Illicit or non-normative sentimental relationships appear repeatedly in many of the short stories that comprise James Joyce’s Dubliners (1914). This type of emotional link did not have any room in end-of-century Catholic Ireland, and any unorthodox relationship was regarded or punished as sinful and socially unacceptable, following the strict morality of the times. In this article, I intend to analyse some of the most significant stories in Dubliners, in order to dissect the ways in which late nineteenth-century Dublin’s double standards punished any subject steering away from established social norms concerning marriage and acceptable relationships, either by forcing the reclusion of the subjects to the domestic/private sphere or by imposing a normative marriage on them, or even by pushing them to the brink of madness, alcoholism, or suicide.

In 1904, Joyce launched his satirical broadside, “The Holy Office”, attacking the members of the Abbey Theatre. For the young Joyce, it appeared “that mumming company”, run by Yeats and Lady Gregory, had “surrendered to the popular will”. He craved to show how he had broken away from what he considered the folksy, pseudo Irishness of “gold-embroidered Celtic fringes” and those who in their “foolishness . . . sigh back for the good old times” (Occasional, Critical, and Political Writings 28) – times encapsulated, for him, in Cathleen ni Houlihan. Despite telling us that “Cathleen was received with rapturous applause”, Stanislaus Joyce stresses the fact that his brother “was scornful and indignant that Yeats should write such political and dramatic claptrap” (My Brother’s Keeper 187). In “Telemachus”, the more mature Joyce took the opportunity to put his art at the service of his taste for personal and literary revenge through incorporating a brief, parodic take on Yeats and Gregory’ play through the scene with the milk woman. By setting “Cathleen” before his “cracked lookingglass” (Ulysses 6), he was able not only to explore an ironic echo of various tensions between the colonised Irish and the colonising Englishman, but also to ridicule the romanticised view of Ireland presented by much Celtic Revival writing – including drama – at the time Ulysses was set, and that would extend well beyond the time in which it was written and published.

Resumo O artigo parte da interrogação: em que sentido o recurso à escrita de James Joyce abala a axiomática do ensino de Lacan, centrada no estruturalismo linguístico? O artigo visa, então, localizar a relevância do recurso a Joyce na reformulação do conceito de inconsciente. Por meio do levantamento conceitual sobre a definição do conceito de inconsciente, no ensino de Lacan, foi possível problematizar a validade do recurso à linguística estrutural para definir o conceito de inconsciente, interrogando o deslocamento desse recurso teórico para a obra de Joyce. A hipótese do artigo é que a evidência clínica da fala imposta, em um paciente psiquiátrico, e na própria experiência de Joyce, impôs à Lacan o trabalho epistemológico de problematizar o estatuto do significante como representativo do sujeito do inconsciente e, a partir daí, elaborar o conceito de inconsciente em sua relação com a experiência de gozo, e não em relação ao significante.

Retranslating Joyce's Ulysses into spanish: An interview with Francisco García Tortosa and María Luiza Venegas Lagüéns

In his undeniable masterpiece Ulysses (1922), Joyce blurred the limits between fact and fiction from the very beginning as he announced his desire to provide an extremely detailed picture of Dublin, so complete, in fact, that the city could be reconstructed out of his book, if necessary. An exile on the Continent (Trieste, Zurich and Paris) from a very early age, Joyce always wrote of Ireland and his tribute to the Irish capital in Ulysses inspired a very original and unique annual celebration. It is called Bloomsday - after Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses - and it is commemorated on June 16, mirroring the novel's action set on June 16, 1904. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to analyse how Joyce's modernist Dublin odyssey shares some traits with travel writing and to understand the importance of Ulysses and its annual celebration to boost literary tourism in Ireland. Entre todas as adversidades presentes nas instituições de saúde mental, o desafio de conceber uma clínica em que verdadeiramente um caso seja tratado como um caso único tem se revelado como uma das mais complexas e urgentes. Para além das formalizações e dos tratamentos tradicionais, os sujeitos diante do adoecimento, ou diante de suas falhas estruturais, têm apresentado soluções que desafiam a nossa compreensão do tratamento, reforçando assim a necessidade de produzir um saber em torno desta questão. A partir do estudo do ensino de Jacques Lacan sobre o sinthoma joyciano, pretendemos, neste artigo, realizar um percurso teórico que consistirá na passagem do sintoma epifania ao sinthoma escritura. Não temos como finalidade uma reflexão literária da obra do escritor irlandês James Joyce. Apesar de abordarmos a sua escrita, com seus enigmas e suas inusitadas epifanias, nosso foco continuará sendo a sua solução como exemplo de escritura que faz nó borromeano. Enfim, nosso objetivo é trazer à discussão a contribuição que o sinthoma joyciano representa para a clínica, no que diz respeito à solução singular que o sujeito psicótico pode vir apresentar diante daquilo que Lacan definiu como forclusão do Nome-do-Pai. Nessa direção, chegamos à conclusão de que este sinthoma representa uma solução de sua falha paterna, uma suplência singular de sua forclusão de fato em um período anterior ao próprio desencadeamento psicótico. Acreditamos que este saber teórico representa uma oportunidade de reflexão sobre a ampliação dos limites de uma prática clínica, pois trás ao debate a diversidade de soluções que o sujeito pode apresentar diante de sua falha estrutural.

“Somatografías en los Dubliners de James Joyce” trae a la delantera un recurso para leer algunas literaturas del cuerpo, un mundo narrativo que implica un medio para imaginar y visualizar los cuerpos de los personajes. Los Dubliners nos lleva por un recorrido que nos permite corroborar las representaciones de cambios físicos en cada uno de los individuos en el texto. Esta lectura corporal activa un vínculo íntimo entre lectores y personajes. Una cartografía de los protagonistas no sólo ubica a los personajes en el texto sino que los aproxima a nuestras percepciones.

Neste artigo, trata-se de situar o conceito de psicose a partir de dois paradigmas: o paradigma Schreber, no Seminário 3 (1955-1956) e no texto De uma questão preliminar (1958) – no qual temos uma psicose francamente desencadeada; e o paradigma Joyce, no Seminário 23 (1975-1976) – no qual Lacan deduz uma estrutura psicótica, sem desencadeamento. Podemos dizer que há uma primeira clínica no começo do ensino de Lacan que se pauta nas estruturas: neurose, psicose e perversão. O primeiro Lacan formalizou o inconsciente baseado no conceito saussuriano do signo e elaborou os conceitos de Nome-do-Pai e metáfora paterna enunciando seu axioma fundamental: o inconsciente é estruturado como linguagem. A segunda fase do ensino de Lacan é considerada por Jacques-Alain Miller como uma fase de transição, pois ele subverte o Nome-do-Pai por uma pluralização e considera a operação de recalcamento não mais como atribuída à interdição paterna, mas à ação da linguagem. Lacan, na conclusão do Seminário 10 (1962-1963), destaca então o fim do Nome-do-Pai, substituindo-o por sua pluralização, os Nomes-do-Pai. A partir do paradigma Joyce, temos uma outra perspectiva da psicose, abordada sob o viés do sinthoma. A partir daí, podemos pensar em múltiplas soluções encontradas pelo sujeito para lidar com sua psicose. A teoria lacaniana dos nós nos permite abordar a singularidade das soluções inventadas pelos sujeitos através da amarração única que cada um faz dos três registros: o real, o simbólico e o imaginário.

The article investigates functional sentence perspective (FSP) as a tool of implicit transfer of information about characters’ inner world and values in the free indirect discourse of ‘Dubliners’ by James Joyce. It is demonstrated that FSP significantly contributes to character’s image creation by emphasizing connotative-modal information, highlighting the elements important for the author’s implications understanding, presenting new information as given, as well as placing additional emphasis on sentence topics (themes in terms of FSP).

Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a presença e o tratamento de categorias conceituais do filósofo alemão Friedrich Nietzsche no conto ―Um Caso Doloroso‖, do escritor irlandês James Joyce, especialmente o conceito de Super Homem. Nossa leitura aponta para uma subversão paródica do conceito de super-homem na articulação ideológica e estrutural da saga de James Duffy, o protagonista da história.

Al analizar el teatro posdramático, tanto la crítica académica como la periodística muestran cierta incomodidad hermenéutica, la cual suele resolverse en el señalamiento de los distintos grados de lo real verificados en la escena, procedimiento que, aunque pertinente, tiende a funcionar como un límite interpretativo. Por ello, este artículo propone la teoría de la traducción como una posible clave de lectura a fin de superar o, al menos, de complementar esta limitación. A modo de ejemplo, se considera la puesta en escena de Los muertos (Ensayo sobre representaciones de la muerte en la Argentina) (2006) de Beatriz Catani y Mariano Pensotti, basada en el célebre relato de James Joyce.When analyzing post-dramatic theater, the critique, both from the academy and the media, reveals a kind of hermeneutic uneasiness, which is often resolved by pointing out different degrees of reality on stage. Although pertinent, this mechanism works as an interpretative limitation. This article intends to propose the translation theory as a possible key of reading in order to overcome or, at least, to complement that critical limitation. With this aim, the author considers the staging of Los muertos (Ensayo sobre representaciones de la muerte en la Argentina) (2006) by Beatriz Catani and Mariano Pensotti, based on "The dead", the well-known James Joyce' short story.

à partir du commentaire de Lacan sur Joyce, j'ai développé une thèse lacanienne fondamentale pour penser la transmission entre les générations avec un autre concept que celui de l'identification : le prolongement du symptôme. De plus, l'accent mis sur le sinthome par Lacan, n'empêche pas de situer la sublimation comme l'un des autres prolongements possibles du symptôme initial de Joyce.

Este artigo tem como objetivo trabalhar a temática da voz, da música e do traço em James Joyce, seu pai John e sua filha Lucia com o intuito de pensar as diferentes saídas possíveis face à questão do sintoma da carência paterna, seja pela elevação ao sinthoma pela escrita de uma obra literária no caso de Joyce, seja pela tentativa de manejo da voz através da dança, no caso de Lucia. Propomos tomar a escrita de James Joyce naquilo que ela nos oferece para pensar a relação entre uma escrita possível da voz e a invocação ao Pai, detendo-nos na transmissão da voz efetuada nestas três gerações da família Joyce, no que cada um deles pôde, de maneiras singulares, criar face ao real. // The aim of this paper is to work the thematic of the voice, the music and the trait in James Joyce, his father John and his daughter Lucia in order to think about the question of the elevation of the symptom of the lack of the father through the writing of James Joyce in his literary work as well as though the relation of Lucia with the dance. Our proposal is to reflect about the writing of Joyce to think about the relation between a possible writing of the voice and the invocation to the Father, as well as the transmission of the voice made in these three generations of the Joyce family in what each one of them could, in different ways, create guided by the real.

This paper analyzes two references proposed by Lacan that apparently pose a paradox: in the first reference, in 1975, he stated that Joyce is an unsubscribed from the unconscious; in the second one, in 1976, he affirmed that Unconscious and Real in Joyce are tied one to another, which lead us to ask this question: from which unconscious is Joyce unsubscribed? This way, the author intends to examine the rule of unconscious in Joyce’s case, as explained by Lacan in 1975-1976. If Lacan considers the Unconscious structured like a language to be a lucubration of knowledge in relation with lalangue, this paper will show how Joyce finds a particular answer for the issue of joy that does not pass through that lucubration. // En el presente trabajo se retoman dos referencias de Lacan que plantean una aparente paradoja; en la primera, de 1975, habla de Joyce como desabonado del Inconsciente, en la segunda, en 1976, dice que en Joyce Inconsciente y real se anudan, razón suficiente para preguntarse ¿De qué Inconsciente está desabonado Joyce? Así, se pretende interrogar el estatuto del Inconsciente en el caso de Joyce, tal como lo aborda Lacan en 1975-1976. Si para Lacan el Inconsciente estructurado como un lenguaje es una elucubración de saber sobre lalengua, este recorrido permitirá ver cómo Joyce encuentra una respuesta singular al problema del goce que no pasa por dicha elucubración.

The aim of this work was to study the use of conceptual categories as defined by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in the short story A Painful Case by the Irish writer James Joyce. Particular emphasis is given to the idea of the 'Superman' from Nietzsche's works. We propose a parodic subversion of the 'Overman' concept in the ideological and structural articulation of the saga lived by James Duffy, the protagonist of this short story. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
