The objective was to validate the "Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs) - Attitude Scale" for the Portuguese university population, allowing the evaluation of the attitude of young people to oral emergency contraception (OEC). Translation, adaptation, and validation of the same for the Portuguese population. A study was carried out using a sample of 457 university students, and their psychometric characteristics were evaluated by developing studies of reliability and validity. The sample consisted mostly of female youth (61.71%), with a mean age of 21.14 years. After performing the psychometric studies, it was possible to obtain values of Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.820, for the Scale of Attitudes towards the use of Emergency Oral Contraception (EACOE) and for factor 1 (Fear of misuse) - 0.83; Factor 2 (Easy Access) - 0.826 and Factor 3 (Health Concerns) - 0.691. The scale was adequate and easy to use to assess young people's attitudes about EOC, which is fundamental to the perception of young people's predisposition to their use, which may prove to be harmful to the adoption of protective behaviors within the scope of the experience of their sexuality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of musical notes D, F, and A in young adults. The study included 20 men and 20 women, aged 18 to 29 years, healthy, non-musicians, and non-users of drugs or other toxic substances. Participants did a two-alternative forced choice discrimination test of musical notes, in which they were asked to select the stimulus that was previously presented. The frequency of correct discrimination of the musical notes was compared between both sexes. Statistically significant differences in the musical note F were found. Men had a higher number of hits than women. These results suggest differences in the perception of musical notes by women and men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study intended to investigate the perception of young adults about loving relationships in the current society. For this research, was made a semi-structured interview with eight young people of both sexes, aged between 18 and 23 years, and the data were analyzed in terms of content. As a result, young people showed that the current relationships are based on individuality, freedom, disposability, search for romance, gender equality and superficiality. What they look for in a relationship: trust, respect, beauty, and someone with a good future career . Young people also believe that the fear of responsibility and constant investment in a relationship may difficult the relationship. Thus, the future of relations would be based on greater individualism among partners and couples living in separate houses. Through this survey, it was found that relationships today are based on freedom and individuality, occurring when there is the investment of both parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationships established within the family are extremely important in the development of individual personality traits. The goal of this study was to investigate the relation between the development of perfectionism and attachment representations in a sample of 690 young adults, aged between 17 and 30 years old. Participants completed two scales of Self-report Measure of Perfectionism (H-MPS and F-MPS) and the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), as well as a Social-Demographic Questionnaire. Results indicate the existence of a relation between maladaptive perfectionism dimensions and an insecure attachment representation to parents, whereas adaptive perfectionism dimensions seem to be related to a secure attachment representation. The results suggest that one of the contributing factors to the development of perfectionism is the nature of parental relationships and their consequent interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes a study of existing relations between friendship characteristics of young adults and their coping resources and strategies. The participants of this study were 98 young adults, aged 18 to 30 years (M=23.01; SD=6.57), 45.9% man. The sampling was based on the Respondent Driven Sampling technique. A self-assessment questionnaire composed of socio-demographics and three self-report scales (concerning friendship relationships, coping strategies and social support perception) were administered. Confrontive and positive reappraisal coping were positively correlated with friendships toward female friends. Self-controlling was correlated positively with male friends. Friendship qualities showed a positive correlation with perceived social support. The higher the quality of the friendships, the more friends are able to provide coping resources. During the last decades major social changes have introduced some special features into the transition to adulthood. On one hand the transition to adulthood tends to occur in later ages. On the other hand it involves a set of particular specificities that allows it to be considered as a developmental phase - emerging adulthood. This paper explores how social constrains act in the transition to adulthood, taking into account the international and national context. Objective: Although the relationship between epidemiology and anthropology has a long history, it has generally been comprised of the integration of quantitative and qualitative methods. Only recently have the two fields begun to converge along theoretical lines, leading to a growing mutual interest in explaining rather than simply describing phenomena. This paper aimed to illustrate how ethnographic analyses can be used to assist with the in-depth and theoretically-imbued interpretation of epidemiological results., Methods: The anthropological analysis presented in this paper used ethnographic data collected as part of the ongoing 1982 birth cohort study, between 1997 and 2007 in Pelotas, Southern Brazil. Analyses were framed according to the results presented in two of the epidemiological articles published in this series on the determinants of mental morbidity and age of sexual initiation., Results and Conclusions: The ethnographic results show that statistical associations consist of multiple pathways of influence and causality that generally correspond to the unique experiences of specific subgroups. In exploring these pathways, the paper highlights the importance of an additional set of mediating factors that account for epidemiological results; these include the awareness and experience of inequities, the role of violence in everyday life, traumatic life events, increasing social isolation and emotional introversion as a response to life's difficulties, and differing approaches towards socio-psychological maturation. Theoretical and methodological collaboration between anthropology and epidemiology is important for public health, as it has positively modified both fields.
