ABSTRACT Typical resultative constructions in English are unavailable in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and in Romance. This fact has been attributed by previous studies to different event-framings, following the Talmian view. English would illustrate the satellite-framing pattern, whereas Romance would illustrate the verb-framing pattern. Literature in BP has mainly focused on describing properties of different sentences similar to resultatives of the English type. A large part of the debate has been devoted to answering whether these can be classified as true resultatives. Much less attention has been dedicated to a proper description of the framing patterns in BP. This paper fills in this gap and, by doing so, argues that BP admits both framing patterns. The v-framing pattern is highly productive, exemplified by numerous complex parasynthetic verbs that entail a result. The s-framing pattern is marginal, illustrated by a small sample of modified resultatives and verb-particle constructions. This paper supports the framing analysis, but recasts its merits in light of new connections established among (apparent) resultatives in BP.

Este artigo retoma a tese de Moreira (2015) para discutir um trabalho recente de Resende e Rech (2020) sobre adjetivos sufixados em -vel no português. Nele, proponho uma análise sintática e semântica unificada para explicar a formação desses adjetivos, os quais denomino disposicionais. Analiso o sufixo -vel como um núcleo adjetival que se comporta como um modal dinâmico, com força quantificacional existencial, uma base modal formada por propriedades (introduzidas por frases do tipo “em virtude de”) e uma fonte de ordenamento proposicional, predominantemente estereotípica (BRENNAN, 1993). Sintaticamente, proponho que o sufixo tem comportamento uniforme e seleciona uma projeção não saturada de Voz/Iniciador, como numa operação morfossintática passiva (BRUENING, 2013), ideia que implemento no modelo da sintaxe de primeira fase (RAMCHAND, 2008). Essa proposta dispensa a postulação de duas regras distintas, já familiares em propostas lexicalistas (WASOW 1977), assim como de diferentes alturas de concatenação do sufixo em uma hierarquia funcional, como em propostas não lexicalistas (Oltra-Massuet, 2014; RESENDE; RECH, 2020). Defendo, assim, que ela permite uma explicação mais adequada e elegante para a derivação dos padrões observados nessa classe de adjetivos.

The main objective of this paper is to revisit the category known as “brazilianism”. This category is analyzed from a traditional and historical perspective, which regards “brazilianisms” as particular expressions or words, coined in Brazil, that diverge from Portuguese expressions. This category is also analyzed from a lexicographical perspective, which, based on a traditional view, labels certain lexical items as “brazilianisms”. This paper is based on literature review dating back to the first records of these formations, as well as on the investigation of modern dictionaries. A common core of all definitions of “brazilianisms” discussed throughout this paper is that this category distinguishes Brazilian Portuguese (BP) from European Portuguese (EP), although there is disagreement with respect to the etymological origins of these formations. This paper does not acknowledge this as a problematic fact, and further concludes that the profusion of etymological sources (e.g., Amerindian, African, and Portuguese) is one of the fundamental characteristics of “brazilianisms”. Additionally, this paper revisits Mario de Andrade’s contributions to the topic, based on his particular view of “brazilianisms”, from his project titled Gramatiquinha. The label “brazilianism” is then extended to encompass not only words, but also various constructions and strategies which, nonetheless, would be typical of BP. Finally, the main contribution of this paper lies in the attempt to trace back the history of the concept of “brazilianism”, to rediscover it, and to think about which structures and contemporary trends in BP could be investigated under this category.
