This study aims to discuss the work trajectory of transvestites and transsexual women in the labor market in Recife. With an exploratory character, of an applied nature and a qualitative approach, this research was developed around seven interviews with transvestites and transsexual women, based on a semi-structured script. The collected data where analyzed by a thematic content analysis, based on the relationship between the occupation of transsexual and transvestite women with schooling, professional training, family support and the non-inclusive job market. It might be seen that, due to prejudices and discrimination in society, this population suffers social exclusion, which begins with the rejection by the family, passing through a hostile and non-inclusive school environment, and a formal labor market with few opportunities. In this context, prostitution often becomes a mean for survival, and one of the few spaces in which the gender identity of this population is legitimized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
