The development of the school-based model of education and the structuring of the public school system were, in the case of Portugal, characterized by slowness, ambiguity and complexity. A clear example of this is the evolution of secondary schools (liceus), starting from their much lauded creation by Passos Manuel in 1836. The Pombaline tradition of Royal Academies (aulas regias) remained enshrined in institutional practice, in numerous respects, throughout the subsequent decades. The first liceus were not the integrated and coherent institutions of which legislators dreamed, but rather hybrid and incomplete spaces, especially with regard to the curriculum, the teachers, the teaching materials, facilities, etc. This paper examines the transition from aulas regias to liceus in Portugal in the mid-nineteenth century, focusing specifically on the the processes that led to the inclusion of the sciences in the curriculum as implemented in daily practice.
