ABSTRACT Objectives: to evaluate the impact of educational intervention on understanding health recommendations after liver transplantation. Methods: randomized and prospective clinical trial, with 68 liver transplant recipients in two institutions. The level of understanding was assessed using a statement agreement scale and the understanding score was classified. Chi-square test was used to compare groups. Results: the level of understanding was reasonable in 77.9% of patients, 73.5% in the Control Group and 82.3% in the Intervention Group (p=0.399). For topics covered after educational action, there were more than 80% correct answers regarding nutrition, frequent hydration, usage and function of immunosuppressants. However, there were less than 10% correct answers regarding hand hygiene, contact with animals and crowds of people. The use of the patient’s audio, visual and tactile resources led to improved understanding of skin care (p=0.014). Conclusions: the level of understanding acquired regarding health recommendations was only reasonable.

Introduction: Some studies show that participants do not always fully understand the informed consent form (ICF), which is one of the reasons for dropouts. This study aimed to adapt the Quality of Informed Consent (QuIC) questionnaire into a valid instrument to be applied to the Portuguese population and to measure its reliability and validity in the Portuguese population, by applying it to a sample of participants in controlled trials. Methods: The QuIC questionnaire was developed to assess the quality of informed consent in clinical trials and consists of two parts, addressing both the objective (part A) and the subjective (part B) understanding. After being translated and validated into Portuguese, it was implemented in 100 cardiac participants of phase III clinical trials in a University Hospital Center. Results: The QuIC-PT questionnaire showed excellent stability over time and good validity. All patients evaluated their participation and their health positively and recognized the main purpose of the clinical trial. Almost all participants understood their role in helping future patients and the purpose of the trial and realized that, by signing the ICF, they were participating in a clinical trial. However, none of them knew that their experimental treatment was not proven to be the best alternative for their condition. Conclusion: The QuIC-PT questionnaire seems to be a valid and useful instrument to evaluate the participants’ understanding of the ICF. In this study, we found that some concepts, like ‘study protocol’ or ‘randomization’, were not well understood by participants when signing the ICF, especially by participants with lower education levels. They also believed that the experimental intervention would solve their health condition. Greater awareness about the importance of the informed consent process and ICF is necessary so that participants can fully understand the protocol, especially the risks involved, and their rights as participants.

The present study investigated cross-linguistic structural priming effects from L1 to L2 during the comprehension of the passive voice in a group of 35 Brazilian Portuguese-English (BP-EN) late bilinguals. A 4 x 2 experimental design was implemented that included a four levels within-subjects Condition variable and a between-subjects Proficiency variable (Intermediate vs. Advanced). Results show that, regardless of proficiency, participants read target sentences faster in both experimental conditions when compared to the control conditions. Noticeably, cross-linguistic structural priming effects were observed even in the absence of translation equivalents. That is, both abstract and lexically mediated structural cross-linguistic effects were observed. These findings indicate that late bilinguals at intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency have a shared syntactic system between their L1 and L2.

For philosophical hermeneutics, understanding is a universal phenomenon, which, therefore, is not restricted to procedural rules or any method. However, the former faces a problem when, on the one hand, it pretends to be a non-methodical way of understanding and, on the other hand, at the same time, it defends some "rules" for a proper understanding. That said, this article aims to elucidate this ambiguity and to show some possible consequences. First, we briefly show the argument in defense of the universality of hermeneutics and, therefore, how the natural sciences would be implied by it. Next, we point to some of the normative aspects that seem to compose the understanding phenomenon, as presented to us by Gadamer. Finally, we conclude that a dialogue between philosophical hermeneutics and the natural sciences is necessary not only for interpretative purposes, overcoming possible conflicts and contradictions of this philosophy, but also for contributing to scientific activity in general, making it - perhaps - more conscious and vigilant about its historicity. The present study has as a theme the intersections between multiliteracies and educommunication, more specifically in their similarities concerning the language. The problem which motivated the research is the fact that, though these concepts come from different areas, i.e., Linguistics, Education and Communication, they present things in common. This research is justified by the comprehension of the interdisciplinary characteristic from Applied Linguistics, that can involve both concepts in their applicabilities. The general aim of this work is to acknowledge the similarities between multiliteracies and educommunication, as for the specific aim to assess the teacher possibilities concerning both concepts in language teaching classes. The research is based on the comprehension of language from Bakhtin (1997, 2006), Volochínov (2013), Citelli, (2006) regarding the concept of communication ecosystem, Martín-Barbero, (2014) about the school borders and the interactions among the subjects, Soares, (2011) concerning the concept of educommunication, Kalantzis et al., (2016), Lemke, (2010), Street, (2006), Cazden et al. (1996) and Paulino & Cosson, (2009) about the multiliteracies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TEACHERS , *TEACHING methods , *MOMENTS method (Statistics) , *READING , *PORTUGUESE language , *ACCOUNTING methods , *CONTENT analysis - Abstract
The present article intends to reflect on the work of preparing the text before delineating pedagogical strategies, valuing the linguistic knowledge of the Portuguese L1 teacher for the delineation of a sustained and coherent didactic path. The text assumes the central role of the class countless times, trying to make the student reflect on their linguistic structures. In this context, the book O Dragão, by Luísa Ducla Soares, constitutes the starting point for exemplifying a possible text preparation work. It is intended to emphasize that this previous moment of textual analysis allows highlighting the pedagogical potential of the text, so that, in a second moment, depending on the objectives and the class, a didactic route can be defined. Finally, it is in this line, in which text and reading are assumed as fundamental aspects in Portuguese classes, that a possible reading route is presented, taking into account the specific methodology of this domain. Despite the importance of oral expression in interaction in society, this component is not always deserving of a prominent place in the teaching/learning of foreign languages (FL). If we look at some of the best-selling FL Portuguese teaching methods, we realize that this skill is less valued than the rest. In order to broaden the range of tools available to teachers, a manual was prepared as a tool, Por Falar Nisso, totally focus to the promotion of communicative competence, presenting a complementary proposal of speaking exercises, from levels A1 to C2, having into account three main domains: personal, public and professional. READING comprehension , *COMPREHENSION , *MATHEMATICS education , *MATHEMATICS , *PROBLEM solving , *ELEMENTARY schools - Abstract
Solving mathematical problems involves some specific skills, such as quantitative reasoning, already consolidated in the literature as a predictor for mathematical performance and reading comprehension, whose relationship with performance in mathematics needs further studies. Therefore, this study sought to analyze the relationship between reading comprehension skills and performance in solving mathematical problems, also considering quantitative reasoning. For that, 127 students from the 3rd and 4th grades of elementary school from two schools in Porto Alegre - RS performed the tasks of quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension and solving mathematical problems. For the analysis, the sample was divided into low, medium, and high-performance categories in each task. The results showed that there was no significant association between reading comprehension and problem solving, however, we found a significant association between problem solving and quantitative reasoning and between quantitative reasoning and reading comprehension. The importance of quantitative reasoning for mathematical performance is confirmed. We argue that problem solving requires a reading comprehension with knowledge beyond the language commonly used in interpreting school texts, but a specific language of mathematics. The study of the diet quality should include not just the nutritional adequacy but also incorporate the multidimensional understanding and the current dietary recommendations. This study aimed to evaluate the relevance, clarity, and comprehensibility of the Scale of Quality of Diet (ESQUADA). Nutritionists’ perspectives about the relevance and clarity of the items were evaluated through focus groups between November and December 2016. An exploratory content analysis investigated the themes that emerged from the focus groups, which were organized in a structured codebook. Two reviewers applied it to the data. Inter-rater reliability was analyzed by the kappa coefficient. The coding was analyzed using the frequencies and central aspects of the sub-themes. Laypersons’ comprehension of the items was evaluated using a question regarding whether they understood each item in online questionnaire in February 2018. Descriptive statistics investigated the comprehensibility of each item. The reviewers presented adequate reliability on coding the data. Three themes emerged from the data considering the nutritionists’ suggestions. The theme Item relevance indicated that the items assessed diet quality while considering sociocultural influences. However, the nutritionists suggested attention was needed to how some items were expressed and their response options. Of relevance, the themes Item clarity and Clarity of alternatives primarily encompassed discussions regarding item text (44%) and discrimination of alternatives (24%). The study of the comprehensibility indicated that all items were readily understood. These results support the relevance of the ESQUADA for evaluating quality of diet as well the comprehensibility of all the items by individuals uneducated in public health.

This article analyses the creative process of Khorwa-Myalwa (2016), for bass flute and electronics, by Mikhail Malt, created under the computer-aided composition (CAC) paradigm. Our vision is anchored in three aspects: a) the ideas about intellectual technologies and hypertext by philosopher Pierre Lévy (2010), b) the theories about computer creativity by Margaret Boden (2009; 2004), and c) the theoretical propositions about models by Mikhail Malt (2015) and Ronald Giere (2004). We have then developed a new approach that considers the creative process as a network interacting with the various actors of CAC. We defined the notion of hyper-score to represent this network of computational tools, programming environments, databases and representations that arise during CAC. The hyper-score is a valuable tool for the comprehension of the agencies in CAC and is useful for both the analyst and the composer interested in understanding its processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzes the different approaches to the term "interdisciplinarity" in scientific research. The study does not intend to establish a consolidated concept of interdisciplinarity, instead, it intends to propose considerations and contributions to a better understanding of the subject. The study contextualizes interdisciplinarity in Brazilian research and uses Content Analysis to analyze 46 papers published in the last five years. The result is the identification of nine categories of the concept of interdisciplinarity and its characteristics, based on the authors who present studies on this subject. From the identified categories, interdisciplinarity can be understood as: an alternative to knowledge production; a potential for holistic analysis beyond the combination of informal knowledge and disciplines; the blend of various fields of knowledge; a possibility for new knowledge from the discipline interactions; a way of overcoming disciplinary limits; a perspective from the research subject; a perspective from the research object. The analysis of the categories reveals the conceptual amplitude and the practice of interdisciplinarity as a driving element for academic research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the light of Cultural History, this article proposed to listen to the pilgrims present in the Pilgrimage of Bonfim, of Natividade (TO), as a way to analyze their understanding of the bodily performances performed before the sacred image of Bonfim, in the central Shrine of the village. Through interviews, we found, for example, that the body is an elementary and essential part of religious festivities and that it expresses desires and feelings. In the ambiance of the religious space, most of the saint’s devotees demonstrate to understand the meanings and symbologies attributed to the ritualized body in the position of media body. The purpose of this study is to discuss the concept of "verse" and "poetic rhythm". With this investigation, we try to understand the idea of "free verse", one of the main characteristics of the XIX's production of Portuguese poetic work. For this, we introduce considerations about the first two concepts, specially about these etymological origins, with the purpose to figure how "free verse" deals with the traditional idea of rhythm in poetry, which is no longer submitted to the versification's theories. This paper seeks to understand the verifiable presence of "knights" and "squires" in the municipal council meetings in Porto in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, using the books of "Atas de Vereação" of the period under analysis, but also by crossing with other documentary sources. We try to understand how this reality coexisted with the privilege that the city had long held and for which it permanently fought for centuries, at least until the reign of D. Manuel I, which prevented the residence and/or stay of noblemen within the walls of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is intended to discuss the interactions between the body and the contemporary city, based on Jürgen Habermas's philosophy of, through an intersubjective and, at the same time, communicative construction. It is intended to discuss the interactions between the body and the contemporary city based on Jürgen Habermas's philosophy, through an intersubjective and, at the same time, communicative construction. The literature review on body and city was grouped by means of geographical speeches in four thematic axis: urban mobility, the exclusion/inclusion, besides the ones of identities and practices. The common and different perspectives served as a basis for the interpretations of the interactions between body and city through Jurgen Habermas's thinking. Therefore, the mediation of language, of dramaturgical action, of the paradox of the identity of the Self are promising on a geographic-intersubjective way of understanding the relationship between body and city. ELECTRIC spark , *ACQUISITION of data , *CONCEPTS , *DEFINITIONS - Abstract
This paper discusses the meaning of tension based on Bakhtin and The Circle's concepts of comprehension and evaluation, considering that the construction of the meanings occurs in the encounter of two opposite poles, as an electric spark (VOLOSHINOV, 2017 [1973]). The research questions are two: what is tension as a theoretical reflection? What are the possible tension points when considering comprehension and evaluation in the texts selected among the works of Bakhtin and The Circle? After the data collection phase in papers of a specialized journal, we noticed three works in which we verified a recurrence of the concepts analyzed. Theoretical definitions and reflections about the meaning of tension lead to two centers of circulation of clashing values. Concerning the outcome of this research, comprehension and evaluation (two centers of value) act as a double of each other in the preparation of an active response by a speaker. PRACTICAL politics , *NARRATIVES , *READING , *PUBLISHING , *COMPREHENSION , *ELECTIONS - Abstract
This article examines the context of production of the National Common Curricular Base, discussing elements highlighted as symbolic landmarks of the changes that the BNCC brings to education. The election of these elements for analysis has the motto of an advertisement published in the media by the Ministry of Education shortly after the promulgation of BNCC by the Federal Council of Education. The constructed narrative takes on a tone of consensual agreement that obliterates disputes over the points highlighted. To highlight these disputes is the objective of this text, arguing, from a post-structuralist discursive perspective, that these disputes have not ceased, in the understanding of politics as a process of contingent signification, which implies reading it as a provisional closing, opening to negotiation. This article discusses the place of the voice in the notion of chiffonnage -- which Lacan sketches in Seminar 24 -- as a direction of healing or, more precisely, an intervention towards the sinthome. Chiffonnage is understood as a clinical intervention using the voice, i.e., an intervention that operates on phonation, on the voice that is, in the body, an actual instinct of the fact that there is a saying. The voice here lies beyond the wall of the word, it requires breaking the wall, chiffonner the word to make a different use of it than the original one. This operation requires twisting the voice to invent a new signifier free of any meaning, as opposed to the actual one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIGNITY , *COMMUNICATION in law , *COMMUNICATION laws , *COMPREHENSION , *A priori , *CONCEPTS , *LISTENING comprehension - Abstract
Language is a communication tool and required for the formulation and application of behavior rules. There is an indissoluble connection between Law and Communication since the comprehension of the latter makes possible knowledge on Law. Current strategic, descriptive, documental and bibliographic research reveals the person through deduction to elucidate the principle of the Dignity of the Human Person. The person as a consequent subject of rights, is a term that requires an a priori meaning so that, later on, one may understand its dignity. Besides the general aim to analyze the term person inserted within different historical contexts, the concept of the person is presented as a result by the rational-vitalist theory. As demonstrated, it is the most adequate theory for the concept of the person in current Brazilian neo-constitutionalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay is based on a series of interviews with individuals who participated in the Portuguese Colonial War and seeks to understand how the war experience contributes to the formation of individual and collective identity, as well as to their perception of otherness and the sedimentation of prejudices arising from the colonial ideal. These testimonies were contextualized within the portuguese history, from the time in question until today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMON good ,CRITICISM ,COMPREHENSION - Abstract
In the 5
th century BC, in Athens, Antiphon reflects on the relationship between physis and nómos in a way quite different from most sophists. Indeed, one of the particularities of sophist thought is to minimize physis so that thinking focus itself on nómos, on what man can, through thinking and debate, establish in regard to the common good and justice in the pólis. However, Antiphon takes up this relationship between nature and law to direct it to another path. In an unusual way for a sophist, we see physis being emphasized at the expense of nómos. The comparison between the two concepts also serves as a backdrop for harsh criticisms of justice and laws. The objective of this article is, through the criticisms Antiphon makes to the system of the laws of the pólis, to think about the relationship established by the sophist between physis and nómos in order to find out if there is a new understanding of these concepts and to reflect the reason that led Antiphon to revisit them. CONCEPTS , *COMPREHENSION , *SKEPTICISM - Abstract
In this paper I examine the notion of ataraxia as present in the pyrrhonian skepticism of Sextus Empiricus. My purpose is to show that, in spite of preserving aspects that seem to be associated with this concept already in Pyrrho's philosophy, it changes substantially and has, at least in the Hypotypes, a fundamental aspect corresponding to an "intellectual" tranquility associated with the suppression of the type of philosophical disturbance that skepticism would remove. I would also like to show that such a peculiarity would allow us to understand how it would relate in a coherent way to the notion of Pyrrhonic skeptical inquiry. In order to achieve it, we also examinate how it is connected with Sextus's conceptions of "philosophical therapy" and "epokhe about all things". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
