CROHN'S disease , *MENTAL health personnel , *GASTROINTESTINAL diseases , *DISEASE management , *QUALITY of life - Abstract
Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal disease characterized by involvement from the mouth to the rectum through inflammatory, stenosing and penetrating symptoms, in addition to other complications, with its main pathogenic suspicion being related to bacterial imbalance in the body. This is a case report (with data obtained from the patient's medical records) with a literature review of 15 articles obtained from PubMed, SciELO and LILACS databases. The analysis of the case highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and adequate treatment of CD, as well as the complexity of disease management in severe cases. In addition, we emphasize the physical and emotional challenges faced by patients with CD, including multiple medical interventions, adaptation to changes in bowel function and concerns about quality of life. To improve patient functionality, CD management requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes surgeons, nutritionists, gastroenterologists and mental health professionals. PSYCHOTHERAPY , *MENTAL illness , *PATIENT compliance , *DRUG therapy , *QUALITY of life - Abstract
Modern forms of treatment that combine psychotherapy and medication intervention have been used in a wide range of possibilities. Furthermore, there has been a greater demand for the use of appropriate medications, combined with the use of psychotherapeutic techniques, which has increasingly drawn the attention of both psychologists and psychiatrists. The combination between these two therapies has proven to be especially important in situations of bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and even schizophrenia, where the use of medication alone tends to stabilize the condition. The present study discusses mental health and the benefits of an association between psychological treatment and drug therapy. It was concluded that the combination of psychotherapy with pharmacotherapy represents a more complete strategy for the treatment of various mental disorders. Although there are challenges to be faced, the benefits of this combination, such as more effective reduction of symptoms, prevention of relapses and better adherence to treatment, demonstrate that this is a powerful strategy to improve patients' quality of life. TELECOMMUTING , *INFORMATION technology , *INDUSTRIAL relations , *QUALITY of life , *JOB performance - Abstract
The performance and quality of life of employees in any company or organization are aspects of great importance for all entities involved, as balance is necessary between both parties to enable a healthy and efficient employment relationship. Thus, one of the ways that companies can manipulate the way their employees work is by establishing work models that employees must follow, these being in-person, remote and hybrid, each with different characteristics and impacts on performance and quality. of life. Based on this, this work sought to analyze the impacts of work models on the performance and quality of life of employees in the Information Technology area. From a methodological point of view, a Survey research was carried out whose data were collected through the application of a questionnaire. Based on the responses obtained, a statistical treatment was carried out through which hypothesis tests were carried out to verify the impact of the remote work model in relation to others. Finally, it was concluded that the remote work model, based on the data collected, presents good evidence that it contributes positively to performance and quality of life. Furthermore, it was also found that the remote work model presents significant evidence of a positive impact on quality in relation to other models, however, there is not enough evidence to confirm that this statement is true for performance. WORK environment , *QUALITY of work life , *QUALITY of life , *WELL-being , *MATURATION (Psychology) - Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the perceptions of civil servants at a water and sewage company in a city in the interior of Rondônia about aspects related to QWL. The research, which was descriptive in nature and took a qualitative approach, involved 14 civil servants from this institution, who answered a sociodemographic and work-related form, 12 of whom also answered an interview about their perceptions of QWL. The sociodemographic data was analyzed using statistical procedures and the interviews were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. The respondents' perceptions of what they understood by QWL were different from those that referred to the QWL actually provided by the organization studied. In the company's environment, the categories Socio-professional Work Relationships and Work-Social Life Link were those with the highest number of positive aspects in the respondents' assessment, unlike others such as Recognition and Personal Growth, Work Organization and Working Conditions, in which many challenging aspects to QWL were identified, and it should be noted that the latter was pointed out as one of the main desirable elements for achieving quality of life in the workplace. This study has provided a basis for reflection on the company's work environment, identifying critical areas and suggesting strategies for action, since those surveyed perceive their QWL to be average, considering that there are various aspects, including health protection and well-being, which require action on the part of the institution studied. Objectives: To compare the effects of orienteering vs hiking on the physical fitness and quality of life of older adults. Methods: A 24-week randomized controlled trial was conducted with 96 participants who were assigned to orienteering (OG), hiking (HG), or a control group (CG) with no intervention. Physical fitness was assessed with the handgrip strength, chair stand, 6-minute walk, sit-and-reach, and balance tests, with monitoring of blood pressure (BP) and resting heart rate. Generalized Estimating Equations were used for within- and between-group comparisons, with effect sizes (ES) calculated. Baseline and post-intervention differences were assessed using unpaired and paired tests. Results: Significant improvement in balance were observed, with OG reducing their time by -6.23 seconds (29.1%; ES = 0.83) and HG by -2.12 seconds (9.9%; ES = 0.49), p = 0.017. For paired effects, hemodynamic parameters showed a reduction in systolic (p = 0.014) and diastolic (p < 0.001) BP in the OG and in diastolic BP (p < 0.004) in the HG. Interaction effects were significant for all physical fitness and hemodynamic parameters compared with the CG (p < 0.001), with effect sizes ranging from medium to large. Quality of life significantly improved in the intervention groups (p < 0.001) compared with the CG (p = 0.571). Conclusion: Older adults participating in orienteering and hiking experienced improvement in their physical fitness and quality of life, with orienteering showing a greater effect on balance. These activities are valuable for healthy aging programs, as sedentary behavior should be prevented. This trial was registered at the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry (REBEC): RBR-99jmmpf.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual function arises from a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors. Few Brazilian studies have addressed sexuality in the elderly population — 10–20% of individuals are sexually active. OBJECTIVES: To compare the overall quality of sexual life and its domains in adult and elderly female college students. METHODS: Female students from the University of Amapá, Brazil, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The Female Sexual Quotient (FSQ) questionnaire was used to assess various components of quality of sexual life in adult (34–59 years old) and elderly (60–79 years old) students. The study was approved by the institutional review board. RESULTS: A total of 123, of which 49.6% were married, participated in this study. Mean FSQ score for the elderly group was (n=66) 61.5, classified as “average” and for the adult group 71.6, classified as “partially satisfied” (p < 0.01). Statistically significant differences between adults and elderly groups were also observed for two FSQ domains: “foreplay quality” (p < 0.001), and “objective arousal and harmony with the partner” betters in the adults group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In this sample, elderly college student showed worst FSQ scores when compared to the adult ones at the same university. Compared to adult women, the quality of sexual life varies more in elderly, probably reflecting age-related morbidities as well as their partners’ health. Adult women report foreplay quality being a strong motivation to continue having sex. In the elderly students, sexual arousal is mainly affected by a lack of vaginal lubrication, which is explained primarily by menopause.

INTRODUCTION: Patients indicated for palliative care may have losses in functional capacity and quality of life, but there is little information about these conditions in primary health care. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the functional and symptomatic aspects of individuals indicated for palliative care in primary care. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study involved six family health teams from three basic health units in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil that indicated patients with palliative care needs. The patients were assessed with the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire. RESULTS: 73 patients (30 men and 43 women) whose mean age was 77.2 ± 12.1 years were included. Dementia and cerebrovascular diseases were the most frequent conditions, with 20 (27%) and 19 (26%) patients, respectively. The mean KPS score was 47.9 ± 13.9 points (44 ± 11.3 points for men and 51 ± 11.3 for women), with a significant difference between the sexes (p = 0.023). Cancer patients had better functionality than those with neurological diseases. The ESAS, whose mean score was below 3 points (mild intensity), indicated that the most frequent symptoms were impaired well-being, pain, fatigue and drowsiness. Patients without caregivers had better functional status, but greater pain and fatigue intensity. CONCLUSION: All patients had some functional limitations, and those with neurological diseases were the most affected. The symptoms were generally mild. The presence of caregivers may positively influence symptom control.

INTRODUCTION: The increase in the world’s elderly population in recent decades calls for research on quality of life during the aging process. Heart rate variability (HRV) evaluates the modulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and indicates the heart’s ability to respond to multiple physiological and environmental stimuli, as well as to disease. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the perceived quality of life of older people and its association with HRV. METHOD: Twenty-nine subjects (69 ± 7.76 years) were selected at a preventive medicine center and completed a questionnaire (World Health Organization quality of life assessment — old module: WHOQOL-OLD). The HRV data were collected for 20 minutes in the supine position using a Polar RS800CX frequency meter. RESULTS: Using the median value as a cut-off point, the sample was divided into two groups: WHOQOL-OLD ≥ 92 (n = 15: better quality of life) and WHOQOL-OLD ≤ 91 (n = 13; lower quality of life). For the HRV timedomain variables RMSSD and pNN50, there were higher values in the WHOQOL-OLD ≥ 92 group (p = 0.0413 and p = 0.0222, respectively). For the frequency-domain variables, low-frequency (LF), high-frequency (HF) and Total Power, there were also higher values in the WHOQOL-OLD group ≥ 92 (p = 0.0195, p = 0.0170 and p = 0.0287, respectively). The non-linear variable SD1 was significantly higher in the WHOQOL-OLD ≥ 92 group (p = 0.0413), while DET% was significantly higher in the WHOQOLOLD ≤ 91 group (p = 0.0253). CONCLUSIONS: Better quality of life in older adults is associated with normal ANS function, represented by higher values found through three HRV analysis methods. This indicates the importance of a healthy lifestyle for healthy aging, which includes improvement in autonomic function and, consequently, quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviewed studies that relate aspects of double vulnerability (caregivers' physical health, caregivers' self-perceived health, care recipients' dependency and perceived burden) with psychological aspects of caregivers' quality of life. METHODS: The search was conducted in the PubMed, Capes, LILACS, SciELO and AgeLine indexes using keywords in English and their corresponding words in Portuguese. RESULTS: Twenty-three papers were analyzed. With regards to the methods, most articles were made up of transversal studies and included various outcomes. There was a wide age range for the caregivers in the studies' samples, and many of them presented incomplete information about age. CONCLUSION: The results showed that a caregiver's quality of life is affected by several simultaneous variables such as the degree and type of dependency of the elderly person receiving care, the caregiver's health, perceived burden, and positive and negative affects.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to assess the effect of Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) on functional capacity (FC) and quality of life (QoL) in elderly men with low bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: This quasi-experimental, controlled blinded trial evaluated 41 senior men (≥ 60 years), divided into two groups: control group 1 – G1 (TCC; n = 20; 69.2 ± 6.2 years) and control group 2 – G2 (control; n = 21; 69.0 ± 5.7 years). The BMD (of lumbar spine and femur neck) was assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). FC was assessed for aerobic endurance, for upper and lower limbs strength and flexibility, for static, dynamic and functional balance testes, and for risk of falls. QoL was assessed by the SF-36 questionnaire (MOS 36-item Short-Form Health Survey). G1 practiced the 24-form Yang style of TCC, for 12 weeks twice a week on low intensity; G2 did not practice oriented physical activity. RESULTS: TCC practitioners had significantly higher scores for aerobic endurance, upper and lower limbs strength, and dynamic balance. In terms of QoL, values were significantly better in total score and aspects such as FC, general health, vitality, and mental health. DISCUSSION: TCC was proven beneficial to FC and QoL scores, which adds evidence for its practice by elderly men with low BMD. CONCLUSION: TCC training is effective in improving FC and QoL in elderly men with low BMD.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the perceived quality of life of older people living in the community and long-term care facilities, and correlate it with the presence of frailty. METHODS: This is a quantitative, analytical, cross-sectional study in which 136 older people were interviewed, half were living in the community and the other half were living in long-term care facilities. The Edmonton Frail Scale was used to identify frailty, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life – Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) and World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment for Older Persons (WHOQOL-OLD) questionnaires were used to measure quality of life. Analysis of variance and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for intragroup analyses. RESULTS: A greater proportion of older people living in long-term care facilities were frail. Perceived quality of life was better among people living in the community, according to both questionnaires, particularly in the domains social relations, environment, and death and dying. The worst scores were observed in the autonomy domain, particularly among older people living in long-term care facilities. In the majority of domains, older people with frailty had worse perceived quality of life scores. CONCLUSIONS: The absence of frailty favors a better perception of the quality-of-life domains, as does living in the community.

OBJECTIVE: To study the possible relation between quality of life and sociodemographic, anthropometric, functional and physical activity characteristics in older users of the Family Health Strategy in Porto Alegre-RS. METHODS: Cross-sectional and analytical study with older subjects (≥ 60 years). Data were prospectively collected in a random sample of 30 health units. The following variables were analyzed: sociodemographic (age, marital status, education); anthropometric (weight, height, body mass index); functional (walking speed, handgrip strength, Sit/Stand test). The Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and the Minnesota Physical Activity and Leisure Questionnaire (level of physical activity) were applied. Logistic Regression (Backward Conditional Method) was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Among the 577 older subjects evaluated (68.5 ± 6.4 years; 63.7% women), the majority (87%) presented high quality of life. In the initial multivariate (saturated) model, the following variables were considered as predictors of quality of life: gender, marital coexistence, time spent walking 10 m, higher Sit/Stand test score, handgrip strength, moderate, intense and total physical activity. The final model (6 steps) consisted of four variables: cohabitation, higher Sit/Stand test score, higher handgrip strength and engagement in intense physical activity. CONCLUSION: As observed, a high quality of life was related to older people who lived with a partner, presented higher upper and lower limb strength, and spent more time in the practice of intense physical activity.

The ‘leitmotif’ of the compact city has become a widely embraced template for sustainable urban development. Particularly infill and redevelopment areas, as well as many planned new settlements, have been built following the planning principles of urban compaction. Numerous positive effects are attributed to high-density settlements such as more efficient use of infrastructure and less reliance on automobile travel. Planning law and policies, in Germany as well as other countries around the world, regularly strive to advance high-density developments, but it is by no means clear whether the prescribed densities in planning policies actually lead to vibrant and healthy places which fulfill the expectations of their inhabitants with regards to their quality of life. The study aims to analyze the relation between binding land-use plans in Germany and individual perceptions of urban density through a case study-based survey. This paper contributes to providing new information on achieving compact urban form and quality of life in new urban quarters by analyzing the change of densities over the past three decades in ‘large’ urban developments across Germany, by an in-depth assessment of planned and built densities within an archetypal urban extension and finally by contrasting these ‘objective’ figures and findings with the ‘subjective’ feelings of inhabitants. For sources of information, this paper draws from literature, surveys and empirical analyses as well as desktop-studies.

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) has proposed to monitor intrinsic capacity (IC) in the older population as a public health strategy through the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) program. Although the program has been developed based on solid concepts, scientific evidence on its practical applicability is still scarce. Objectives: To evaluate IC in Brazilian older adults, its progress over time, and its association with sociodemographic and health factors and outcomes. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the WHO/ICOPE screening tool. Methods: This is a prospective multicenter cohort study with a 36-month follow-up. We will recruit 3838 people aged ≥ 60 years, registered in the health care units included in the study by the participating centers. We will collect sociodemographic and health data and will administer tools to assess IC domains, both those provided for in the ICOPE screening tool and the sequence of confirmatory assessments provided for in the program. Participants will be reassessed every 6 months for 36 months. Expected results: To establish the profile of IC in the study population and to understand its progress and the variables associated with the clinical outcomes of interest. To reveal the diagnostic and psychometric properties of the WHO/ICOPE screening tool. The project is funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Relevance: Understanding the potential use of the ICOPE public health strategy proposed by the WHO within the scope of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) by integrating several research centers in the field of Geriatrics and Gerontology throughout Brazil.

Abstract Background Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder with a wide range of clinical manifestations, notably neurocutaneous features, that can lead to emotional and physical consequences. Objectives This study assessed the influence of sociodemographic factors and clinical features of the disease on the quality of life of Brazilian individuals with NF1. Methods This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 101 individuals with NF1 using the Brazilian version of the Impact of NF1 on Quality of Life Questionnaire (INF1-QoL), a form with information on sociodemographic characteristics, and an NF1 visibility self-evaluation scale. The relationship between variables was evaluated through statistical testing, and the significance level was defined as 0.05. Results The study included 101 adults with NF1 aged 18 to 59 years, with a mean age of 35.54 years (±9.63) and a female predominance (n = 84, 83.17%). The mean total INF1-QoL score was 10.62 (±5.63), with a median of 10, minimum value of 0, and maximum of 31 points. Two characteristics of the participants were significantly associated with the quality of life: educational level (p = 0.003) and familial history of NF1 (p = 0.019). There was a statistically significant correlation between the INF1-QoL score and the degree of disease visibility (rho = 0.218; p = 0.028). Study limitations Cross-sectional study, conducted with a convenience sample and using self-reported measures. Conclusions The findings support the significant impact of NF1 on quality of life. The authors recommend multidisciplinary follow-up for patients, with adherence to anticipatory clinical care measures, adequate pain control, psychological assistance, and genetic counseling.

The promotion of decent work plays a central role in the transformation of tourism into a sustainable activity. The literature on this topic has multiplied, but it is imperative to pay more attention to workers in the potentially most vulnerable sectors, such as those without employment contracts and without formal higher education. The aim of this study on independent workers in tourism is to investigate how they perceive their work as decent and to analyze their quality of life. In addition, the study aims to analyze the mediating effect of career adaptability on the relationship between decent work and quality of life. The sample consists of 228 tourism workers in Portugal, mainly women, aged between 19 and 71 years. The results support the hypothesis that decent work can improve the quality of life of workers in the tourism industry. They also show that decent work is associated with a greater likelihood that workers are able and feel confident to adapt to changing tasks, to engage in continuous training and to manage their careers, which has a positive impact on their quality of life. The importance of prioritizing decent work and psychosocial resources to cope with the changing working and working conditions of the independent workers in the tourism sector in Portugal is discussed.
