Estas recomendações serão apresentadas no final do artigo. ABSTRACT - In 1996 the European Community has chosen to concentrate its initiatives on reduction of smoking impact in three specific groups – young people, non smokers and those willing to stop. Mortality and morbidity reduction in these groups due to smoking is now a challenge to health professionals. Nevertheless, this challenge is hardly met, since many of these health professionals have no information or training on recent advances on smoking cessation and its effectiveness. This article describes nicotine dependence in its context and alerts health professionals to the existence of effective interventions and to the need of applying them, being their role essential in this field. Some evidence of clinical practice on smoking cessation are reviewed and some guidelines defined. At the end of the article the author makes some recommendations. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
