Environmental education comes to develop in the population a perception that it is the main protagonist when it comes to the conservation of biodiversity. Bats have an extensive diversity, are of great ecological importance, using insects and other arthropods, fruits, seeds, leaves, flowers, pollen, nectar, small vertebrates and blood as food, contributing to the dispersion of seeds and the control of insects, however, an erroneous perception of bats is portrayed. This work sought to demystify the prejudiced and erroneous concepts that people have about these mammals, promoting the awareness of elementary school students at Escola Estado da Paraíba. An exploratory class was held addressing the ecology of bats, and a questionnaire was applied to analyze the knowledge of the students and after the class, as well as a game was made “Tabuleiro dos Morcegos Brasileiros” where there were questions and challenges, which required participants to prior knowledge of bat ecology. It was verified by means of the second questionnaire that the explanations about the characteristics of bats and their relationship with the environment contributed for the children to stop having a misconception about bats. There is a lack of information regarding the importance of bats, these animals have a great role in nature, such as reforestation and pest control. However, they are still targets of prejudice and misinformation for many people. La educación ambiental viene a desarrollar en la población la percepción de que es la principal protagonista cuando se trata de la conservación de la biodiversidad. Los murciélagos tienen una extensa diversidad, asumen una gran importancia ecológica, utilizando insectos y otros artrópodos como alimento, frutos, semillas, hojas, flores, polen, néctar, pequeños vertebrados y sangre, contribuyendo a la dispersión de semillas y al control de insectos, sin embargo, se presenta una percepción errónea de los murciélagos. Este trabajo buscó desmitificar los conceptos prejuiciosos y erróneos que las personas tienen sobre estos mamíferos, promoviendo la conciencia de los estudiantes de primaria de la Escola Estado da Paraíba. Se realizó una clase exploratoria abordando la ecología de los murciélagos, y se aplicó un cuestionario para analizar los conocimientos de los estudiantes y después de la clase, así como se realizó un juego “Tabuleiro dos Morcegos Brasileiros” donde hubo preguntas y desafíos, que requirieron que los participantes conocimiento previo de la ecología de los murciélagos. Se verificó mediante el segundo cuestionario que las explicaciones sobre las características de los murciélagos y su relación con el medio contribuyeron a que los niños dejaran de tener una idea errónea sobre los murciélagos. Existe una falta de información sobre la importancia de los murciélagos, estos animales tienen un gran papel en la naturaleza, como la reforestación y el control de plagas. Sin embargo, siguen siendo objeto de prejuicios y desinformación para muchas personas. Os morcegos possuem uma extensa diversidade, assumem uma grande importância ecológica, utilizando como alimento, insetos e outros artrópodes, frutos, sementes, folhas, flores, pólen, néctar, pequenos vertebrados e sangue, contribuindo na dispersão de sementes e no controle de insetos, porém é retratado uma percepção errônea quanto aos morcegos. Buscou-se através deste trabalho desmistificar os conceitos preconceituosos e errôneos que as pessoas têm quanto a esses mamíferos, promovendo a conscientização dos estudantes do Ensino Fundamental da Escola Estado da Paraíba. Foi realizada uma aula exploratória abordando a ecologia dos morcegos, sendo aplicado um questionário para analisar o conhecimentos dos estudantes e depois da aula, como também foi confeccionado um jogo o “Tabuleiro dos Morcegos Brasileiros” onde havia perguntas e desafios, que exigia do participante um conhecimento prévio sobre a ecologia de morcegos. Verificou-se por meio do segundo questionário que as explicações sobre as características dos morcegos e suas relações com o ambiente contribuíram para que as crianças deixassem de ter uma noção equivocada sobre os morcegos. Existe falta de informação a respeito da importância dos morcegos, esses animais possuem um grande papel na natureza, como nos reflorestamentos e com o controle de pragas. Contudo ainda são alvos do preconceito e da desinformação de muitas pessoas.

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado Integrado em Ciências Farmacêuticas apresentado à Faculdade de Farmácia O Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) é um vírus da família Coronaviridae do género Betacoronavírus e do subgénero Sarbecovírus. Tal como todos os coronavírus conhecidos, este é um vírus envelopado com uma única cadeia de ácido ribonucleico (RNA) e apresenta uma estrutura esférica e um diâmetro médio de 125 mm. O genoma do SARS-CoV-2 tem 80,26 % de homologia com o genoma do SARS-CoV, daí a sua designação ter origem no último. Até à data de 19 de julho de 2020 já foram relatados mais de 14 milhões de casos positivos para a infeção por SARS-CoV e mais de 600 mil mortes, distribuídos por 228 países e territórios. Algumas proteínas estruturais são consideradas determinantes, como a proteína transmembranar, designada de proteína M, a proteína da nucleocápside, designada de proteína N, a proteína do envelope viral, designada de proteína E e a proteína Spike, designada de proteína S. A proteína S apresenta-se na forma de saliência à superfície do vírus e é responsável pela interação do vírus com o seu recetor, a Enzima de Conversão da Angiotensina II (ACE2). Esta encontra-se à superfície de algumas células, tais como células pulmonares AT2, células epiteliais estratificadas do esófago superior, enterócitos do íleo e cólon. O morcego é o reservatório e o hospedeiro principal do SARS-CoV-2, contudo existem diferentes estudos que sugerem a existência de hospedeiros intermediários, como o pangolim de Guandong e a civeta. As complicações mais comuns são ao nível pulmonar podendo progredir rapidamente e originar a Síndrome da Dificuldade Respiratória Aguda (SDRA). Esta implica lesão pulmonar e disfunção no sistema de oxigenação. Todavia, a infeção pode levar a complicações ao nível de outros órgãos, tais como o coração, vasos sanguíneos, cérebro, olhos, nariz, fígado, rins e intestinos. Até à data não existe tratamento específico para a infeção por SARS-CoV-2 e esta ainda não se encontra totalmente controlada. É essencial prevenir novas infeções e para isso, é crucial o controlo das fontes de infeção, identificação e bloqueio das rotas de transmissão e por último testar primeiramente a população mais suscetível e posteriormente a restante população. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is a virus of the Coronaviridae family of the genus Betacoronavirus and of the subgenus Sarbecovirus. Like all known coronaviruses, this is an enveloped virus with a single ribonucleic acid (RNA) strand, has a spherical structure and an average diameter of 125 mm. The SARS-CoV-2 genome has 80.26% homology with the SARS-CoV genome, hence its designation originated from the latter. As of July 19, 2020, more than 14 million positive cases have been reported for SARS- CoV infection and more than 600,000 deaths, spread across 228 countries and territories.Some structural proteins are considered determinants, such as the transmembrane protein, called the M protein, the nucleocapsid protein, called the N protein, the viral envelope protein, called the E protein and the Spike protein, called the S protein. The S protein presents itself as a protrusion on the surface of the virus and is responsible for the interaction of the virus with its receptor, the angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2). This is found on the surface of some cells, such as AT2 lung cells, stratified epithelial cells of the upper esophagus, enterocytes of the ileum and colon.The bat is a reservoir and the main host of SARS-CoV-2, however, there are different studies that suggest the existence of intermediate hosts, such as the Guandong pangolin and the civet.The most common complications are at the pulmonary level and can progress rapidly and lead to Acute Respiratory Difficulty Syndrome (ARDS). This implies lung injury and dysfunction in the oxygenation system. However, the infection can lead to complications at the level of other organs, such as the heart, blood vessels, brain, eyes, nose, liver, kidneys, and intestines.To date, there is no specific treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection, and it is not yet fully controlled. It is essential to prevent new infections and for that it is crucial to control the sources of infection, identify and block transmission routes and, finally, test the most susceptible population first and then the rest of the population.

The present study aimed to describe the histological and histochemical characteristics of the intestine and pancreas of four species of bat the family Phyllostomidae (Dryadonycteris, Capixaba, Pygoderma, bilabiatum, Chiroderma, Villosum and Phyllostomus discolor), as well as to analyze the presence of endocrine cells in these organs of the species studied, seeking to relate interspecifically the characteristics found. The animals were analyzed transferred from the zoological collection of the Microbiology Laboratory of the Department of Animal Biology (DBA) of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ).The organs were fixed (10% formalin) and conditioned in 70% alcohol. Subsequently, it was forwarded to the Laboratory of Histology and Embryology of UFRRJ, in which they were submitted to routine histological processing and immunohistochemical tests. Histologically the intestine and the pancreas of the species studied were similar. As for the immunohistochemical tests, two types of immunoreactive cells (IR) were identified in the intestinal mucosa of the studied species, 5HT and CCK producing cells. In the pancreas, immunoreactive cells (IR) were seen on insulin, glucagon on somatostatin and cholecystokinin. Through this study, there were differences in the distribution and relative frequency of endocrine cells in the small intestine of the animals studied. While in the pancreas species similarity was observed when compared to the histology and distribution of endocrine cells studied. Estudos histol?gicos, histoqu?micos e imuno-histoqu?micos v?m buscando de forma comparativa obter dados sobre o tubo gastrointestinal (TGI) de morcegos, devido ao fato destes animais possu?rem uma diversificada dieta. Assim, o presente estudo visou descrever as caracter?sticas histol?gicas e histoqu?micas do intestino e p?ncreas de quatro esp?cies de morcegos da fam?lia Phyllostomidae (Dryadonycteris. capixaba, Pygoderma. bilabiatum, Chiroderma. villosum e Phyllostomus. discolor), bem como analisar a presen?a de c?lulas end?crinas nesses ?rg?os das esp?cies estudadas, buscando relacionar interespecificamente as caracter?sticas encontradas. Os animais analisados foram cedidos da cole??o zool?gica do Laborat?rio de Mastozoologia do Departamento de Biologia Animal (DBA) da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). Posteriormente foi encaminhado ao Laborat?rio de Histologia e Embriologia da UFRRJ, no qual foram submetidos aos processamentos histol?gicos de rotina e aos testes imuno-histoqu?micos. Histologicamente o intestino e o p?ncreas das esp?cies estudadas foram similares. Quanto aos testes imuno-histoqu?mico, dois tipos de c?lulas imunorreativas (IR) foram identificadas na mucosa intestinal das esp?cies estudadas, c?lulas produtoras de 5HT e CCK. J? no p?ncreas foram observadas c?lulas imunorreativas (IR) ? insulina, ? glucagon ? somatostatina e colecistocinina. Atrav?s deste estudo, notou-se que houve diferen?a na distribui??o e na frequ?ncia relativa das c?lulas end?crinas no intestino delgado dos animais estudados. Enquanto no p?ncreas foi observado similaridade entre as esp?cies quando comparado ? histologia e a distribui??o das c?lulas end?crinas estudadas.

CAPES Dermanura cinerea é um morcego frugívoro, cujas informações acerca da sua biologia reprodutiva ainda permanecem pouco conhecidas em diferentes biomas do Brasil, sobretudo quando se considera as análises morfométricas e histológicas de suas gônadas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi analisar por meio do estágio reprodutivo, histologia e morfometria o testículo, epidídimo e ovário de D. cinerea, ao longo do ciclo reprodutivo anual, em um fragmento preservado de Mata Atlântica (Reserva Biológica de Saltinho) situado no estado de Pernambuco, Nordeste do Brasil. Fêmeas e machos adultos foram capturados por meio de redes de neblina e as coletas ocorreram mensalmente, durante duas noites consecutivas, ao longo de dezoito meses. Os dados meteorológicos foram agrupados em seis períodos de três meses cada: período I (junho – agosto/2014); período II (setembro – novembro/2014); período III (dezembro/2014 – fevereiro/2015); período IV (março – maio/2015); período V (junho – agosto/2015) e período VI (setembro – novembro/2015). Esse agrupamento foi realizado com base no que se tem descrito para o período seco (setembro - fevereiro) e período chuvoso (março - agosto) nessa área de estudo. Entretanto, alguns meses apresentaram médias de precipitação atípicas entre os períodos, enquanto a temperatura teve pouca variação (24,0 a 27,4). Foram capturados um total de 23 machos e 25 fêmeas. Os testículos dos machos foram classificados de acordo com a morfologia externa em: machos com testículos descendentes e não descendentes. Já as fêmeas foram classificadas em: inativas, grávidas, lactantes e pós-lactantes. Os espécimes utilizados nas análises histomofométricas dos órgãos foram eutanasiados. Nos machos foram selecionados 18 espécimes, ao passo que nas fêmeas foram selecionadas 10 inativas. Os órgãos foram coletados, fixados e processados seguindo a técnica histológica de rotina. As lâminas histológicas produzidas foram coradas por Hematoxilina – Eosina e analisadas em microscópio óptico. Morfometricamente, nos testículos, foram realizadas mensurações da área de ocupação do compartimento tubular e intertubular, número de células de Leydig, de Sertoli, de espermatócitos e de espermátides alongadas. No epidídimo foi mensurada a altura do epitélio, o diâmetro tubular, diâmetro do lúmen e diâmetro do epitélio das regiões do segmento inicial, cabeça, corpo e cauda. No ovário foi mensurada as áreas total e de ocupação dos folículos em diferentes estágios de maturação, incluindo a quantificação destes folículos e corpo lúteo. Esses dados foram submetidos ao teste t de Student. De acordo com os resultados, a atividade testicular de D. cinerea não apresenta um padrão reprodutivo definido; o epidídimo possui maior sensibilidade às variações sazonais na região caudal e as fêmeas apresentam dois picos reprodutivos de acordo com os períodos considerados em área de Mata Atlântica do estado de Pernambuco. Dermanura cinerea is a fruit bat, whose information about their reproductive biology are still little known in different biomes of Brazil, especially when considering the morphological and histological analyzes of their gonads. The aim of this study was to analyze through the reproductive stage, histology and morphometry the testis, epididymis and ovary of D. cinerea, during the annual reproductive cycle in a fragment preserved Atlantic Forest (Biological Reserve Saltinho) located in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Adult females and males were captured through nets and the collections were monthly during two consecutive nights along eighteen months. Meteorological data were grouped into six periods of three months each: period I (June - August / 2014); period II (September - November / 2014); period III (December / 2014 - February / 2015); period IV (March - May / 2015); period V (June - August / 2015) and period VI (September - November / 2015). This grouping was based on what has been described for the dry season (September - February) and rainy season (March - August) in this study area. However, a few months have mean atypical precipitation between the periods while the temperature had little variation (24.0 to 27.4). A total of 23 males and 25 females were captured. The testes of males were classified according to the external morphology: males with descendant testes and not descendant. The females were classified as inactive, pregnant, lactating and post-lactating. Specimens used in histomorphometric analysis of the organs were euthanized. In males were selected 18 specimens, while females were selected in 10 inactive. The bodies were collected, fixed and processed according to routine histological technique. The produced histological slides were stained with hematoxylin - eosin and analyzed by light microscopy. Morphometrically in the testes were performed measurement of the occupation area tubular compartment and Intertubular, number of Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, spermatocytes and spermatids elongated. In the epididymis was measured the height of the epithelium, the tubular diameter, lumen diameter and diameter epithelial of the regions of the initial segment, caput,corpus and cauda. Ovary was measured and the total areas of occupation of follicles at different stages of maturation, including quantification of these follicles and corpus luteum. These data were submitted to Student's t test. According to the results, testicular activity D. cinerea does not present a defined reproduction pattern; the epididymis is more sensitive to seasonal variations in the flow region and the females have two reproductive peaks according to the periods considered in Atlantic Forest area of the state of Pernambuco.

Currently, only about 5% of the original coverage of this biome is preserved and distributed in fragmented habitats involved by urban areas. As one of the groups that have a great potential to be indicators of the habitat destruction levels in many regions of the world, bats has a great importance for the maintenance and restoration of these ecosystems, since they are, among many other functions, excellent seed dispersers. Hence, researches that aim to increase the knowledge about these animals, manly in impacted environments need to be conducted. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of the fragmetation of the Atlantic Forest in the external morphological features of these mammals. Were measured 12 morphometric variables and the weight of 136 individuals of the Atibeus planirostris, collected in Ecological Reserves of Caetés, Tapacurá Ecological and Charles Darwin. The results obtained using univariate and multivariate analyzes indicatedifferences in bat forearm length of A. planirostris between the ecological stations studied, possibly due to resource constraints and other factors that act on the Atlantic forest fragments. A Floresta Atlântica é um dos biomas que mais sofreram impactos ambientais devido à exploração de recursos naturais desde a época do descobrimento do Brasil. Atualmente, somente cerca de 5% da cobertura original deste bioma está preservada, e distribuída em fragmentos de habitats envolvidos pela malha urbana. Como um dos grupos com grande potencial de serem indicadores sobre os níveis de destruição de habitats em muitas regiões do mundo, os morcegos são de grande importância para a manutenção e recuperação de ecossistemas, devido, entre muitas outras funções, serem excelentes dispersores de sementes. O objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar quais os possíveis efeitos que a destruição da Floresta Atlântica vem causando nas caraterísticas morfológicas externas destes mamíferos. Foram mensurados 12 variáveis morfométricas e o peso de 136 indivíduos da espécie Artibeus planirostris, coletados nas Reservas Ecológicas de Caetés e Tapacurá, e o Refugio Ecológico Charles Darwin. Os resultados obtidos através de analises univariada e multivariadas, indicam diferenças no comprimento do antebraço de morcegos da espécie A. planirostris entre as estações ecológicas estudadas, possivelmente devido a limitações de recursos e outros fatores que agem sobre fragmentos de floresta atlântica.

Esse estudo analisou a condição reprodutiva, por meio da histomorfometria, de P. discolor coletados em fragmentos de Mata Atlântica do litoral sul de Pernambuco, durante as estações seca e chuvosa. Os animais são de coleção e foram classificados de acordo com a posição testicular (descendentes e não descendentes). Para as análises histomorfométricas, foram selecionados aleatoriamente 18 espécimes durante as estações seca e chuvosa, dos quais (n = 11) com testículos descendentes e (n = 7) com testículos não descendentes. Os resultados demonstraram que as maiores médias da área de ocupação dos túbulos seminíferos foram na estação chuvosa, independente dos espécimes apresentarem os testículos descendentes ou não. Isso pode estar relacionado a um maior investimento em produção espermática, já que na estação chuvosa, existe uma maior disponibilidade de alimentos devido às precipitações pluviométricas. This study analyzed the reproductive condition, by histomorphometry, of P. discolor collected in forest fragments of the South Coast of Pernambuco during the dry and rainy seasons. The animals are Collection and were classified according to the position testicular (descendants and not descendants). For histomorphometric analysis, 18 were randomly selected specimens during the rainy and dry seasons, being (n = 11) with descendant testicles and (n = 7) with testicles no descendant. The results showed that the highest area average occupancy of the seminiferous tubules were in the rainy season, regardless of the present specimens the testes descendant or not. This may be related to a greater investment in sperm production, since the rainy season, there is a greater availability of food due to rainfall.

As leishmanioses são protozoonoses causadas por diferentes espécies do gênero Leishmania. Pouco se sabe sobre o papel de algumas espécies de mamíferos na epidemiologia dessas doenças. Alguns relatos apontam quirópteros como potenciais hospedeiros. Este estudo visa avaliar a presença de infecção por Leishmania spp. em Desmodus rotundus. Métodos moleculares capazes de identificar fragmentos de DNA de Leishmania foram empregados para as análises dos 100 quirópteros envolvidos neste estudo . Em 16% das amostras foram detectados presença de DNA de Leishmania sp. com a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) convencional. Contudo, tal resultado não se repetiu quando avaliadas pela PCR em Tempo Real, aplicada com finalidade de distinção das espécies de Leishmania, o que sugeriu a ocorrência de contaminação das amostras na análise prévia. Apesar deste resultado, aspectos comportamentais e da biologia do D. rotundus sugerem que eles, assim como outras espécies de quirópteros, sejam potenciais hospedeiros destes protozoários. Leishmaniasis are protozoonosis caused by different Leishmania species. The role of some wild mammal's species in the epidemiology of these diseases is not well known. A few studies point to chiropteran as possible hosts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of Leishmania spp. infection in Desmodus rotundus (vampire bat). Molecular methods capable of amplifying the DNA of Leishmania were used to evaluate one hundred chiropters from this species. In 16% of the samples, the DNA of Leishmania sp. was detected through PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), in the trial stage. However, the result was not repeated when evaluated through Real Time PCR, which suggested the occurrence of prior sample contamination. In spite of this result, some behavioral and biological aspects of D. rotundus suggest that they, in a similar vein to other bat species, are potential hosts for these protozoans.

Chiroptera is the second largest order of mammals, being the only representatives with the ability of flight within this class, hibernate, long live, inhabit every continent except the poles and have diverse eating habits. The populations have a dynamic behavior that changes continuously in time. Thus, the characterization of the population is of great importance for the understanding of the ecological stability, allowing for better understanding of the relationship between the species and habitat. A tool that can be used to infer about population structure is the Body Condition Index, in which the main purpose is to separate the aspects of body mass related to the size and structural aspects which reflect fat and other components of energy reserve an individual to generate information that can assist it in the management, monitoring and knowledge of the species. Already activity patterns present character determinant for the survival and reproduction of a species, that associated with eating habits, can be of great importance to understand how bats manage their resources. Thus, this study aimed to know the population structure and activity pattern of Glossophaga soricina in order to add new information and complement existing in other regions of the country. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Chiroptera é a segunda maior ordem de mamíferos, sendo os únicos representantes com a capacidade de voo dentro desta classe, hibernam, longíveros, habitam todos os continentes, exceto os pólos e possuem diversidade de hábitos alimentares. As populações apresentam um comportamento dinâmico, que se modifica de forma continua no tempo. Assim a caracterização das populações é de grande importância para a compreensão da sua estabilidade ecológica, possibilitando o entendimento da relação entre a espécie e o habitat. Uma ferramenta que pode ser utilizada para inferir sobre a estrutura das populações é o Índice de Condição Corporal, este tem por principal finalidade separar os aspectos da massa corporal relacionados ao tamanho estrutural e os aspectos que refletem a gordura e outros componentes da reserva de energia de um indivíduo para gerar informações que possam auxiliar em trabalhos de gestão, monitoramento e conhecimento das espécies. Já os padrões de atividade apresentam caráter determinante para a sobrevivência e reprodução de uma espécie, isso associado a hábitos alimentares, pode ser de grande relevância para entender como morcegos gerenciam seus recursos. Dessa forma, objetivou-se conhecer a estrutura populacional e padrão de atividade de Glossophaga soricina, a fim de adicionar novas informações e complementar as existentes para outras regiões do país.

It is known that phyllostomid reproductive patterns may have variable, which include: seasonally monstrous, seasonally polyestrous, aseasonally polyestrous and seasonally bimodal polyestry. Thus, the present study evaluated the reproductive patterns and spermatogenic activity and ovarian of bats Artibeus lituratus and Carollia perspicillata in South Mata of Pernambuco. Therefore, animals were collected by mist nets (12X 3 m) from September 2008 to October 2009, between 17:00 and 05:00. The specimens were classified according to the reproductive stage, as: (1) pregnant, (2) lactating, (3) pregnant and lactating, or (4) inactive (5) active if testes were descended, (6) or inactive if testes were not descended. For histological analysis, 10 males were randomly selected adults, (n = 5) and in the rainy season (n = 5) in the dry season and 10 adult females, of which (n = 5) and in the rainy season (n = 5) in the dry season for each species, totaling 40 individuals. Results indicated that both species have a greater proportion of females than males, suggesting that the formation of harems. The reproductive pattern displayed by both species was bimodal polyestry, with a peak in the dry season and another in the rainy season. A. lituratus presented reproductive peaks in the months of March and October and C. perspicillata for the months of March and October-November. The spermatogenesis in testing specimens were descended or tests were not descended and ovarian activity continued throughout the year. Os morcegos apresentam diversos aspectos reprodutivos peculiares que evoluíram a fim de se ajustar as distintas condições ecológicas e ambientais, entretanto permanecem um dos grupos menos conhecidos com relação à biologia reprodutiva, principalmente no Nordeste do Brasil. Sabe-se que os morcegos filostomídeos podem apresentar padrões reprodutivos variáveis, como a monoestria sazonal, poliestria assazonal, poliestria sazonal e poliestria bimodal sazonal. Assim, a presente pesquisa avaliou os padrões reprodutivos e as atividades espermatogênica e ovariana dos morcegos Artibeus lituratus e Carollia perspicillata na Mata Sul de Pernambuco. Para tanto, os animais foram coletados por rede de neblina (12X 3 m) de setembro de 2008 a outubro de 2009, entre as 17:00 e 05:00h. Os espécimes foram classificados de acordo ao estágio reprodutivo, como: (1) fêmeas grávidas; (2) fêmeas lactantes; (3) fêmeas grávidas e lactantes; (4) fêmeas inativas; (5) machos ativos e (6) machos inativos. Para a análise histológica, foram selecionados aleatoriamente 10 machos adultos, sendo (n=5) na estação chuvosa e (n=5) na estação seca e 10 fêmeas adultas, sendo (n=5) na estação chuvosa e (n=5) na estação seca para cada espécie, totalizando 40 indivíduos. Os resultados indicaram que ambas as espécies apresentam uma proporção de fêmeas maior do que os machos, sugerindo que o sistema de acasalamento é do tipo políginico. O padrão reprodutivo apresentado por ambas às espécies foi poliéstrico bimodal, com um pico na estação seca e outro na estação chuvosa, sendo que A. lituratus apresentou picos reprodutivos para os meses de março e outubro e C. perspicillata para os meses de março e outubro-novembro, bem como a espermatogênese em indivíduos com testículos descendentes ou não descentes e atividade ovariana contínua durante todo o ano.

Out of 167 species of Chiroptera reported for Brazil, only three representatives of Desmodontinae (Phyllostomidae) are hematophagous, a unique feature among the known species of bats. This reduced group includes Desmodus rotundus, Diaemus youngi and Diphylla ecaudata, all widely distributed over Central and South America. The first notice about vampire bats appeared in the beginning of the 16th century, in the tenth book of the first “Decade” of Pietro Martire de Anghiera (1511), related to the exploration of the continent. For Brazil, the oldest citation of blood-sucking bats was due to Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca (1555). Exceedingly abundant, those bats attacked human beings and caused serious damage to herds, being extremely difficult to control due to the scarce means available during colonial times. Among those, special mention should be made to the “gatos morcegueiros” (literally “bat-hunting cats”), individuals of Felis catus used to catch vampire bats in houses and corrals. Mentioned at least since the first half of the 18th century, those cats were included in property valuations and reached the price of several heads of cattle. Even nowadays, domestic cats are efficient predators of hematophagous bats in rural areas of Brazil and Argentina. Judging from historical records, the problems now caused by bloodsucking bats should not be regarded as one of the consequences of an omnipresent “ecological unbalance”, caused by a shortage of natural hosts and/or the loss of natural habitats. A highly plastic and opportunistic species such as Desmodus rotundus became adapted with extreme efficiency to the new environment, predominantly modeled by the expansion of cattle breeding, the progressive confinement of the herds, and the construction of buildings affording shelter for the bats. These are factors that would have promoted the explosive growth of an already substantially large original population of bats, to the point of converting it into an authentic pest.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Testicular morphometric analysis have been implemented in order to infer on the gonadal dynamics and reproductive capacity of the insectivorous bat Molossus molossus in the southeast of Minas Gerais, Brazil, collected during the four annual climatic seasons, from 2007 to 2008. After euthanasia animal tissues were collected and included in methacrylate, and histological preparations were evaluated in light microscopy. The ratio between the elements that constitute the testicular parenchyma was obtained using the software Image Pro Plus. So various gonadal parameters were calculated. The percentage of testicular parenchyma occupied by seminiferous tubules was significantly higher in fall and winter for the summer, reflecting directly on the percentage occupied by intertubular compartment, which in turn was higher in the summer for the fall and winter. The tubulosomatic index was lower in summer, as well as the percentage of the tubular compartment occupied by lumen and tunica propria, and the tubular diameter, which was lower in this station for the fall and winter and highest in the fall for the spring. The percentage of testes represented by the intertubular compartment was higher in the summer, as the percentage occupied by Leydig cells (LC) for fall and winter. The percentage of LC represented by the nucleus was greater in winter, while the percentage of cytoplasm was lower in this season. There was greater volume cytoplasmatic and of LC from the spring, with higher values in the fall. Analysis of correlation between the testicular morphometry and abiotic environmental factors confirmed the influence of climatic factors on the reproduction of males M. molossus. The increase of various tubular morphometric parameters observed in the fall, as well as the diameter of the seminiferous tubules, indicating increased of spermatogenic activity in this season. The greater investment in intertubular tissue and LC in the summer and the increase in cytoplasmatic and total of LC volume in the fall indicate greater androgenic capacity in those seasons. Although elongated spermatids were present in the testicular lumen, as well as spermatozoa in the epididymis throughout the year, we concluded that male M. molossus presents reproductive seasonality with high spermatogenic capacity in the fall and peaks of androgenic capacity in the summer and fall, tubular length far above the average of all mammals already studied, one of the largest proportions of seminiferous tubules, and testicular pattern characteristic of most mammals. Foram aplicadas análises morfométricas testiculares a fim de inferir sobre a dinâmica gonadal e capacidade reprodutiva do morcego insetívoro Molossus molossus no sudeste de Minas Gerais, Brasil, capturados ao longo das quatro estações climáticas anuais, de 2007 a 2008. Após eutanásia dos animais os tecidos foram coletados e preparações histológicas incluídas em metacrilato foram avaliadas sob microscopia de luz. Foi obtida a proporção entre os elementos que constituem o parênquima testicular utilizando-se o software Image Pro Plus. A partir de então diversos parâmetros gonadais foram calculados. O percentual do parênquima testicular ocupado pelos túbulos seminíferos foi significativamente maior no outono e inverno em relação ao verão, refletindo diretamente no percentual ocupado pelo intertúbulo, que por sua vez foi maior no verão em relação ao outono e inverno. O índice tubulossomático foi menor no verão, assim como os percentuais do compartimento tubular ocupados por lúmen e túnica própria, e o diâmetro tubular, que foi menor nesta estação em relação ao outono e inverno e maior no outono em relação à primavera. O percentual dos testículos representado pelo intertúbulo foi maior no verão, assim como o percentual ocupado por células de Leydig (CL) em relação ao outono e inverno. O percentual das CL representado pelo núcleo foi maior no inverno, enquanto o percentual de citoplasma foi menor nesta estação. Observou- se maiores volumes citoplasmáticos e de CL à partir da primavera, com maiores valores no outono. Análises de correlação realizadas entre a morfometria testicular e fatores abióticos ambientais confirmaram a influência de fatores climáticos sobre a reprodução de M. molossus machos. O aumento de parâmetros morfométricos tubulares observado no outono, como o diâmetro dos túbulos seminíferos, indica maior atividade espermatogênica nesta estação. O maior investimento em tecido intertubular e em CL no verão e o aumento nos volumes citoplasmático e total de CL no outono indicam maior capacidade androgênica nestas estações. Embora espermátides alongadas estivessem presentes no lúmen testicular, assim como espermatozóides no epidídimo durante todo o ano, conclui-se que M. molossus machos apresentam sazonalidade reprodutiva com alta capacidade espermatogênica no outono e picos de atividade androgênica no verão e outono, comprimento tubular muito acima da média de todos os mamíferos já estudados, uma das maiores proporções de túbulos seminíferos, e padrão testicular característico da maioria dos mamíferos.

Entre os anos de 1999 e 2001, realizaram-se 18 capturas de morcegos em Belo Horizonte, sendo uma na estação seca e uma na estação chuvosa em cada regional administrativa. Foram capturados 316 exemplares, com predominância de Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818), 55,1%, Platyrrhinus lineatus (Geoffroy, 1810), 24,4% e Glossophaga soricina (Pallas, 1766), 10,1%, além de Sturnira lilium (Geoffroy, 1810), Phyllostomus discolor (Wagner, 1843), Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758), Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) e Anoura caudifer (Geoffroy, 1818), totalizando oito espécies, pertencentes às famílias Phyllostomidae e Vespertilionidae. Observou-se concentração de partos próximos à estação chuvosa, coincidindo com a maior disponibilidade de alimento para os períodos de prenhez e lactação. Partos esporádicos ocorreram durante todo o ano. Entre 2002 e 2003, foi feita uma busca em diversos tipos de abrigos nas mesmas regionais. Os abrigos foram registrados, e as espécies encontradas foram somadas às já observadas na primeira parte deste estudo, bem como às citadas em diversas fontes bibliográficas e disponíveis em coleções acadêmicas, gerando um relato atualizado das espécies de morcegos já encontrados no município. A total of 316 bats were trapped using mist nets during 18 nights at nine strategic locations in Belo Horizonte between 1999 and 2001. The most predominant species were Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818), 55.1%, Platyrrhinus lineatus (Geoffroy, 1810), 24.4%, and Glossophaga soricina (Pallas, 1766), 10.1%. Other trapped species were: Sturnira lilium (Geoffroy, 1810), Phyllostomus discolor (Wagner, 1843), Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758), Myotis nigricans (Schinz, 1821) and Anoura caudifer (Geoffroy, 1818), resulting in a total of eight species belonging the families Phyllostomidae and Vespertilionidae. All species bred predominantly during the wet season, probably because of the need for food availability to support energetic demands during pregnancy and lactation. However, all species bred at other times of the year as well. An updated list of bat species found in Belo Horizonte was prepared which included those observed in the first part of this study, those cited in scientific papers and academic collections and those recorded in additional observations during 2002 and 2003.

We captured bats using the traditional ground-level mist netting and, occasionally, high nets placed 3 m above the ground, and hand nets for hoosting bats. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2003-04-01 The pariparoba (Piper cernuum Vell.), a native plant from the Atlantic Tropical Forest (ATF), has been commonly used in folk medicine. Works seeking the exploitation of P. cernuum natural populations need to be accomplished, seeking compatibility in obtaining income rates and preservation of ATF. The present work aimed to study the reproductive phenology and seed dispersal in P. cernuum natural population in the counties of Sete Barras/SP (Parque Estadual Intervales - PEI). The population of P. cernuum studied in PEI presented continuously bud-inflorescences, green-infrutescences and bud-inflorescence emission, with variation among individuals. Fruit-set average was of 9.1%, varying among individuals. Shading and foliar damage presented negative effect on the fruit-set. Three species of bats were identified as potential dispersors of the P. cernuum seeds: Carollia perspicillata, Anoura geoffroyi and Artibeus sp. The foragement strategy observed was the withdrawal of some seeds per infrutescence per flight. This strategy increases the potential in establishing new plants as well as in increase the potential of gene flow in comparison with the entire infrutescence plant eaten at the night perches. In consequence, the results of reproductive phenology and seed dispersal ecology presented in this work can help to establish management and conservation strategies of P. cernuum natural populations in the ATF. A new species of Strebla Wiedemann, 1824 (Diptera, Streblidae, Streblinae) on Anoura caudifer (E. Geoffroy, 1818) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae, Glossophaginae). A new species of Strebla Wiedemann, S. carvalhoi sp. nov., collected, on Anoura caudifer (E. Geoffroy, 1818) from Southern of Brazil, is described. Drawings of the postvertex, occipital plates, gonopods and tergite VII are provided.
