The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the development of drug resistance in patients with HIV infection and undergoing pharmacological treatments. Methodology: We performed a systematic review in the PubMed and Scopus electronic databases, following the items of the Guidelines for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). We selected original articles that studied the development of drug resistance in the treatment of patients with acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Results: Initially, 818 works were identified in the searched databases (105 from PubMed, 713 from Scopus). After exclusion by title and abstract, 58 articles were selected for full-text analysis. In the end, 20 articles were selected as relevant to compose the qualitative synthesis of the present work. Conclusion: The development of drug resistance was due to classic pharmacological treatments, pre-exposure prophylaxis, new drug classes, mutations, treatment duration, increase in CD4+ cells and individual factors.
