This study aimed to assess oviposition of Panonychus ulmi (Koch, 1936) (Acari: Tetranychidae) in response of conspecific and heterospecific mites cues on apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh: Rosaceae). The oviposition of P. ulmi was measured on apple tree leaves with the presence of webs, eggs, and other cues of phytophagous mites (Aculus schlechtendali (Nalepa, 1890) (Acari: Eriophyidae), P. ulmi, Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1936 (Acari: Tetranychidae), and Tetranychus ludeni Zacher, 1913 (Acari: Tetranychidae)). The presence of conspecific webs and cues increased the oviposition of P. ulmi, while the presence of A. schlechtendali and T. urticae webs and eggs and A. schlechtendali cues decreased oviposition. The oviposition increases in the presence of conspecifics suggesting that P. ulmi performs better in environments without heterospecific mites. On the other hand, the P. ulmi decreases in oviposition in presence of heterospecific mite cues suggesting a potential competitive displacement of tetranychid by eriophyid mites.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted in a commercial apple orchard (Malus domestica) with high woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum) incidence, which is highly harmful to apple culture and infects the trunk, branch, roots, shoot, and fruit. Although the fungus Beauveria bassiana is widely reported as a control agent, there is no evidence of its control action against this pest. This case study was conducted under natural infestation conditions to evaluate the effective action of B. bassiana in E. lanigerum nymph mortality and aimed to evaluate the control potential of E. lanigerum treated with different formulation doses based on B. bassiana strain ICBBb252. The experimental unit consisted of ten plants in four randomized blocks, where one colony per plant was previously marked in an orchard (2500 plants/ha). The treatments consisted of applying the formulate in 100, 200, and 300 mL/ha dosages at a 109 spore/mL concentration and one control group; 10, 20, 30, and 40 days after application, the treatments were evaluated by counting the number of colonies alive. The control of woolly apple aphids by B. bassiana strain ICBBb252 was more effective at 200 and 300 mL/ha dosages and has no phytotoxic effects on plants.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the effect of harvest date on ‘Fuji Suprema’ apple quality, productivity, and economic profitability at harvest and after storage. Apples were harvested at the beginning of the commercial harvest window (H1), ten days after H1 (H2), and 22 days after H1 (H3) in the 2008 and 2009 growing seasons. A total of six samples with ~400 kg of fruit (~2,900 apples) each were picked at each growing season and harvest date, which were assessed at harvest (six subsamples of 100 fruit) and after 250 days of controlled atmosphere storage at 0.8 °C. The economic analysis considered fixed and variable production costs in the orchard and postharvest practices and the productivity of packaged apples (pack-out). Early harvested (H1) apples had greater flesh firmness, acidity, and lower soluble solids content than late-harvested apples (H3), both at harvest and after storage. Delaying harvest by 22 days increased the production by 10.2% due to increased fruit size but reduced the production by 3.6% due to severe sunburn and pre-harvest decay incidence. Late harvest also increased production losses due to decay by 4.4% and 10.9% during storage and shelf, respectively, but reduced production losses due to superficial scald by 17.1 to 22.7%. The net revenue (R$ ha-1) is higher for apples harvested late (H3, flesh firmness of 15.6 lb and starch index of 7.1) than for apples harvested early (H1 and H2) when the fruit is marketed soon after harvest (between April and May). However, for apples marketed after long-term storage, economic profitability is maximum when harvested at an intermediate maturity stage (H2, flesh firmness of 16.4 lb and starch index of 6).

Abstract This study was carried aiming to evaluate different hydrogen cyanamide concentrations (0.00%; 0.26%; 0.52% 0.78% and 1.04%) associated with (3%) mineral oil on the bud growth of the ‘Eva’ apple tree in a high-altitude tropical climate region in the state of Minas Gerais. Sprouting percentage, fruit set: ratio between number of fruits and number of flowers (%), number of fruits per plant and flowering phenology were evaluated during the 2020 and 2021 production cycles. Even not being submitted to temperatures below 7.2°C, the ‘Eva ‘ cultivar completed its production cycle in two subsequent years. Hydrogen cyanamide application combined with mineral oil promoted increased budbreak and flowering uniformity, in addition to anticipating the beginning of flowering of the ‘Eva’ apple cultivar.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate chemical thinning programs containing mixtures of different plant growth regulators, at low concentrations, applied to 'Fuji Mishima' apple trees at post-blossom, as well as to identify the most effective in reducing fruit set, decreasing the need of manual thinning, and improving fruit quality. Under a black anti-hail net, the apple trees were sprayed with the six following chemical thinning protocols (treatments): benzyladenine (BA) + gibberellin4+7 (GA) at full bloom (FB) and BA + carbaryl (CB) on fruitlets with a 15 mm diameter; BA + GA at FB and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) + CB on fruitlets with a 7 mm diameter; BA + GA at FB and BA + CB on fruitlets with a 15 mm diameter; ethephon (ETH) + CB on fruitlets with a 15 mm diameter and metamitron (MM) + ETH on fruitlets with a 20 mm diameter; and MM on fruitlets with a 7 mm diameter and MM on fruitlets with a 20 mm diameter. The treatments were compared with an untreated and a manual thinning control. The black net reduced photosynthetically active radiation in 22%. For 'Fuji Mishima' apples under a black anti-hail net, the chemical thinning program consisting of BA + GA (47 + 47 g a.i. ha-1) at FB, followed by BA + CB (80 + 288 g a.i. ha-1) on fruitlets with a 15 mm diameter, consistently reduces fruit set, requires less manual thinning, and improves fruit weight and size.

This study reports the presence and injuries caused by Tetranychus ludeni Zacher, 1913 (Acari: Tetranychidae) on apple tree seedlings (Malus domestica Borkh: Rosaceae) in nurseries in southern Brazil. The ability of the predatory mite of Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks, 1904) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to control T. ludeni infestations in this environment was also evaluated. Tetranychus ludeni infestation was observed during routine monitoring at the Acarology Laboratory of the University of Vale do Taquari - Univates, Lajeado, Rio Grande do Sul. Injuries were observed on the leaves, with gradual growth linked to the population increase of T. ludeni. In the control seedlings, there was defoliation and weakening of the plant. Phytoseiulus macropilis released on infested plants controlled the populations of this phytophagous mite. Fifty specimens of P. macropilis were released in each seedling. Tetranychus ludeni caused injuries to apple seedlings, while P. macropilis proved to be efficient in controlling this phytophagous mite.

O acúmulo de temperatura em graus-dia é um índice muito empregado para a determinação do ciclo de várias culturas e permite a estimativa do período de colheita. O objetivo do trabalho foi calcular a soma térmica dos cultivares de macieira entre a floração e a colheita para prever a data colheita em clima Cfb. As somas térmicas em graus-dias foram calculadas a partir das temperaturas máxima, mínima e média diárias, usando-se um valor de temperatura basal superior (TBS) de 35°C e valores de temperatura basal inferior (TBI) de 4,5°C. Nove cultivares, sobre dois porta-enxertos, M9 e M26, foram analisados. Os cultivares foram agrupados em classes de soma térmica e para cada classe simularam-se sete diferentes cenários, representando os decêndios de início da floração. Para a previsão da data de colheita foram gerados 28 mapas considerando quatro classes de somas térmicas: 1.750 GD (cultivares Imperatriz, Lis Gala e Monalisa), 1.850 GD (Condessa), 2.350 GD (Castel Gala e Daiane), 2.700 GD (Fuji Suprema e Baronesa). Os porta-enxertos não influenciaram na necessidade de soma térmica dos cultivares. As necessidades de soma térmicas dos cultivares, da floração à colheita, foram condizentes com a sequência de colheita observada, sendo o tamanho do ciclo determinado pelo número de graus-dias acumulados. A soma térmica dos cultivares pode ser utilizada para a previsão da data de maturação/colheita da macieira.

Este estudo teve como objeti vo avaliar parâmetros fí sico-químicos na polpa de maçãs ‘SCS443 Isadora’ armazenadas em câmara de frio comum (AA) por longo período de tempo. As frutas foram colhidas em 25/03/2020, tratadas com 1-Meti lciclopropeno (1-MCP), embaladas em caixas de 18kg por 575 dias em AA. As maçãs foram avaliadas (aos 575 dias em AA e aos 575 dias em AA + 7 dias de prateleira) quanto à fi rmeza de polpa, acidez total titulável, teor de sólidos solúveis totais e porcentagem de frutos com podridões. Os dados experimentais obtidos foram comparados aos dados históricos médios de 6 anos de maçãs ‘SCS443 Isadora’ recém-colhidas. Mesmo após 575 dias armazenadas, as maçãs ‘Isadora’ não apresentaram qualquer diminuição na firmeza de polpa. Já na acidez total titulável, houve redução significativa nas médias, independente da condição experimental aplicada às frutas em pós-colheita. Os teores de sólidos solúveis totais não apresentaram variação significativa, e o índice de podridões foi inferior a 5%, mesmo após 1,6 anos de armazenagem das frutas em AA. O cultivar de macieira ‘SCS443 Isadora’ apresenta alto potencial de armazenagem das suas maçãs sob atmosfera refrigerada (1 ± 1°C).

Este trabalho aborda esta cadeia produtiva cresceu e veio sendo organizada ao longo das décadas, bem como os problemas que vieram surgindo pela dependência de duas únicas cultivares. Também tem o propósito de alertar que o setor precisa criar estratégias inovadoras, e apontar algumas soluções que na atualidade já são possíveis de serem alcanças com os devidos investimentos.

This study analyzed the effect of rootstocks G.213, M.9 and Marubakaido with M.9 interstem of 30 and 20 cm (MB/M.9-30cm and MB/M.9-20cm) on postharvest quality, mineral composition and functional properties of 'Maxi Gala' apples. The evaluations was performed using fruits from a commercial orchard located in Vacaria, RS, Brazil. Fruits were stored for 135 and 147 days in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons, respectively, and analyzed one day after harvest and after cold storage (1.0±0.2 °C) followed by seven days in ambient condition. The mineral composition of fruits showed small and inconsistent differences between rootstocks. The MB/M.9-20cm provided higher total antioxidant activity and levels of total phenolic compounds in fruit peel than MB/M.9-30cm. For 2014/2015 season, soluble solids content at harvest was higher in fruits from trees with G.213 rootstock, not differing only from MB/M.9-30cm. In 2015/2016 season, G.213 and M.9 provided higher soluble solids content after storage compared to MB/M.9-30 cm and MB/M.9-20cm. G.213 rootstock anticipated fruit maturity compared to M.9 in 2014/2015 season. Other quality attributes of ‘Maxi Gala’ apples, at harvest and after cold storage, were similar between rootstocks G.213, M.9 and Maruba with M.9 interstem of 30 and 20cm.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes formulações de fosfitos para o controle do cancro europeu da macieira (CEM). No estudo in vitro os produtos foram incorporados em meio BDA (Batata-Dextrose-Ágar) e o desenvolvimento de Neonectria ditissima foi avaliado. Frutos e mudas de macieira foram feridos e, em seguida, foram tratados e inoculados com N. ditissima em laboratório e casa-de-vegetação, respectivamente. Plantas de macieira ‘Gala’ receberam cinco tratamentos com fosfitos em diferentes estágios fenológicos para proteção da infecção natural de N. ditissima a campo. Todos os fosfitos in vitro afetaram negativamente o desenvolvimento de N. ditissima. Os tratamentos fosetil al (51 e 30%), fosfito de potássio 0-40-20 (44 e 37%) e captana (30 e 13%) reduziram a incidência de podridões e diâmetro de lesões em frutos. Em casa-de-vegetação todos os tratamentos apresentaram altos índices de controle sobre a incidência do CEM (17 a 100%) e redução do tamanho de lesão (58 a 100%) com exceção ao fosetil al. Em condições de campo, todos os tratamentos reduziram o número de cancros (48 a 88%), com exceção ao fosetil al e o fosfito de potássio 0-40-20. Em suma, os fosfitos reduzem os sintomas do CEM a níveis comparáveis aos fungicidas padrões captana e fosetil al, embora a formulação e a marca comercial devam ser consideradas.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a concentração de nutrientes nas folhas e o rendimento de maçãs em função do uso da irrigação e da forma de aplicação de adubos ao solo (convencional sólida ou fertirrigação). O experimento foi conduzido na safra 2014/15 em um pomar instalado sobre um Cambissolo Húmico, em São Joaquim (SC), com o cultivar Kinkas. Os tratamentos foram: adubação sólida convencional (ASC); adubação sólida convencional + irrigação (ASC+I); fertirrigação (F); e fertirrigação + irrigação (F+I). Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com oito repetições. A necessidade e o tempo de irrigação foram determinados pela média das leituras dos tensiômetros instalados entre as unidades experimentais. Foram avaliados os teores de Ca, Mg, P e K no solo e nas folhas, os parâmetros de produtividade, sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável e firmeza de polpa. O número e a produtividade de frutos, assim como os atributos de solo, não foram afetados pelos tratamentos. Nas folhas, os teores de Ca foram maiores no tratamento com I+F em relação ao com ASC+I; para Mg, os maiores teores ocorreram nos tratamentos com ASC e ASC+I; para o K, os tratamentos com I+F e F foram os que apresentaram os maiores teores. A menor concentração de açúcares nos frutos ocorreu no tratamento com fertirrigação. Apesar de afetar a composição das folhas, a forma de aplicação dos adubos e a irrigação não afetaram a produtividade de maçãs.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the relationship among dry matter content (DMC) and maturity indexes at harvest and quality of ‘Gala’ apples after storage. Apple fruit of four ‘Gala’ strains produced on two rootstocks and three growing regions were used for experiments 1 and 2. For all experiments, fruit harvest maturity was assessed one day after harvest and stored fruit was assessed after removal from storage plus seven days at 22 °C. For experiment 1, fruit were harvested weekly along the final stages of growth and maturation on the tree. For experiment 2, fruit were harvested at commercial maturity and stored under a controlled atmosphere at 0.7 oC for 195 days. For experiment 3, fruit from two orchards were harvested at commercial maturity and stored in air at 1oC for 50, 110, or 194 days. DMC did not change during the final stages of fruit growth, however, there were significant changes in fruit firmness, starch index, and soluble solids content (SSC) during the same period. At the commercial harvest, fruit DMC showed high correlation with SSC, titratable acidity (TA) and firmness. DMC assessed at the commercial harvest also showed high correlation after storage with SSC and TA but not with firmness or flesh browning (FB). DMC decreased slightly during storage. The results show that DMC is not a reliable index to determine ‘Gala’ apple maturity at harvest, or to predict fruit firmness and FB after storage. However, DMC at harvest has potential to predict SSC and TA after storage, two important fruit quality traits. Fruit density at harvest showed utility to predict risk of flesh browning after storage.

Abstract This work evaluates how thermal regimes with constant or oscillating temperatures affect the onset and overcome of endodormancy in apple buds with low (‘Castel Gala’) and high (‘Royal Gala’) chilling requirements. Apple twigs were collected in Papanduva-SC orchards during the autumn/winter of 2010 and 2011, and submitted to constant (3°C) or cycling (3/15°C for 6/18h, 12/12h or 18/6h) temperatures for up to 1466 chilling hours (CH). Periodically, a portion of twigs in each treatment was transferred to 25°C, for budburst evaluation. An environmental stress in 2010 caused premature leaf fall on the field, reduced initial budburst in ‘Royal Gala’ samples and interfered with dormancy onset in both cultivars. Cycling temperature treatments with few CH/day decreased partially this effect, allowing buds to enter a dormancy state more efficiently. No significant stress was observed in the orchard in 2011, when dormancy evolution was similar in all thermal treatments, being induced with 54 and 123 CH and overcome with 363 and 662 CH for ‘Castel Gala’ and ‘Royal Gala’, respectively. Apparently, the manner in which apple bud dormancy is induced affects its depth and consequently the total number of chilling hours required to overcome it, making the onset phase fundamental in dormancy studies.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest spraying with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and ethephon on fruit maturation of 'Baigent' apple (Malus domestica) trees grown under black anti-hail nets. The treatments were: control; 125 mg L-1 AVG, sprayed 30 days before anticipated harvest time (DBAH); 120 mg L-1 ethephon 7 DBAH; 62.5 mg L-1 + 62.5 mg L-1 AVG 30 and 20 DBAH; and 62.5 mg L-1 + 62.5 mg L-1 AVG 30 and 20 DBAH + 120 mg L-1 ethephon 7 DBAH. Fruit were harvested in the commercial harvest of the control treatment (harvest 1) and 14 days later (harvest 2). Yellowing and loss of firmness were delayed by the treatments with AVG and accelerated by that with ethephon. AVG application in a single rate of 125 mg L-1 30 DBAH or in two split rates of 62.5 mg L-1 30 and 20 DBAH delays fruit maturation. The pre-harvest application of AVG in a single rate reduces the red color of the fruits, which is not affected by application in split rates, combined or not with ethephon, regardless of the date of harvest.

O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar o efeito da reaplicação dos indutores de brotação na floração, brotação e produção da macieira ‘Maxi Gala’. O experimento foi desenvolvido em pomar experimental localizado no município de Caçador, durante os ciclos de 2016/2017 a 2019/2020. Os tratamentos foram aplicados no estádio B e C e, os com reaplicação, de 7 a 14 dias após a primeira aplicação. Foram realizadas a avaliação da fenologia, brotação de gemas axilares e terminais, frutificação efetiva, produção por planta e massa média dos frutos. Os tratamentos aplicados no estádio B propiciaram um maior adiantamento dos eventos fenológicos em relação às aplicações no estádio C. A brotação das gemas axilares e dos terminais foi maior em todos os tratamentos com indutores de brotação em relação ao tratamento testemunha. Em alguns ciclos, a aplicação sequencial de indutores de brotação aumentou a brotação de gemas axilares e terminais em relação ao tratamento de uma única aplicação. A frutificação efetiva dos tratamentos com aplicação sequencial de indutores de brotação não foi reduzida em relação ao tratamento com uma única aplicação. Alguns tratamentos com reaplicação melhoraram a produtividade das macieiras. Na média, a reaplicação de indutores de brotação aumentou a massa média dos frutos.

O presente estudo analisa o aumento na lucratividade que o uso do Aminoethoxivinilglicine (AVG) traz para a cultura da macieira cultivar Imperial Gala. Quantificam-se os benefícios da redução na queda dos frutos, da ampliação do peso médio, da ampliação do período de colheita e do aumento do potencial de armazenagem dos frutos. Os resultados da análise mostram que o Retain se apresenta como uma nova tecnologia promissora, do ponto de vista do aumento da lucratividade, para o fruticultor.

Abstract The aim of this work was to verify the effectiveness of the reapplication of bud break producers on flowering, sprouting and production of ‘Fuji Suprema’ apple trees. The experiment was carried out in an experimental orchard located in the municipality of Caçador, SC, during 2016/2017 to 2019/2020 seasons. Treatments were applied at stages B and C, and those with reapplication, from 7 to 14 days after the first application. Phenology, axillary and terminal bud break, frui set, production per plant and average fruit mass were evaluated. Phenology was advanced in relation to control with the application of bud break promoters. However, treatments applied at stage B provided greater advance in relation to applications at stage C. In axillary and terminal bud break, all treatments were superior to control. In some seasons, the sequential application of bud break promoters increased bud sprouting compared to single application treatment. There is no reduction fruit set in treatments with sequential application in relation to single application. In plant production, sequential applications did not differ from single application. The average fruit mass was not altered by the sequential application of bud break promoters.

Spraying of dormancy-breaking chemicals is a mandatory procedure to produce temperate fruits in low-chill regions. Although hydrogen cyanamide (HC) + mineral oil (MO) show efficiency enhancing budburst, the usage of HC is restricted in some countries due to its toxicity. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the efficiency of spraying different dormancy-breaking agents on ‘Eva’ apple tree buds, under the conditions of the Depressão Central of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Different doses of Erger® (0, 2, 3, 4, 5%) + 3% Ca(NO3)2 were tested and compared with MO (4%) or MO (4%) + HC (0.6%). Budburst rate of apical and axillary buds, physiological alterations in buds, return bloom, yield and fruit weight were evaluated. Erger® treatments efficiently enhanced budburst, with a result equivalent to HC + MO treatment. The budburst rate increased as the Erger® dose increased, also causing the increment of the return bloom in the following year. However, doses of 4 and 5% caused the death of shoots. The activity of the peroxidases and the content of H2O2 in the buds were affected by the treatments. Yield and fruit mass were different in response to treatments, although the effect varied between years. Erger® + Ca(NO3)2 spraying increase budburst in apical and axillary buds of ‘Eva’ apple tree in low-chill conditions and doses up to 3% of the commercial product do not cause toxicity.

Em 2004, a produção brasileira de maçãs ficou em torno de 980.000t. Mais de 70% desta fruta foi produzida em regime de frio hibernal insuficiente para assegurar boa produtividade e boa qualidade de frutos. A maior parte provém de cultivares que requerem mais frio hibernal que o disponível em altitudes inferiores a 1.200m na Região Sul do Brasil. A deficiência de frio hibernal afeta diretamente a brotação, a floração, a qualidade dos frutos e, conseqüentemente, a produtividade. A cultivar Castel Gala necessita pouco frio hibernal e apresenta maturação dos frutos muito antes da colheita da ‘Gala’. Esta nova cultivar floresce de 20 a 25 dias antes da ‘Gala’ e tem coloração da epiderme similar à desta, assim como sabor e textura de polpa. Embora a maturação seja antecipada, os frutos da cultivar Castel Gala apresentam capacidade de conservação semelhante à da ‘Imperial Gala’. Estas características, aliadas à baixa necessidade de frio, mostram que esta nova cultivar é uma boa opção para regiões de invernos menos frios que os recomendados para a cultivar Gala e Fuji.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a morfologia interna e externa de gemas dormentes em ramos de um ano e dois anos em macieiras cultivar Imperial Gala durante o outono e inverno, cultivadas em localidade de baixa ocorrência de frio. Os ramos com gemas dormentes foram coletados em sete datas distintas no ano de 2000 (19/4, 10/5, 31/5, 21/6, 12/7, 2/8 e 23/8) e levados ao laboratório para análise. Um grupo de ramos foi submetido ao teste biológico de estacas de nós isolados para monitoramento da intensidade de dormência nas gemas em cada data de coleta. Apesar de existirem diferenças na intensidade de dormência em cada período, não foram detectadas diferenças morfológicas internas e externas nas gemas entre as datas de coleta. Há diferenças na morfologia entre gemas de um ano e dois anos devido à formação de um primórdio caulinar no interior das gemas de dois anos, perfeitamente ligado ao ramo no qual a gema está inserida. Gemas de dois anos têm potencial de brotação e formação de novos ramos na planta se as condições favoráveis lhes são propiciadas por meio do manejo das plantas.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as exigências térmicas para a brotação de seis cultivares de macieira, duas comerciais (Gala e Fuji) e quatro com potencial para produção comercial no Sul do Brasil (Condessa, Imperatriz, Daiane e Baronesa). Ramos medindo de 20 a 25cm de comprimento foram submetidos a 1.150 unidades de frio e, em seguida, a temperaturas de 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25oC, em câmara de crescimento, para ser avaliado o número de dias para brotação e calculado o índice de desenvolvimento, a temperatura base e os graus-dia necessários para a brotação. O aumento de temperaturas, de 5 a 25oC, após a superação da necessidade em frio reduz o número de dias para brotação, independentemente da cultivar. A temperatura-base para cálculo dos graus-dia varia com a cultivar, porém não apresenta relação com as necessidades de frio da cultivar. O índice de desenvolvimento aumenta com a temperatura após a superação da dormência. A exigência de calor para a brotação é estável nas temperaturas entre 10 e 25oC. A necessidade de calor independe da necessidade de frio das cultivares.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar o nível de infestação e a época de ocorrência do ácaro vermelho-europeu (Panonychus ulmi) nas cultivares de macieira Gala e Fuji. O estudo foi conduzido em um pomar convencional, situado na Epagri/Estação Experimental de Caçador, SC. As amostragens do ácaro foram realizadas quinzenalmente, durante o período vegetativo, de novembro de 2005 a dezembro de 2006. Utilizaram se dez plantas de cada cultivar, escolhidas aleatoriamente. Em cada planta foram coletadas dez folhas, totalizando cem folhas por cultivar em cada amostragem. Na ‘Fuji’, o ácaro foi observado em todo o período vegetativo, enquanto que em ‘Gala’ não houve ocorrência em novembro e dezembro de 2006. A infestação média do ácaro em ‘Gala’ e em ‘Fuji’ foi, respectivamente, de 2,78 e 14,24 ovos/folha, 0,37 e 1 imaturo/folha e 0,49 e 1,15 adulto/ folha. Verificou-se que o ácaro-vermelho-europeu foi mais freqüente e abundante em folhas de ‘Fuji’.

A macieira, por ser uma espécie alógama, necessita de polinização cruzada para assegurar boas produções comerciais. Isto requer a associação de cultivares polinizadoras compatíveis e com época de floração coincidente com a produtora. Este estudo teve por objetivo identificar cultivares de macieira como polinizadoras eficientes para a ‘Castel Gala’ e a ‘Condessa’. Foram realizados dois ensaios. No primeiro foram testadas as cultivares Eva, Condessa e Princesa, todas de baixa necessidade de frio, e a seleção Iapar 680-28 como polinizadoras da ‘Castel Gala’. No segundo, foram usadas a ‘Castel Gala’ e a ‘Princesa’ como polinizadoras da ‘Condessa’. Para a ‘Castel Gala’, obteve-se melhor frutificação efetiva e maior número de sementes por fruto quando polinizada com a ‘Eva’ e a ‘Condessa’. As melhores coincidências de floração foram observadas entre a ‘Castel Gala’ e as polinizadoras ‘Condessa’, ‘Princesa’ e ‘Iapar 680-28’. Para polinizar a ‘Condessa’, a ‘Castel Gala’ foi mais eficiente que a ‘Princesa’, tanto em frutificação efetiva quanto em número de sementes por fruto.

Testaram-se quatro modelos de armadilhas contendo como atrativo suplementar raiz de tajujá (Cayaponia tayuya), com o objetivo de verificar o modelo mais eficaz na captura de vaquinhas (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae). O estudo foi conduzido em um pomar de produção orgânica de maçãs na Epagri/Estação Experimental de Caçador, em Santa Catarina, durante as floradas dos anos agrícolas 2005/06 e 2006/07. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com oito repetições e quatro tratamentos, totalizando 32 armadilhas. Nas quatro armadilhas foram capturadas 16.404 vaquinhas, sendo a maioria do gênero Diabrotica. A armadilha de solo, confeccionada com lata de óleo para motor, colorida de amarelo na parte interior e cortada ao meio longitudinalmente, proporciona maior captura de vaquinhas em pomar de macieira.

Frequentes falhas de manejo da Sarna da Macieira (SDM) nos pomares, associadas aos problemas ambientais devido a utilização incorreta dos fungicidas, impulsionam o desenvolvimento de medidas alternativas. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a possibilidade de uso dos bioestimulantes de forma isolada ou em mistura com fungicidas para o manejo da SDM. Para isto plantas de macieira ‘Gala’ foram pulverizadas de setembro a novembro dos anos de 2014 a 2018, entre um e dois dias antes de um período chuvoso com diferentes classes de bioestimulantes (aminoácidos, fosfitos, regulador de crescimento, fertilizantes foliares a base de extrato vegetal, algas e minerais). Alguns bioestimulantes testados reduziram a incidência da SDM em folhas e/ou frutos, bem como melhoraram os parâmetros de qualidade, no entanto este efeito foi dependente da classe de bioestimulante utilizado, forma que foi aplicado (isolado ou mistura), e ciclo da macieira avaliado.

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the physiological and biochemical parameters of apple trees under different irrigation water depths in a semiarid region of Brazil. The experiment had a split-plot randomized block design. Irrigation levels (60, 80, 100, and 120% of the reference evapotranspiration - ET0) and two apple cultivars (Julieta and Princesa) were analysed in the experimental plots and the phenological stages (vegetative, flowering and fruiting) were analysed in the experimental subplots. The physiological characteristics evaluated included the chlorophyll index, relative water content, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, internal CO2 concentration, leaf temperature and instant carboxylation efficiency. The biochemical characteristics evaluated included the leaf contents of reducing sugars, total soluble sugars, and non-reducing sugars and proteins. The best biochemical responses were observed in the Princesa cultivar under 80% ET0 during the flowering and vegetative stages and under 120% ET0 during the fruiting stage. The best physiological responses for all phenological stages were observed under irrigation levels of 120% ET0 for both cultivars. The cv. Princesa demonstrated osmotic adjustment under water stress conditions during the phenological stages evaluated.

A superação da dormência das gemas em macieira ocorre após um acúmulo de horas de frio (HF) no outono/inverno. Caso o ambiente não supra a necessidade de frio das plantas, insumos indutores de brotação para a superação da dormência são empregados. Avaliou-se a superação da dormência de gemas de macieira combinando o efeito do frio e o uso de indutor de brotação. Utilizou-se o indutor de brotação padrão para macieira (Dormex® 1% + Óleo Mineral 4% - D/OM) na ‘Royal Gala’ (RG) após a variedade receber diferentes tempos de frio. Estacas de ‘RG’ foram coletadas em abril/2016 e aplicado o D/OM, após 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 e 600 HF. Um tratamento controle foi incluso, com frio constante de 7,2 ºC. No tratamento controle, a ‘RG’ superou a dormência com 549 HF, após análise de regressão (para alcance de 70% de brotação). Quando testado D/OM combinado com frio, os produtos não foram eficientes para superação da dormência após 0, 100 e 200 HF, atingindo aproximadamente 50% de brotação. Porém, quando o D/OM foi aplicado após 300, 400, 500 e 600 HF, as plantas responderam com alta taxa de brotação (acima de 90%). Neste caso, a superação da dormência (70% de brotação) com D/OM foi atingida após 255 HF. Conclui-se que o D/OM terá efeito somente se o ambiente suprir 46,4% ou mais da necessidade de frio do genótipo a campo.

Visando desenvolver um modelo de previsão da mancha da gala (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides), em casa de vegetação, em mudas de macieira com apenas uma haste, da cultivar Gala, foram inoculadas com suspensão de 1 x 106 conídios/ml de C. gloeosporioides e depois mantidas em câmara de inoculação a 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 e 26ºC (> 98% de umidade relativa do ar, no escuro) durante 8, 10, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72 e 96h. Foram, então, transferidas para uma sala de crescimento (14h de fotófase) nas mesmas temperaturas da inoculação. Pela interação entre o período de molhamento foliar e as diferentes temperaturas foi possível estabelecer uma superfície de resposta como modelo para estimar a severidade da mancha da gala, cuja equação resultante é: Y = -91,497 + (7,851 x T) + (0,243 x PMF) + (-0,177 x T x T) + (0,021 x T x PMF) + (-0,002 x PMF x PMF), onde T = temperatura (ºC) e PMF = período de molhamento foliar (h).

A validade dos catálogos de escalas de cores de fundo (cor da região menos avermelhada da epiderme) desenvolvidos para maçãs ‘Gala’ e ‘Fuji’ pela Epagri foi analisada neste estudo pela significância da correlação entre a variação dos índices de cores de fundo (estimados pelos catálogos de cores) e os demais índices de maturação. As mudanças da cor de fundo em maçãs ‘Gala’, ‘Royal Gala’ e ‘Fuji’ estimadas por catálogo de cores (escala 1 a 5) se relacionaram significativamente com as mudanças da cor de fundo determinada por colorímetro, da firmeza da polpa, do índice de amido e do teor de sólidos solúveis totais. Os menores coeficientes de correlação ocorreram entre a cor de fundo estimada pelo catálogo de cores e a acidez titulável, produção de etileno e intensidade de cor vermelha, especialmente em ‘Fuji’. A variação da firmeza de polpa em função da variação da cor de fundo se ajustou a modelos lineares ou quadráticos. Esses modelos foram usados para estimar os índices de cor de fundo do catálogo de cores correspondentes ao período ideal de colheita, os quais variaram de 2,8 a 4,1 para ‘Gala’, 2,5 a 3,7 para ‘Royal Gala’ e 2,2 a 3,6 para ‘Fuji’.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da aplicação de Retain®, em associação a outros agroquímicos utilizados no manejo da macieira, sobre a maturação e queda pré-colheita de maçãs ‘Imperial Gala’. Durante os ciclos 2006/07 e 2007/08, aos 7 dias antes do ponto de colheita foram aplicados os seguintes tratamentos: 1) testemunha; 2) Retain® 800g/ha; 3) Retain® 800g/ha + Captan 500PM 4.000g/ha; 4) Retain® 800g/ha + Cercobin 700WP 1.500g/ha; 5) Retain® 800g/ha + Sumithion 500CE 1.500ml/ha; 6) Retain® 800g/ha + cloreto de cálcio 6000g/ha. Não foram verificados sintomas de fitotoxidade em nenhum dos tratamentos avaliados. A aplicação de Retain® associado a alguns dos agroquímicos utilizados no manejo da macieira apresentaram desempenho semelhante à aplicação isolada de Retain® quanto ao controle da maturação e à queda pré-colheita de maçãs ‘Imperial Gala’, sobretudo em períodos inferiores a 23 dias após o ponto de colheita.

A produção comercial das maçãs ‘Gala’ e ‘Fuji’ no Sul do Brasil sem o uso de produtos para quebra da dormência, na maioria dos anos, só é viável nas altitudes acima de 1.200m. Nas regiões de menor altitude, onde a produção comercial de maçãs é importante, esses cultivares só produzem comercialmente mediante tratamento químico com agentes indutores da brotação, os quais, embora efcientes, contribuem para o aumento dos custos de produção. O presente estudo teve por objetvo verifcar o efeito de diferentes porta-enxertos sobre a brotação da copa dos cultvares Gala e Fuji no Meio-Oeste Catarinense, a 1.000m de alttude. Observou-se que os porta-enxertos da série G testados induziram melhor brotação à copa desses cultivares do que os porta-enxertos tradicionais M.9 e MM.111.

Os turboatomizadores produzem corrente de ar que carrega as gotas pulverizadas auxiliando sua distribuição, contudo, muitas gotas são perdidas para o ambiente. O uso de cabines pode reduzir a exposição do operador. Foram instalados experimentos visando avaliar a exposição dérmica e respiratória potenciais e a eficiência de isolamento da cabine em aplicações de agrotóxicos em pomares de maçã. A calda foi composta por água mais os produtos Mancozeb e Captan (3,0 L ha-1) e Fenitrotion (1,5 L ha-1). Estimou-se a exposição dérmica com uso de absorvente íntimo feminino afixados na vestimenta do operador e no interior da cabine. A determinação analítica foi feita por Cromatografia Líquida em cromatógrafo, com detector de UV-VIS e arranjo específico de diodos. Os analitos foram extraídos por ultrassom, conforme determinação da NBR 10004 e descrito pela Agência de Proteção Ambiental dos Estados Unidos da América. Não foram detectados os comprimentos de onda referentes aos produtos testados até o limite de 200µg kg-1, indicando haver boa vedação e isolamento do operador dentro das cabines testadas.

Abstract Apple is considered a functional food, since it presents considerable contribution in the supply of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and its consumption is related to the prevention of various diseases. However, most cultivars released in recent years have been poorly studied regarding their nutritional properties. The aim of this work was to quantify mineral contents in the skin and flesh, of apple cultivars with potential production in southern Brazil. The apple cultivars evaluated were ‘Fuji Suprema’, ‘Castel Gala’, ‘Lisgala’, ‘Monalisa’, ‘Luiza’, ‘Daiane’, ‘Venice’, ‘Elenise’ and M.10-09 advanced selection, in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. Among evaluated minerals, considering consumption of a fruit of 115 g with skin (except carpel and seeds), potassium supplies high percentage of recommended daily intake, followed by phosphorus and magnesium. The calcium content in apples presents low contribution to the recommended daily intake. Due to the higher concentrations of minerals in skin in comparison to flesh, the consumption of whole fruit increases the percentage of minerals ingested. In addition, the evaluated minerals showed significant differences as a function of cultivar. ‘Monalisa’ cultivar, in the flesh portion, stood out due to the high phosphorus and calcium content, 204.1 and 36.5 mg kg-1 (2017/2018) and 305.6 and 43.8 mg kg-1 (2018/2019), respectively. ‘Fuji Suprema’, in both harvest seasons, stood out due to the high potassium contents in skin (1073.8 mg kg-1) and flesh (1223.7 mg kg-1) in 2017/2018 and in flesh (1547.3 mg kg-1) in 2018/2019 and magnesium in flesh (122.4 mg kg-1) in 2017/2018 and in skin (231.2 mg kg-1) and flesh (62.4 mg kg-1) in 2018/2019.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of using ammonium thiosulfate as a chemical blossom thinner in 'Maxi Gala' apple (Malus domestica) trees and its effects on fruit quality. The experiment was carried out in an experimental orchard in the Southern Brazil, in a randomized complete block design, with five replicates. Ammonium thiosulfate was sprayed on the apple trees at the full bloom stage, at 0, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5%. Evaluations were performed for the effects on crop load, fruit set, yield efficiency, and fruit quality parameters such as weight, shape, total soluble solids, seed number, flesh firmness, color, and russeting occurrence. Ammonium thiosulfate at 2.5% is effective to reduce crop load and to improve fruit quality. The thinning effect of ammonium thiosulfate is not dependent on the weather conditions during the crop season. The rate of 3.5% of ammonium thiosulfate causes overthinning and does not result in the improvement of fruit quality.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of rosemary, cinnamon, citronella grass, and clove essential oils on the in vitro growth of Penicillium expansum, on the diameter of blue mold lesions, and on the physical and chemical attributes of 'Fuji' apples stored under refrigeration for different periods of time. The compositions of the essential oils were determined, and their effects on the growth inhibition, number, and viability of fungal spores in vitro were evaluated at 0, 100, and 1,000 μL L-1 oil concentrations. At postharvest, evaluations were performed for fruit treated with 0, 50, 100, and 500 μL L-1 essential oil and kept under refrigeration for 30 days, and for fruit treated with 0, 100, and 500 μL L-1 oil and kept under refrigeration for two days. The essential oils - eucalyptol (rosemary), eugenol (cinnamon), citronellal (citronella), and eugenol (clove) - reduce the growth, number, and viability of P. expansum spores 24 hours after the induction to germination, as well as the diameter of blue mold lesions in apples, except for citronella oil at 500 μL L-1 after 30 days of cold storage. There are no changes in the physicochemical attributes of apples, treated with different concentrations of the oils after refrigeration for five months, followed by seven days at room temperature.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate different pruning times, performed before or after natural leaf drop, regarding their effects on the yield of 'Royal Gala' apple (Malus domestica) trees. The experiment was carried out in Vacaria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on seven-year-old trees in four harvests from 2008/2009 to 2011/2012, using a randomized block design. The following pruning times were tested: 46 days before leaf drop (DBLD); 25 DBLD; 5 DBLD; 15 days after leaf drop (DALD); 36 DALD; 55 DALD; and 75 DALD. All pruning times before natural leaf drop reduced yield per tree and fruit set. Among the pruning times before leaf drop, 46 DBLD resulted in the lowest yield. Pruning performed after natural leaf drop, still during dormancy, resulted in a higher yield per tree, in comparison with pruning times before leaf drop. The effect of pruning times on average fruit mass, pulp firmness, content of soluble solids, titratable acidity, and soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio differed between harvest years. Pruning performed at different times, before natural leaf drop, causes yield reduction in 'Royal Gala' apple trees, and the pruning time at 46 DBLD results in the lowest yield.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the variations in the stored food resources and in the number of immature bees in Apis mellifera hives used for apple (Malus domestica) pollination. The study was conducted in the municipality of Vacaria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with 40 hives, over two consecutive harvests. The evaluations were done in the hive brood frames before, during, and 45 days after a pollination period, by interpreting photographic field records. Before being transported to the orchards, the bees foraged primarily in areas with native forest or canola (Brassica napus) crop, in 2014/2015, and with native forest or eucalyptus (Eucalyptus sp.) reforestation, in 2015/2016. In both harvests, the percentage of food resources (honey and pollen) stored in the hives reduced significantly between the pre- and post-pollination periods, but there was no significant difference between the pollination and post-pollination periods. The greatest reduction in the storage of these resources was observed in the hives from the canola crop, which had a large supply of floral resources compared with the apple orchards. The hives most susceptible to population variations within the apple orchards are those from the canola crop, whereas those from areas with a lower food supply (forest and eucalyptus) show population gains in the apple orchards.

In some regions, where the cold isn't enough for plant's physiological necessity, chemical products are needed to provide the budbreak. However, the use of these chemicals has brought great concern because of its high toxicity and harm to humans and environment. This work was carried out to evaluate the budbreak of 'Eva' apple subjected to different concentrations of Erger® with calcium nitrate, as compared to the use of hydrogen cyanamide (Dormex®). The experiment was evaluated in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 crops, in Campo Largo, PR. The experimental design was a randomized block with five replications and the following treatments: 1) Control; 2) Erger® 3% + Ca(NO3)2 3%; 3) Erger® 5% + Ca(NO3)2 5%; 4) Erger® 7% + Ca(NO3)2 7%; 5) Dormex® 0.5% + Triona® 2.5%. Erger® showed satisfactory results for the replacement of hydrogen cyanamide, with budbreak rates of similar or even higher of it. The most effective treatment was Erger® 5% + Ca (NO3)2 5%. In spite of the use of inducers of budding promoting better sprouting of axillary buds and a higher opening flower bud, there wasn't increase production, compared to control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The air-assisted sprayers produce air stream, which carries the droplets aiding their distribution. However, many droplets are not deposited on the target and are lost to the environment. The use of cabins can reduce operator exposure. Thus, this study aimed to assess the potential dermal and respiratory exposure and the cabin insulation efficiency in pesticide applications in apple orchards. The spray was composed of water plus mancozeb and captan (3.0 L ha-1) and fenitrothion (1.5 L ha-1). The dermal exposure was estimated using absorbent cotton pads fixed in the operator's protective clothing and inside the cabin. The analytical determination was carried out by Liquid Chromatography with a UV-VIS detector and specific diodes array. The analytes were extracted by ultrasound, as established by the NBR 10004 and described by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The wavelengths related to the products tested were not detected up to the limit of 200 µg kg-1, indicating that there are good sealing and insulating of the operator inside tested cabins. Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators for enhancing fruit color of 'Gala Standard' apples (Malus domestica). The experiment was carried out in the 2015 and 2016 crop seasons. The treatments consisted of water, as a control; 300 mg L-1 ethephon, as a positive control; 400 mg L-1 prohydrojasmonate; and 400 mg L-1 abscisic acid. Flesh firmness, soluble solids content, fruit weight, and red color were assessed after harvest. Plant growth regulators enhanced red color of fruit and chlorophyll degradation. Prohydrojasmonate and abscisic acid did not reduce flesh firmness, in the 2016 season.

Abstract This study aimed evaluate the effect of biostimulants, foliar fertilizers and ethephon on the red color in the peel of ‘Daiane’ and ‘Venice’ apples. The experiments were conducted in Caçador/SC, during 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons. In 2015/2016, the treatments were: Control; Biostimulant I; Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II; Biostimulant II and KCl. In 2016/2017, was included the Ethephon treatment. In 2016/2017, Biostimulant I, Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II and Biostimulant II increased the percentage of ‘Daiane’ and ‘Venice’ apples with greater red peel cover, without affecting the quality and maturity of the fruits. In both cultivars, ethephon was treatment that promoted a higher percentage of apples in the category above 80% of red color. Ethephon increased red color intensity of ‘Daiane’ and ‘Venice’ apples, anthocyanin content, starch index, ethylene production and yellowing of background color of the fruits. The red coloration of ‘Venice’ apple peels is enhanced with ethephon, Biostimulant I and Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II and Daiane apples with ethephon, Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II and Biostimulant II.

Abstract The low effective fruiting is one of the biggest problems of apples’ production in Brazil and its main cause involves the process of pollination. The objective was to evaluate the fruit set and production of apple trees cv. Gala treated with extract of seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum and thidiazuron. The experiment was carried out during two cycles (2015/2016 and 2016/2017) in Porto Amazonas, State of Paraná, Brazil, with apple trees cv. Gala. The following treatments were applied at full bloom: thidiazuron at 10 and 15 mg L-1, Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed extract (Algamare®) at concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.6%. No treated plants were used as control. It was evaluated: fruit set, number of fruits, fruit weight, yield per plant, number of seeds per fruit, length and diameter of fruit, length/diameter ratio (L/D), titratable acidity, soluble solids, firmness and growth of shoots. The algae extract presented similar effects of thidiazuron in apple trees, promoting, in at least one of the cycles, the increase in fruit set, number of fruits, weight and length of fruits without changing their maturation. The application of Algamare® at 0.3% was the most effective treatment for yield improvement in ‘Gala’ apples.

ABSTRACT Glyphosate is commonly used for intra-row weed management in perennial plantations, where unintended crop exposure to this herbicide can cause growth reduction. The objective of this research was to analyze the initial plant growth behavior of young apple and pear plants exposed to glyphosate. Glyphosate was sprayed on 2-year-old 'Gala' apple and 'Abbè Fetel' pear plants at doses from 18 to 720 g per hectare of acid equivalent (a.e.). The plant height of neither species was not significantly reduced (less than 1%) by any glyphosate dose at 240 days after spraying, whereas the stem diameter and the dry mass of stem and leaves were reduced by 720 g a.e. ha-1. The glyphosate dose required to reduce the aboveground dry mass by 50% was 162 and 148 g a.e. ha-1 for apple and pear, respectively. Aboveground dry mass was reduced 2% and 6% for apple and pear plants, respectively, at 720 g a.e. ha-1. Hormesis was not observed in either species at doses down to 18 g a.e. ha-1. Both species showed low susceptibility to glyphosate; however apple was less susceptible than pear.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da densidade de plantio e de porta-enxertos sobre o desempenho produtivo de macieiras 'Royal Gala' e 'Fuji'. O trabalho foi realizado de 1996 a 2007, com as cultivares Royal Gala e Fuji, na região de São Joaquim, SC. Os tratamentos consistiram de dois porta-enxertos (M9 e M26) e três densidades de plantio (1.667, 2.500 e 5.000 plantas por hectare), dispostos em arranjo fatorial 2x3, com seis tratamentos por cultivar. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. O aumento da densidade de plantio aumenta a produtividade e diminui a produção e o número de frutos por planta, independentemente da cultivar. Além disso, o aumento da densidade de plantio reduz o vigor das plantas (seção transversal do tronco) e a massa de fruto. A produtividade induzida pelo M26 é maior do que a induzida pelo M9, porém, este produz frutos maiores em razão, possivelmente, da menor carga de frutos das plantas com esse porta-enxerto.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of preharvest boron application on the physical and chemical quality of 'Galaxy' apples after harvest and in controlled atmosphere storage during eight months, plus seven days of shelf life at 20°C. The experiment was performed with two treatments applied on the field: [1] Control (fruit without boron application) and [2] Foliar application of boron (four applications of 1.5kg ha-1). Findings showed that the boron application promoted a higher ethylene production and respiratory rate and it application also reduced the flesh firmness in relation to the fruits without it. A similar result was obtained after eight months of storage plus seven days of shelf life. The preharvest application of boron makes it possible to harvest apples earlier due to the fact that it accelerates the fruit metabolism. However, the fruits end up presenting a lower storage potential as a result of the higher ethylene production, respiration rate, decay incidence, mealiness and a reduction of the healthy fruit percentage and flesh firmness after CA storage.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de diferentes porta-enxertos no desempenho das cultivares de macieira (Malus domestica) Imperial Gala e Mishima Fuji. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Utilizaram-se os porta-enxertos CG.969, CG.874, CG.210, CG.56, CG.008, JM.2 e JM.7, além da combinação de Marubakaido com interenxerto de M.9 (Marubakaido/M.9). Avaliaram-se as variáveis: produção por planta, produtividade, número de frutos por planta, massa de fruto, área da seção transversal do tronco, sólidos solúveis, firmeza do fruto e índice iodo-amido. A produtividade de ambas as cultivares foi maior com os porta-enxertos Marubakaido/M.9, JM.2, CG.008, CG.874, CG.210 e CG.56. Além disso, os porta-enxertos CG.008, CG.874, CG.210 e CG.56 reduzem o vigor da cultivar-copa, mas sem reduzir a produtividade. O teor de sólidos solúveis dos frutos é maior quando se utilizam porta-enxertos menos vigorosos.

ABSTRACT: The effect of the incorporation of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) and nut meg (Myristicafragrans) essential oils in alginate-based edible coatings that were applied on minimally processed apples, is reported. The minimum inhibitory concentrations were 1.25mg.mL-1 (cinnamon) and 2.50mg.mL-1 (nutmeg), against both Escherichia coli and Penicillium commune. Over storage periods there was a significant reduction in the E. coli and P. commune counts compared to the control. The extent of enzymatic browning was also significantly reduced in the coated samples. In the coated minimally processed apples sensory tests, the flavor had the lowest rating of the properties analyzed, for both treatments, followed by aroma and firmness.
