The golden-headed lion tamarin is a primate from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. A female captive of the Fundação Zoo-Botânica de Belo Horizonte-MG, died after anesthesia and caudectomy. Necropsy was performed and tissue samples were collected for histopathology. In the liver, there was a hepatocellular carcinoma, associated with portal fibrosis, biliary duct proliferation, and megalocytosis. These changes are suggestive of chronic aflatoxicosis. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a rare neoplasia in non human primates, and the carcinogenic effect of aflatoxin on these animals has already been demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
