Abstract

In this paper I contrast two systematically different patterns of acting in the world via the concepts of enframing and poiesis. Enframing is the usual stance of dualistic domination that we can associate with the Anthropocene, and I focus here on the contrast class, poiesis. To bring out its key features I discuss a form of natural farming developed in Japan by Masanobu Fukuoka, emphasising the way in which Fukuoka’s poetic approach foregrounds the performative back and forth with nature that I call a dance of agency. I review Fukuoka’s critique of the usefulness of modern science and argue instead that strands of traditional eastern philosophy help us to grasp the poetic alternative.

Abstract

Given the breadth of the ideas of the Austrian School of Economics and the numerous lengthy treatises across which those ideas are scattered, it is difficult to recommend an introductory text that conveys its definingcharacteristics. However, in this regard, Murray N. Rothbard’s rarely discussed Preface to Ludwig von Mises’s book Theory and History possesses considerable untapped potential. The Preface’s merits as an introductory reading stem not only from its persuasive summary of the praxeological method and the core arguments in its favor, amongst other distinguishing characteristics of the Austrian School, but also from its brevity and Rothbard’s stilistic clarity, which make it incredibly accessible to newcomers to Austrian ideas.

Os artigos desta coletânea, escritos por estudiosos brasileiros, examinam tópicos relacionados à língua(gem) com base na teoria da complexidade. Originalmente publicado em 2009 pela Faculdade de Letras da UFMG, o livro foi reeditado em 2011, pela Pontes, em um formato atraente. Oito dos onze artigos se inserem na área dos estudos de linguística aplicada e abrangem vários temas; os outros três tratam de questões teóricas sobre complexidade, linguagem e a relação entre os dois. Os organizadores estudam a abordagem da complexidade aplicada à linguística há mais de dez anos. O que há em comum entre os vários autores desta coletânea é a aplicação da perspectiva da complexidade ao estudo da linguagem, aprendizagem e ensino; mas cada autor a aplica a partir de distintos conceitos teóricos e metodológicos provenientes dos campos da linguística aplicada e da educação

Abstract

This book is a collection of articles dealing with the phonology and dialectology of Wichí (referred to in the past as Mataco) and Mapuzungun (also called Mapudungun or Mapuche), two unrelated Amerindian languages of South America. Published by the Universidad Nacional de La Pampa, it is the end result of a three-year project funded by the Argentine government, the purpose of which was to study dialect variation in these languages. All of the authors are specialists in the indigenous languages of Argentina, and all but one are teachers or researchers at Argentine universities or research institutions. Adopting the “dynamic synchrony” approach of the French functionalist school as a methodological-theoretical perspective, the book pretends to give an overall view of the dialectical continua of the Argentine varieties of the languages under study and at the same time to provide some understanding of sociolinguistic variation and ongoing phonological change in both languages. The four articles on Wichí and the single article on Mapuzungun found in this volume, while falling short of constituting a systematic survey, make significant steps toward achieving these difficult and important goals.

9. Tattooing: profile and discourse of individuals with marks in the body

Abstract

FUNDAMENTOS: A tatuagem é um fenômeno atávico e difuso que suscita abordagem por diversos saberes. Sua utilização por grupos específicos como prisioneiros e pacientes psiquiátricos sempre a manteve associada a um caráter de estigma. OBJETIVOS: Buscar o discurso do tatuado acerca da discriminação e da construção de estigmas a partir da inscrição de marcas no corpo. MÉTODOS: Foram analisadas entrevistas de 42 indivíduos. RESULTADOS: O perfil obtido foi de maioria de mulheres; com duas a quatro tatuagens; com 23 anos ao fazê-las; com formação superior completa; que acham que era moda fazer tatuagens; que não referem nenhum fato marcante que os tenha levado a fazer o desenho; que classificam a dor como suportável; que afirmam que nunca se sentiram discriminados; que nunca esconderam sua tatuagem; que acham que a tatuagem é um atrativo sexual; que não veem a tatuagem como uma forma de resistência cultural; que deixariam de fazê-la se lhes trouxesse prejuízo profissional; que dizem não ter usado álcool quando fizeram o desenho; que afirmam não serem usuários habituais de drogas; que acham que a tatuagem é uma forma de se expressar e de se embelezar. CONCLUSÕES: Percebeu-se que existe uma diferença entre o discurso do tatuado e os seus atos, quanto ao contexto social, e verificou-se uma importante mudança no significado da prática para o tatuado. BACKGROUNDS: Tattooing is an atavist and diffuse phenomenon of interest to various areas of knowledge. Its practice by specific groups such as prisoners and psychiatric patients has turned it into a stigma. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the discourse of tattooed individuals about the discrimination and the construction of stigmas resulting from marks in the body. METHODS: 42 individuals were interviewed and the data were analyzed. RESULTS: The profile of the participants was as follows: most were women; with 2 to 4 tattoos; who were about 23 years old when they got their first tattoo; with an undergraduate degree; who viewed tattooing as a trend; who did not report any important fact that made them get a tattoo; who classified the pain of getting a tattoo as tolerable, who stated that never felt discriminated and never felt the need to hide the tattoos; who find that tattoos make them more sexually attractive; who do not view tattooing as a form of cultural resistance; who said they would not have done it if they believed it caused them professional problems; who stated that they were not drunk when they got the tattoos; who said they were not habitual drugs users, who believed that tattooing is a form of expression and aesthetic sense. CONCLUSION: A difference between the discourse of tattooed individuals and their acts was observed in relation to the social context. In addition, there has been an important shift in the meaning of the practice to tattooed individuals.

Abstract

Orientador: Angel Humberto Corbera Mori Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas. Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem Resumo: Xavante é uma língua da família Jê, falada por aproximadamente 13.000 indígenas que vivem no estado do Mato Grosso. O presente trabalho descreve a fonologia segmental desta língua, utilizando a abordagem fonêmica encontrada no livro Phonemics (PIKE 1971[1947]). Embora a fonologia do Xavante já tenha sido tratada por outros autores, a análise apresentada aqui contém uma variedade de observações e interpretações novas, apresentando soluções para alguns problemas que não foram resolvidos em estudos anteriores. O primeiro capítulo descreve a metodologia usada na pesquisa. Dados foram coletados através da utilização de publicações anteriores, que serviram como guia no desenvolvimento de questionários delineados para solicitar tipos específicos de dados lingüísticos. A pesquisa baseia-se em grande parte em dados solicitados a um informante, indivíduo alfabetizado em Xavante e em Português, que foram comparados com a fala de outras pessoas da mesma região dialetal. O capítulo 2 contém um breve sumário do contexto histórico e lingüístico do povo Xavante e uma revisão da literatura lingüística relevante, composta principalmente de trabalhos feitos por missionários do Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) e da Missão Salesiana de Mato Grosso, além da dissertação de Quintino (2000). O terceiro capítulo começa com um sumário da abordagem teórico-metodológica encontrada no livro Phonemics (1971[1947]) de Kenneth Pike. Esta abordagem foi escolhida em parte porque as análises anteriores da fonologia Xavante foram feitas a partir desta perspectiva, e os problemas fonológicos na língua podem ser claramente compreendidos quando vistos à luz das virtudes e limitações da abordagem Pikeana. Uma análise abrangente de todos os fonemas segmentais da língua é apresentada em seguida, com base na perspectiva de Pike e em trabalhos anteriores, além de dados e novas análises. Os fonemas /z,?,?/ e os segmentos de coda [p,m,b] e [j,~j] são discutidos em detalhe e interpretados de uma forma diferente dos autores anteriores. A estrutura silábica é também analisada do ponto de vista Pikeano. O capítulo 4 descreve a evolução dos três diferentes sistemas ortográficos atualmente usados entre os Xavantes, mostrando que algumas das dificuldades enfrentadas pelos criadores destas ortografias refletem problemas na análise fonológica da língua. O capítulo 5 apresenta uma análise original dos segmentos de coda em Xavante. Um aspecto problemático da abordagem de Pike, decorrente do pressuposto de que fonemas são entidades indivisíveis, é discutido neste capítulo, bem como as tentativas de Burgess (1971) e Quintino (2000) de utilizar abordagens teóricas alternativas para analisar as codas em Xavante. Em seguida, apresenta-se o argumento de que as duas codas possíveis na língua, manifestadas respectivamente pelo conjunto neutralizado [p,m,b] e os alofones [j,~j], representam dois segmentos fonológicos em contraste fonêmico na posição final da sílaba. O capítulo 6 resume criticamente o conteúdo dos capítulos anteriores e um apêndice trata dos problemas não resolvidos relacionados ao acento, ao alongamento de vogais e às alterações morfofonológicas Abstract: The present work reanalyzes the phonology of Xavante (Jê family, 13,000 speakers, Mato Grosso State, Brazil). Based on several previous analyses and the author's own fieldwork, the segmental phonology of the language is presented from the viewpoint of Pike's Phonemics. Syllable structure is defined with reference to the distribution of segments at phrase and morpheme boundaries. The phonological problems confronted by the creators of a spelling system for the language are also described. The distributional analysis of the syllable codas in the language is used to illustrate the problems with Pike's interpretation of neutralization. The attempts by Burgess (1971) and Quintino (2000) to use alternative theoretical approaches to analyze Xavante codas are discussed, and an original solution to the problem is presented. It is argued that the two possible codas in the language, manifested respectively by the neutralized group [p,b,m] and the allophones [j,~j], represent two phonological segments in phonemic contrast in syllable-final position. Abstract

Na presente disserta??o, teve-se como objeto de estudo a realidade do indiv?duo na pris?o, dando ?nfase aos poss?veis aspectos de viol?ncia e sofrimento ps?quico, inseridos no discurso do apenado. Por meio de um referencial psicodin?mico, buscou-se conhecer alguns dos fatores psicol?gicos vinculados ao comportamento violento, sem, contudo, desconsiderar outros aspectos importantes para o entendimento do tema, como os sociais e os biol?gicos. Fez-se, tamb?m, uma breve revis?o bibliogr?fica a respeito da Institui??o Prisional, com suas m?ltiplas formas de viol?ncia, que acabam por refor?ar as caracter?sticas anteriormente referidas. Foram realizadas dez entrevistas, com detentos que cumpriam pena privativa de liberdade num estabelecimento carcer?rio de regime semi-aberto. Estas entrevistas foram interpretadas ? luz de um referencial te?rico psicanal?tico, para uma aproxima??o inicial. Os dados obtidos confirmam a hip?tese de que o sujeito que comete um delito manifesta a viol?ncia no ato il?cito, reedita e vivencia, na execu??o criminal, tantas outras formas de viol?ncia e sofrimento ps?quico. Abstract

FUNDAMENTOS: A tatuagem é um fenômeno atávico e difuso que suscita abordagem por diversos saberes. Sua utilização por grupos específicos como prisioneiros e pacientes psiquiátricos sempre a manteve associada a um caráter de estigma. OBJETIVOS: Buscar o discurso do tatuado acerca da discriminação e da construção de estigmas a partir da inscrição de marcas no corpo. MÉTODOS: Foram analisadas entrevistas de 42 indivíduos. RESULTADOS: O perfil obtido foi de maioria de mulheres; com duas a quatro tatuagens; com 23 anos ao fazê-las; com formação superior completa; que acham que era moda fazer tatuagens; que não referem nenhum fato marcante que os tenha levado a fazer o desenho; que classificam a dor como suportável; que afirmam que nunca se sentiram discriminados; que nunca esconderam sua tatuagem; que acham que a tatuagem é um atrativo sexual; que não veem a tatuagem como uma forma de resistência cultural; que deixariam de fazê-la se lhes trouxesse prejuízo profissional; que dizem não ter usado álcool quando fizeram o desenho; que afirmam não serem usuários habituais de drogas; que acham que a tatuagem é uma forma de se expressar e de se embelezar. CONCLUSÕES: Percebeu-se que existe uma diferença entre o discurso do tatuado e os seus atos, quanto ao contexto social, e verificou-se uma importante mudança no significado da prática para o tatuado.BACKGROUNDS: Tattooing is an atavist and diffuse phenomenon of interest to various areas of knowledge. Its practice by specific groups such as prisoners and psychiatric patients has turned it into a stigma. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the discourse of tattooed individuals about the discrimination and the construction of stigmas resulting from marks in the body. METHODS: 42 individuals were interviewed and the data were analyzed. RESULTS: The profile of the participants was as follows: most were women; with 2 to 4 tattoos; who were about 23 years old when they got their first tattoo; with an undergraduate degree; who viewed tattooing as a trend; who did not report any important fact that made them get a tattoo; who classified the pain of getting a tattoo as tolerable, who stated that never felt discriminated and never felt the need to hide the tattoos; who find that tattoos make them more sexually attractive; who do not view tattooing as a form of cultural resistance; who said they would not have done it if they believed it caused them professional problems; who stated that they were not drunk when they got the tattoos; who said they were not habitual drugs users, who believed that tattooing is a form of expression and aesthetic sense. CONCLUSION: A difference between the discourse of tattooed individuals and their acts was observed in relation to the social context. In addition, there has been an important shift in the meaning of the practice to tattooed individuals.
