Objective. Basic and translational research in pediatric cancer are essential to improve patient care. To critically assess the developments achieved in these areas in Latin America, we systematically reviewed information published between 2013 and 2023. Methods. Studies of basic and translational research performed by investigators in Latin America evaluating pediatric malignant solid and central nervous system tumors were retrieved from PubMed. Original articles published in English between 2013 and 2023 were included. Collaborations among Latin American authors or among Latin American authors working with researchers from other continents were also included. Studies were excluded if they focused only on adults or on basic research in tumor biology not specifically related to the tumor types analyzed in this review. Results. A total of 550 articles were retrieved, but after removal of duplicates, 514 articles were included in the analysis, the majority of which were authored by researchers affiliated with institutions in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. These countries also had the highest number of collaborations on original articles published with authors from Europe and North America. Argentina had the highest number of collaborations on original publications, with coauthors from Brazil and Uruguay. The median impact factor of the 244 journals in which articles were published was 3.5. The most commonly studied tumors were osteosarcomas, neuroblastomas and medulloblastomas; the most commonly studied areas were molecular analysis, tumor cell biology and biomarkers. Conclusions. In Latin America, research in pediatric oncology is on the agenda, despite a notable disparity in publication rates and frequency of collaboration between countries. There is a need to strengthen scientific collaboration within Latin America and with countries from other continents to promote research and to develop novel treatment strategies that reflect the local needs of children in Latin America who have solid tumors and brain cancer.

Purpose: To evaluate the usability and satisfaction of users with the interface of the 'Agente Escuta' application, in addition to identifying problems and possibilities for improvement., Methods: Descriptive exploratory translational study, characterized by a usability test with a quantitative and qualitative approach, subdivided into three stages: (I) prior evaluation of usability by 10 judges, including students, primary care professionals, professors and researchers in Information Technology and Speech Therapy; (II) evaluation of the application by the target audience, that is, community health agents from six municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte; (III) evaluation of the satisfaction of the agents who used the application in their work routine. The System Usability Scale and the Net Promoter Score were used, in addition to a qualitative evaluation of the opinions., Results: Usability was rated as excellent by judges, regardless of category. In the evaluation by community health agents, usability was considered good and there was no effect of the city of origin. It was found that the perception of the judges and the target audience were different, with a lower score for the participants in the second stage. However, most would give positive publicity to the product. The heuristic with the highest score was ease of memorization and participants in the third stage were interested in continuing to use the tool in practice, even after the end of the study., Conclusion: The Agente Escuta prototype showed good usability and satisfaction and aspects that could be improved in future solutions were identified.

Objective: To explore the perception of health care professionals about barriers and facilitators, and coping strategies for the implementation of the Thirst Management Model in the preoperative period of the burned patient., Method: This is a qualitative study, anchored in the conceptual framework Knowledge Translation. The focus group technique was chosen for data collection, composed by eight key professionals, to identify barriers and facilitators in evidence implementation and to point out coping strategies for the critical nodes found. Thematic Content Analysis technique was used to evaluate the data., Results: Five categories emerged: Physical structure, environment and supplies; Particularities of the burned patient; Human Resources; Team attitude; Team training and education. Coping strategies were raised for each barrier identified., Conclusion: The main barriers identified were found in the Human Resources and Team Attitude categories. The main facilitators were Particularities of the burned patient and Team training and education. The identification allowed planning coping strategies for critical nodes, providing support for scientific evidence in clinical practice.

The term knowledge translation has been used to describe the process of applying research results to the real world, in order to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care and services. The aim of this article is to discuss the incorporation of knowledge translation in the Brazilian public health. The article addresses the basic activities of knowledge translation and lists challenges and perspectives in Brazilian scenario. Brazil began to move towards understanding the process of translating scientific knowledge into practice. Investing in pilot studies to adapt the so-called effective interventions to the Brazilian scenario may be an alternative. Increasing the qualification of Brazilian researchers in the design and evaluation of implementation studies is relevant to improve this field in the country.

Objectives: to translate, adapt and validate the PIV Infiltration Scale content into Brazilian Portuguese., Methods: a methodological study. Initial translation was performed by two bilingual translators, translation synthesis; backtranslation to the original language; elaboration of the translated version and adapted by expert consensus; content validation and pretest., Results: the Pediatric PIV Infiltration Scale has been translated and adapted. Discrepancies were sorted out by consensus. The scale content was validated by nine experts, reaching a global content validity index of 0.95. Pretest was performed by applying the scale to 33 intravenous device insertion sites of 17 newborns and 16 children. The predominant infiltration grades were 2 and 3., Conclusions: the Pediatric PIV Infiltration Scale's translated version achieved equivalence to Brazilian Portuguese and was validated by experts.

Objective: This paper provides a theoretical-reflective study of knowledge translation concepts and their implementation processes for using research evidence in policy and practice., Results: The process of translating research into practice is iterative and dynamic, with fluid boundaries between knowledge creation and action development. Knowledge translation focuses on co-creating knowledge with stakeholders and sharing that knowledge to ensure uptake of relevant research to facilitate informed decisions and changes in policy, practice, and health services delivery. In Brazil, many challenges exist in implementing knowledge translation: lack of awareness, lack of partnerships between researchers and knowledge-users, and low research budgets., Conclusions: An emphasis on knowledge translation has the potential to positively impact health outcomes. Future research in Brazil is needed to study approaches to improve the uptake of research results in the Brazilian context.

This study investigates the practices involved in the production of knowledge about menopause at Caism, Unicamp, a reference center for public policies for women's health. Gynecological appointments and psychological support meetings were observed, and women and doctors were interviewed in order to identify what discourse circulates there and how different actors are brought in to ensure that the knowledge produced attains credibility and "travels" beyond the boundaries of the teaching hospital to become "universal". The analysis is based on localized studies aligned with social studies of science and technology.

Maternal diabetes constitutes an unfavorable environment for fetal-placental and embryonic development. It is has important repercussion in modern obstetrics, since it is associated to an increased risk of neonatal and maternal morbidity, and it still is a significant medical challenge. The increased occurrence of diabetes worldwide, the increase in diabetes type 2 in women at reproductive age and the crossed generation of intrauterine programming for diabetes type 2 are the bases for the growing interest in utilization of diabetic experimental samples, with the aim to acquire knowledge about the mechanisms that induce development alterations in gestational diabetes. Several studies have shown the benefits of diabetes prevention, with interventions in lifestyle, metabolic improvement and control of cardiovascular risk factors to substantially prevent the complications of this devastating disease. Despite these findings, the recent revolution in the scientific knowledge, and the infinite number of new therapies for diabetes, there is still a large gap between what was learned through research and what is really done in public, clinical and community health. The negative economic impact of this complacency in people, families, and national economies is alarming. It is expected that translational research in the binomial diabetes and pregnancy are implemented in centers of excellence, in both basic and applied research, and complemented by multicenter clinical studies, conducted in a pragmatic way to increase the level of scientific evidence with more reliable diagnostic and propaedeutic resources.

Sleep deprivation is a condition that is more and more observed in modern society bringing various neurobehavioral effects, being anxious states one of the main problems. Many studies have successfully demonstrated the relationship between sleep deprivation and anxiety in clinical research. As to basic experimentation, various models have been efficiently used in order to evaluate an anxious behavior. However, the same efficacy is not found on basic studies that deal with the relationship between paradoxical sleep and anxiety. The great majority of studies which approach this matter in animal models do not present results that may be applied to clinical practice and this is basically due to two reasons: inconsistency among results and lack of replicability as related to clinical studies. It has to be emphasized that the use of animal models is extremely useful, mainly under experimental conditions which cannot be ethically or plausibly be approached in human beings. So, the present theoretical assay tries to evaluate in a brief and critical manner the applicability of animal models in sleep deprivation under a translational perspective.
