2. Revolution in 1672? On the Philosophy of a Disproportion in History

In the seventeenth century, the Dutch Republic was at the forefront of modernity, though not quite modern yet. The disproportion concerned a crisis that would burst out in 1672: a crisis of the bourgeoisie, the protagonist of modernity. Following Antonio Negri, Baruch Spinoza is the philosopher who was able to go beyond the crisis from within. After all, Spinoza is a thinker of immanent production and liberation, the thinker of the multitude. However, the critical year of 1672 remains in the shadows of Spinoza’s and Negri’s work. Both seem to consider 1672 under a certain ambiguity. It is precisely this ambiguity that we will trace in order to advance the philosophy of crisis and multitude. By understanding 1672, we will be able to orient ourselves better in modernity, together with Spinoza and Negri. This essay brings us back in the disproportion of history: revolution.

Objective/Context: To advance in the conceptualization of the State-bourgeoisie relationship, the paper returns to a classic debate in the Marxist tradition on the capitalist State. Methodology: In methodological terms, we carry out a critical analysis of the works of Ralph Miliband and Nicos Poulantzas —especially on the distinction of class power and State power, relative autonomy and State intervention in the economy— and we revisit the criticism of John Holloway. With this, we seek to understand the relationship between State and bourgeoisie, to explain the economic and political crisis of the forms of the capital relationship in Argentina, in 1998-2001. Conclusions: We conclude that there is a crisis of a specific form of State intervention in the economy, based on the expansion of market discipline, and, with it, both State power and capital power erodes. Originality: The article analyzes the Miliband-Poulantzas debate and, based on this, builds an explanation of the Argentinean crisis.

With the evidence of the organic crisis of capital, the bourgeois recompositing is expressed by a broad process of productive restructuring and redefinition of the mechanisms of mediation of the class conflict. This process encourages the formulation of various instruments aimed at training the new type of worker according to market demands. With this problem, we defined as object the project of creation and development of the higher technology courses. Our goal is to analyze the role of these courses in job training. For this, we take as a reference the formulations of the World Bank, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The results show the imposition of technological higher education as a strategy for training and shaping the working class to bourgeois sociability.

Establishing a relationship between the studies of Karl Marx and the research of Michel Foucault is not an easy task. There are readings describing the differences; others might emphasize the similarities while some others criticize Foucault’s developments from a Marxist perspective. In my present work I try to clarify the linkage between the disciplinary power and capitalism of Michel Foucault’s work within the context of the above-mentioned complexities. According to my proposed reading, capitalism does not explain the emergence of the disciplinary power, even if the production and accumulation of capital have applied disciplinary technics.

The paper aims to compare two authors of the Fin-de-Siècle from the German-speaking area (Thomas Mann and Hugo von Hofmannsthal) and tries to offer a specific “German” interpretation of contemporary phenomena like dandyism or estheticism. For the German area, Mann’s concept of the bourgeoisie as a spiritual form of life appears to be relevant. It is the idea of the middle way denying any sort of excess and connected with moral obligation. Therefore, German “decadence” is lacking an explicit anti-social gesture (dandyism) and is merely the expression of the process of “Entbürgerlichung”.

- Abstract
This article aims to analyze the situation in Portugal in the early nineteenth century, assessing the arguments that their elites used to justify the weakening of the country. Through bibliographic analysis, it is noticed that some like Palmela supported the ides that the country has lost it power due to the loss of Brazil. This opinion is opposed to an another, defended, especially later, by Antero de Quental and Oliveira Martins (members of the "Generation of 70'1): the weakness stemmed from its own historical setting; that create a weak bourgeoisie. These results lead one to conclude that the country's own historical analysis reflects two opposing positions: one that still adheres to the standards of the Old Regime and another that analyzes the world from the point of view of capitalism. This essay analyzes Sergei Eisenstein’s film ‘Strike’ (1925) as the primary source for a history of representations of obesity in Cinema. As a method, it used discursive analysis of the enunciation from a Foucauldian perspective. After watching the movie, four passages were considered relevant and two enunciations were established: (1) the bourgeois are corpulent and fat; and 2) the fat bourgeois are irascible. Regarding the characteristics attributed to obesity in terms of socioeconomics groups, both statements indicate a situation that is opposite to today’s. The results reinforce the view that there was politicization of corporeity in the historical process of inversion of values of the denominated condition – at that time, corpulence. As a conclusion, cinema may have been an ideological propaganda tool to spread the new values, which can be found in the contemporaneity., El objetivo de este ensayo fue analizar la película “La huelga” (1925), de Sergei Einsenstein, como fuente primaria de la historia de las representaciones de la obesidad en el cine. world crisis ,bourgeoisie ,capital ,Political science ,Political institutions and public administration (General) ,JF20-2112 - Abstract
The most dramatic and most publicized episodes of the world crisis have been financial: the subprime mortgage market collapse in 2007, the failure of Lehmann Brothers in September 2008 and more recently the Eurozone banking and sovereign debt crisis. They have of course each time had their own impact on production, trade and employment. But this does not make the crisis a “crisis of financialisation” or of “neoliberalism”, but of capitalism tout court at a given moment of its history. Its underlying causes are overproduction and over-accumulation at world level and an effective play of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall despite the recourse by capital to the offsetting factors. The length of the crisis, which is now named not a US ‘Great Recession” but a global slump (McNally, 2011), and the end of the phase where China and Brazil appeared to be decoupled from the world crisis are expressions of this.

Abstract This article investigates the relationship between the theoretical constructions of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and the main projects carried out decades later by President FHC. The hypothesis is confirmed that, except for the differences inherent to the different functions and different contexts, there is considerable continuity between the proposals developed by the theorist and the one carried out by the politician in terms of the development project. In order to verify these relationships, a bibliographic analysis of some of the author's main works is carried out, followed by an analysis of important government instruments, such as the government plan, the State Reform project and various constitutional amendments. A reflection on the relationship between theory and political change permeates the analysis, concluding by identifying the importance of conducting theoretical studies for a proper understanding of the political-institutional reality.

This article deals with the class society, the emergence of the working class, its recognition as such and the education. Starts with a brief discussion of the positivist and materialist conceptions of society and historical dialectics, following, discusses the tests made by the working class in its long history to win his consciousness to another. If, from ancient times we live in a class society, this period is not the consciousness of belonging to a class of workers and much less for an action based on and consistent with this membership. This achievement goes through several times and struggles, whether against the nobility and aristocracy or against the bourgeoisie, who rub shoulders with many struggles to overthrow the forces of the Old Regime. However, these struggles the working class was also realizing that if the bourgeoisie, at various times, was interested in making alliances incidental to the conquest of power, definitely had no interest in sharing it. Thus, in the successive struggles and betrayals of the bourgeoisie, the working class was learning not only not believe in the promises and illusions of his former "comrades", but also claim the right to give the direction of their lives and "their destination".

Abstract This article proposes a comparison between the vision of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Caio Prado Junior, identifying points of convergence between the ideas of both authors when compared with the interpretation of the PCB, which asserts the existence of feudal remnants in Brazil and consequently a revolution democratic - bourgeois content of anti-feudal and anti-imperialist with a focus on defense of national independence. For Caio Prado Júnior, there was never feudalism and Brazil has always been subject to imperialism and Fernando Henrique Cardoso argues the dependence of the national bourgeoisie against the international bourgeoisie. The point of divergence between both authors is the period in which Brazil is subordinate, and for Caio Prado Junior has since colonization, imperialism with its rule making and later times as the era of empire and republic, and for Fernando Henrique Cardoso from the 1960s with the installation of multinationals.

UIDB/00417/2020 UIDP/00417/2020 In this article we intend to analyse the definition of “palacete”, a typology of building generally defined as a small palace, associated with the rise and ennobling of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century. Although this issue has already been addressed by several art historians (França, 1990; Silva, 1997; Leal, 2005; Carita, 2017) it appears that, when we wish to clarify the identification parameters of this type of buildings, and when applied to the building reality, there are several fluctuations. This way, we propose to study the evolution of the word “palacete”, associating it with a systematic work on epochal sources that has never been carried out until today. Afterwards, we will try to identify the buildings that have been so called, the chronology of their construction and characterize their owners. After carrying out this extensive and critical inventory, we will return to the designation of “palacete” that should have several subtypes.

This paper seeks to historically analyze capitalism and its insertion in the Latin American subcontinent and in Brazil, mainly from the 1970s to the present. From this, we seek to show how the relations of the local bourgeois classes with the capitalist Center work in each pattern of accumulation in the subcontinent. A vision of the capitalist system as a single totality is defended here, in which the Global North’s reproduction of the system has a significant influence on the States of the South. In this way, we can show that the Latin American bourgeoisie and, more particularly, the Brazilian bourgeoisie has strong ties with the Center. They cannot be properly understood if only considered the political and social scenario circumscribed to the States that they belong to.

Ever since the introduction of the daguerreotype to the Río de la Plata region in 1840, formal studio portraits became daguerreotypists . main source of income. This novelty, which made it possible to obtain likenesses more exact than those produced by the portrait painters settled in the country by that time, was warmly welcomed by the Buenos Aires society. Nevertheless, at the peak of the daguerreotype period in the 1850.s, photography was an expensive luxury that only members of the higher classes could afford. Unlike today.s candid portraits and due to the technological limitations of the process, daguerreotype portraits required long exposure times and sophisticated poses. These first records can then be considered as documents, which allow us to reconstruct the mentality of the Río de la Plata bourgeoisie in the mid 19th Century. Through an elaborate mise-en-scene which resulted from the dialogue between photographer and subject, the members of the Buenos Aires high society conveyed to the future generations ideas, manners and opinions peculiar to their class.

Esta red nació en 1909 durante las negociaciones de un Tratado de Comercio entre Argentina y ChileThe vintage national party in Argentina is one of the most significant popular parties in the world. During three weeks of celebration, 600.000 people mobilize to see the artistic and cultural manifestations. These activities are well known because of the international mass media. Less visible is the socioeconomic net behind the party. This net was built by three actors: the local state, the wine industry entrepreneurship, and the people mobilized in the street around the wine party. The popular mobilization contributed to legitimate the wine bourgeoisie claims behind the federal state to be considered in national politics. This net was born in 1909, during the dealing of a Free Trade Agreement between Argentina and Chile

In this interdisciplinary article, merging History of Mentalities and Plastic Arts, we approach the painting The Arnolfini Portrait (1434), by Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441), as an illustration suggestive of the birth of Modern Europe and the bourgeois family, in Fourteenth century revival. Through the analysis of gestures, clothes, furniture and decorative objects, fixed by van Eyck, it is possible to verify how the bourgeoisie became the owner of power, occupied by the former nobility, from which he would inherit customs and labels. The union of the coat of arms with the bag, as distinctive symbols of power, implied the search for codes of civility and etiquette that would balance the values of public life and the demands of private life.

In Tolstoy's The Kreutzer sonata, the murderous husband reviews his crime in compulsive speech. In Dom Casmurro, a contemporary narrative to that, Bento Santiago tries to "tie the two ends of life" while reminiscing about the path that led to a social "murder" of the exiled wife. In this article I tried to focus on the revisiting of these traumatic experiences by their perpetuators in the light, especially, of Shoshana Felman, who analyzes real and literary judgments of distant and recent intimate feminicides; Roberto Schwarz's invitation to Machado’s readers to distrust; and Sigmund Freud, Lacan and Ricoeur's theories on trauma and memory. All this in the shadow, of course, of the understanding of the context of an incipient female emancipation in bourgeois society in the late nineteenth century whose judgment in favor of O. J. Relatório de estágio de mestrado em Ensino de História no 3.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário, O relatório de estágio que aqui se apresenta provém da implementação do Projeto de Intervenção Pedagógica Supervisionada (PIPS), desenvolvido no decorrer do Mestrado em Ensino de História no 3º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário, do Instituto de Educação da Universidade do Minho. The report presented is the result of the implementation of the supervised pedagogic intervention project developed under the Master’s in History Teaching in the Secondary School, on the Institute of Education of University of Minho. Within the framework of the supervised pedagogic intervention, we aimed to conduct a study regarding the development of Historical Evidence and Empathy with secondary school students through the use of visual aids such as époque photography (end of 19th century, beginning of 20th century). This study was conducted among first year students (10th grade) of Languages and Humanities in a secondary school in Braga. We aimed to answer the following questions: what were the preconceived ideas that the students had regarding the bourgeois society of the 19th century?; What was the students’ visual literacy regarding photography study? How do students explore the photography in terms of historical evidence? What questions are raised regarding the images? How does one develop historical evidence by exploring thisiconic source? What mechanisms intervene in students’ historical empathy while exploring the photography of a specific subject’s theme? How do students evaluate the photography potential for promoting historical evidence, historical empathy and time and space placement in history’s studying and learning?. The instruments of data collection were the result of multiple tasks that implied group and individual photography analysis as well as questionnaires of preconceived ideas and final thoughts and a metacognition exercise sheet. The material used was created based on constructivism and workshop-class principles focusing on the students’ knowledge construct through challenging tasks and historical documents analysis. The collected data was analyzed according to the Grounded Theory techniques. It allowed me to conclude that the students have progressed positively on photography analysis and have learnt to question visual sources while still maintaining reading mechanisms that approach photography as an accurate portrayal of the past times. In the Historical Empathy’s scope, students have showed analysis that are linked mainly to preconceived estereotipes of people from the past or they attribute anachronistic behaviors typical of their day to day lives.

The objective is to analyze, through Florestan Fernandes’ contribution, the origins of the process of bourgeois revolution in Brazil since the specific Brazilian social formation under the dependent capitalism. The hypothesis stresses that this process, initiated with the 1930 coup, refers to the colonial conformation of the Brazilian society and it has determined: the conditions of a typically capitalist society in the country; the milestone for the Brazilian “people”; the ways that class consciousness in Brazil is shaped, both that of the bourgeoise and that of the working class; and the possibilities for social change as decolonization, by conditioning the type of possible democracy. This is an interdisciplinary work on History of Brazilian Economic Thought that follows the method of the controversies of economic thought developed by Malta et al. (2011).

ABSTRACT In this paper, I analyze a set of six trading cards belonging to Liebig’s Extract of Meat Co. long-standing marketing campaign. The critical analysis of promotional texts produced at the turn of the 20th century offer meaningful insights on the discursive mechanisms that contributed to the hegemonization of bourgeois capitalism. Unlike other forms of advertising, trading cards are not rapidly discarded and forgotten; on the contrary, they can detach themselves from the advertised products to become part of popular discourses of mass instruction. As both products and producers of capitalist ideologies, ads are a privileged site of inscription of capitalism, and thus lend themselves to a critical analysis. My analysis shows how the selected texts draws on and textures the discourses of progress, inculcated as colonialist beliefs and triggering an actional chain whereby, even before they actually obtained the cards, capitalist actions and beliefs are enacted.

Abstract The theme of the present article is the III Brazillian Congress of Social Workers (CBAS), four decades after its execution. We introduce two hypotheses into the debate: the first suggests that the main legacy of the III CBAS emerges on the new progressive horizon’s professional culture, forged by the profession during the crisis of the military dictatorship of 1964, which allowed the elaboration of a professional program compromised with human emancipation; the second one alludes to how much the referring legacy is confronted by a new phase of bourgeois domination in the current conjuncture, in which the diffusion of a reactionary conservatism, of philo-fascist character, is fundamental for the implementation of an ultraneoliberal agenda in the country.

This article presents partial results of a documentary-bibliographic research dedicated to the understanding of the details of the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) and the Novo Ensino Medio (NEM) in dialogue with the historical-structuring aspects of Brazilian education. The mediation of the dependent capitalism category, here in Florestan Fernandes's terms, is of the utmost importance, especially in order to understand the unity of the present and past educational, economic, political, social and ideological aspects of Brazil's economic and social formation. With the contribution of understandings sought in the theoretical framework left by the Brazilian sociologist, such as those referring to the specificity of the bourgeois revolution in Brazil and the contradictions erected within dependent capitalism, it is argued that the BNCC and the NEM present features common to the various reforms and anti-reform measures leveraged by the Brazilian bourgeoisie throughout our history, especially in moments of crisis. It is concluded that, in spite of the obscurantist peculiarities of the current conjuncture, it reflects in all scopes the revitalization and the deepening of dependence, to which the educational sphere is no exception: in this also the measures present the exacerbated contradictory, antidemocratic and retrograde faces, characteristic of dependent capitalism.

This article proposes a comparison between the vision of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Caio Prado Júnior, identifying points of convergence between the ideas of both authors when compared with the interpretation of the PCB, which asserts the existence of feudal remnants in Brazil and consequently a revolution democratic-bourgeois content of anti-feudal and anti-imperialist with a focus on defense of national independence. For Caio Prado Júnior, there was never feudalism and Brazil has always been subject to imperialism and Fernando Henrique Cardoso argues the dependence of the national bourgeoisie against the international bourgeoisie. The point of divergence between both authors is the period in which Brazil is subordinate, and for Caio Prado Júnior has since colonization, imperialism with its rule making and later times as the era of Empire and Republic, and for Fernando Henrique Cardoso from the 1960s with the installation of multinationals. This article intends to approach the work of Daniel Bensaïd exposing the main reflections and critical contributions to the instrumental use of Human Rights. Using the deductive repertoire, and based on the textual revision by the militant-philosopher, the article (i) demonstrates how the theme of Human Rights crosses the work of Bensaïd, marked by the conjuncture and articulating with other great themes of his life, exposing the elementary bases of his formulation; (ii) it shows how much Human Rights are perceived in his work as an unfinished bourgeois promise, which demand its recognition as a progressive, at the same time limited, landmark of the political dispute in modernity; (iii) highlights how it manifested itself in the course of the French Revolution in particular with regard to non-owners, enslaved and women; also signaling (iv) the way in which at different socio-historical moments the defense of Human Rights is instrumentalized as a way of imperialist affirmation, demanding particular and careful approaches in contemporary times, especially in view of the escalation of what he called “ethical war”.

This paper analyzes the tense accommodation between patrimonialism and bureaucratic capitalist model in the late nineteenth century in Brazil, based on the insights contained in the book Senhora (1875) by José de Alencar. At first, the article analyzes the interpretations of Brazil from Weberian perspective, and then, discuss the process of accommodation between tradition and modernity in the historical context of the Brazilian Empire contained in this work of the novelist. The hypothesis which guides the text is based on the idea that patrimonialism, present in Brazil since the colonial period, reached the peak of its influence and also a process of accommodation with the rational-legal order during the Empire. José de Alencar would portray on the characters and in the plot of this work both the elements of this accommodation and his personal opposition to the advancement of the bourgeois order over the patrimonial order.
