The present study investigated whether low and high spatial frequency filtered images of faces were recognized differently when briefly presented in the right and the left visual fields of men and women. The method of confidence rating was applied to assess pooled Receiver Operating Characteristic curves based on z scores and the d´ parameter of Signal Detection Theory for recognition indices, in addition to response times. The results showed that men better recognized low spatial frequency filtered faces than high spatial frequency filtered faces in both visual fields, suggesting that both the right and left hemispheres in males prioritize low spatial frequencies to recognize faces. The results for women were similar to men only when the faces were shown in the left visual field. When the faces were presented in the right visual field, women better recognized high spatial frequency filtered faces, suggesting that the left hemisphere in females prioritizes high spatial frequencies, whereas the right hemisphere in females prioritizes low spatial frequencies to recognize faces.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar curvas de sensibilidade ao contraste para estímulos radiais (FSCr) e grades senoidais (FSC) de 0,25, 0,5, 1 e 2 cpg em crianças de 6 a 13 anos. Foram mensurados limiares de contraste para 40 crianças, utilizando o método psicofísico da escolha forçada e níveis baixos de luminância. Todas estavam livres de doenças oculares e tinham acuidade visual normal. Os resultados mostraram que a sensibilidade das crianças foi maior para grades senoidais (FSC) do que para estímulos radiais (FSCr). Esses resultados sugerem que esses estímulos podem ser processados por áreas visuais distintas. The aim of this work was to compare contrast sensitivity curves for radial (rCSF) and sine-wave gratings (CSF) stimuli of 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 cpd in 6 to 13 year-old-children. It was measured the contrast thresholds of 40 children using the psychophysical forced-choice method and low luminance levels. All children were free of identifiable ocular diseases and had normal acuity. The results showed that contrast sensitivity of the children was higher for spatial frequencies (CSF) than radial frequencies (rCSF). The results suggest that these stimuli can be processed by different visual cortical areas.

Epilepsy is a brain dysfunction characterized by the repeated tendency of the brain to cause epileptic crisis and by the neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences of this condition. In these terms, the aim of this work is to determine the visual sensory threshold of children and adolescents who have and who do not have epilepsy, analyzing possible alterations in the form related to this dysfunction. The sensory threshold is defined as the smallest intensity of incentive a human being is capable of detecting. The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) is the inverse of the threshold curve of contrast (1/CSF). This way, the CSF is a tool that allows us to label the answer of SV to visual patterns in low, medium and high levels of contrast and evaluate possible sensorial alterations associated with the visual processing. The main idea is that the elevation or reduction of the CSF can happen deem to sensorial, cognitive and behavioral alterations. Twenty volunteers participated on this study, from both genders, between 7 and 17 years of age, 10 of whom nonepileptic and 10 epileptic (tonic-clonic crisis). All of them presented either normal or corrected visual accuracy and were distributed in groups that were equivalent in age. The resolutions were taken from the psychophysical forced-choice method, using the static sine wave gratings with spatial frequencies of 0.25, 2.0 and 8.0 cpd (cycles per degree of visual angle). During each experimental session, there were stimulus pares presented randomly (test stimulus and neutral), and the task of the participants was to choose always the test stimulus with one of the frequencies above. The criterion used was the one of three consecutive correct answers to low the contrast in one unity and just one mistake to increase the contrast in the same unity (20%). After each session, a sheet of results with the experimental situation was released and the six values of contrast were calculated by the reversions. The values of contrast obtained to each frequency were grouped in spreadsheets separated by condition (with or without epilepsy) and the big average was used as an estimative of the sensory threshold or of the sensibility to the contrast due to each spatial frequency tested. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a qualidade óptica de olhos adaptados com dois tipos diferentes de lentes de contato gelatinosas: Acuvue® 2 (Vistacon J&J Vision Care Inc., EUA) e World Vision Disposable Asférica Wave Front® (World Vision Ophthalmic, Brasil). MÉTODOS: Estudo clínico e prospectivo com intervenção em amostra constituída por 40 indivíduos portadores de miopia entre -0,75D e -4,50D, sem ou com astigmatismo até -0,75D. Um olho de cada paciente foi sorteado para avaliação a qual incluiu acuidade visual de alto e baixo contraste, aberrometria e teste de sensibilidade ao contraste. RESULTADOS: A sobre-refração objetiva realizada pelo Nidek OPD-Scan detectou hipercorreção significativa para ambas as lentes de contato gelatinosas. A avaliação da AV logMAR de alto e baixo contraste mostrou diferença significativa favorável das lentes de contato gelatinosas em relação aos óculos e na comparação entre as lentes de contato gelatinosas, apenas em relação à AV logMAR de alto contraste, houve melhor desempenho da LC World Vision Disposable Asférica Wave Front® . A avaliação de sensibilidade ao contraste detectou melhor desempenho das lentes de contato gelatinosas em relação aos óculos para as freqüências espaciais de 1,5; 3; 6 e 18. Não houve diferença significativa entre os dois tipos de lentes de contato gelatinosas nas freqüências espaciais avaliadas. A análise de frentes de onda não identificou diferença significativa do índice de Strehl, função de transferência modular (MTF) e das aberrações de alta ordem (aberrações totais, coma, trefoil, quadrifoil, esférica e astigmatismo secundário) sem e com as lentes de contato gelatinosas, bem como na comparação entre elas. CONCLUSÃO: Houve melhor desempenho óptico da lente de contato gelatinosa World Vision Disposable Asférica Wave Front® na medida de AV logMAR de alto contraste. Não houve diferença entre as lentes de contato gelatinosas nas avaliações de acuidade visual logMAR de baixo contraste, sensibilidade ao contraste, índice de Strehl, MTF e das aberrações de alta ordem. PURPOSE: To evaluate the optical performance of eyes fitted with two different soft contact lenses: Acuvue® 2 (Vistacon J&J Vision Care Inc., USA) and World Vision Disposable Asférica Wave Front® (World Vision Ophthalmic, Brazil). METHODS: An interventional prospective clinical trial studied a sample of 40 myopic patients (-0.75D to -4.50D, with or without astigmatism up to -0.75D). Each patient had one eye randomized to visual performance evaluation including high and low contrast visual acuities, wavefront analysis and contrast sensitivity. RESULTS: The Nidek OPD Scan detected a residual refraction (hypercorrection) for both contact lenses. High contrast visual acuity was significantly higher for World Vision soft contact lenses. Low contrast visual acuity was similar for both soft contact lenses. Contrast sensitivity improved significantly at 1.5; 3; 6 e 18 spatial frequencies for both soft contact lenses, but no difference was found between them. Regarding wavefront analysis, no difference was found between both soft contact lenses. There were not significantly differences in the Strehl indices and MTF for both soft contact lenses. CONCLUSION: World Vision Disposable Asférica Wave Front® soft contact lenses had a better performance regarding high contrast visual acuity. However, low contrast visual acuity, wavefront analysis and contrast sensitivity were similar for both soft contact lenses.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar o método psicofísico da escolha forçada para mensurar a função de sensibilidade ao contraste para freqüências espaciais (FSC) na faixa de 0,25 a 2 cpg, em crianças pré-escolares. Foram estimados limiares de contraste para 15 participantes (10 crianças e cinco adultos). Os resultados mostraram que as curvas de sensibilidade (FSC) de crianças de 4 e 5 anos e adultos apresentam perfis gerais semelhantes, embora sejam diferentes entre si. Estes resultados sugerem que o método psicofísico da escolha forçada pode ser utilizado para mensurar a FSC de crianças a partir dos 4 anos. The aim of this work was to use the psychophysical forced-choice staircase method to measure contrast sensitivity function for spatial frequencies (CSF) in the range between 0.25 and 4 cpd in preschool children and adults. We estimated the contrast thresholds of 15 participants (10 children and five adults). The results showed that the sensitivity curves (CSF) of 4 and 5 years old chidren and adults were similar in general profiles although they were different between themselves. These results suggest that the psychophysical forced-choice staircase method can be used to measure the CSF of children over 4 years old.

Em termos gerais, a FSC tem sido usada para caracterizar o desenvolvimento da percepção visual da forma de crianças. O objetivo do presente estudo foi mensurar e comparar curvas de sensibilidade ao contraste para estímulos radiais (FSCr) e grades senoidais (FSC) em crianças pré-escolares com o método psicofísico da escolha forçada- senoidais de 0,25; 0,5; 1 e 2 cpg em crianças pré-escolares (4 e 5 anos) e adultos jovens com o método psicofísico da escolha forçada. Participaram 15 voluntários com a acuidade visual normal ou corrigida distribuídos igualmente nas três faixas etárias. Os resultados mostraram que a sensibilidade melhora com o desenvolvimento e que a sensibilidade de todos os participantes foi maior para as grades senoidais do que para as freqüências radiais. Estes resultados sugerem que os estímulos radiais e as grades senoidais são processados por áreas visuais diferentes. The aim of the present work was to mensure and compare contrast the sensitivity curves to differ then of the radical stimuly (FSCr) and sine-wave gratings (FSC) in pré-school children, usind the psychophysical method of choice-forced for radial and sine-wave gratings stimuli of 0.25; 0.5; 1 and 2 cpd in 4-5 yearold preschool children and young adults using the psychophysical forced-choice staircase method. Fifteen volunteers with corrected-to-normal visual acuity, five in each age range, participated in the experiments. The results showed that the sensitivity improves with the development and that in for all participants the sensitivity was higher for sine-wave gratings than the radial frequencies. These results suggest that the radial and the sine-wave gratings stimuli are processed by different visual areas.

O potencial provocado visual (VEP) é uma resposta cortical registrável na superfície do couro cabeludo, que reflete a atividade dos neurônios de V1. É classificado, a partir da freqüência temporal de estimulação, em transiente ou de estado estacionário. Outras propriedades do estímulo parecem provocar uma atividade seletiva dos diversos grupos de neurônios existentes em V1. Desse modo, o VEP vem sendo usado para estudar a visão humana acromática e cromática. Diversos trabalhos usaram o VEP para estimar a sensibilidade ao contraste de luminância no domínio das freqüências espaciais. Mais recentemente, há estudos que empregaram o VEP para medir os limiares de discriminação de cores. O VEP transiente pode complementar as medidas psicofísicas de sensibilidade ao contraste espacial de luminância e de discriminação cromática, e constitui um método não invasivo para estudar a visão de indivíduos com dificuldades de realizar testes psicofísicos. The Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) is a cortical response obtainable on the scalp. It usually reflects the activity from V1 neurons. It is classified in transient or steady-state, according with the temporal frequency of stimulation. Other stimuli properties evoke a selective activity from different neuronal groups found in V1. This way, VEP have been used to study luminance and chromatic human vision. Several studies used VEP to estimate luminance contrast sensitivity in the spatial frequency domain. More recently, some studies used VEP to measure color discrimination thresholds. The transient VEP shows a good agreement with psychophysical measurements of spatial luminance contrast sensitivity and color discrimination, being a noninvasive method to study vision from subjects with difficulty to perform psychophysical tests. Le potenciel évoqué visuel (VEP) est une réponse corticale qui peut être enregistrée à la surface du cuir chevelu. Il reflète l'activité des neurones de V1 et est classifié, selon la fréquence de stimulation temporale, en transitoire ou stationnaire. D'autres propriétés du stimulus semblent provoquer une activité sélective des divers groupes de neurones existants dans V1. Ainsi, le VEP est utilisé pour étudier la vision humaine achromatique et chromatique. Divers travaux ont utilisé le VEP pour estimer la sensibilité au contraste de luminance dans le domaine des fréquences spatiales. Plus récemment, des études ont utilisé le VEP pour mesurer les seuils de discrimination des couleurs. Le VEP transitoire peut compléter les mesures psychophysiques de sensibilité au contraste spatial de luminance et de discrimination chromatique et constitue une méthode non envahissante pour étudier la vision des sujets avec des difficultés à réaliser les tests psychophysiques.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi mensurar curvas de sensibilidade ao contraste para freqüências angulares e senoidais em idosos. Foram estimados limiares de contraste para um grupo de jovens com idade entre 20-26 anos e um grupo de idosos com idade entre 60-67 anos. Todos os sujeitos apresentavam acuidade visual normal e se encontravam livres de doenças oculares identificáveis. As freqüências angulares e senoidais estimadas com o método psicofísico da escolha forçada foram: 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64 e 96 ciclos/360º e 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 e 9 cpg, respectivamente. Os resultados mostraram declínio na sensibilidade ao contraste nos idosos nas freqüências angulares e senoidais médias e altas comparados aos jovens. Encontramos, ainda, que a sensibilidade ao contraste dos idosos nas freqüências angulares baixas é melhor do que a dos jovens. Estes resultados são consistentes com alterações na sensibilidade ao contraste relacionados ao processo de envelhecimento. The aim of this work was to measure contrast sensitivity curves for angular and spatial frequencies in the aged. We measured the contrast thresholds from young adults (20-26 years-old) and aged (60-67 years-old). All the participants had good visual acuity and were free from significant ocular pathology. The angular and spatial frequencies measured with a forced-choice psychophysic method were 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64 and 96 cycle/360º and 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 9 cpd, respectively. The results showed a loss in contrast sensitivity for the aged at high and medium angular and spatial frequencies compared to the younger group. We still found that the contrast sensitivity of the aged group at low angular frequency is better than the younger group. These results are consistent with age-related changes in contrast sensitivity function.

Este trabalho discute alguns aspectos teóricos sobre os modelos detector de características e análise de freqüência espacial em cinco seções. A primeira mostra uma breve história e a idéia básica de cada modelo. A segunda mostra evidências psicofísicas e neurofisiológicas sobre a seletividade à freqüência espacial. A terceira, a quarta e a quinta mostram aspectos controversos sobre estes modelos: freqüência espacial versus detectores de características, filtragem local versus global e processamento espacial linear versus não-linear, respectivamente. Um dos objetivos deste trabalho foi discutir tópicos importantes sobre percepção e processamento visual da forma. This work discusses some aspects about feature detectors and spatial frequency analysis models in five sections. The first section describes briefly historical aspects and the basic rationale idea of each model. The second section shows the neurophysiological and psychophysical evidences about spatial frequency selectivity. The third, the fourth and the fifth sections show controversial aspects about these models: spatial frequency versus feature detectors, global versus local filtering and nonlinear versus linear spatial processing, respectively. One of the goals of this paper is to discuss important aspects about perception and visual processing of form.

Este trabalho discute a função de sensibilidade ao contraste, FSC, em três seções. A primeira descreve alguns aspectos teóricos e experimentais da FSC relacionados à pesquisa básica e aplicada. A segunda discute alguns estímulos espaciais utilizados para caracterizar a FSC ou a resposta do sistema visual humano. A terceira apresenta algumas considerações finais sobre a FSC e estímulos espaciais elementares. Um dos objetivos deste trabalho é discutir a FSC que junto com a acuidade visual parecem formar os principais indicadores dos aspectos críticos da percepção visual da forma e da resolução espacial. A FSC geralmente estima a percepção de qualquer padrão em função de sua freqüência espacial. This work discusses the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) in three sections. The first describes some theoretical and experimental questions of the CSF related to basic and hard-working research. The second section discusses some elementary spatial stimuli used to characterize the CSF or the response of the human visual system. The third section shows some final considerations about CSF and spatial elementary stimuli. One of the goals of this paper is to discuss the CSF that together with visual acuity appear to form important indicators of the critical aspects of the visual perception of form and of the spatial resolution. The CSF normally is an estimate of the visibility of any pattern in function of the spatial frequency.
