An analysis of the situation of Literary Studies in Brazil shows that the richness of its diversification has not resulted in a peaceful coexistence of its scholars. Contrary to the explanations usually used, the article proposes to investigate the theoretical reasons for the polarization of Literary Studies, starting from the desire to take on a theoretical problem internal to the discipline. In their paradoxical aspect, theories of literature, whatever they may be, define their object of study through an implicit or explicit normative discourse. The article suggests that this paradoxical aspect can be reversed by using the tools of hermeneutics: circle, paradigm, conflict. Finally, based on the idea of the conflict of interpretations and with the support of Paul Ricœur's critical hermeneutics, it concludes that it is possible to better understand and perhaps overcome the current polarization of Literary Studies.
