The present study observes the relevance of intercultural processes present in the touristic activity and tourism's multidisciplinary role as a source of leisure, culture, and welfare. The aim of this work is to demonstrate tourism's educational role and the relevance of touristic activity as a transformative leisure tool that can contribute to the development of intercultural competences. This study not only assesses the development of competences in specific tourist groups but also the positive and negative impacts to the populations involved in the touristic activity. Through applying education indicators to the field of tourism, where the impacts of touristic activities with educational purposes on the development of competences in those who directly or indirectly participate of said activities have been analysed, the present study sheds light on a formative and mobilizing potential of the leisure activities in general. It is a fundamental intensive qualitative research, with quantitative data complementation and mixed technique of data collection, given the age and sociodemographic diversities of the target group. The study's results confirm the relevance of the touristic activities' impacts on the most diverse sections of society and on a global scale.

This article has the theme of intercultural dialogue in teacher education in multilingual classrooms. The academical assumptions are the concepts of intercultural communication in Giaccardi (2005) and dialogue, according to Paulo Freire (1977, 1980, 1983, 2004). The analyzed sample is composed of the observations made in the plurilingual classroom of the Italian publ ic school, the class M1, inserted in the CPIA5 Project, in the city of Milan, Italy, during the academic year of 2018/2019. The results obtained verified the presence of an intercultural dialogue without the predominance of one culture over the others, present in that school context. As perspectives, it is proposed the need to deepen the studies in this area, in order to verify the possible elements that form the teaching work, in multicultural and plurilingual classrooms. 5. Organization, Implementation and Analysis of Telecollaboration in Two Educational Projects

This article aims to describe how technology can help address the methodological challenges that can be found in the organization and collection of data during telecollaboration among foreign language students. The study investigates the interactions of secondary school learners of English as a foreign language during task-based telecollaboration with secondary school learners of English from a different cultural and linguistic background. The research focuses on two telecollaborative projects in which the same participants from Bulgaria and students from two different schools in Spain participated in synchronous videoconferencing sessions on culture-related topics. Various data collection instruments were used to provide the triangulation of the findings, namely, video recordings of the telecollaborative interactions, interviews, questionnaires, and field observations. The data was processed with the help of MAXQDA software (https://www.maxqda.com). The article reveals numerous challenges for the participating students and teachers, as well as for the investigators in the organization and implementation of telecollaboration in educational projects. These findings are valuable and could help students, teachers, and researchers to predict and solve such challenges before starting an online intercultural exchange project in school setting. This article also presents a case study of using MAXQDA data analysis software to assist qualitative analysis of the data from learners’ interactions in a telecollaborative learning environment. We demonstrate that MAXQDA enables comprehensive and in-depth analysis from multiple perspectives when analyzing students’ online interactions in an intercultural setting. Importantly, MAXQDA permits us to code and analyze audio and video files without transcribing them.

La irrupción del enfoque intercultural en el ámbito de la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras ha suscitado cambios y ajustes conceptuales que renuevan la visión del trinomio lengua, cultura y literatura. El objetivo del presente artículo es proponer una metodología para el tratamiento de los contenidos socioculturales siguiendo los principios teóricos del enfoque intercultural. Para ello, se ha seleccionado un articuento de Juan José Millás, a partir del cual se plantea el desarrollo integrado de los componentes de la competencia comunicativa intercultural: conocimientos, habilidades, destrezas y actitudes. Constituye una visión renovada en el uso del texto literario, que además del input cultural constituya una vía para la formación intercultural del aprendiente de ELE. Irruption of the intercultural approach, in the field of foreign language teaching, has brought about changes and conceptual adjustments that renew the vision of the trinomial language, culture and literature. The objective of this article is to propose a methodology for the treatment of sociocultural content following the theoretical principles of the intercultural approach. For this, an article by Juan José Millás has been selected, from which the integrated development of the components of intercultural communicative competence: knowledge, skills and attitudes is proposed. It constitutes a renewed vision in the use of the literary text, which in addition to the cultural input provides a way for the intercultural training of the SFL learner.

Abstract: According to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the intercultural competence is one of the aspects that must be developed as part of the communicative competence in a foreign language. Two groups of students in their 6th year of Primary Education work on a pollution project through English as the vehicular language. The experimental group works in collaboration with students from a school in Poland through the eTwinning tool. The control group performs the same tasks, but with working teams formed by students from the same classroom. After the project, both groups conducted a questionnaire about their awareness regarding intercultural communicative competence. Results reveal that the group that worked in collaboration with the international students developed their intercultural competence more than the other group. Collaboration with students from another country— which has been possible through eTwinning — seems to have contributed to the development of this competence. Resumen: De acuerdo con el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia (MCER), la competencia intercultural es uno de los aspectos que se deben desarrollar como parte de la competencia comunicativa en una lengua extranjera. Dos grupos de alumnos de 6º de Educación Primaria trabajan en un proyecto sobre contaminación utilizando el inglés como lengua vehicular. El grupo experimental trabaja en colaboración con alumnos de un centro de Polonia a través de la herramienta eTwinning. Por su parte, el grupo de control realiza las mismas tareas, pero con equipos de trabajo formados por alumnos del mismo aula. Tras el proyecto, ambos grupos realizaron una encuesta de percepción sobre diversos aspectos relacionados con la competencia intercultural. Los resultados muestran que el grupo que trabajó con los alumnos polacos ha evolucionado más en su competencia intercultural que el grupo control. La colaboración con alumnos de otro país, que ha sido posible a través de eTwinning, parece haber contribuido al desarrollo de esta competencia.

10. Implementing Polylingual Space into the Process of Training Future Primary School Teachers

The relevance of the problem under research is due to a new social order of the society, reflected in the Concept for the Development of Foreign Language Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, where the formation of a polylingual personality is determined as the final qualitative result of studying a foreign language and culture. In these conditions, the problem of training the respective pedagogical staff primary school teachers, is being actualized for constructing a new type of education in a polylingual environment at the modern stage of the modernization of education, including the issues of developing its theoretical and technological support. Improving the quality of education, being a key problem of pedagogy, in the modern conditions of expanding the areas of international cooperation and the tendencies of forming a unified global community, comes into sharp focus. The aim of the article is to develop the content of an experimental curriculum on polylingual space and to test the formation of language competence of future primary school teachers in the process of higher education, as well as to study the specifics of their training for working with students in the multicultural educational space of modern Kazakhstan. The leading method of studying this problem is the analysis, which allows to identify the language needs of students. The study analyzed a series of surveys of 115 students and undergraduates, as well as university teachers of various disciplines. Moreover, implementing in the study such methods as analysis, synthesis, generalization, survey, diagnostics and carrying out various practical works, conditions to optimize the development of curricula and special courses and to remove obstacles in the implementation of trilingual education were determined. The analysis of works on improving the system of training primary school teachers in the conditions of polylingual space and the requirements for the personality of a teacher shows that the following areas of its implementation can be emphasized: the development of a teacher’s communicative abilities; the organization of experimental sites of different levels for teaching students in three languages; the development of integrative learning; the use of innovative learning technologies. As a result of the experimental work, the program of the discipline “Polylingual space: Theory and Practice” was developed in three languages for undergraduates of the specialty 6M010200 - Pedagogy and Methodology of Primary Education, a textbook with the same title and texts in three languages was published, tested, and implemented in the educational process. The materials of this article can be useful for primary school teachers, working in a polylingual environment, as well as for students, undergraduates and PhD students of the above-mentioned specialty.

This research aims to explore the function of intercultural communication of Chinese Rap music and the construction of hybrid identity, through discourse analysis methods: Narrative Semiotics, visual semiology, and sociolinguistics of globalization. The general context of the research is the development of global youth culture and Rap music as an intercultural formulation of local identities. Songs of two Chinese Rap groups are analyzed: Higher Brothers and Bohan Phoenix. In short, it attempts to scrutinize their use of Rap lyrics in order to promote the intercultural communication and construction of hybrid identity.

In this case study with a qualitative approach we aim to analyze perspectives of students on the intercultural competence and its development during their academic exchange period abroad. The increasingly competitive and globalized labor market requires knowledgeable professionals from an intercultural point of view. The techniques to collect data were semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Data analysis procedures followed content analysis. The results suggest that the perception of cultural differences increases in students, although the development and improvement of institutional policies of universities is necessary for the preparation of strategies that promote the development of said competences. Conclusions point towards the increased relevance that intercultural competence represents on Higher Education nowadays and on future professionals.

Relatório de estágio de mestrado em Ciências da Comunicação (especialização em Publicidade e Relações Públicas), O fluxo migratório contínuo e a presença de diversas culturas no território de Braga trouxeram enriquecimento ao tecido sociocultural da cidade. Entretanto, este cenário faz-se acompanhar das dificuldades de integração dos imigrantes, assim como apresenta desafios para a gestão da interculturalidade na sociedade e, por esse motivo, o Município de Braga viu-se na necessidade de desenvolver políticas públicas voltadas para as comunidades imigrantes e multiculturais presentes na cidade. Nesse sentido, surge em julho de 2020 o Projeto DiverCidade, com o objetivo de promover a integração dos imigrantes e a valorização das múltiplas culturas existentes no território bracarense por meio do diálogo intercultural. Para auxiliar na implementação do projeto, a agência LKCOM foi a entidade escolhida para ser a responsável pelo plano de comunicação, no qual os social media desempenham um papel fundamental para a execução e a divulgação de todas as componentes, atividades e ações do plano de atuação. Assim, através da revisão de literatura junto a minha experiência de estágio curricular na LKCOM trabalhando com o projeto DiverCidade, o futuro relatório de estágio buscará compreender o papel dos social media na implementação de políticas culturais e de integração voltadas aos imigrantes., The continuous migratory flow and the presence of multiple cultures in the city of Braga enriched the sociocultural landscape of the city. However, this scenario is accompanied by difficulties in integrating immigrants, as well as presenting a challenge for the management of interculturality in society and, for this reason, the Municipality of Braga found itself in need of developing public policies aimed at the multicultural immigrant communities that are part of the city. Therefore, the DiverCidade Project surfaces in July 2020 with the objective of promoting the integration of immigrants and the appreciation of the multiple cultures existing in Braga’s territory through intercultural dialogue. To assist in the implementation of the project, the LKCOM agency was chosen to be responsible for the communication plan, in which social media played a fundamental role in the execution and promotion of all components, activities and actions of the action plan. Thus, through a literature review along with my curricular internship experience at LKCOM working with the DiverCidade project, this internship report will seek to understand the role of social media in the implementation of cultural and integration policies aimed at immigrants.

The observation of Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Delights” triptych is the starting point for a short essay on the possible interpretation of this work by its last purchaser, Filipe II of Spain. Additionally, this essay leads to the proposal of a model, based on three categories of analysis, for the critical interpretation of the global course that humanity has been taking since the beginning of the great intercontinental navigations, initially carried out by the Portuguese and the Spanish. The proposed model intends to contribute to the defragmentation of the memory of a long process marked by the tension between hegemonic forces and dynamics of interculturality.

17. Sociopragmatic failure revisited: the case of intercultural communication between Brazilians and Americans

ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss the concept of sociopragmatic failure (THOMAS, 1983) by focusing on American interviewees’ perceptions of the phenomenon as arising from utterances spoken by Brazilian learners of English. To achieve this aim, interviews were conducted with three American teachers working in Brazil. After watching video excerpts from previously recorded English classes, interviewees pointed out which utterances sounded inappropriate to them and commented on their perceptions of learners featured in the video, as well as on their experiences with Brazilian learners in general. Their responses were used as evidence for the hypothesis that different types of linguistic asymmetry - namely, structural, pragmatic, sociolinguistic, and discourse-related - can lead to sociopragmatic failure.

18. La mediazione linguistica interculturale: il mediatore culturale e le sue competenze

Abstract – This chapter starts from the premise that a Masters course dedicated to Mediation should be clear about what ‘cultural mediation’ means in theory and in practice. As regards the theory, the chapter begins with an exploration of the meaning of the terms ‘mediator’ and ‘mediation’ both in terms of language mediation and cultural mediation. The competences necessary for successful Intercultural Communication (ICC) are discussed and a hypothetical organisation of competences for Cultural Mediators working with refugees is proposed, taking ideas from current inventories focussing on ICC. Two main areas are proposed: competencies based on Knowledge, Skills and Attitude; and also competencies related to Cultural Adjustment curves, taking the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity as an example. The article then discusses the situation in practice, focussing in particular on Italy, concluding with other scholars that the habitus of the cultural mediator is still that of a professional and personal ‘zone of uncertainty’.

Abstract – This chapter analyses the storytelling performance of an asylum seeker speaking in English for an international audience and recorded on a video released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The primary purpose of the study is to investigate the rhetorical structuring of the narrative in an ethnopoetic perspective (Hymes 2003), and to identify the presence (or, even more significantly, marked absence) of dialogic signs of intercultural negotiation deployed in the process of conveying to a culturally diverse audience a highly culturally situated story embedded in a personal narrative of displacement. At the same time, the study also intends to contribute to the current debate on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) by addressing the issue of the inherently situated nature of ELF, and of the political and ideological implications of an ELF approach to intercultural communication in both asymmetric and (programmatically) symmetric power situations. The video selected for the analysis was retrieved from the UNHCR Youtube channel and is part of a series called Storytelling: through the eyes of Refugees designed to make refugees’ stories known to the wide public and to legitimise refugees as a category of people endowed with agentivity and self-determination, and with the power of contributing to the discursive construction of their own role and status. Because of their global outreach, these videos qualify as instances of ELF usage in a broad international context and are eminently suited to the investigation and discussion of ELF approaches to conventionally asymmetric institutional communication.

20. L’importanza dei linguaggi non verbali nella cultura indiana

Abstract – Nonverbal languages are an integral part of human communication since they transmit substantial information such as emotions and psychological conditions, and therefore they contribute to understanding. Culture affects nonverbal behaviours. The Indian subcontinent is highly multicultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multilingual, and language diversity often makes communication difficult. In India alone, there are 22 official languages besides about 400 other languages. The populations of the southern area, who speak languages of Dravidian origins, do not have a common language to communicate with people living in the North, who speak languages of Aryan origins, and even people living in the same village often speak different dialects. English, which has the status of an L2 in the country, is spoken appropriately only by those who can afford to go to English-medium schools. The majority of people can be placed in a continuum going from highly creolised forms of English to a number of ‘trade pidgins’. Yet, in spite of the inability to communicate in a common language, Indians make use of nonverbal languages, such as hand and head gestures, facial expressions, eye movements, as well as less evident messages such as dress and their colours, posture and the space between speakers. Nonverbal behaviours that Indians display in daily communication are related to those found in traditional performing and aesthetic arts. The purpose of this paper is to suggest how the knowledge of nonverbal languages is useful for an appropriate intercultural competence for interaction with migrants coming from the Indian subcontinent.

RESUMO Caracterizada por uma variedade de estratégias de ensino, a experiência dos surdos na escola tem sido marcada por fracasso e evasão escolar. Assim, propomos refletir sobre os processos de escolarização desses sujeitos. Os dados foram coletados em sessões clínicas, estruturadas por equipe profissional multidisciplinar (pedagogo, psicóloga e intérprete), com um grupo de quatro surdos. As narrativas analisadas detiveram-se nas práticas pedagógicas, apontando três eixos de análise: (a) o papel da língua no processo de ensino-aprendizagem, (b) a atuação do intérprete de língua de sinais em sala de aula e (c) dificuldades decorrentes da aprendizagem baseada exclusivamente na escrita e na oralidade. Conclui-se pela importância de pensar o processo de inclusão do surdo a partir do respeito à sua condição bilíngue.

A presença das multinacionais chinesas no Brasil é fenômeno recente que deve se aprofundar nos próximos anos. As décadas de comércio entre os países agora mudam de patamar, através do investimento direto chinês em ativos brasileiros. O estudo desenvolveu um entendimento mais aprofundado do relacionamento entre executivos brasileiros e chineses nas organizações chinesas atuando no Brasil. O objetivo inicial era entender como a comunicação se dava entre eles e os impactos dela na gestão. Para atender este objetivo, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas individuais e os resultados foram analisados utilizando a metodologia de análise interpretativa fenomenológica (IPA - Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis). Foram entrevistados 13 executivos pertencentes às principais posições das organizações onde atuam. Os principais achados foram para além do tema comunicação. Eles foram agrupados em grandes temas: comunicação, indivíduo, cultura e governança. Destes grandes temas foram descritos mais 15 subtemas que descrevem a experiência dos executivos brasileiros. Na comunicação foram mapeados o idioma utilizado e as estratégias de comunicação do dia-dia. Sobre os indivíduos, surgiram a questão da pluralidade dos chineses, o nível de experiência, a diferença no horizonte de planejamento, a surpresa nas relações humanas e como se dá o feedback. Na cultura, o peso da hierarquia, o raciocínio do macro para o micro e de maneira circular, a negativa indireta e o papel da mulher. Nos processos de governança, como o processo decisório é percebido, o maior nível de detalhamento exigido, o papel das reuniões como celebrações de decisões previamente discutidas, a aversão ao risco e finalmente uma integração mais lenta na implementação da governança chinesa. Como implicações, foram sugeridas recomendações para executivos brasileiros que pretendem trabalhar em organizações chinesas para se ambientarem mais rapidamente no ambiente corporativo. Além destas recomendações práticas foram sugeridas pesquisas futuras nos campos da psicologia, antropologia, sociologia e administração de empresas, somadas as teorias de comunicação intercultural. Este estudo desbrava o campo pouco mapeado da interação entre executivos brasileiros e chineses, além de iniciar o debate sobre o choque cultural nas organizações chinesas atuando no Brasil. Foi demonstrado que para além das questões de comunicação é preciso discutir sobre diferenças culturais e de governança organizacional. The presence of Chinese multinationals in Brazil is a recent phenomenon that should deepen in the coming years. The decades of trade between the countries are now changing, through Chinese direct investment in Brazilian assets. The study developed a deeper understanding of the relationship between Brazilian and Chinese executives in Chinese organizations operating in Brazil. The initial objective was to understand how communication took place between them and its impacts on management. To meet this objective, individual semi-structured interviews were carried out and the results were analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. Thirteen C-level executives were interviewed. The main findings went beyond the topic of communication. They were grouped into major themes: communication, individual, culture, and governance. Fifteen more sub-themes were described that describe the experience of Brazilian executives. In communication, the language used and the day-to-day communication strategies were mapped. Regarding individuals, the question of the plurality of Chinese people, the level of experience, the difference in the planning horizon, the surprise in human relationships, and how feedback is given arose. In culture, the weight of hierarchy, the reasoning from the macro to the micro and in a circular way, the indirect negative and the role of women. In governance processes, how the decision-making process is perceived, the greater level of detail required, the role of meetings as celebrations of previously discussed decisions, risk aversion, and finally a slower integration in the implementation of Chinese governance. As implications, recommendations were suggested for Brazilian executives who intend to work in Chinese organizations to adapt more quickly to the corporate environment. In addition to these practical recommendations, future research was suggested in the fields of psychology, anthropology, sociology, and business administration, in addition to theories of intercultural communication. This study explores the poorly mapped field of interaction between Brazilian and Chinese executives, in addition to starting the debate on cultural shock in Chinese organizations operating in Brazil. It has been shown that, in addition to communication issues, it is necessary to discuss cultural differences and organizational governance.

This article aims to present a review of Edward T. Hall’s ethnographic and anthropological research to critically look at mediatization as a complex cultural process. This implies an explicit support of linguistic relativism and cultural materialism. Hall’s belief in linguistic relativism led him to further research the communication processes by relying on a meditation that directly resulted from the anthropological research conducted by Sapir and Whorf in line with Boas’ tradition. Hall realized that the principles defined in relation with the study of languages and interpersonal communication could be applied with equally good results to the study of human behavior in general or to the entirety of cultural facts and culture in general. Moreover, he develops his concept of culture from a strictly ecological perspective or the idea that it results from the special connection between man and his environment. Hall’s approach combines and mixes within a systemic view of culture both the cultural materialism advocated by Harris and White and the cognitivist tradition founded by Boas. This article shows the essence of Hall’s ecological approach according to which culture is conceived as a whole: a dynamic system, a coherent process of mediatization within which all the elements are deeply connected and therefore co-dependent.

RESUMO O artigo orienta-se pela hipótese de que a educação patrimonial pode converter-se em ferramenta conceitual e metodológica para a comunicação intercultural em contextos escolares. A partir de entrevistas realizadas com docentes atuantes nos anos iniciais da escolarização no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, são examinadas experiências e práticas pedagógicas em Ciências Humanas articuladas com iniciativas de educação patrimonial destinadas à salvaguarda e à valorização de histórias, territórios e identidades. As evidências analisadas põem em questão facetas contraditórias da educação patrimonial desenvolvida em municípios e, simultaneamente, demonstram sua pertinência para desconstrução e problematização de traços coloniais, seletivos e eurocêntricos presentes em práticas pedagógicas desenvolvidas no Sul do Brasil. ABSTRACT This article is guided by the hypothesis that heritage education can become a conceptual and methodological tool for intercultural communication in school contexts. Based on interviews carried out with teachers working in the early years of schooling in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, experiences and pedagogical practices in Human Sciences articulated as heritage education initiatives aimed at valuing histories, territories and identities are examined. The evidence analyzed calls into question contradictory facets of heritage education in municipal contexts and, simultaneously, demonstrates its relevance for deconstructing and problematizing colonial, selective, and eurocentric traits present in pedagogical practices developed in southern Brazil. RESUMEN Este artículo se guía por la hipótesis de que la educación patrimonial puede convertirse en una herramienta conceptual y metodológica para la comunicación intercultural en contextos escolares. A partir de entrevistas realizadas a docentes que trabajan en los primeros años de escolaridad en el estado de Rio Grande do Sul, se examinan experiencias y prácticas pedagógicas en Ciencias Humanas articuladas como iniciativas de educación patrimonial orientadas a valorar historias, territorios e identidades. La evidencia analizada cuestiona facetas contradictorias de la educación patrimonial en contextos municipales y, simultáneamente, demuestra su relevancia para deconstruir y problematizar rasgos coloniales, selectivos y eurocéntricos presentes en las prácticas pedagógicas desarrolladas en el sur de Brasil.

The coexistence of different nations, races i.e. cultures in the same social space that could be a country, a village or even a company is already a fact. Nowadays, not taking into account the tools of intercultural communication may result in damaging every communicative act. We believe that there is a necessity for revising and explaining the concepts related to the subject of intercultural communication from the perspective of foreign language teaching. In this article we will discuss such concepts as: interculturalism, transculturation, acculturation, integration, identity, etc. We will also look into the origin of intercultural communication. All these reflections will bring us closer to the intercultural competence which, in our opinion, students of foreign languages, i.e. intercultural speakers, should possess. In conclusion, we present the main objectives of the Common Frame of Reference for the Languages of the Council of Europe (2002) with regard to intercultural education.

Relatório de estágio de mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português/Chinês (área de especialização em Tradução, Formação e Comunicação Empresarial), Este relatório é o resultado de um estágio de seis meses na empresa Getein Biotech, Inc., durante o segundo semestre do Mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português/Chinês: Tradução, Formação e Comunicação Empresarial na Escola de Letras, Artes e Ciências Humanas da Universidade do Minho. O objetivo deste relatório é descrever as situações e desafios que enfrentei na Getein Biotech, Inc. Durante o meu estágio, o meu trabalho principal foi comunicar e desenvolver a motivação para venda e o potencial das empresas e distribuidores de dispositivos médicos na Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP) e analisar como manter uma boa relação comercial com eles. Nos últimos dois meses do meu estágio traduzi para português os documentos correspondentes aos produtos da empresa, incluindo manuais de utilizador, rotulagens de produtos e vídeos instrucionais. Esta foi uma experiência que me permitiu pôr em prática os conhecimentos adquiridos durante o curso de mestrado (Curso de Comunicação Intercultural e Tradução). Considerando que a empresa onde estou a estagiar se dedica à produção e distribuição de IVD (iniciais da expressão inglesa para Diagnóstico in Vitro), vou também analisar este mercado na China, bem como noutros países de língua portuguesa (aqui principalmente Brasil e Portugal). No futuro, a Getein Biotech, Inc. terá uma estratégia de internacionalização, pelo que darei orientações e sugestões no campo da comunicação intercultural e levantarei questões que possam ser encontradas no caminho intercultural, já que esta é uma situação inevitável para uma empresa no seu percurso para a internacionalização., This report is the result of a six-month internship at the company Getein Biotech, Inc. during the second semester of the Master's Program in Portuguese/Chinese Intercultural Studies: Translation, Training and Business Communication at the School of Languages, Arts and Humanities of the University of Minho. The purpose of this report is to describe the issues I encountered during my internship at Getein Biotech, Inc. During my internship, my main role was to communicate and develop the willingness and potential of medical device companies and medical device distributors in the Portuguese speaking community (CPLP), and analyse how to maintain a good business relationship with them. At the end of last two months of my internship I translated into Portuguese the documents corresponding to the company's products, including manuals, product outsourcing boxes and instructional videos, an experience that allowed me to put into practice the knowledge acquired during the Master's course. (Intercultural Communication and Translation Course). Considering that the company where I am interning is dedicated to the production and distribution of IVDs, I will also analyse this market in China as well as in other Portuguese-speaking countries (here mainly Brazil,Portugal). A presente investigação pretende contribuir para a produção de conhecimento sobre a educação global em contexto escolar junto de alunos e professores de uma Escola Europeia, em contexto internacional, procurando-se ressaltar alguns aspetos fulcrais deste fenómeno, a partir da seguinte questão de investigação: Quais são as perceções dos alunos e dos professores sobre a educação global e o desenvolvimento das competências globais numa Escola Europeia, em contexto internacional? Dada a relevância da comunicação nas sociedades atuais e os seus contributos para a globalização, destacamos os conceitos de globalização, cultura e comunicação, relevando o papel da comunicação e das tecnologias de informação como promotores de um diálogo entre culturas. Entendemos como fundamental o papel da competência intercultural e a sua influência ao nível das interações e da comunicação entre pessoas de diferentes culturas. Importa, ainda, destacar o papel da cidadania nos planos nacional e internacional, que surge de uma forma cada vez mais globalizada, remetendo para uma interdependência de comportamentos associados ao bem comum. Face aos desafios globais, a educação global exige novas abordagens ao nível dos sistemas, das políticas e das práticas educativas, que remetem para uma abordagem holística e interdisciplinar, sustentada por currículos escolares com um enfoque em temas globais, direcionados para o desenvolvimento sustentável e inclusivo. Partindo do objetivo geral “analisar e melhorar o conhecimento efetivo sobre a educação global”, optamos por uma metodologia de investigação mista e, como técnicas de recolha de dados, optamos por um questionário e pela entrevista semiestruturada. Numa primeira etapa, foi construído e validado um questionário que, posteriormente, foi aplicado a cento e cinquenta e quatro alunos do quarto e quinto anos de escolaridade do ciclo primário e a alunos do primeiro ao sétimo ano do ciclo secundário que frequentam uma Escola Europeia em contexto internacional. Numa segunda etapa, procedeu-se à realização de quatro entrevistas a dois professores do ciclo primário e dois do ciclo secundário na mesma escola. Os resultados obtidos em ambas as etapas, permitiram reunir um conjunto de evidências que apontam para o desenvolvimento das competências globais na Escola Europeia Alfa XX, destacam-se alguns projetos que envolvem componentes da cidadania global, particularmente a diversidade linguística e a apreciação de diferentes culturas. Concluímos que a educação global pode promover o desenvolvimento de competências globais proporcionando, aos alunos, o aprofundamento de competências necessárias para agirem a nível local e global. Por fim, apresentam-se algumas propostas suscetíveis de constituírem um suporte para futuras investigações em Educação Global. This research aims to contribute to the production of knowledge about global education in a school context, among students and teachers of an European School, in an international context, seeking to highlight some key aspects of this phenomenon, based on the following research question: What are the perceptions of students and teachers about global education and the development of global competences in a European School, in an international context? Given the relevance of communication in current societies and its contributions to globalization, we highlight the concepts of globalization, culture and communication, highlighting the role of communication and information technologies as promoters of a dialogue between cultures. We understand as fundamental the role of intercultural competence and its influence at the level of interactions and communication between people of different cultures. It is also important to highlight the role of citizenship at national and international levels, which appears in an increasingly globalized way, referring to an interdependence of behaviors associated with the common good. Faced with global challenges, global education requires new approaches at the level of educational systems, policies and practices, which lead to a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, supported by school curricula with a focus on global themes, aimed at sustainable and inclusive development. Starting from the general objective “to analyze and improve the effective knowledge about global education”, we opted for a mixed research methodology and, as data collection techniques, we opted for a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. In a first step, a questionnaire was constructed and validated, which was subsequently applied to one hundred and fifty-four students in the fourth and fifth years of schooling in the primary cycle and to students in the first to seventh years of the secondary cycle who attend a European School in international context. In a second stage, four interviews were carried out with two primary school teachers and two secondary school teachers in the same school. The results obtained in both stages allowed us to gather a set of evidence that point to the development of global competences in the Alfa XX European School, highlighting some projects that involve components of global citizenship, particularly linguistic diversity and the appreciation of different cultures. We conclude that global education can promote the development of global skills by providing students with the deepening of skills needed to act locally and globally. Finally, we present some proposals that may constitute a support for future research in Global Education. A noção de competência intercultural conheceu um grande desenvolvimento nos últimos anos, sendo muitos os modelos teóricos que nela assentam, provindos maioritariamente da área dos estudos sociais. Os objetivos práticos desta profusão são educacionais, por um lado, na medida em que apostam no desenvolvimento individual, em particular no desenvolvimento da consciência crítica intercultural dum indivíduo e, por outro, sociais, dado que pretendem assegurar a produtividade das empresas em equipas multiculturais ou promover a paz através da tolerância ao diferente e de competências de mediação. Pouca atenção tem sido dada às virtualidades da literatura para a consecução destes objetivos. A minha comunicação incide na leitura literária e na hermenêutica da alteridade enquanto promotoras de competências interculturais na linha do que propõem Martha Nussbaum e Lothar Bredella. It is taken for granted that intercultural communication is relevant for mutual understanding and even for promotion of peace in an ever-globalizing society, making intercultural competence an extremely important skill. Conceptualizations and terminologies of intercultural communication competence are highly diverse in their disciplines. There are many bases upon which theories and models are defined, but there are some interrelated characteristics regarding cultural competence which attempt to account for openness, empathy, adjustment, or adaptation. Many models, methodologies and practical propositions have been designed, mainly from social sciences and education areas, but the great majority ignore the virtualities of literary understanding to promote these capacities. This chapter should be viewed as an attempt to demonstrate that literature provides us with the narrative structures that are a primary tool of ethical life. Characterized by a variety of teaching strategies, the life of the deaf at school has been marked by failure and dropout. Thus, we propose to reflect about the schooling processes of deaf children and adolescents. The data were collected in clinical sessions, structured by a multidisciplinary professional group (a pedagogue, a psychologist and an interpreter), with a group of four deaf people. The narratives of these subjects were focused on pedagogical practices, indicating three categories of analysis: (a) the role of language in the teaching-learning process; (b) the role of the interpreter of sign language in the classroom; and (c) difficulties arising from learning based exclusively on writing and orality. We conclude that it is important to consider the process of inclusion of the deaf based on their bilingual condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resumen: En el entorno sociohistórico contemporáneo, en el que la interculturalidad se ha convertido en uno de los núcleos de controversia y debate más destacados, la obra de Montserrat del Amo nos revela, con sorprendente anticipación, una lúcida mirada en torno a la convivencia entre culturas en un mismo espacio geográfico. El análisis detenido de dos de sus obras representativas nos ofrecerá un meditado dibujo de las causas y de las consecuencias de los movimientos migratorios y, fundamentalmente, nos ofrecerá diferentes alternativas para disolver las barreras surgidas por la incomunicación lingüística y erradicar los prejuicios respecto a la inmigración. Abstract: In contemporary socio-historical environment in wich multiculturalism has become one of the centers of controversy, Montserrat del Amo’s work reveals, with surprising advance, a lucid look about the coexistence of cultures in the same geographic space. The detailed analysis of two of her representative works offers us a thoughtful picture of the causes and consequences of migration and basically, it shows different alternatives to break up the barriers encountered by linguistic isolation and eliminate prejudices about immigration.

This paper aims at analyzing the degree to which intercultural communication patterns are embedded in computer-mediated communication. Drawing on Hall’s and Hofstede’s intercultural communication dimensions, this study evaluates empirically high-versus-low context cultural orientations as reflected in the electronic medium, namely the blog, in three different cultures. Cultural variation is also analyzed in linguistic features and communication style in a synchronous mode of communication, by investigating data from several popular blogs from Japan, Germany and Italy.

The model of perception is culture itself, and is discussed in terms of 3 macro levels: heritage; the practices and traditions of a people; and the system of internal values and beliefs that both form the model of reality and guide it. Secondly, the paper focuses on translation and Outsider interpretation. It reveals how little emphasis is given either to translator language or to cultural competence, and focuses on the problems of mediating for the culture-bound tourist gaze.

Adopting the perspective of discourse analysis about migration as well as the principles of intercultural communication, in this paper we carry out a lexico- semantic study of the term "immigrants" in the Spanish national press and in the so-called foreign or inmigrant press in Spain. Our aim is to see how these media build alterity by elaborating migrant identities, and investigate whether they strengthen understanding between communities through the elaboration of discursive hybrid identities.

Em sociedades agrárias africanas, os rituais de saudação e despedida são uma parte essencial dos processos de comunicação que constituem essas sociedades como entidades colectivas. Por meio de formas elaboradas de saudação e despedida, as pessoas iniciam e encerram os processos de comunicação e interacção dentro de uma estrutura de identidades e culturas colectivas. Complexos rituais de saudação permitem lidar com todas as formas de encontros, tanto com pessoas vivas quanto com os espíritos dos mortos. Os rituais de saudação são adquiridos por meio de longos períodos de aprendizagem. Seu domínio é o sinal de ser um adulto e membro competente da sociedade. Actores externos de diferentes culturas muitas vezes parecem não estar cientes das subtilezas desses rituais de saudação. Eles os ignoram com um custo. Este ensaio fornece algumas percepções do funcionamento interno de sociedades africanas no que diz respeito ao enquadramento dos seus processos de comunicação interna e externa. Estes que são tão importantes para as suas mundo-vivências como para as suas interacções com actores externos de diferentes áreas. Intercultural professional relations form one of the most important challenges in modern Europe. This fact allows considering a problem of lack of social professional adaptation of foreign cultural groups, which is connected with unsuccessful re-socialization and non-formed cultural and professional identity. On this basis, the objective of this paper is to study the formation of a new paradigm of intercultural relations in professional space as a part of the employer’s responsibility. It will favour the task of intercultural conflicts resolution and prevention as well. The originality of the author’s view is, firstly, applying of new approaches (civilizational, anthropological, subject-oriented), and secondly, the combination of innovative approaches with traditional ones.

In this short text, we reflect on the nature of intercultural communicative interaction. We reject the possibility of characterizing the space created in intercultural encounters from a subjectivist angle, i.e., as a simple sum of the subjective activities of the interactors involved. At the same time, we argue that this space is not structured in advance, either by elements of a universal pragmatics or by typical communication patterns of any of the cultures that enter into contact. As an alternative, we propose conceiving of intercultural communicative interaction as an entity sui generis that emerges autogenetically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to address the emergence of ethnoscapes on the outskirts of Brasilia, located at the region of Samambaia Norte, with migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ghana. The proposal is getting back to the concept of ethnoscape. This need has been identified at fieldwork experience, for having found small changes that intercultural contacts develop on these locations, and moreover, pointing to the enriching power that the encounters with diversity provide. Therefore, along with the recreation of space, we would like to think the emergence of ethnoscapes on the outskirts of Brazilian cities to be able at discussing notions about solidarity, belonging, inclusion, through the contacts and encounters with the foreigners. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Essa dissertação está inserida no campo de investigação da Educação Superior (ES) com foco na interculturalidade no contexto da internacionalização da ES. A internacionalização é um tema que passou a ocupar a agenda de pesquisa nos últimos 20 anos, tanto de pesquisadores/as, organismos internacionais e governos como da gestão de instituições de ES. Já a categoria interculturalidade relacionada a internacionalização ainda é pouco explorada. Diante disso, o objetivo aqui proposto é analisar as categorias de pensar e operar interculturalidade, a partir da sociogênese constitutiva do projeto da UNILA (Universidade Federal de Integração Latino Americana) e de experiências de servidores/as desta Universidade, bem como compreender a internacionalização da ES no contexto da modernidade/colonialidade ocidental. A escolha da UNILA se justifica por ser uma instituição localizada na tríplice fronteira (Argentina, Brasil e Paraguai) e por ter como missão ser uma universidade internacional, em que a diversidade de etnias e culturas está presente. A perspectiva decolonial trouxe bases epistêmicas necessárias a construção da dissertação a partir de autores como Aníbal Quijano, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Catherine Walsh, Enrique Dussel e Walter Mignolo. A decolonialidade bem como, a interculturalidade para estes autores/as tem oferecido possibilidades de ampliar processos de resistências ao modelo hegemônico e apresentam potencial de mudança, tanto nos modos como vivemos, como na possibilidade de fazer e pensar a universidade, possibilitando desenvolver sensibilidades de mundo principalmente àqueles/as invisibilizados, que tiveram saberes, culturas e liberdades encobertos pelo padrão moderno/colonial. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, a partir da pesquisa exploratória e análise documental. A pesquisa ocorreu por meio da busca de documentos no sítio eletrônico da UNILA e entrevistas semi-estruturadas com servidores/as. Os principais resultados demonstram que a interculturalidade é parte da missão da Universidade, construída a partir de um projeto distinto, da grande maioria das universidades brasileiras; a inclusão é parte de seu projeto constitutivo e procura desenvolver ações e iniciativas voltadas à interculturalidade potencializando saberes não hegemônicos. O cotidiano impõe tensionamentos entre projetos e ações, no entanto, é possível afirmar que a universidade é um lugar privilegiado para aprofundar vivências de inclusão e respeito as democracias. This teses is inserted in the Higher Education (HE) research field with a focus on interculturality in the context of the internationalization of Higher Education. Internationalization is a theme that has come to occupy the research agenda in the last 20 years, both for researchers, international organizations, governments and for the management of Higher Education institutions. The interculturality category related to internationalization is still little explored. That said, the objective proposed here is to analyze the categories of thinking and operating interculturality, from the constitutive sociogenesis of the UNILA (Universidade Federal de Integração Latino Americana) project and from the experiences of faculty and staffs of this University, as well as understanding the internationalization of the HE in the context of Western modernity/coloniality. The choice of UNILA is justified because it is an institution located on the Triple Frontier (Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay) and because its mission is to be an international university, in which the diversity of ethnicities and cultures is present. The decolonial perspective brought epistemic bases necessary for the construction of the dissertation from authors such as Aníbal Quijano, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Catherine Walsh, Enrique Dussel and Walter Mignolo. Decoloniality as well as interculturality for these authors has offered possibilities to expand processes of resistance to the hegemonic model and present potential for change, both in the ways we live and in the possibility of doing and thinking about the university, making it possible to develop world sensibilities. Mainly to those who were invisible, who had knowledge, cultures and freedoms covered by the modern/colonial standard. It is a qualitative research, based on exploratory research and documentary analysis. The research took place through the search for documents on the UNILA website and semi-structured interviews with civil servants. The main results demonstrate that interculturality is part of the University's mission, built from a different project, from the vast majority of Brazilian universities; inclusion is part of its constitutive project and seeks to develop actions and initiatives aimed at interculturality, leveraging non-hegemonic knowledge. Daily life imposes tension between projects and actions, however, it is possible to affirm that the university is a privileged place to deepen experiences of inclusion and respect for democracies.

Dissertação de mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português / Chinês: Tradução, Formação e Comunicação Empresarial, Num mundo global, os intercâmbios culturais, comerciais e políticos entre nações tornaram-se cada vez mais frequentes. As relações entre a China e Portugal também ficaram mais próximas. Neste contexto, chineses e portugueses revelam curiosidade recíproca, relativamente a vários aspetos culturais. As festas tradicionais são uma parte representativa da cultura profunda de qualquer país e também estão bastante relacionadas com a vida quotidiana das pessoas, representando a sua história, tradições, crenças, hábitos e muitos outros aspetos. Essas festividades têm conotações diferentes nas culturas chinesa e portuguesa. A cultura portuguesa tem sido muito influenciada pela religião ao longo da história, dimensão indispensável na vida da maioria dos cidadãos. Na China, a civilização agrícola tem desempenhado um papel importante na vida e na cultura, o que se reflete nas suas festas tradicionais. A presente dissertação apresenta, caracteriza e compara algumas festas tradicionais importantes dos dois países, identificando as diferenças e as semelhanças de um ponto vista cultural. O objetivo é analisar os fatores que motivam essas diferenças festivas, deixando sugestões para uma melhor compreensão mútua e intercultural. Desta forma, pretende-se contribuir para o fortalecimento das relações sino-portuguesas através da vertente da cultura festiva., In a global world, cultural, commercial and political exchanges between different nations have become more and more frequent. Relations between China and Portugal are also closer. In this context, the Chinese and the Portuguese are very curious about various cultural aspects of each other. Traditional festivals are a representative part of any country's deep culture and also closely related to people's daily lives, representing their history, traditions, beliefs, habits and many other aspects. These festivals have different connotations in Chinese and Portuguese cultures. Portuguese culture has been heavily influenced by religion throughout history, which is an indispensable dimension in the life of most Portuguese. In China, the agriculture has always played an important role in Chinese life and culture. All of this is reflected in their traditional festivals. This dissertation presents, characterizes and compares some important traditional festivals in China and Portugal, analyzing differences and similarities of the festivals of the two countries, from a cultural point of view. The goal of this paper is to analyze the factors that motivate these festive differences, leaving some suggestions for a better mutual and intercultural understanding. Thus, contribute to the strengthening of China-Portugal relations through the festive culture., 在日益全球化的世界中,各个国家之间的文化、贸易和政治交流变得越来越频繁,中葡两国关系也变得越来越紧密。在这种情况之下,中国人和葡萄牙人都对对方的各种文化表现出极大的好奇心。 传统节日是任何一个国家深厚文化的代表,也与人们的日常生活息息相关,更代表着一个国家的历史、传统、信仰、习俗、以及许多其他方面。这些传统节日在中国和葡萄牙文化中有着不同的内涵。在历史长河中,葡萄牙文化深受宗教影响,宗教是大部分葡萄牙人生活中不可或缺的一部分。在中国,农业文明在生活和文化中始终发挥着重要作用。这些都反映在各自国家的传统节日中。 本文介绍并比较了中国和葡萄牙一些重要的传统节日,从文化角度分析了两国节日的异同。目的是分析造成两国传统节日差异的因素,并提出一些更好的可以相互理解与跨文化交流的建议,从而希望通过节日文化促进并加强中葡两国的关系。

Relatório de estágio de mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português/Chinês: Tradução, Formação e Comunicação Empresarial, Este relatório, realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português/Chinês: Tradução, Formação e Comunicação Empresarial da Universidade do Minho, pretende descrever e analisar o estágio curricular realizado na empresa Market Access - Experts in International Business durante o período de cinco meses. Nesta fase do percurso académico, um primeiro contacto com o mercado de trabalho revela-se essencial e, nesse sentido, a realização de um estágio curricular é uma excelente ocasião para pôr em prática todos os conhecimentos adquiridos até então e ter esse primeiro contacto. Em primeiro lugar, será realizado um enquadramento teórico de forma a expor os conhecimentos e competências usados na realização deste estágio, abordando o papel da cultura no desempenho de uma comunicação bem-sucedida e explorando alguns conceitos teóricos associados à comunicação intercultural. De seguida, será apresentado e descrito o contexto deste estágio, bem como a estrutura da entidade acolhedora. Ainda dentro da segunda parte, serão igualmente analisadas as tarefas realizadas durante os cinco meses de estágio, apresentando uma descrição detalhada das mesmas e dos principais problemas enfrentados. Por fim, será feita uma pequena reflexão acerca de possíveis melhorias a fazer em empresas que possuam ou procurem estabelecer relações comerciais com a China, de forma a diminuir o impacto dos obstáculos à comunicação empresarial intercultural., This report, written within the framework of the Master's Degree in Portuguese/Chinese Intercultural Studies: Translation, Training and Business Communication in the University of Minho, aims to describe and review the curriculum internship held at the company Market Access - Experts in International Business with the duration of five months. At this stage of one’s academic journey, a first contact with the job market is vital and, in this sense, a curriculum internship is an excellent opportunity to put into practice all the knowledge acquired so far and have that first contact. Firstly, a theoretical framework will be carried out in order to expose the knowledge necessary to the completion of this internship. Concepts such as the role that culture plays in the exercise of a successful intercultural communication will be addressed and some theoretical concepts related with intercultural communication will be explored. Afterwards, the context in which this internship was carried out, as well as the structure of the company where it was held will be presented. Still within the second part, the tasks performed during the five months of the internship will be analyzed, presenting a detailed description of the same, as well as the main problems faced when carrying them out. 47. A Comunicação Intercultural nas Organizações: exemplos Dinamarqueses.

- Abstract
This article main theme is intercultural communication in organizations and its general aim is the understanding of the importance of intercultural communication instruments in the internal communication addressed to foreign workers. Consequently, the descending internal communication (administration-foreign workers) is analyzed in two Danish organizations with cross-cultural environment. A mixed method is used, with the combination of semi directive in-depth interviews to the human resources directors of the two companies (Io Interactive and LICengineering), and a survey has been applied to the foreign employees of these organizations. The findings show that there is concern with the integration of foreign employees. Consequently, some specific communication tools are used for this integration and with the objective of reaching organizational goals. Nevertheless, the perceptions of the direction of human resources and workers about communication key factors are sometimes different. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of studies about communicative styles in different cultures has revealed the existence of a certain diversity of communication patterns related to a variety of interactional situations. Therefore, once we are able to state those divergences with regard to cultural groups, we could then ask how these different patterns and cultural backgrounds might lead to conflicts in intercultural communication. In this paper, based on a videotaped interaction between four Brazilians and four Germans, we draw our attention towards such situations of conflict. As for the theoretical background of the research, we rely on a constructivist perspective on communication, as well as on pragmatic theories about facework strategies and politeness. The objective of this study is to discuss affordances in foreign language (L2) teacher education in the digital age. With that aim, some pedagogical interventions were carried out in the course of “Supervised Internship” within the context of the Undergraduate Degree in English Language Teaching, at a federal university in the Southeast of Brazil in order to obtain empirical data concerning the perceptions of pre-service English teachers. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of affordance, in relation to the effects of globalization (and its Information and Communication Technologies - ICTs) on the education of language teachers in the digital age, considering aspects of interculturality, through hybrid approaches such as CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) and the Intercomprehension approach. Data were obtained through participant observation and interviews with educators and pre-service teachers, and include: 1) discussion of texts about language teaching, interculturality and the use of technologies in education; 2) virtual meetings in COIL format with pre-service teachers enrolled in the course of “Supervised Internship” at a Brazilian university and at Alberto Hurtado University (AHU) in Chile; 3) discussion/reflection sessions; 4) interviews with participants. The analysis suggests that ICTs and approaches such as CLIL, COIL and Intercomprehension promote affordances for inclusive practices (for financially disadvantaged people, with the use of internet); multilingual practices (including other languages besides English); and intercultural practices, promoting contact and learning among different cultures and languages.
