Several efforts have been directed towards a better understanding of breast tumors, aiming to obtain a therapeutic success and an increased survival of patients, which includes the determination of biomarkers. Previous studies indicate that the anti-inflammatory protein annexin A1 (ANXA1) acts in different signaling pathways in cancer, associated to the regulation of apoptosis, migration and invasion of cancer cells. Thus, it is important to perform studies to understand the role of ANXA1 in canine mammary neoplasia. For this purpose, 37 dog mammary tissue samples were collected, histopathologically classified and submmited to immunohistochemistry with anti-ANXA1. The results showed a decrease in the expression of ANXA1 associated to a worse prognosis of the tumor, corroborating to previous findings in human breast cancer. This study suggests that ANXA1 is functionally involved in the progression of canine mammary tumors, and may play a role as an additional biomarker in determining the prognosis of these tumors.
