This article analyses a series of articles published in Portuguese and Indian newspapers concerning the business trips of Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa to India in January 2017 and December 2019. It aims to scrutinise how, on the one hand, India and his Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, are presented in the Portuguese press and, on the other, how Portugal and António Costa are portrayed in the Indian press. What are the media frameworks and the language used by political actors and journalists during these trips? What are the affinities and the contrasts in the texts which circulate in the printed press in the colonial and in post-colonial periods? Does the coverage in the Portuguese and Indian presses at the beginning of the 21st century give us any indication of some post-colonial resentment in the current relations between India and Portugal? Or are commercial and technological interests overshadowing this past of Portuguese imperial rule in the Indian subcontinent? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article has focused on presenting and analyzing the life and missionary work of William Carey. For this reason, the main events of his life were considered, such as his upbringing, childhood and youth, conversion, preparation for the missionary work and the missionary work itself, with special emphasis on the foundation of the Baptist Missionary Society and the principles and strategies developed and used by William Carey to spread the gospel in India. In addition, the results and fruits achieved by Carey through his work were also presented, with emphasis on the social reforms he promoted in the areas of education and human rights. For the preparation and development of this article, books about the historical progress of Christian missions, biographical records on William Carey and the Enquiry he wrote were used. El discurso político de los presidentes de Estados Unidos William Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama y Donald Trump hacia la India evidencia el estado de las relaciones bilaterales. La apertura de un nuevo ciclo de vínculos multisectoriales, la lucha contra el terrorismo, la relevancia de la ubicación geográfica estratégica de la India para la política del pívot asiático y el peso que se le otorgó en la proyección norteamericana hacia el Indo-Pacífico, determinó una mayor atención de los gobiernos estadounidenses hacia Nueva Delhi. El uso de marcadores discursivos, los simbolismos, los cortejos y halagos y la apelación a las relaciones personales entre sus líderes influyeron sobremanera en un avance histórico de los lazos políticos, diplomáticos, económicos, comerciales y de seguridad.

Abstract Based on the literature on rising powers, we contend that India has historically perceived itself as a civilizational entity and benefited from the loopholes opened by power transition periods to connect its material capabilities with its normative ambition. Our methodology compares how India behaved after the Cold War (from 1991) with China’s emergence (2008 onwards) through three variables: (i) the acquisition of economic and military power, (ii) the quest for globalized authority, and (iii) the deliberate pursuit of international leadership. We conclude that if the first was already present after the Cold War, the other two only followed more recently, when India employed a deliberate strategy to shape global issues.

[Purpose] This article addresses the lack of legislation in India to govern digital currencies, as well as the legality of Bitcoin in comparison to Russia's ban on other digital assets for payment regulation, highlighting the necessity for effective legislation once all around the world. It further delves into potential misuse of private cryptocurrencies in a variety of ways while placing upon the need for both countries to form a new digital currency regulatory authority. [Methodology/Approach/Design] This paper probes into the existing legal regulations for Cryptocurrency in India, Russia and other countries by using primary and secondary data throughout the paper. The primary data have been taken from legitimate government sources such as Russia's federal law and other bills and laws enacted in India, such as the "Banning of Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2019" and "The Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021." Various judgments like the case of Internet and Mobile Association of India v. Reserve Bank of India and Dwaipayan Bhowmick v. Union Of India and Ors. have been taken out from Manupatra which is an online database for legal research. Government reports and notifications from the Indian, Russian and US government have also been examined. The secondary data include numerous news articles from Times of India, The Mirror, India Times, The Moscow Times, Telegraph, The UK News and other new sites. Lastly, articles by various researchers like Bohme et al, Dyhrberg and Kim have also been thoroughly analysed. [Findings] It was concluded that legalising Cryptocurrency through codified laws, appropriate approval for digital currencies through regulatory authorities, establishing clear definition of ‘cryptocurrency’, uniform taxation for all types of Cryptocurrencies, updation of penal laws and setting imprisonment for cryptocurrency regulation violation seem to be some effective solutions to reignite the Indian and Russian Economies. [Practical Implications] The practical implication lies in the fact that the use of cryptocurrencies is increasing on a daily basis, but neither the national government nor the world organizations has made any steps to control the market for virtual currencies.

In this essay, I explore three instances of political consent by the local elites of Goa towards Portuguese governance in the sixteenth century. I delve into how these forms of consent evolved into an increasingly subconscious and ingrained acceptance. I argue that this progression stemmed from the broader effects of the local elites' micro decisions at three pivotal junctures: the formulation of the Foral de Mexia in 1526, the enactment of the 1541 document formalizing the redirection of local temple revenues towards Christian worship, and the establishment of the Foral/Tombo in 1554, which recorded the properties and assets associated with these temples and their officials. Initially motivated by pragmatism to maintain the social order and the elites’ status, these decisions had short-term objectives. Nevertheless, their cumulative impact bound these elites to imperial authority, leading to the transformation of their identity and solidifying Portuguese dominion. Abstract There is always scepticism about the extent to which an elected member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) can meaningfully exert influence. This article reassesses how, between 2010 and 2012, Brazil, India, and South Africa tried to leverage their membership to influence UNSC decision-making processes. It addresses the Council’s dynamics and practices, the centrality of its five permanent members (P5), and the ways these countries achieve their foreign policy objectives. Through country-specific cases, this article shows that although there is space for an elected member to influence the Council, challenging the predominance of the P5 remains difficult, even by seizing opportunities and engaging with key UNSC players.

This article is a series of reflections generated through research and practice of an Indian Object Theatre company from 2011-2023. It reflects from the standpoint of the Indian context while looking at the history, development and practices in other parts of the world.

Background: The health challenges faced by the homeless are widely unaccounted for in the global south. In India, the lack of a primary healthcare sector in urban areas has led informal healthcare providers, such as Street Medicine, to step in. Methods: By compiling data collected by the Centre for Equity Studies’ Street Medicine teams from June 2016 to October 2018 (n =16,635), this study provides the first empirical assessment of the homeless disease burden in a global south country, while limited to only the people experiencing homelessness that the teams treat, hence being a burden of treatment. Our analysis quantifies this burden among those who seek care from Street Medicine teams and identifies variations in this burden’s distribution across demography and time. Results: The majority (n = 13,557; 81.5%) of Street Medicine cases can be attributed to 19 diagnoses or symptoms, which are mostly therapeutically-simple conditions. The distribution of disease seems to be affected by different configurations of three characteristics: demographics (age and sex), urban geography (where homeless reside), and season. Conclusion: The Street Medicine teams must reflect on the balance they wish to achieve by addressing the relatively common and mild conditions documented in the dataset, and more severe and established diseases within homeless communities. Rapid diagnostic tests for resource-constrained settings could be integrated into Street Medicine practice in order to strengthen the data on which resource allocation decisions are made and improve assessments of homeless disease burden.

A partir de finales del siglo xviii se produjo una gran afluencia de migraciones desde la India hasta Mauricio. Tras la abolición de la esclavitud, los colonizadores británicos buscaron mano de obra barata en los países asiáticos, especialmente en la India. Allí contrataban a trabajadores para labrar los campos de caña de azúcar. Desde entonces existe una gran diversidad cultural, lingüística, religiosa y étnica conviviendo en la isla. Este momento histórico lo relata la autora francófona mauriciana de origen indio, Nathacha Appanah (1973-), en su primera novela, Les Rochers de Poudre d’Or (2003). Emplearemos como corpus de trabajo esta obra literaria con el fin de reflexionar sobre el proceso de (re)construcción identitaria de los migrantes que habitan este territorio. Igualmente, este imaginario se utilizará como marco para teorizar la importancia de la representación y la cohabitación de otras identidades dentro de un mismo espacio geopolítico.
