This article focuses on the problem of Mathematics and English Integrated Learning (MLIL) by future Mathematics teachers. Our literature review on the problem shows a variety of aspects that scientists consider when studying the MLIL model. However, previous researches did not consider the problem of appropriate learning materials (LM) for MLIL in detail. The paper shows the results of two conducted surveys of students majoring in Mathematics and Secondary Education (Mathematics) in Ukraine (82 and 32 participants, respectively). They helped us to make a conclusion about: the importance of the integrated learning for both mathematical and language students’ competence; the importance of syllabus elements reflecting both the mathematical and linguistic components of the goals, objectives, and the expected learning outcomes; the necessity of the MLIL content to be consistent with the current needs of students; the necessity of using different means of scaffolding, in particular the opportunities of ICT.

The article examines the problem of the shaping of CLIL specialist’s content competence in the conditions of training and professional training of teachers. As it is known in CLIL, successful teaching of subject content depends primarily on the language; in-depth study of the language depends on the subject content. The article focuses on some of the advantages of CLIL competencies, such as, a CLIL specialist possesses both subject and language competence simultaneously, i.e. the CLIL process does not provide for the development of specific competences in any subject or language. The article notes that CLIL specialist’s content competence is a set of knowledge in the field of subject which is taught and in the field of an additional language necessary for teaching them simultaneously by using the integrative approach.

Resumen: Los objetivos de este análisis son, en primer lugar, mostrar las pautas para realizar una adecuada planificación temporal de las asignaturas online diseñadas para la formación de profesorado para impartir clases con el método de aprendizaje integrado de contenido y lengua (AICL), en segundo lugar, proponer una evaluación adecuada para medir los conocimientos adquiridos y, finalmente, proponer los criterios que han de seguir los docentes en la formación de cursos online para ofrecer una planificación temporal y una evaluación adecuada. Para cumplir estos objetivos, se identificaron los pasos que se proponen en las distintas asignaturas del título de Experto Universitario con Competencia Profesional para la Enseñanza en Valenciano que se ha impartido en la Universitat Politècnica de València en los cursos 2016-17 y 2017-18 a un total de 1.000 alumnos. A continuación, se detectaron y analizaron las pautas de la planificación temporal que realizan los docentes de las distintas asignaturas del título propio, así como los distintos tipos de la evaluación realizada. A partir de este análisis, se comparó la planificación temporal y la evaluación con las notas de los alumnos obtenidas en estas asignaturas, así como con las encuestas de satisfacción de las asignaturas online. Abstract: The objectives of this analysis are, in the first place, to show the steps to design an adequate time planning of the online subjects designed to train teachers in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). In the second place, to propose the specific kind of evaluation that allows us to assess the knowledge acquired by online students and, finally, to propose the criteria that may follow lecturers in the time planning design and evaluation of online subjects. In order to attain these objectives, we identified the steps that are proposed in the different subjects of the diploma University Expert with Professional Competence for Teaching in Valencian that was taught at Universitat Politècnica de València during the academic years 2016-17 and 2017-18 to a total of 1,000 students. Then, we analysed and spotted the different parts of the time planning designed by the teachers of the subjects taught in the diploma and the different types of evaluation proposed. From this analysis, the time planning and evaluation were compared with the marks obtained in the subjects as well as the subjects’ questionnaires to know the efficacy of the time planning and evaluation carried out in the online subjects. While the growing trend of internationalisation and globalisation has been addressed by policymakers and the interest in adopting the CLIL approach has increased, calls have been made for uncovering how teachers can develop ways of designing and implementing corresponding materials and engage students in such an approach. This is a collaborative study that explores in details, based on the Interactional Ethnographic approach, the processes of how the researcher and the teacher worked together in an egalitarian setting to design and carry out a CLIL unit. Throughout this five-month research involved with multiple stages of development of resources, with an English teacher and sixteen of her Grade 4 students, I have made visible the multiple forms of our collaboration and the important issues for consideration with implications in closing the gap between research and practice, and between design and implementation. Finally, I conclude that the researcher-teacher collaborative approach laid out by event maps could be an innovative way to re-examine and reflect upon the dynamics between the researcher and the researched by acknowledging and fortifying the bond between the two.

This mixed-methods study investigated perceptions and knowledge about content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and bilingual education. Data were collected using surveys, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews from 26 content-based teachers in Valledupar, Colombia, before and after their participation in an online training program. Findings revealed that teamwork and administrative support are crucial factors for a successful CLIL implementation. However, results also showed that teachers knew very little about the CLIL approach, although they claimed to have been using it at their schools for 3-4 years before the study, suggesting that any previous in-service teacher training had not resulted in an adequate understanding of CLIL or bilingual education for the context.The teachers’ perceptions of CLIL and bilingualism were more positive after the training, and they reported understanding similarities and differences between both concepts. Hence, there is a need for more specialized training (material design, planning, communication, and assessment) to better prepare in-service teachers for bi-/multilingual learning environments, which in turn would provide teachers with much-needed tools for more effective delivery of CLIL-oriented solutions.

This research article presents the results of an exploratory study that was conducted with a group of 14 early childhood education pre-service teachers at a private Colombian university. It intended to determine: 1) the amount of metalanguage expressions used for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) and foreign language (FL) content; 2) the number of concepts related to the teaching of EFL and FL content pre-service teachers were able to learn in a 7-session (14 face-to-face hours) course based on a methodology inspired by the content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach, using songs, rhymes, and poems in English; 3) the degree of difficulty pre-service teachers perceived about teaching English and English content to young children. This quasi-experimental study was performed with pre- and post-study tests given to one group, analyzing quantitative data through a non-parametric statistical hypothesis test and a non-parametric measure of rank correlation. Pre-service teachers were found to successfully learn vocabulary and concepts, but their perceptions about the degree of difficulty of teaching EFL and FL content remained basically the same as prior to the course. In addition, the correlation between the participants’ level of English and their learning process was analyzed, as well as the correlation between English proficiency level and perception of the degree of difficulty of teaching EFL and FL content. The results show a strong correlation in the first case, but no correlation for the second one.

The paper begins by approaching the concept of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) providing a brief overview of the history of bilingual education. The influence of the linguistic policies of the European Union is discussed along with some beliefs about language teaching and how both have influenced the celerity of CLIL implementation, momentum and expansion. There are some indicators of the lack of a theoretical framework for CLIL, of insufficient teacher education and or inadequacy of materials. It is necessary to reflect systematically on to what extent commercially published textbooks match the demands of bilingual education. The second section centers on CLIL textbooks, mainly those commercialized by publishers, by referring to some recent studies which attempt to approach systematically their design and use. Since, by definition CLIL includes both content and language, our research question is if content books (in English) also include content and language objectives. A corpus of 25 books from different subjects, years, and publishers is analyzed. The analysis shows an insufficient presence of linguistic objectives. Some reflections are made about this scarcity with the warning that this lack could hindrance an efficient implementation of CLIL. Thus, it could be said that these textbooks are not the product of discipline or didactic considerations but the result of the logic of market, publishers and linguistic policy.How to reference this articleMartín del Pozo, M. The phenomenon of post-globalization, which has been felt on a large scale in present-day society, brings with it social, political, economic and cultural consequences and requires a great effort of the whole community to adapt to the new demands which entails. It is in this context that the CLIL4U project arises, whose main objective is to foster a dialogue of cultures from an early age through content and language integrated process of learning. In this article, we will present the project and its assumptions, implementation and evaluation. Using an ethnographic and mostly qualitative research methodology, we will focus our attention on the representations that students, teachers and parents have of the implementation of the project and its monitoring. The results show that CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) projects can be an asset to primary school institutions, in what concerns the construction of a teaching centred on the proactive learning of contents.
