This article aims to analyze the demand for residential real estate in Natal in the light of subjective factors, among which the search for social differentiation exposed in the works of Thorstein Veblen, notably in his book The Theory of the Leisure Class (1987). The research is based on semi-structured interviews with brokers employed in real estate companies in the city, between December 2017 and January 2018. The working hypothesis is that the motivation for the purchase of residential real estate is subject to socially constructed references, which appear in the forms of exaltation of status symbols and emulation mechanisms, setting up their conspicuous consumption. The research results increase the degree of confidence in the validity of the hypothesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
