Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide, due to a higher frequency of unhealthy lifestyles. Omega-3 (w-3) has antiinflammatory action and may be effective in the prevention and treatment of DM2, therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the evidence of the effect of w-3 supplementation in individuals with DM2. Materials and Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted on the role of w-3 supplementation in individuals with DM2. The Pubmed and Bireme databases were searched using the descriptors "type 2, Diabetes Mellitus" and "acids, omega-3 fatty". The study included randomized clinical trials available in full, published in the last five years, which addressed the effects of oral omega-3 supplementation in individuals with DM2. One hundred articles were found and eight articles were selected and analyzed. Results: Supplementation of w-3 in subjects with DM2 resulted in decreased serum triglycerides, atherogenic index, IL-6, MCP-1, leptin, HOMAIR, increased PPAR-γ activity and HDL-c. The parameters of blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, insulin, LDL-c, antioxidant status were controversial. Conclusion: The supplementation of w-3 in individuals with DM2, has a hypotriglyceridemic action, reduces the atherogenic index and inflammatory cytokines, improving insulin resistance, the lipid profile and inflammation of individuals, while the effects on blood glucose are still controversial. Background: Lipoprotein cholesterol measurements fluctuated across the menstrual cycle, corresponding to rising and declining concentrations of gonadotropins and ovarian steroid hormones levels in young women, whereas premenopausal women and those who inside the menopausal transition characterized by a poor ovarian response to high secretion of gonadotropin leading to low levels of ovarian steroids. Aims: To investigate the lipoprotein cholesterol changes and their interactions with sex steroid hormones during different phases of the menstrual cycle in menstruated young and old (premenopausal) women. Methods: The sample included thirty healthy women (aged 20-45 years) divided into two groups with 15 women /group according to their ages (20-25 years) (40-45 years). Blood samples were collected on the 8th, 16th, and 24th days of the menstrual cycle from both young and old menstruating women to compare the previous parameters between these days for each group and compare these parameters between similar days for the first and second groups. Lipid profile (Total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), High density lipoprotein (HDL), Low density lipoprotein (LDL), and Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) changes be assayed by Bio-Systems Kit components. Statistical analysis was carried out using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan's test, and t-tests were used to assess differences between groups. Results: TC and TG levels did not significantly increase on the 8th day of the menstrual cycle, which represents the follicular phase, in comparison with the other days (16th and 24th days). However, LDL level increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) on the 8th day compared to the other days. On the other hand, HDL and VLDL levels increased on the 16th day of the menstrual cycle, which represents the ovulatory phase. Discussion: TC, TG, and LDL levels increased during the follicular phase and were accompanied by high levels of FSH and estradiol, leading to a favorable lipid profile, whereas FSH and estradiol are considered regulators of cholesterol biosynthesis and a buffering capacity. HDL and VLDL levels rise during ovulation to meet the requirements of ovulation and ensure successful ovulation. Conclusions: Studying and evaluating changes in the lipid profile according to the menstrual cycle phase of the menstrual cycle represents an important issue in knowing the physiological and healthy woman state and preventing cardiovascular disease incidence. The specialized herds of the high tropics of Nariño are characterized by semi-intensive breeding models, that is, feeding based on grazing and supplementation. The objective was to analyze the milk production of grazing Holstein cows under conditions of the high tropics, taking into account the energetic and protein metabolites, and their relationship with the dry matter intake (CMS/Kg/d), the body condition (BC), and the reproductive variables. Three periods of lactation were evaluated, thus, between 4-10 days (P1), 45-55 days (P2), and between 185-200 days (P3). The investigation was carried out in four dairy production farms. The forage supply consisted of a mixture of Lolium hybridum, Cenchrus clandestinus Hoschst ex Chiov, Holcus lanatus and Trifolium repens, plus commercial concentrate. A total of 24 Holstein animals (six per productive system) from three births onwards were used, from which blood samples were obtained to determine: non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, total protein (PT), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The results showed that milk production during P1 is influenced by CC and body weight (Kg) by +0.04 liters of milk per unit of change in this variable. In P2, the positive incidence variables were PT, BUN, glucose, NEFA, BHB, triglycerides, and cholesterol, and in P3, the increase in CMS made it possible to show that as lactation progresses in more than 180 days, the animals substantially improve their body condition; likewise the NEFA and BHB indicators are related to a better reproductive response.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effectiveness of the essential oil of Hesperozygisringens (EOHR) for anesthesia of Colossomamacropomum by documenting hematological and blood biochemical responses after biometric handling. In Experiment 1, juveniles (14.12 ± 3.53 g) were exposed to different concentrations of EOHR: 0 (control), 75, 150, 300 and 450 µL L-1 (n=10 fish for each concentration), to determine times for induction and recovery from anesthesia, as well as its effects on ventilatory frequency (VF). Based on these results, Experiment 2 evaluated the effects of 0 (control), 75 (with induction and recovery times outside that recommended for fish anesthesia) and 150 µL L-1 EOHR (within recommended times) on hematological and biochemical variables of juveniles (20.52 ± 3.47 g) after anesthesia and after 24 h of recovery (n = 6 fish for each concentration and collection time). Survival was 100%. Induction time showed a quadratic effect of EOHR concentration. Recovery time did not differ among EOHR concentrations. Concentrations between 150 and 450 µL L-1 EOHR caused rapid induction (< 3 min) and recovery (< 5 min). EOHR concentration affected VF. The concentration of 150 µL L-1 EOHR had little influence on hematological and biochemical parameters of C. macropomum of 20 g.

Evidence suggests that inadequate dietary patterns and sedentary lifestyle during adolescence may lead to excessive weight gain, which is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The triglyceride/HDLcholesterol ratio seems to a be a strong predictor of atherosclerotic disease allowing a rapid metabolic screening of individuals in different age groups. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the triglyceride/HDLcholesterol ratio of adolescents enrolled in public schools of Recife/Pernambuco and investigate its relationships with abdominal obesity and other anthropometric parameters. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study with 674 adolescents who participated of the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA) in the city of Recife-Pernambuco. We obtained body mass index by age, waist/height ratio (=0,5) and waist circumference (P90). The triglyceride/HDL-cholesterol ratio was classified according to the 50th percentile of the distribution. Results: The final sample was representative for approximately 59,000 adolescents, where 50.4% of the individuals evaluated were male and 27.6% were overweight according to body mass index by age. Obese adolescents had 3.62-fold higher chances of presenting triglyceride/HDLcholesterol ratio above the median. Conclusion: Obesity contributed with greater chances for high values of the triglyceride/HDL-cholesterol ratio. The results of this research can contribute to the development of strategies aimed at promoting and protecting cardiovascular health in adolescents, in order to encourage changes in lifestyle and early adoption of healthier eating habits. Introduction: Liposuction associated with dermolipectomies is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in plastic surgery. Although regarded as an extremely safe surgery, some considerations must be taken on the possible metabolic effects of these surgeries. The development of the tumescent technique in liposuction allowed the safer removal of large amounts of fat. The objective is to compare lipid profile variations in the early and late postoperative period in patients undergoing liposuction and dermolipectomies. Methods: Between October 2006 and June 2012, 40 female patients who were candidates for surgeries involving liposuction and dermolipectomies were prospectively followed, and the lipid profile was analyzed through preoperative and postoperative examinations. The surgeries performed were mammoplasty + liposuction, abdominoplasty + liposuction, and lipoabdominoplasty + mammoplasty. Results: Of the 40 female patients who were followed, 20 were selected (after applying the exclusion criteria). In agreement with our study, in 1996, Cazes showed that there were no changes in the lipid profile of patients 12 months after lipoabdominoplasty. Conclusion: After a preoperative and postoperative analysis of 20 patients, it was observed that there were no statistically significant changes in the lipid profile and that the measurements after 1 year were close to those obtained in the preoperative period.

CHRONIC kidney failure , *NON-communicable diseases , *DISEASE risk factors , *EPIDEMIOLOGICAL transition , *CARDIOVASCULAR diseases , *LIPIDS , *TRIGLYCERIDES , *CHOLESTEROL - Abstract
Introduction: The current demographic and epidemiological transition in Brazil, reflected in the aging population, has a higher prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases (CD), neoplasms, metabolic disorders, chronic respiratory diseases, and chronic renal failure (CRF). These diseases may be due to modifiable risk factors, such as dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, anemia, physical inactivity, stress, obesity, and alcoholism. Chronic renal failure occurs due to the slow, progressive, and irreversible loss of renal function, and cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality caused by atheroma resulting from dyslipidemia. Objectives: Based on dyslipidemia as a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and on the susceptibility of its development by chronic renal patients, the objective of this study was to analyze whether the hemodialysis treatment and the medical monitoring is efficient to minimize or avoid dyslipidemia in these patients. Methodology: This is a longitudinal descriptive study carried out through an analysis of laboratory data of tests related to the lipid profile: Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and Triglycerides from November 2018 to June 2019. Results: Twenty patients were followed up and had their data analyzed, 50% were aged between 60 and 69 years old and had a previous underlying disease, such as arterial hypertension (45%), hypertension associated with diabetes (25.0%), and isolated diabetes (10.0%). The analysis of the presence of dyslipidemia showed the laboratory tests that had the most changes were HDL with a result under the desirable (<40.0mg / dl) and triglycerides with results considered above normal (> 150.0 mg / dl) with risk for DC. Only 1 female subject (5.0%) presented all the results of the lipid profile altered throughout the study, even using the statin drug, while the majority (95%) of the patients had desirable results. The analysis of all the results of the lipid profile showed that only one male subject presented changes in the entire study period with undesirable triglycerides and HDL, while in the female sex, patient number 14 presented changes in all tests throughout the analysis period, with Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol with undesirable values above normal and undesirable HDL-cholesterol with values under the desirable. The triglycerides test showed the most alteration with undesirable results in 11 (55.0%) subjects, mainly female, with subsequent LDL above normal and reduced HDL, considered an important cardiovascular risk factor due to the formation of atheromas. Conclusion: For patients with CRF, medical follow-up and the hemodialysis treatment performed by the Brazilian Health System is extremely important. This study demonstrated it is as an effective method for the control and prevention of dyslipidemias, minimizing the risk for cardiovascular diseases in this vulnerable population. ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the relationships that smoking history has with inflammatory markers, metabolic markers, body composition, muscle strength, and cardiopulmonary capacity in current smokers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 65 smokers (age range: 18-60 years). On three non-consecutive days, each participant was evaluated in terms of smoking history, pre-existing comorbidities, lung function (by spirometry), peripheral muscle strength (by dynamometry), body composition (by bioelectrical impedance analysis), levels of metabolic/inflammatory markers, and maximum cardiopulmonary capacity (by treadmill exercise test). We evaluated the relationships that smoking history has with inflammatory markers, metabolic markers, body composition, muscle strength, and cardiopulmonary capacity, using logarithmic transformation of the data and calculating Pearson’s correlation coefficient and for partial correlations adjusted for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and comorbidities. To identify the influence of smoking history on pre-existing comorbidities, we used a logistic regression model adjusted for age, BMI, and duration of smoking. Results: Smoking history correlated significantly, albeit weakly, with triglyceride level (r = 0.317; p = 0.005), monocyte count (r = 0.308; p = 0.013), and waist circumference (r = 0.299; p = 0.017). However, those correlations did not retain their significance in the adjusted analysis. In the logistic regression model, smoking more than 20 cigarettes/day correlated significantly with the presence of metabolic diseases (OR = 0.31; 95% CI: 1.009-1.701; p = 0.043). Conclusions: In this sample of smokers, smoking history correlated positively with the triglyceride level, the monocyte count, and waist circumference. The prevalence of metabolic disease was highest in those who smoked more than 20 cigarettes/day.

This study investigated the existence of difference of fat deposition and lipid metabolism in horses with different races and skills that were used for the same kind of sport. 20 Purebred Arabian and 20 Thoroughbred horses trained for flat race were evaluated. The analyses performed were body condition score, weight and blood collected for determination of triglycerides, total cholesterol and non-esterified fatty acids. Ultrasonography of the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer was performed on the Longissimus dorsi muscle between the 17th and 18th rib, the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer on the Gluteus medius muscle using the acetabulum as reference, and the cross section of the same muscle. Race-trained Arabian horses showed greater fat layer deposition in the Gluteus medius and Longissimus dorsei muscles than Thoroughbred horses. These facts indicate that there is a metabolic difference, besides the phenotype, between the races. They also indicate the need to study specific physical conditioning programs for each kind of race.

Overweight is the imbalance between caloric intake and energy expenditure, with obesity being the most serious case, and in the last decades, it has become one of the major health problems, since it is associated with chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and other pathologies. The objective of this study was to characterize the occurrence of excess weight and the associated factors among patients attended at the nutrition clinic of a university hospital. This is a descriptive field study with an exploratory and crosssectional character, with samples collected through the medical records of the patients attending the nutrition clinic of the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital of Belém (PA), for a year, from April 2018 to April 2019. During this period, 87 patients were selected who met the inclusion criteria, of both sexes, of which the women were the majority (65.52%), with a mean age of 49.4±10.8 years. About 82.76% were overweight, compared to laboratory tests, 70.11% had high blood glucose levels, 57.47% had high total cholesterol, only 50.57% had high triglycerides, 59.77% had low HDL and 43.68% had high LDL, there was a slight positive correlation between glycemia and triglyceridemia and a slight negative correlation between triglyceridemia and HDL-cholesterol. It was concluded that overweight was significantly frequent in the sample studied, and hyperglycemia was the most prevalent biochemical alteration in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Liposuction is one of the most frequently performed procedures by plastic surgeons. The increased safety associated with the surgical settings, technical refinements, and level of patient satisfaction have contributed to the popularity gained by this intervention since it was first introduced by Ilouz in 1979 (4). Moreover, among medical communities and the media, concerns have risen regarding not only the drastic changes in patients’ appearance but also the safety of the procedure. Fat tissue is known to act as a legitimate endocrine organ (5), being the primary depository for triglycerides, which classically relate to atherosclerosis and insulin resistance (6, 7). Recent work has linked lipid metabolism in adipocytes to the maintenance of low levels of systemic inflammation through a series of mediators (8-10). Scientific evidence (11) revealed an increase in the percentage of obese people in our country, as well as a considerable proportion of overweight people. This study also investigates the relationship between the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. The classic association between body mass index and common metabolic diseases has led to investigations focused on several factors involved in this relationship, along with research work directed at the treatments available. The discovery of leptin in the 1990s (12) highlights the regulatory properties of the adipose tissue, whereas recent studies (5, 13) have established a link with the synthesis of other factors. In this study, we aimed to perform a review of literatures that discuss the current state-ofthe-art of scientific research, in which we organized published works in a didactic manner in order to facilitate better understanding, and promote the safety and efficacy of liposuction.

▪ ABSTRACT Introduction: Liposuction associated with dermolipectomies is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in plastic surgery.

Aim: To systematize the offering of foods which were highly palatable and rich in calories and to investigate the effects on morphometric and metabolic parameters of adult Wistar rats. Methods: The study used 15 male Wistar rats, aged 45 days old, divided into a control group and a cafeteria diet group. To the control group was offered a commercial diet ad libitum, while to the cafeteria diet group was offered the commercial diet supplemented each day with four items selected from a list of 28 foods. The consumption of foods from the cafeteria diet was checked daily, and the two groups’ consumption of water and feed was checked weekly. After seven weeks, the morphometric parameters were checked and animals were sacrificed for collection of blood and the deposit of perigonadal fat. Results: The mean weight of the cafeteria diet group was higher than that of the control group, as was abdominal circumference, deposit of perigonadal fat, body mass index and the Lee index. Furthermore, animals from the cafeteria diet group presented high blood levels of triglycerides; also, changes were not observed in levels of cholesterol and glucose. Animals from the cafeteria diet group ingested more calories, carbohydrates and fats than animals in the control group. Conclusion: This study showed that a protocol of offering a cafeteria diet formulated based in foods typically consumed by the Brazilian population can be used for inducing obesity in rats, requiring a relatively short time period for obtaining results.

Abstract: We sought (i) to evaluate the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), muscular fitness (MF) and Southern European Atlantic Diet (SEADiet) with atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and (ii) to investigate de combined association of MF, CRF and SEADiet on AIP in adolescents. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 493 adolescents (285 girls and 208 boys) aged 15-18 years, from the Portuguese Azorean Archipelago. CRF was measured by shuttle run test and MF by curl up and push up tests. Adherence to SEADiet was assessed with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The AIP was estimated as log (TG/HDL-C). Measures of pubertal stage and socioeconomic status were assessed. Linear regression showed a significant inverse association between MF (standardized β = -0.165; p < 0.001), CRF (standardized β = -0.081; p < 0.030) and SEADiet (standardized β = -0.081; p < 0.045) with AIP, after adjustments for age, sex, pubertal stage and parental education. Furthermore, participants classified with an optimal as well as those with low adherence to a SEADiet but with LowMF/LowCRF had on average the highest AIP (F(7.482) = 3.270; p = 0.002). Moreover, optimal SEADiet with HighMF/HighCRF group showed the lowest AIP when compared with those with low adherence to a SEADiet with HighMF/HighCRF group (p = 0.03). AIP is inversely associated with MF, CRF and SEADiet. The low MF combined with a low CRF levels seems to overcome the potential healthy effect of having an optimal adherence to the SEADiet on AIP. However, an optimal adherence to SEADiet seems to improve the AIP in those adolescents with high fitness levels.

Introduction: In the context of people living with HIV (PLHIV), dyslipidemia is an issue that has been widely discussed, both because of its multifactorial origin and its cardiovascular implications as well as because of its possible prevention strategies. Thus, this study aims to assess the presence of dyslipidemia in people living with HIV and its association with socio-demographic, attitudinal and clinical aspects. Materials and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted between 2014 and 2016. The data were collected through interviews in which questionnaires and clinical records were used. To analyze the association, Chi- Squared and Fisher's Exact tests and Kappa statistics were used for concordance analysis with a level of significance of p<0.05. Results: 340 individuals participated in the study of which 59.1% showed desirable values in terms of total cholesterol, 55.9% of HDL and 56.8% of triglycerides. The variables associated with dyslipidemia were: altered total cholesterol and being over 40 years old (p=0.02); desirable HDL-C and female sex (p=0.007); altered triglycerides and time of diagnosis greater than ten years (p=0.008); and desirable HDL-C and undetectable viral load (p=0.04). Discussion: Although dyslipidemia is a problem in the HIV context, the desirable values were more prevalent, which is reflected in the catalytic effect of the HIV-caused inflammatory activity on lipid alterations. Conclusions: Dyslipidemia on people living with HIV mainly showed desirable values for total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. There was an association between lipids and socio-demographic and clinical aspects related to VIH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study was to evaluate possible changes in serum lipid profile of castrated dogs, weight gain, body fat percentage and IMCC, and possible correlations of these changes with the time of castration. We also evaluated the influence of variations of sex, age, size, type of nutrition and physical inactivity on the serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose, weight gain, percentage of body fat and IMCC. We evaluated 44 dogs, seven entire and 37 castrated, without distinction of race and gender, aged one to 13 years, healthy. The dogs were divided into six groups according to the length of castration and a control group. Morphometric measurements were used to calculate the percentage of body fat, and IMCC calculation was also performed. In addition, animals were weighed and sorted in body condition scores. Serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose were measured for verification of probable alteration. Regarding the results, there was influence of sex and size (P≤0,05) on cholesterol levels, the size also influenced (P≤0,05) the percentage of body fat and the IMCC. Age influenced (P≤0,05), triglyceride levels. The type of feeding had effect (P≤0,05) in the IMCC and physical inactivity affected (P≤0,05) the percentage of body fat. It was also verified that there is correlation between time since castration and serum cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose, as well as weight gain, fat percentage and IMCC.

Abstract: Background: Although many factors are involved in the etiology of xanthelasma palpebrum, lipid disorder is strongly associated with its induction. Xanthelasma palpebrum, the most common type of xanthoma, usually presents in middle-aged females and results in aesthetic problems. Objective: To evaluate thelipid profile and important clinical aspects of xanthelasma palpebrum patients. Methods: In this descriptive study, we enrolled 42xanthelasma palpebrumpatients, and 42 cases of non-inflammatory skin disorders as thecontrol group, matched for age and gender. The clinical characteristics of the patients and fasting serum lipid profile were recorded for both groups. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS-16. Results: Xanthelasma palpebrum was found more commonly in middle-aged females with disease onset of less than 1 year, and without significant familial history of xanthoma. Furthermore, xanthelasma lesionswere most often seen in the upper lid with mild extension and was rarely associated with systemic disease. There was no statistically significant difference between two groups regarding hypertriglyceridemia (p= 0.231) and hypercholesterolemia (p= 0.302). The mean serum levels of cholesterol (221.51±60.4 mg/dl), triglyceride (185.98±71.1 mg/dl) and VLDL (37.7±17.6 mg/dl) were significantly higher and themedian HDL (36.2 (31, 41) mg/dl) level was lower in thepatient group. Conclusion: In our study, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia did not reveal a significant difference between thepatient and control groups; however, mean serum values for cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL and HDL showed a significant difference between the two groups. Therefore, in addition to lipid abnormality, other factors could be involved in the pathogenesis of xanthelasma palpebrum.

The present study investigated the effects of short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS) feeding on body weight, fat accumulation, glucose homeostasis and lipid profile in cafeteria (CAF) obese rats. Male Wistar rats were divided randomly into two groups: control group (CTL, n = 10), which received a chow diet and water and CAF (n = 20), which received the cafeteria diet, standard chow and soda. After 30 weeks of diet, 10 animals of CAF group received scFOS in the diet (50 g kg-1 of diet) over a period of 50 days, forming the CAF FOS group. Were evaluated the body weight, fat pad as well as, quantity of feces, glucose tolerance, insulin resistance (IR) and serum lipids levels. Animals submitted to the CAF diet displayed obesity, hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia and IR. The scFOS feeding not altered obesity, glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia and IR. CAF rats also presented hypertriglyceridemia and lower levels of HDL-cholesterol. The CAF FOS animals had reduced serum triglycerides (TG) and increased HDL-cholesterol. Thus, the use of scFOS in the diet can be considered as a hypolipidemic agent in the obese state.

We evaluated the relationship between hyperinsulinemia and anthropometric, metabolic, and hormonal parameters that might contribute to risk for coronary heart disease in 104 peri and postmenopausal women. Plasma glucose, insulin, LH, FSH, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and total testosterone (TT) were determined. Free androgen index (FAI) and fasting insulin to glucose ratio (IGR) were calculated. The cut-off point to define hyperinsulinemia was established at 23 mIU/mg. Mean age was 54.8 years. Mean age at menopause was 47.7 years. Body mass index (BMI) was >25 in 46 patients, and 28 (26.9%) were hyperinsulinemic.BMI, waist circumference, triglycerides, and 2-hour post-glucose insulin levels were significantly higher in hyperinsulinemic patients. Hyperinsulinemic patients had higher TT levels (p=0.02), FAI (p=0.0001), and lower SHBG levels (p=0.003). Positive correlations were observed between IGR and BMI, waist to hip ratio, waist circumference, and triglycerides. IGR and HDL-C were negatively correlated. IGR presented a positive association with TT and FAI, and a negative association with SHBG. FAI contributed positively to IGR, independently of BMI, age, or time since menopause. In conclusion, androgen levels may be important determinants of cardiovascular risk in peri and postmenopausal women. However, this observation should be confirmed by longitudinal studies. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diets with resistant starches in preventing the occurrence and/or severity of pseudomembranous colitis in animals treated with and without the antibiotic tetracycline. The experiment was carried out with 20 female Wistar rats, divided into four groups that received different diets: pregelatinized starch with 9.5% resistant starch; pregelatinized starch with 9.5% resistant starch and tetracycline; pregelatinized starch and resistant starch with 18.1% resistant starch and pregelatinized starch and resistant starch with 18.1% resistant starch and tetracycline. Weight, feed and water consumption were monitored for 21 days and analysis of total cholesterol, triglycerides and liver, muscle and cardiac glycogen were performed. Histological analysis of staining by hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid Schiff of the animals' large intestine was performed. The results showed changes in the cytoarchitecture of the intestinal colon of the animals, which varied according to the treatment to which they were submitted, showing from mucosal atrophy in animals that received tetracycline, the formation of edema and congestion of vessels in the submucosa in animals fed 18 .1% of resistant starch and the presence of cellular debris in the lumen of the organ and loss of brush border when it was associated with tetracycline, demonstrating changes in the absorption and intestinal functioning of the animals, which contributes to the loss of organ homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris are endemic in the northeastern region of São Paulo State, Brazil. They are treated mainly with systemic corticosteroids, which may provoke osteoporosis; atherosclerosis, higher blood pressure, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia and abdominal obesity. These side effects of corticoids also constitute criteria for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and each component of metabolic syndrome in Pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris groups was compared with Brazilian casuistic samples. METHODS: Data of 147 patients (pemphigus foliaceus 48.9% and pemphigus vulgaris 51.1%) were compiled from medical records regarding metabolic syndrome and its components, and included in the analysis. RESULTS: There was no significant difference regarding the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in pemphigus groups compared with the Brazilian casuistic samples. The analysis of each component of metabolic syndrome showed a higher prevalence of: higher blood pressure in male subjects with pemphigus vulgaris, and in pemphigus foliaceus in both genders; diabetes mellitus in both genders for pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus; obesity in females for pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus, and hypertriglyceridemia in both genders for pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus groups that were statistically significant compared to the Brazilian reports. Furthermore, the study noted a higher incidence of cardiovascular events in both genders in pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris groups than in Brazilian casuistic samples. CONCLUSION: The components of metabolic syndrome are more numerous in pemphigus when compared with Brazilian casuistic samples. Future studies are necessary to assure that metabolic syndrome may be associated with pemphigus per se, including a greater casuistic sample of patients who have not taken corticoids.

The present study aimed to demonstrate the hypolipidemic activity of aqueous extract of leaves of breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis, in a model of acute hyperlipidemia induced with triton X-305, using Rattus norvegicus specimens males, mean weight 204.5 g, who were orally administered 0.05 g/100g and 0.2 g/100 g of aqueous extract of A. altilis; included a negative control group received physiological saline and hyperlipidemic positive control group. After 24 hours of administering the treatments were made measurements of the concentrations of serum cholesterol and triglycerides. Found significant reductions (p < 0.01) in both cholesterol and triglyceride levels relative to the positive control group. We also found a significant difference (p < 0.01) between triglyceride concentrations of the animals treated with both doses of the aqueous extract of A. altilis. Conclude that the aqueous extract from the leaves of A. altilis has hypolipidemic effect at the doses tested for the model of hyperlipidemia induced with triton X-305.

- Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the effect of propylene glycol inclusion in water pregnant ewes on energy metabolic parameters. We evaluated 28 pregnant ewes which received various levels of propylene glycol (PG) in water. These sheep were distributed in four treatments (0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% PG) in a randomized design in a split plot design. The highest propylene glycol inclusion (3.0 and 4.5%) in the water caused linear increase in blood glucose concentration throughout the gestational period. The blood glucose concentration in sheep receiving 3% propylene glycol in water increased linearly with the increase in the collection period. On the other hand, for the sheep who received 4.5% of propylene glycol response was quadratic. The addition of propylene glycol in the pregnant sheep of water improves energy metabolic parameters, and the use of this substance it's very important to minimize the negative energy balance at the end of pregnancy. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype and its associated factors among subjects that have been followed up from birth. In 1982, all maternity hospitals in the city of Pelotas, in the Southern Region of Brazil, were visited and all births were recorded. Babies whose parents lived in the urban area of Pelotas were subsequently followed up on several occasions. A 22 to 23-year follow-up of this birth cohort was carried out in 2004 and 2005. The presence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype was defined as waist circumference ≥ 90cm and triglyceride levels ≥ 177mg/dL for males, and waist circumference ≥ 85cm and triglyceride levels ≥ 133mg/dL for females. The prevalence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype was 5.9% and 4.5% among men and women, respectively. Among males, a sedentary lifestyle during leisure time, smoking and obesity were associated with the presence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype, whereas among females the condition was positively associated with skin color, family income, obesity and dietary fat intake.

OBJECTIVE: Summarize data on metabolic syndrome (MS) in bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the Medline, Embase and PsycInfo databases, using the keywords "metabolic syndrome", "insulin resistance" and "metabolic X syndrome" and cross-referencing them with "bipolar disorder" or "mania". The following types of publications were candidates for review: (i) clinical trials, (ii) studies involving patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder or (iii) data about metabolic syndrome. A 5-point quality scale was used to assess the methodological weight of the studies. RESULTS: Thirty-nine articles were selected. None of studies reached the maximum quality score of 5 points. The prevalence of MS was significantly higher in BD individuals when compared to a control group. The analysis of MS subcomponents showed that abdominal obesity was heterogeneous. Individuals with BD had significantly higher rates of hypertriglyceridemia than healthy controls. When compared to the general population, there were no significant differences in the prevalence of low HDL-c in individuals with BD. Data on hypertension were also inconclusive. Rates of hyperglycemia were significantly greater in patients with BD compared to the general population. CONCLUSIONS: The overall results point to the presence of an association between BD and MS, as well as between their subcomponents.

Colostrum is primarily known for its importance in the transfer of passive immunity, however its function goes far beyond this. Colostrum is closely involved with intestinal development providing different nutrients and this development directly reflects on the animal's production of meat or milk. The presence of growth factors, insulin and other compounds promote cell growth and differentiation in addition to gastrointestinal development, these growth factors present in colostrum are responsible for stimulating mucosal growth, enzymes, increased villi size and glucose uptake. The aim of the study was to understand the role of insulin, IGF-1 and leptin in colostrum in correlation with plasma metabolites in calves and the relationship of their concentration with development and weight gain of these animals raised under the same conditions. Twenty crossbred beef cattle were used, 12 primiparous (G1) and 8 multiparous (G2) and their 20 calves. The animals were kept in an extensive system under continuous grazing in a ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) paddock during calving and sampling period. For the evaluation of blood metabolites, single blood samples were collected from the females for glucose, hematocrit, protein, cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin and insulin, soon after calving (T0) and from calves at birth (T0), at 24 (T24), 48 (T48) and 168 (T168) hours of life for glucose, hematocrit, protein, GGT, cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin, insulin, IGF-1 and leptin. For analysis of fat, lactose, brix, protein, insulin, leptin and IGF-1 from colostrum, this was collected before the first feeding. For performance evaluation, calves were weighed at birth (0) and every 30 days until 6 months of age. There were no differences between the colostrum composition of multiparous and primiparous cows (P>0.05), colostrum insulin was negatively correlated with colostral lactose and positively correlated with protein (P0.05). Among calves, there were differences in cholesterol concentration at T24 (P0.05). Insulin and IGF-1 present in the colostrum of the animals studied did not influence the final performance in weaning calves and, despite the high concentration of insulin in the colostrum, there are no changes in the biochemical parameters studied, except for triglycerides, suggesting that there is no absorption of these. There were no differences in colostrum composition between primiparous and multiparous raised in extensive conditions, the bioactive compounds did not influence the performance of calves and calves raised in the same conditions showed similar metabolism in the first week of life. More tissue-level studies are needed to understand the presence of high concentrations of insulin and IGF-1 in bovine colostrum.

BACKGROUND: Isotretinoin has been used to treat the most severe cases of acne; however, it may provoke adverse events in mucocutaneous and hepatic tissues, lead to alterations in lipid levels and cause teratogenicity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the profile of changes in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and triglyceride levels in patients who had been treated with oral isotretinoin dispensed by the São Mateus/ES pharmacy for special drugs. METHODS: A retrospective, observational, longitudinal study was conducted by carrying out a secondary analysis of each patient's data. RESULTS: Of the 130 patients who received isotretinoin between January and December 2009, only 70 were actually treated for 3 months or more and handed in the results of their laboratory tests. Of these 70 patients, 39 (55.7%) were female. The mean age of the women (23.9 years) was higher than the mean age of the men (20.1 years). There was a statistically significant increase in the levels of triglycerides (87.01 ± 48.25 versus 105.32 ± 48.76 mg/dL), AST (20.44 ± 6.26 versus 24.38 ± 11.92 U/L) and ALT (18.24 ± 8.31 versus 23.34 ± 20.03 U/L) performed prior to and 3 months or more after oral isotretinoin treatment. After treatment with oral isotretinoin, triglyceride levels had increased beyond the normal range in 11% of the patients, while 8.6% had elevated AST levels and 7.3% had increased ALT levels. CONCLUSION: The results in this population show that the use of oral isotretinoin for the treatment of acne may result in altered triglyceride, AST and ALT levels. These findings are in accordance with data published previously in the scientific literature, confirming the need to monitor these patients.FUNDAMENTOS: A isotretinoína tem sido usada no tratamento dos casos mais graves de acne, embora possa induzir reações adversas nos tecidos mucocutâneos e hepáticos, alterações nos níveis lipídicos e teratogenicidade. Desses 70 pacientes, 39 (55,7%) eram do sexo feminino.

There is a growing interest in functional foods that, apart from their nutritional function, bring health benefits, contributing to wellbeing and/or reducing the risk of certain diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the functional effect of a soybean and rice beverage on the ponderal and nutritional parameters and on the lipid and glycemic metabolisms of male hamsters. Four groups of 8 animals were used: Control (commercial feed), C (commercial feed with added cholesterol), B (commercial feed plus beverage) and CB (commercial feed plus cholesterol and beverage). The food efficiency coefficient was equivalent for all the groups. The weight of the liver was on average 28% heavier in groups C and CB than in the other groups, indicating cholesterol deposition in this organ. Although there was no significant difference, the concentrations of total cholesterol and of its fractions (LDL and HDL) and of the triglycerides, were lower in group CB than in group C, showing a possible benefic effect of the beverage. The harmful effects of obesity on dog health are quite mentioned in the literature, but little investigated. The term hyperlipidemia refers to the increase of lipid and/or fat concentration (cholesterol, triglycerides or both) in serum. These disorders are relatively common in dogs and may happen as a result of a primary defect in metabolism of lipoproteins or as a consequence of a subjacent systemic disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of obese dogs that present alterations on cholesterol and triglycerides serum concentration, and to study the correlation of these disorders with obesity degree, sex, age and castration. Thirty obese dogs with body condition score (BCS) equal or superior to 8 (on a scale between one to nine, and nine representing severe obesity) and a control group of ten dogs with BCS 5 were included. Animals with BCS 9 (n=21 dogs) presented a frequency of 52.4% (n=11 dogs) of hypercholesterolemia and 33.3% (n=7) of hypertriglyceridemia. Dogs with BCS 8 (n=9) presented a frequency of 22,2% (n=2) of hypercholesterolemia and 33,3% (n=3) of hypertriglyceridemia. These alterations also presented correspondence with female sex, age between 4 and 7 years and castration. However, the cholesterol and triglycerides increases were moderate, and not remained within the range of recognized health risk.
