While anthropogenic impacts on urban and peri-urban biodiversity have been studied for at least fifty years, the effects of artificial lighting pollution on nocturnal biodiversity through public policies has been less explored. This article presents a map of lit surfaces in the Brest metropolitan area, based on public lighting management data, and its cross-referencing with land-use data to build a dark frame model. Mapping is first generated by combining a typology of photometric distributions with luminous flux values. Then, the model is built by calculating gridded biodiversity indices (deductive method) and landscape graphs (integrative method), tested on a bat species. A correction factor is incorporated to enable the model to be refined by field measurements. The results obtained show that the mapping is consistent with field observations and that the representation of illumination values is coherent. The dark frame model obtained reinforces pre-existing knowledge. The model is sufficiently accurate to identify potential wildlife hotspots and provide decision-making tools for land-use planning.

CULTURAL geography - Abstract
The night is a complex subject of study due to the many aspects with which it presents itself and the multiple identity that places it both outside and inside the individual. Objective event and inner evidence offers sensory knowledge and emotional and spiritual resonances at the same time. The dark space has always inspired literature and the arts, but has long been neglected by geography. This indifference seems motivated by having thought of the night as an external, objective phenomenon, neglecting its interiority and the spiritual resonances it arouses. The emphasis that the discipline places on the gaze did not help the subject, since its fundamental method is direct observation, based on the view that the night shields. The indifference to the theme is also justified by the rationalist disciplinary orientations of the past. The argument has been highlighted from the last years of twentieth century with the affirmation of cultural and emotional geography. It is a vision that enhances the poetics and interior values transmitted by the night. It is the latter that make the night a topic of particular interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents aspects related to tourism and night visitation in Brazilian national parks, and prospects for its development. Although aspects of night management are most frequent in urban offers, it is important to identify the proposals for night visitation in national parks, as well as to verify the possibilities in the public use of these spaces in this sort of tourism activity. Amid 72 national parks investigated, only ten perform some kind of nocturnal activity, developed as an innovative proposal for visitors. Most activities are trails, walks, and wildlife observation. However, for the consolidation of this alternative in ecotourism, the management team of these parks recognizes the need for studies to create guidelines for night visitation in protected areas, in order to offer visitors security, conservation in the area, and quality management by of the organizers.

This text is produced from the connection of the themes: the night, the darkness, countless and provocative specters, in addition to those historically excluded and relegated to the dimension of darkness - women, animals, their hybrids - and the dimensions of art and literature, spaces permissive to their echoes. We searched for images in the writing of Clarice Lispector and in the surrealist paintings by André Bresson and Salvador Dalí, constituting a set of spectra that motivated thoughts about Derrida's spectrology and about exclusion principles that lose strength with the suspension of the metaphysics of presence, allowing to see in the expressions of the nocturnal in the Gothic a positivation of the organic powers of the feminine and the animal. Two great names of the modernist movement in their respective countries, Manuel Bandeira (1886-1968) and Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), being contemporary, have both a peculiar way representing death in literature. Bandeira has it as a leitmotiv of his work, while Pessoa subtly inserts in his poetry, either through his orthonymous or heteronyms, sometimes with irony, and sometimes naturally. In this sense, this present work begins by studying the "escritura com a morte", with the analyzis of some poems by writers who refer to this theme, especially those who use the night as a synonym / metaphor, relying on the dialogue with Berenice Berardinelli, Donaldo Schüler, Antônio Cândido, Gaston Bachelard and Octavio Paz, seeking encounters between these nocturnal poetics of death. The last two decades have witnessed the emergence of a growing interest in the evolution of the urban night. However, the touristification of the urban night has received only limited attention in contemporary social sciences. Until now, academic research has explored night tourism mainly in relation to specific contexts or events: tourist resorts or springbreaks. The focus was placed on the health and safety risks associated with excessive drinking, recreational drug use and casual sex. More recently, researchers have begun to theorize these forms of holiday as a form of temporary departures from the participants' daily lives. While this vision of night tourism as a temporary departure is still dominant, recent studies have revealed a more complex reality. For this reason, this paper proposes the development of a new research agenda aimed at questioning the progressive diversification of tourist practices during the night in the city and the urban issues that these dynamics produce.

- Abstract
This article discussed the participation of women in the cultural production of the night of Córdoba (Arg.), based on two ethnographic works made in the world of electronic music. How is the trajectory of women artists related to gender as a form of reproduction of inequality? What other diacritics of the difference order the relations between artists in that context? To answer these questions, we analyze the trajectories of women who worked as DJs and how doing gender and present themselves as women built a possibility to show their art and develop their career. This article focuses on the political and social dimensions of urban lighting. It studies the role of public lighting and its importance in urban policy for the transformation of urban spaces. This analysis is based on a study of the urban policy led in Bordeaux over the past two decades. Indeed, the municipality has had an active urban-light policy since the mid-1990s, which has considerably modified its night-time life, landscape and public spaces. The text analyzes the diversity of urban planning tools and the geographical choices made in terms of public lighting, the gap between the geography of urban lighting and the uses of the city during the night, as well as the links between the social composition of spaces in Bordeaux and the lighting policy applied there. It highlights how urban lighting deeply affects the social geography of the city.

Nightlife - a tourism product to be included in urba n planning.Artificial light and important social and economic changes offered night new uses and new landscapes that had influenced territorial planning and the urban form. Cities are where the space-time night has suffered major transformations, due to its population density and economic and cultural production. The challenges of the night-time period have been approached from different points of view: crime issues, insecurity, alcohol disorderly behaviours, and others associated with leisure and artistic activities at night. These two last perspectives are the ones that are going to be analyzed, in order reinforce the growing relation between night and tourism. The main goal of this paper focuses the study of the nighttime leisure activities relevance and its role in the touristic attraction. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the attractiveness of events and leisure activities that occur at night, as a crucial ingredient to promote cities image and contribute to its development.

A deep and profound lifelessness depicts the Malagasy capital city at night. How can we explain this “sleep” of the sole economic, political and cultural center of the island? There is a real paradox that we need to analyze before anything else. Nevertheless, this quietness should not hide the presence of families and children who live in the streets night and day. Therefore, to take a look at the night life of Antananarivo brings a question about urban identities and temporalities. On the one hand, there are those that claim the legitimacy of their city-dwelling status – the inhabitants, on the other hand, those who are excluded from it.

The night activities in Nancy are very limited and mostly reduced to «leisure activities», the evolution of which is linked to technical factors such as lighting control, to geographical factors such as the lighting distribution in the urban space or the perception of the seasonal obligations linked to the climate in the East of France, but also to sociological factors such as the lifestyle or the social composition of the neighbourhoods. Today, «parties» have overall been replaced by individual leisure activities in specialized establishments for townspeople looking for «entertainment» while the night leaves the city to those for whom it becomes the place of every fantasy. Faced with an increasing demand for «leisure activities» and nocturnal lifespace, this socially quite city is searching for conciliation between the city’s primary nocturnal function –rest- and its more limited night-time entertainment function all the while progressively shifting from the old town center (today transformed into a more classical residential area) to the periphery.

How different pedagogies work in the metropolis nocturnal time space? In order to answer this question, the main objective of this thesis consists of give visibility to the pedagogies that are configured and operate in the night of Porto Alegre city, RS, Brazil. Therefore, the research sought to investigate how certain nocturnal public places provide conditions that entice learning experiences implied with what I call pedagogies of the night. Inscribed in the field of Cultural Studies in Education and based on theoretical assumptions about the cultural transformations highlighted by S. Hall, T. Eagleton, Z. Bauman and R. Williams, the research is inserted in the discussions raised by authors such as H. Giroux, S Steinberg, E. Ellsworth, MV Costa. V. C. Camozzato and P. D. Andrade around the pluralization of pedagogy concept and its spaces of acting. The first research movement pursued to map the representations of the night in the Arts field, as well as in the productions of Social and Human Sciences in which the subject has been object of study. This collection evidenced the different views, both for the nocturnal imaginaries formation and for the diversity of experiences lived at night, suggesting different modes of conduction in their time-spaces. The second movement consisted of field outing in which the researcher-flâneur traced nocturnal routes in the central region of Porto Alegre. The selected night spots were three viaducts, two streets of a bohemian neighborhood and a large city park. The research used a hybrid research methodology, utilizing procedures inspired by the "postmodern ethnography" practiced by S. Gottschalk, by the "casual observation" technique described by Lorite García and by "polyphonic methodology" adopted by M. Canevacci (2005). The corpus of analysis was composed from the observations and records of the nocturnal social practices and the subject’s reports approached in the investigated places. Living in solitude, clinging to personal belongings and protecting them, as well as the distrust, result as learnings of those who inhabit viaducts at night. In the bohemian streets, the adoption of aesthetic forms, the encounters and the search for affective relationships are behaviors learned in the pedagogies of the night. Learning to know each other's intentions through the use of "tactics" and "abilities" have been emphasized as experiences in the life at night. Common to all places and reports, there have been experiences in which fear and insecurity promote learning for protection in the urban night life. Authors like R. Sennett, M. Canevacci, M. Maffesoli, Yi Fu-Tuan, M. Certeau, J. Larrosa and D. W. Winnicott supported the analytical discussions. The relation of the "self" to the other and with the place was identified as the main line of learning experiences developed through external conditions and how they are internalized by the subjects. Intrinsic to the ways of living and learning, these movements of "exteriorization" and "interiorization" allowed to visualize how the pedagogies are configured and operate at night. Functioning as articulation movements, the pedagogies of the night provide experiences in which the subjects learn to drive and conduct themselves as well as to be conducted in the situations and conditions that certain metropolis nocturnal places provide.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior From the study of narratives of Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa, we attempted to identify, catalog and describe some elements that they turn on their literary discourse. Readings were taken on a considerable part of the author's work, which originated assertions, assumptions and relationships observed in this study. By analyzing rosianos statements, prioritized five highlight relevant essential discursive themes in his speech, which were divided and organized into five themes: "love, night, religion, people and nature." The authors chosen as analytical support to address the love were the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle, thinkers Erich Fromm, Benedito Nunes, Arthur Schopenhauer, André Comte- Sponville Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman and semiotician Algirdas Greimas. The authors required as analytical support to treat religiosity were the philosopher St. Augustine, the Essayist Elisa Guimarães and two experts in iconography, Jacopo Varazze and Nilza Botelho Megale. The authors adopted as analytical support for crushing the night were the folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo, the demonologist Eliphas Lévi and literary critic Massaud Moisés. The authors listed as analytical support to subsidize the axis on the speech of the people were the socio- linguist Dino Preti, sociologist Roger Bastide, the philosopher Jean - Jacques Rousseau, the thinker Antonio Candido, the anthropologist Claude Lévi - Strauss and again the folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo. The authors used as analytical support to embrace nature were Heraclitus of Ephesus and Empedocles of Agrigento philosophers and thinkers Humberto Maturana, Francisco Varela, Fritjof Capra and Gaston Bachelard.

ABSTRACT - Context: The existence of variations is common in the number and level of experience of health professionals available in hospitals during the night and weekend. The consequences of this situation on the quality of the healthcare provided to the patients, reveals the importance of this study, conducted with the aim of assessing the impact of the moment of admission on mortality and length of stay. Methodology: This study included 201 369 urgent admissions, with a primary diagnosis of the 36 selected, according to the information in the database of abstracts of the year 2012. The moment of admission was defined by period (weekdays/weekends) and time (day/night), and the weekend and night effects were accessed by logistic regression models. Results: There was an increase of 3% in the risk of death in patients admitted on weekends. There were no differences between patients admitted at day or night. Regarding the length of stay, there was a 3% increase in the likelihood of patients admitted during the weekend to have an average delay of superior relocation. As well as patients admitted overnight showed an increase of 2,9% on the probability of having a longer average internment delay. Conclusion: The data presented here allow a better knowledge about the influence of variation in hospital activity throughout the day and the week in Portuguese hospitals. It identifies the need to extend this matter research and to implement measures to eliminate the weekend and night effects.

International audience; WE ARE IN IN SÃO PAULO. WE WANT TO DEVELOP NEW WAYS OF THINKING ABOUT URBAN NIGHTLIFE. NIGHTLIFE IS A NEW FRONTIER FOR AN OLD SOCIETY. NIGHTLIFE IS A PLATFORM FOR EXPERIMENTATION. NIGHTLIFE IS THE DOMAIN OF ALL AND NO ONE. OUR PRINCIPLES FOR THE NIGHT AND THE CITY: LIGHT UP THE NIGHT WITHOUT DESTROYING IT; LIVEN UP THE NIGHT RESPECTING THE BIOLOGICAL RHYTHMS OF RESIDENTS; GUARANTEE PUBLIC SAFETY WITHOUT CURFEWS; UNFASTEN THE NIGHT WHILE PROTECTING THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE THAT WORK IN IT; ALLOW FOR CONTINUITY BETWEEN CENTER AND PERIPHERY, AVOIDING A ONE-DIMENSIONAL NIGHT; REGULATE THE NIGHT WHILE CARING TO PRESERVE ITS TRANSGRESSIVE CHARACTER; AVOID ALL-ENCOMPASSING REGULATION OF THE NIGHT WITHOUT, HOWEVER, ABANDONING IT TO MARKET FORCES; LINK UP THE ‘RIGHT TO THE CITY’ WITH THE ‘RIGHT TO THE NIGHT’; INTERVENE IN THE NIGHT WHILE PRESERVING ITS SENSE OF MYSTERY. WE DEMAND THE RIGHT TO THE CITY’S NIGHT AND TO A FULLY-FLEDGED 24H CITIZENSHIP. THE NIGHT HAS MANY THINGS TO SAY TO THE DAY. SÃO PAULO, MARCH 21ST 2014.

The choice of the 1930s relates to the context of urbanization and modernization of the city, perceived in the analysis of urban development, electrification and promotion of cultural activities. It is evident the relationship of the city and its inhabitants with conceptions and notions of behavior linked to the ideals of modernity and civility, which carried elements of regulation that served the emergence of a capitalism oriented to consumer relations. The confrontation between these new patterns of social interaction and those old values inherited of a rural way-of-life, is considered in this work through the analysis of the night-time sociabilities present in this popular universe. The night-time, chosen by favoring the dominance of employees on their free time, reveals these and other traces of a popular culture that presents itself effervescent and singular, establishing exchanges not only with Brazil - taking into account Vargas's policy prevailing in the period, to bring together all Brazilian states through popular culture - but also with other countries bordering the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Starting from the statements and testimony contained in police investigations and criminal prosecutions of the period, it becomes possible to visualize the vitality of a popular night that wandered through the streets and filled urban space with their meetings, their conflicts and their loves. In order to take some steps to fill this gap in the history of Pelotas, we propose here to discuss the theme "popular night" so that the city of mansions and charqueadas could be also known for its night owls, who, generation to generation, give life to Pelotas's night until today.

A noção de surgimento em ontologia é então associada ao uso da ideia de noite no mito do horizonte em Eudoro de Sousa, The essay explores the notion of horizon in Eudoro de Sousa under the light of the principle of irreduction put forward by Bruno Latour. The investigation of what is originary in ontology – carried out with the help of the notion of instauration as used by Souriau and Latour – takes us to a reading of pre-socratic philosophers such as Anaximander and Anaxagoras from the viewpoint of process philosophy. The notion of bringing something about in ontology is then connected to the use of the idea of night in the myth of the horizon as presented by Eudoro de Sousa.

At the turn of the Middle Ages to the Modern Age no doubt all actions on board, whether performed by a sailor or by the Admiral, were inseparable from an imaginary marked by fantasy, visions and fears, particularly from the ocean night. An unclear substratum where the dominant factors were hardly measurable or quantifiable. They were rather something abstract, which came and went depending on the emotional intensity of the circumstances and on the greater or lesser weight, but always present, of a cultural heritage that conveyed a very special way of feeling and reacting before the oceanic phenomena.
