Departing from the parallelism between large-scale human rights violations and the complex notion of ecocide, some conceptual remarks will be drawn within the realm of green victimology and restorative justice. By questioning the frameworks of victimhood and the irreversibility of ecocide, some conclusions about the meaning of informal practices of memorialization in mass victimization can be discussed. To illustrate these ideas, the Prestige case in Spain will be briefly presented as a case study. Available from: https://doi.org/10.35295/osls.iisl/0000-0000-0000-1044

Over the last century, Europe and the world have witnessed two world wars, civil wars, terrorist attacks, and abuse of power both by dictatorial regimes and in various institutional settings, all leading to serious violations of human rights. Today we continue to see the effects of such violations affecting large numbers of people. This special issue of Oñati Socio-Legal Series is about commemorative practices and their role in post-conflict societies regarding processes of social reconstruction and transitional justice. It also considers current alternatives and complementary systems of justice, like restorative justice and transformative justice to face mass-victimisation. Through practices of memorialization victimhood is defined, constructed, acknowledged or neglected. Their materialisation is often a result of negotiated outcomes involving a number of actors, legislation and institutions. By presenting case studies, the authors hope to enhance practices of memorialization and to critically contribute to the transitional or transformative justice agenda. In 1936, an edition of the Revista Brasileira de Música in commemoration of the birth centenary of Antônio Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) was published. In this volume, an interesting article by Paulo Silva dealt with the studies of counterpoint and fugue of the author of Il guarany. Silva, professor of counterpoint and fugue at the National Institute of Music, selected examples of Gomes' exercises conducted in Italy, under the guidance of Lauro Rossi, professor and director of the Milan Conservatory. In many of these examples, errors or slips are pointed out which Silva attributes, at least in part, to the shortcomings of Rossi's teaching method. The present work seeks to find the motivations, aesthetic and ideological, underlying the comments present in his article. The figure of the partimento and its consequences in the contrapuntal formation of Gomes were the starting point for the discussion on the teaching of counterpoint in Europe and Brazil in the Nineteenth and first half of the Twentieth Century. Furthermore, a mention is made of the Brazilian musical milieu at the time in which Silva's article was published. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A short walk in Lisbon is enough for even the most unsuspecting tourist to realize that the memories evoked in the city have a strong connection with the discoveries and colonialism, a tragic moment for the colonized peoples. However, that is about to change. Led by the association of Afro-descendants DJASS through the participatory budget of the Lisbon City Council, the memorial “Plantation – Prosperity and Nightmare” will be erected in Campo das Cebolas (Largo José Saramago) in tribute to the enslaved people. This investigation aims to give voice to the portuguese anti-racist activist movement and look at issues that Portugal prefers to avoid in the name of an exceptionalism that never existed.

Gabriel Mascaro’s Ventos de Agosto portrays the struggle of a small fishing community in Alagoas, Brazil, as they become aware of the different currents that invade it. Represented by the advance of the sea over the local cemetery, the extraordinary strength of these currents has been eroding their memory spaces and threatening their survival as a society. The idea of space in-between, debated in Brazil as a space for affirmation and resistance to social erasure, finds in Mascaro a transition point where the disparity observed between the forces in question point to a precarious interculturality in the face of such disproportionality and to anxiety for survival and memorialization.

The article analyzes the desertion and more generally the disobedience to the colonial war made within Portuguese Armed Forces between 1961 and 1974. The aim here is to map the historiographical, testimonial and audiovisual production made on the theme, showing how it has shaped the memory of desertion and its wider integration within the framework of colonial war memorialization in this last forty years. We will finally examine the testimonial discourse produced before and after April 25 on the subject, highlighting their context of production, their function and their particularities. In this context, it is argued that the memory of desertion provides an alternative mnemonic pattern, based on the denunciation of violence and the injustice of war., O artigo analisa a deserção e os gestos de desobediência à guerra colonial feitos no âmbito das Forças Armadas Portuguesas entre 1961 e 1974.

Between 1964 and 1966, a house located on Rua Santo Antônio in the city of Porto Alegre was the scene of a clandestine repression center. Known as Dopinha, this space was set up to put into practice some of the pillars of the repressive logic applied by the Armed Forces during a Brazilian civil-military dictatorship. In recent years, especially after the work of the National Truth Commission began in 2012, the space of the former Dopinha has been the target of memorialization initiatives, mainly held by two movements: Movimento de Justiça e Direitos Humanos and the Comitê Carlos de Ré da Verdade e da Justiça. Thus, the present work proposes to describe Dopinha's trajectory, its particularities and the context in which it was established, reaching even the memorialization initiatives that have this material support in this space.
