OBJECTIVES: To identify factors that interfere with performance in cognitive tests frequently used for non-demented elderly in clinical practice. METHOD: Sample composed of 213 individuals, mean age 72.9 ± 6.1 years. The following assessment instruments were applied: Geriatric Depression Scale; Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); Verbal Paired Associates tests I and II (VPA) from the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS); Direct and Reverse Order Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-III); Simple Reaction Time (SRT), and Tower of Hanoi. A multiple linear regression model was used to verify interaction between dependent and independent variables. RESULTS: For the most part, the tests were not significantly influenced when adjusted for gender, marital status, depressive symptoms or use of psychotropic drugs. Significant interference of schooling and age on performance in applied cognitive tests was pointed out. There was a high correlation between MMSE scores and schooling, with a 1-point increase in the value obtained in the test for every four years of schooling (p < 0.0001). Results of short-and long-term memory tests were also significantly influenced by schooling (p = 0.0001, p = 0.02, respectively). Low schooling had a negative influence on attention performance according to SRT, significantly increasing reaction time (p = 0.002), error percentage (p = 0.01) and proportion of false alarms (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Our study found out a significant influence of age and schooling on performance of non-demented elderly in cognitive tests assessing overall performance, short- and long-term memory, attention, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed.

Objectives: To verify the effect of strength, aerobic, and concurrent training on the memory of cognitively preserved older adults. Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted. Sedentary older adults (aged 60 to 75 years) of both genders will participate. Outcome measures will include blood biomarkers, cognitive tests, depressive symptoms, socioeconomic data, and physical assessments. Participants will be randomized into the following groups: strength training, aerobic training, concurrent training, or control. Interventions will be conducted for 12 weeks, with adherence to training sessions monitored. Pre-training values will be compared between groups using a one-way ANOVA test. Training effects will be evaluated through two-way ANOVA (time × group). The research protocol was registered in The Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC) (RBR-655vxdd). Expected results: We believe that concurrent training may yield greater efficacy in improving memory outcomes, combining the benefit of both training modalities. Relevance: Considering the increase in population aging and that few studies have evaluated the chronic effect ofphysical exercise on the memory of cognitively preserved older adults, this is a relevant topic, since much of the literature has focused on investigating older adults with some cognitive decline. Furthermore, our aim is to provide an alternative training option by combining the benefits of aerobic and strength training, thereby optimizing time and enhancing both physical capacity and memory.

A central debate in contemporary Latin American social sciences revolves around the enduring presence of colonial patterns, practices, and forms of domination in research methodologies and the subjective framing of societal issues. However, decolonizing initiatives are emerging, concurrently, to challenge the ways coloniality has been entwined with the expansion of capital in the 21st century. This introductory article explores the key debates surrounding colonial persistence and decolonization within the social sciences. The dossier employs a methodology centered on documentary analysis and participatory social and political reflection, particularly through experimental approaches. The articles reviewed reveal that colonial persistence and decolonization are inherently dialectical, contradictory, and conflict-ridden, manifesting across diverse social, cultural, economic, and political domains. The uniqueness of this thematic issue lies in its ability to weave together a theoretical and conceptual discourse on symbolic and imaginary aspects within culture, spanning anthropological, legal, and educational dimensions. The analysis underscores that these issues are pluralistic and deeply intertwined with struggles over land and natural resources, enriching interdisciplinary understanding of the complex dialectical relationships between social, anthropological, economic, and political factors, alongside the aesthetics of cultural practices.

This article offers a critical analysis of the use of the term “archive” in discussions about visual arts in Ibero-America between 2011 and 2022: Why has this term gained currency in the Ibero-American art world during the last decades? What is it used for? How do artworks function when they are understood as archives? What are the main themes in these discussions? We propose to frame our analysis in four inter-pretive hypotheses. 1) The use of the term “archive” in discussions on contemporary Ibero-American visual arts can be understood through the model of the machine, that is, in terms of certain functions the archive performs. 2) Archives in Ibero-American visual arts have three basic functions: collecting, montaging and mobilizing. 3) Ar-chives are communitarian machines: they emerge from communities, create commu-nities, and require communities for their operation. 4) Archives are time machines: they shape our memory and our future. Understanding archives as machines allows us to see how artistic practices and discussions about archives in Ibero-American visual arts are linked to shared aspirations to come to terms with violent pasts and histories of exclusion, with the need to strengthen public deliberation, and the will to defend democracy. In this region, the relationships between art and archival have made it possible to read history against the grain and to coordinate the work of artists, archi-vists, communities and cultural managers with the concrete demands of social move-ments and their need for recognition. The poetics of archive in contemporary Ibe-ro-American art is oriented towards creating the new, not towards repeating the past.

This text investigates the precarious rebellion of a queer body in performance, utilizing the concepts of "escrevivências" (Conceição Evaristo, 2018), cartography (Suely Rolnik, 2018), and performance (Tânia Alice, 2016) as research tools. The study establishes a field of reflection on macro and micropolitical practices, examining experiences within these spheres and their intersection with the analysis of the performance "Uniformizing-myself," carried out by one of the authors. The research focuses on describing the aforementioned performance, conceiving it as a micropolitical practice in which the queer body becomes a site of resistance and political expression. The text below is performative yet experimental, where the authors seekto present alternative forms of academic writing, incorporating the bodily and subjective experiences of the queer body into their writing experience. Thus, the aim is to contribute to expanding the understanding of body and sexuality politics while simultaneously subverting conventional academic writing practices.

This comprehensive text explores the intricate interplay of memory, virtuality, consciousness, and personhood in shaping the human experience. Memory is depicted as a core process integral to identity formation, transcending mere recollection to become a reflective exercise in self-discovery. The advent of the digital age raises concerns about the impact of virtual connections on authentic encounters and the preservation of individual autonomy amid algorithmic homogenizations. In examining consciousness and experience, the inseparability of life and consciousness is emphasized, alongside the significance of corporeality in self-awareness. Abduction is proposed as a mode of creative reasoning that expands our comprehension of the human mind and its relationship with the universe. Furthermore, the text delves into the notion of personhood, highlighting the complexity of identity formation through interaction with the world, others, and history. Through a reflective and pluralistic approach, traditional conceptions of being are challenged, inviting a deeper understanding of the multifaceted human condition.

- Abstract
The remaining Araucaria Forest in the Southern Region of Brazil represents an important natural bank of medicinal plants, but with little report on the Ethnomedicine practiced in the area. Much of the ancestral knowledge of the medicinal plants in the region is attributed to the "tropeirismo" movement, which drove Brazil during the main economic cycles of the Imperial times. In this context, the aim is to investigate and document the popular rural knowledge on the nomination and use of medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases in domestic animals. For this purpose, we visited the family agriculture communities of eight municipalities in the Microregion of Capanema, Southeast of the State of Paraná. The selection of informers by snowball sampling, where a researching individual appoints another one with knowledge about medicinal plants, resulted in 165 opened and structured interviews for the rescue of popular beliefs. The main result of this study was the elaboration of an inventory of native or introduced medicinal plants which are used regionally for the treatment of diseases that affect animals, with the evaluation of their therapeutic potential. To the same extent, as the forest has been devastated by monocultures, popular knowledge and its cultural singularities about medicinal plants are being lost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to analyze the commemorative speeches produced by former Argentine presidents Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2015) each April 2nd, the Day of the Fallens and Veterans of the Malvinas War (1982). By adopting Discourse Analysis as an interpretative practice (Arnoux, “Análisis del discurso como campo académico,” Análisis del discurso. Modos de abordar materiales de archivo), we study different aspects of the linguistic materiality that uncover interpretative gaps about the War. We especially focus on five axes: the configuration of the adversary, the kind of emotions, the understanding of war as a national or a dictatorial cause, and the representation of combatants. Comparing the discourses of both leaders by taking these axes into account allows us to understand how the memory about Malvinas is discursively configured from a political and ideological position, not without tension.

This article examines the construction of a multifaceted collective memory through the main female protagonists in Song of the Water Saints (2002) by the Dominican American author Nelly Rosario. By bridging memory studies, Latin American studies, and Afro-Latinx studies, the book examines racial and gendered constructs, intergenerational struggles, US imperialism, and Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship to show the interconnected nature of memorial articulations for subaltern subjects. Through a literary close reading, this article dissects the lives of three generations of female characters—Graciela, her daughter Mercedes, and Graciela’s great-granddaughter Leila—and how they challenge, reinforce, and suffer racialized, political, and gendered subjectivities. By examining intersectional and historical trauma simultaneously, this study contributes to the field of memory, Afro-Latinx, and Latin American studies by showing the muddled construct of memory for Dominicans and Dominican Americans.

The objective of this article is to analyze the work Diário de Bitita (1986), by Carolina Maria de Jesus, through a critical-social and bibliographical analysis. The work will discuss the perspective of memory and ancestry in the narrative, as the plot deals with an autobiography by Carolina Maria de Jesus that presents accounts of her life and denunciations of social and economic inequality. To do so, we will use, to think about memory, the studies of Evaristo (2008); Halbwachs (1990); Izquierdo (2018); Pollak (1992) and Ribeiro Vetch (2010). We bring the issue of ancestry to the debate through discussions by theorists such as Matheus Gato (2020); Leda Martins (2021), Oliveira (2007); and regarding the author's biography, we will turn to Farias (2017), among other theorists. We also emphasize that the themes of memory and ancestry regarding the Afro-Brazilian community are some important discursive elements that characterize the richness of the work, allowing the reader to establish a critical look at the autobiographical narrative of Carolina Maria de Jesus. This article aims to discuss oral history practices, the challenges of the founding of ABHO, which took place in 1994, celebrating its thirty years experienced in the narrative art of oral history. The 1990' fostered rich dialogues between national and international researchers. Thus, the article immerses itself in the theoretical methodological issues that underpinned research in the years 1990 and 2020. Such approaches focus on issues of methodology, oral sources and memory. On the one hand, it was possible to understand how migrants interpret the experiences of their place of origin in the context of the big city. In the second experience, through a dialogical relationship, it was possible to perceive the construction of the history of memory and how certain values are lived and practiced based on cultural residue from a previous formation. Oral History and its interdisciplinary development have made a significant contribution to historical knowledge. Oral history is not a branch of History or another discipline, but a methodological practice. This article discusses the importance of this practice for historical knowledge as a source and a living roadmap for research. With 30 years of existence, the Brazilian Oral History Association (ABHO) is the result of the efforts of various researchers, professors, institutions, and academic communities. Secondly, it presents the importance of Oral History for the study of popular religious traditions, analyzing some aspects of the Congado Festival in a small inland town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The aim is to show some oral testimonies about this festival, highlighting its relevance for the knowledge of the religious phenomenon and for the construction of its history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the concepts of cultural memory and binary culture, as proposed by the cultural semiotician Iuri Lotman, this article discusses the ideia of cultural appropriation through the attempt of transforming acarajé, as a symbol and cultural text, into Jesus fritter (bolinho de Jesus). For this purpose, it intends to elucidate how the cultural appropriation process implies on a dispute for memory. Therefore, it is discussed how certain religious segments related to evangelical Christianity or Brazilian neocharismatic aims to impose the erasing of the cultural text memory by stealing one sign over another. As a result, this study identified how the semiotic mechanism works in order to simulate an alleged emptying of history and the meaning to a sign to try to forge another religious guidance to it. This article, stemming from two doctoral theses, aims to comprehend the influence of the family, work, and religion institutions in the identification of preferential meanings--frames that readers employ to connect with a message--in the reception of journalistic narratives. Drawing from biographical fragments--memories triggered during in-depth interviews--gathered through a common life history question in both theses, the relevance of these three institutions in the daily lives of 34 participants is discussed. The results indicate that these reference communities are identified in life stories through: a) spontaneous association; b) stimulated association; c) spontaneous dissociation; and d) stimulated dissociation. Through these analytical categories, it possible to identify the foundations of cultural mediations, dimensions in which meanings originate and are shaped through media consumption. The present study aimed to verify the effect of different delay times in conditional, identity and arbitrary discrimination tasks, in participants with intellectual disabilities and ASD, applied remotely, and to evaluate whether the contingencies of cues for engaging in precurrent behaviors (when needed) were relevant to performance in matching tasks with the delayed model. Two young people/adults with intellectual disabilities and four children with ASD participated. The procedure consisted of teaching identity relations through matching-to-sample and delayed matching-to-sample tests of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 seconds; these same steps were employed with the arbitrary relations. If the participant performed below 80% of correct answers in the tests, he/she performed the DMTS tasks, with differential reinforcement, and/or with oral cue and/or naming, respectively. At the end of the procedure, the participant was asked about the strategies used in DMTS tasks. Six participants presented accurate performances both in the training and in the conditional identity and arbitrary discrimination tests. Two participants with intellectual disabilities required an additional procedure to establish arbitrary relationships. The results showed a decrease in performance due to the increase in delay, especially for participants with intellectual disabilities. As for precurrent behaviors, the results suggest that these were relevant to the remembering behavior required in the experimental tasks. Future studies should expand the investigation of remembering and precurrent behaviors, in DMTS tasks, with the public with developmental delay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The text discusses the impacts of the 25th of April in Angola, highlighting that the event was not the starting point for the country's independence, but rather a step in a history of convulsive and violent political disputes. The author analyzes the memories and perspectives surrounding this period, deconstructing clichés such as the idea that the 25th of April was responsible for African independence and the exclusive protagonism of the MPLA in the independence process. The text also addresses internal tensions within the MPLA and the violence that marked the country after the 25th of April. The author questions the official narrative of Angola's independence, highlighting the hegemony imposed by the MPLA and the resistance to the imposition of this narrative. GROUP identity , *COLLECTIVE memory , *HISTORY of colonies , *NATIONAL character , *INTELLECTUAL history , *SOCIAL reproduction , *RETURN migration - Abstract
With the end of the colonial empire, following the Revolution of April 25th, 1974, the borders and identity of the Portuguese nation were redefined. In this context, around half a million citizens from the former colonies were repatriated to Portugal. Their arrival raises important questions about national identity and collective memory. Through a multidimensional analysis of memory, which reveals the complexity of memorial production and reproduction, this article addresses issues of citizenship and (post-)imperial identity related to Portuguese returnees. The text highlights the identity friction resulting from the failure to integrate the returnees into the national collective memory. The recent presence of these Portuguese in Africa and the need for their return after the end of the empire in 1975 questions the narrative of the country of the Discoveries and the "heroes of the Sea", calling into question the idea of an imperial history without colonial and racial conflicts. 40. Representações Femininas no Futebol: Vestígios de uma Memória Patriarcal?

- Abstract
With the increasing presence of female commentators, journalists and sports narrators, coverage of women's football seems to enjoy a certain visibility. To better understand the coverage of women's football and whether there are traces of a patriarchal logic, we determined Globo Esporte as the corpus of analysis, more specifically the news published in the first quarter of 2022. The article presents a case study, with qualitative methodology, based on documentary analysis and Content Analysis by Laurence Bardin. Of the 10,075 news articles published in the period about football, men's football accounted for 9,634, compared to 441 for women's football, which demonstrates the low visibility of just 4% compared to women's football. Of the 11 categories created from the thematic content analysis, we chose to analyze, in this work, category seven, "Financial aspects, salaries, awards, hiring and technical team", as we recognize that the issue of women's financial subordination is a crucial element for patriarchy, which would help to understand whether there are still traces of patriarchal ideas in GE's coverage. We concluded that there was a significant increase in coverage in March, which signals that women need the anniversary to be on the agenda, although the site seeks to combat patriarchal logic, it still reinforces asymmetries, whether in news that dedicates few lines to the female modality, in articles that address both modalities, but only include photos of men, either by designating the female modality in the subtitle, or by not producing reports on gender inequality. As life expectancy increases, evidence of various intercurrent diseases is becoming increasingly important. The memory problems associated with Alzheimer's disease and how sufferers describe them during their appointment with the neurologist appear to be an important tool for diagnosis and for assessing the quality of life of people affected by this neurodegenerative disease. The auto-description of forgetfulness disorders and its comparison with the actual assessment of each patient provides an excellent opportunity for the doctor to assess the level of cognitive deficit accurately and give the possibility for selecting the correct treatment.

ABSTRACT Objective: to investigate excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence among nursing technicians and the association with sleep quality and memory. Methods: a cross-sectional, inferential study, carried out in a hospital unit in the state of Goiás between December 2020 and January 2021. Assessments were carried out using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, instruments validated for the Brazilian context. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzes were performed. Results: the sample consisted of 189 nursing technicians with a 40.9% excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence. In multivariate models, excessive daytime sleepiness was not associated with sleep quality, however there was a significant association with overall memory failures. Conclusions: study results demonstrate a high excessive daytime sleepiness occurrence, an association with overall memory failures and the need for psychosocial interventions for nursing technicians.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare temporal auditory processing (temporal ordering) and phonological processing skills in bilingual and monolingual subjects. Methods: 100 undergraduate and postgraduate university students divided into a bilingual group (BG; n = 50) and a monolingual group (MG; n = 50). The study assessed the two groups’ phonological processing skills (phonological awareness, working memory - phonological loop, and rapid lexicon access) and temporal auditory processing skills (Frequency Pattern and Duration Pattern Tests). The Mann-Whitney test (p = 0.05) was used for statistical analysis. Results: BG performed better than MG in phonological awareness and phonological working memory tasks - nonword repetition and rapid naming tasks, except for color naming, and the two auditory processing tests. Conclusion: Bilinguals performed better on phonological and auditory tests. These skills help them identify and discriminate variations in the phonology of both languages, influencing their performance.

Neo-slave narrative ,slavery ,memory ,racism. ,Literature (General) ,PN1-6790 ,French literature - Italian literature - Spanish literature - Portuguese literature ,PQ1-3999 - Abstract
This analysis investigates two recent African-American novels, namely, The Underground Railroad (2016) by Colson Whitehead and The Water Dancer (2019) by Ta-nehisi Coates from the configurations proposed by the literary genre known as neo-slave narratives. These narratives are postmodern fictional reinterpretations of 19th century slave narratives which had a fundamental role in the American process of abolition. First, I will provide a brief overview of neo-slave narratives, particularly with regards to the North American literary context, and proceed to investigate how the two novels can be classified as belonging to this genre. Second, I will focus on the role of memory in both novels as forgotten historical events and religious myths are revisited by the writers. As theoretical support, I will turn to authors such as Bernard Bell, Ashraf H.A. Rushdy, Toni Morrison, Valerie Smith, among others, who investigated not only the reasons for the emergence of neo-slave narratives, but also reflected on the implications that these postmodern narratives have for the memory of slavery.
