOM was adapted, and an exploratory factor analysis was carried out, which suggested a bifactorial structure. In the second (n=300), confirmatory factor analyses were performed, testing alternative models (unifactorial and bifactorial), which corroborated the adequacy of the bifactorial model. Pearson's correlation (r) was also performed and showed a negative relationship between the factors of social comparison (aptitude and opinion) and self-esteem, indicating convergent validity. No significant sex differences were found. As for age, a negative relationship with the aptitude factor was found. Satisfactory reliability was found in both studies. It is concluded that the INCOM gathered psychometric evidence and can assist in the assessment of individuals with a tendency for social comparison and its correlates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PERSONALITY , *OPENNESS to experience , *SELF-perception , *SELF-esteem , *BODY image - Abstract
Carl Rogers developed a personality theory that can serve as a lens for understanding various clinical phenomena. Considering studies that correlate body self-image and self-esteem problems, this article aims to carry out a reinterpretation of the Rogerian personality theory about these phenomena. In this sense, the aspects are presented that: (1) organize the personality by the relationships between experience, consciousness, phenomenological field, behavior, self (real and ideal), self-actualization tendency, self-image and self-esteem; (2) disorganize the personality and generate self-image and self-esteem problems, from reactions to threat, conditional evaluations, regulations based on the ideal-self, incongruences and psychological maladjustment; (3) reorganize the personality into a self-image and self-esteem based on direct organismic experiences, regulations based on a real self-linked to the self-actualization tendency, and expressed by a fully functioning, openness to experience and the process of being what one is. It concludes pointing to empirical studies on the subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study assessed the perception of the 60+ population about the impact of the pandemic. Through a focus group held in virtual spaces, the speech of the 16 participants was categorized into the axes "weaknesses", "values", "beliefs" and "potentialities", indicating the uncertainties, consequences of the interruption of important activities in this stage of life, promotion of mental health and, mainly, concern for family members and collective grief. The weaknesses pointed out can be overcome by technology, adding protagonism, self-esteem, and autonomy over the new period. The proposed methodology allowed the reception, collective construction, and support in the confluence between social sciences and bioethics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SKIN aging , *ORGANIC cosmetics , *HUMAN body , *AGING prevention , *TRACE elements - Abstract
Aging is a natural process, characterized by morphological, biochemical and physiological changes that occur progressively over time. There are countless ways to treat and prevent skin aging, among which we highlight the use of cosmetics with organic silicon. Organic silicon is the most abundant ubiquitous trace element on earth, the human body has organic silicon in its composition since the fetal phase, and over time its concentrations decrease. This active has several functions, among which we can highlight the antioxidant, humectant, stimulating collagen and elastin synthesis, besides helping in dermal structuring. In this perspective, through a descriptive bibliographic review with a qualitative approach, this article aims to analyze the benefits of organic silicon as a cosmetic asset, in preventing skin aging. The results showed that silicon has several functions, among which the synthesis of collagen and elastin can be highlighted, and together, the results found showed that silicon is a safe and promising cosmetic asset in the prevention of skin aging. Psychotherapy is one of the services offered by clinical psychology, allowing the patient / client to receive psychological care for various psychological needs faced. Such assistance is mostly offered by the oral modality, preventing deaf people from having access to this type of treatment effectively. This work aims to carry out a systematic review of the literature on psychotherapeutic care for people with deafness based on the national literature, identifying the aspects that make up the interaction between deaf patients and psychotherapists, observing the difficulties and realities encountered in the clinical context by the patient and therapist. The methodology used is based on qualitative bibliographic research, using databases to select national articles on the subject. The following steps were taken for data collection: definition of descriptors; selection by titles and keywords, meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria; categorization of studies into participants, interventions, objectives, and results. The results showed strong difficulties experienced by the deaf at all stages of development, with the challenges generated by anxiety being very common; communication conflicts; low self-esteem; internal conflicts; conflicts with family members; identity crises; rejection of deaf identity; lack of stimulation in sign language; learning difficulties, in addition to identifying that there are few scientific studies regarding clinical psychology and deafness in Brazil, requiring in-depth investigations and interventions. This article analyses workaholism in Portuguese corporate law firms, seeking to measure this phenomenon through the Work Addiction Risk Test (wart) - a self-assessment tool on dimensions related to compulsive tendencies, lack of control, impaired communication and self-absorption, inability to delegate and self-esteem. It is based on a survey applied to a convenience sample of corporate lawyers. The study shows the lack of control and compulsive tendencies contribute to explaining the phenomenon under discussion. It can be concluded through regression analysis that the position held, time at the office and working hours contribute as predictors for workaholism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Instagram ,body image ,body satisfaction ,self-esteem ,woman ,Psychology ,BF1-990 - Abstract
The aim was to assess the impact of Instagram's usage on young women's satisfaction with their body image and self-esteem. This is a quantitative cross-sectional study. A total of 329 women using Instagram, aged 18-24, answered this online survey. The data collection was through the RedCap platform. The research was published on social networks and was requested that other people would share on theirs. The method used was a non-probabilistic sample in order to reach as many participants as possible. The results showed that those who reported access to inspirational fitness content most frequently and compared themselves to other users showed decreased body satisfaction and self-esteem. Those who spend more than 2 hours per day on Instagram increased subjective feelings of salience and body fat perception. Time spent on Instagram increased the number of followers related to more self-esteem, strength, and physical fitness. Time spent, the frequency of Instagram use, and the type of content that women interact with, may relate to worse subjective feelings of self-esteem, salience, perception of body fat, disparagement and attractiveness.

Abstract In the face of a population that is increasingly connected electronically, the objective of this research was to test the predictive power of Instagram’s use intensity, social comparison and the five major personality factors of self-esteem. The survey, made available on the internet with sociodemographic questions and four scales, was answered by 625 Brazilians, of which 63.7% were women. The results indicated neuroticism and social comparison (abilities factor) as negative predictors of self-esteem. Extraversion, agreeableness, consciousness, social comparison (opinions factor), and age were shown to be positive predictors of self-esteem. For women, the higher the intensity of Instagram’s use, the lower the levels of self-esteem. The negative relationship between self-esteem and the intensity of Instagram use was mediated by social comparison (suppression effect). It is suggested that the harm of using the social network relates to the activity of comparing himself to other people.

SEXUALLY transmitted diseases , *TEENAGE pregnancy , *NURSING students , *SOCIAL role , *SELF-esteem , *SCHOOL children - Abstract
University extension allows the interrelation between the university and society. It leads the university's social role with the development of activities in the community and the knowledge exchange. This allows the academic's skills and the development of competencies. This paper aims to present the experience of an educational intervention carried out by nurses and undergraduate nursing students with students from elementary school aimed at promoting sexual and reproductive health. The educational intervention was conceived based on a request from the board of a public school in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo state, Brazil, due to pregnancy, situations of violence, and low self-esteem among students. The workshops were organized in six meetings, in groups of 21 students from the morning and afternoon shifts, from November 2019 to February 2020. The workshops were held at the school, lasting two hours. We use games, dialogued lectures, demonstration of contraceptive methods, reflection and discussion on the themes: pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, intimate hygiene, contraceptive methods, and finally, the evaluation. A total of 131 students (boys and girls) with an average age of 14 participated. The students were receptive, interested, and had previous knowledge about the themes, although superficial. We observed the student's concern mainly about the risks of pregnancy at this stage of life and the vulnerable situations that affect them, which aligns with the initial situation that triggered the intervention. The students evaluated the workshop positively, suggesting new themes to be addressed in new opportunities. The experience reported here demonstrates the importance of attention to situations that require quick interventions, as is the case of teenage pregnancy and violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BANK employees , *MENTAL depression , *INSTITUTIONAL environment , *SELF-esteem , *EAR - Abstract
In view of changes in the organization of work, with increased pressure for production, restructuring of staff and instabilities in the organizational climate, bank employees may present vulnerabilities to depressive symptoms and self-esteem. The present study evaluated the presence of depressive symptoms and the self-esteem of a sample of bank employees, compared to the general population. The sample of this study was 135 people, men and women, 77 bank employees, aged over 18 years old and 58 individuals from the general population, over 18 years old, through the Depression Symptom Intensity Survey (LIS-D) and Scale Rosenberg's Self-Esteem (EAR). The results show that the prevalence of depressive symptoms among bank employees has scores close to the general population and that the symptoms of thought showed greater damage in bank employees. Self-esteem scores were slightly higher in bank employees, but with no statistically significant difference. The relationship between LIS-D and EAR suggests that depressive symptoms have a negative correlation with self-esteem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BODY image , *BODY mass index , *BODY weight , *PERSONAL beauty , *SATISFACTION - Abstract
The present study aimed to verify the relationship between the Instagram use and the levels of self-esteem and physical self-concept of adult users. 205 people participated, with an average age of 26.9 years old, recruited online. They answered the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Factorial Self-Concept Scale, the Body Image Satisfaction Assessment Scale, the Instagram Intensity Scale and a Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The results showed that the intensity of Instagram use was correlated significantly and positively with the concern about weight and negatively with the body mass index. In addition, the intensity of Instagram use also significantly predicted concerns about weight. Finally, women had higher levels of Intensity of Instagram Use and concerns about weight than men. It can be inferred that the more the exposure to the standard of beauty on the Instagram, the more users, especially women, who are outside of that standard can question their own appearance and avoid such exposure. We conclude that it is necessary to reflect about the implications of the excessive use of Instagram on the mental health of its users and to think about prevention strategies, as well as promoting the inclusion of diverse and real bodies and beauties exposed in this social network. COMMUNITIES , *ADULT education , *STUDENTS , *RIGHT to education , *CONSTRUCTION projects , *SELF-esteem - Abstract
Youth and Adult Education (EJA) is formed, in its majority, by students excluded from the educational system. They seek an education that guarantees their right to learn how to learn. The Popular Community University (UPC) emerged to be this other educational offer. Through the symbolic experiences of the students and the community, the UPC sought to build an innovative project for the education of young people and adults from the outskirts of Cuiabá, in Mato Grosso. On this scenario, this article aims to address some of these experiences, through bibliographic research, official documents, conversation wheels and studies presented in the master's thesis of this author, developed in 2019 and 2020. The results indicated that the work with the students' life stories contributed to improve their learning, besides the elevation of self-esteem and criticality of this public. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to analyze the effects of 16 weeks of mat Pilates method intervention in self-esteem and depressive symptoms in breast cancer women undergoing hormone therapy. Thirty-four women were randomized in Pilates group (PG) (n=18) and control group (CG) (n=16). The intervention occurs for 16 weeks, with 3x per week for 60 minutes each session (light to very hard intensity according to BORG scale). The GC received three educational sessions and was invited to maintain their routine activities. The data collection took place in baseline and post-intervention. A questionnaire was applied including the Self-Esteem Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. Anova Two way with repeated measures and Sydak comparison test was used to analyze the effects in the variables after the 16 weeks of intervention. Two types of analysis were performed after the intervention, in the analysis by intention to treat PG (n=18) the self-esteem variable showed a significant result (p=0.011) and in the analysis by PG protocol (n=11) (p=0.013). The depressive symptoms did not demonstrate significant improvements after the intervention. Control group did not present any significant changes during the time of the study. The 16 weeks of PG was an effective intervention to improve self-esteem of breast cancer women undergoing hormone therapy.

The objective of this work is to report the extension experience in a public school with quilombola adolescents with health education as a strategy for peace-building. The methodology considered the use of the participatory method and the development of ludic activity among adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years, belonging to a municipal school in the quilombola rural black community located in the rural area of Feira de Santana-Ba. It resulted in the development of activities that favored the promotion of self-esteem, racial selfaffirmation, the recovery of the identity of black adolescents, contributing to the empowerment to face racism/violence and the reinforcement of peace-building strategies. The methodology used made it possible for students to approach the new form of activity. We understand the probable factors that motivate violence among adolescents and we see the need for continuing educational activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
