ABSTRACT: An experiment was conducted to assess the crop yield, nutritional composition, and mycotoxin contamination in different corn hybrids. The impact of these variables on the feed formulation cost of starter diets for broilers was also evaluated. A total of 150 samples from 50 corn hybrids was obtained from a field experiment. Nutrients were predicted by NIRS and mycotoxins were analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and corn hybrids were grouped using Scott-Knott test at 5% significance. Pearson correlation analysis was performed among the main variables. Most of the variables were different among corn hybrids (P < 0.05), with exception of available phosphorus (Av. P), damaged grains, and DON and ZEA contaminations (P > 0.05). Crop yield had a positive correlation (P < 0.05) with feed formulation cost (r = 0.35) and a negative correlation (P < 0.05) with crude protein (-0.42), digestible (dig.) Thr (-0.42), and dig. Met+Cys (-0.42). The feed cost correlated positively (P < 0.05) with FUM (0.33) and ZEA (0.29), and negatively (P < 0.05) with crude protein (-0.74). Different corn hybrids vary in their productivity, nutritional content and mycotoxins contamination. It was demonstrated that an increase in the crop yield might be related to a reduction in corn nutritional content and quality, resulting in an increase in feed formulation cost.

The use of adequate plant density in combination with the amino acid application can play a decisive role in achieving optimal yields in sesame crops. In order to evaluate the effects of the influence of plant densities and the application of amino acids on the growth and yield of sesame seeds in the rainy season, an experiment was carried out between June and October 2023. Three doses of amino acids (AV) were examined: without VA, 0.25 and 0.50 L ha-1 and two plant densities (25,000 and 29,000 plants/ha), distributed in Split-plots, in a randomized block design with three replications. The results showed that plant densities influence the growth and yield of the sesame crop, the density of 25,000 plants ha-1 influenced the number of plant leaves, leaf area and the AF/NH ratio, while the density of 29,000 plants ha-1 showed greater plant height and yield. Additionally, the dose of 0.25 L ha-1 promoted the growth of sesame plants at the density of 25,000 plants/ha and a higher yield at the density of 29,000 plants/ha, while the dose of 0 .50 L ha-1 of amino acids showed greater productivity at the density of 25,000 plants/ha. The results of this study suggest that the use of high plant densities in combination with the foliar application of amino acids is an viable strategy to increase sesame productivity in the rainy season.

ABSTRACT The objective was to determine the standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIAAD) in soybean meal (SBM), corn + SBM, wheat + SBM and a protein free diet (PFD) associated with phytase. A total of 672 Cobb 500 (493±10g) male chicks were distributed in a completely randomized design with twelve treatments (PFD, PFD + SBM, PFD + corn + SBM and PFD + wheat + SBM, supplemented with 0, 500 and 1000 FTU), eight replicates and seven birds per cage from 14 to 23 days. Phytase supplementation at 500 FTU increased the SIAAD of methionine in SBM (P0.05) for the SIAAD of methionine, arginine and histidine in wheat + SBM as the phytase supplementation. Cell walls of seaweeds contain a wide number of organic and inorganic constituents, of which polysaccharides have important biological activity. Some researchers suggest that polysaccharides from seaweeds can behave as biotic elicitors in viticulture, triggering the synthesis of phenolic compounds in leaves and grape berries. The mechanism of action of seaweeds after a foliar application to grapevines is not fully understood but it is discussed in this review. An overview of the recent research focused on the effects of seaweeds foliar applications on grapevine productivity, on grape and wine quality is included as well as a short-term future perspective for the research in this field.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of chromium yeast and digestible lysine levels on the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. Sixty-four barrows with an initial weight of 72.77 ± 7.20 kg and final weight of 119.44 ± 9.47 kg were used, distributed in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme, with two levels of chromium yeast (Cr0: 0 ppb and Cr800: 800 ppb) and two levels of digestible lysine (L0: recommended level and L+10%: 10%). The recorded air temperature of 30.9 ± 3.7 ºC during the experimental period was considered as heat stress. Performance variables were not influenced (P>0.05); however, L+10% showed an increase (P0.05) by the chromium or digestible lysine levels. Supplementation with 800 ppb of yeast chromium and a 10% increase in the level of digestible lysine, isolated or associated, did not improve the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs, subjected to high ambient temperatures.

Tannins are a diverse group of plant phenolic compounds. Condensed tannins (CTs) represent a major subgroup of tannins and were extracted from tilia (Tilia L.) flowers and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) leaves. These extracts were examined for their effects on the metabolic profile of chicken caeca. By using in vitro, a nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), which was combined with multivariate statistics, the current study was applied for the first time to investigate how three different CT compositions, procyanidins (PC) and/or prodelphinidins (PD) units influenced the metabolic end-products in caecal contents of chickens. In the presence of tannins, glutamate, leucine, lysine, pyroglutamate, phenylalanine, proline, and sarcosine were significantly decreased. CT extracts significantly influenced the fermentation, increasing the concentrations of some fatty acids such as acetate, butyrate, and propionate whereas. In contrast, lactate decreased between the treatments. This study identified the key structural features of CTs that contain either high molar proportions of PD or PC, which might be useful to improve the efficiency of feed utilization in chickens.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the partial replacement effect on body measurements (body mass, muscle thickness, and fat thickness) of the concentrated fraction of foals’ diet with a protein supplement containing whey protein, glutamine, and lysine during the post-weaning period. Eighteen Mangalarga Marchador foals were randomly divided into two groups in the post-weaning phase, with nine animals each in the control group (CG) and the group receiving protein supplementation (WG). Based on 4% of their body weight (BW), the CG animals received a diet with roughage to concentrate in a ratio of 50:50, which composed of Cynodon sp. hay and a 15% crude protein (CP) commercial horse ration. The WG diet consisted of the same amount of hay used for the CG diet, half the amount of concentrate used in the CG diet, and 102 g of a protein supplement containing whey protein, glutamine, and lysine. During the experiment, five evaluations were performed, starting on the day of weaning (day 0), followed by evaluations conducted at 7, 14, 28, and 42 days after weaning. Body measurements, body mass, and thickness of the fat and muscle layers were assessed at each time point. The substitution of a portion of the commercial diet with protein supplement containing whey protein, glutamine, and lysine did not cause changes in the weight gain or linear measurements of Mangalarga Marchador foals during the post-weaning period; however, the change in diet increased muscle thickness and decreased fat thickness when compared to animals in the control group.

Insects are an important source of proteins, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and lipids. In this context, the present study evaluated the essential fatty acid profile of the larval oil of Rhynchophorus palmarum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) subjected to three plant tissue diets: Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae), Oenocarpus bataua (Arecaceae), and Jacaratia digitata (Caricaceae). Five adult individuals, 2 males, and 3 females were captured for their reproduction in captivity. The hatched larvae were subjected to the three diets for 45 days. After this period, extraction was carried out and the fatty acid profile of the oil was determined. Being oleic monounsaturated fatty acid (18:1) and palmitic saturated fatty acid (16:0), which are found in greater abundance for the three diets. Regarding essential fatty acids, linoleic (18:2) and alpha-linolenic (18:3) fatty acids were detected in concentrations of 1.96 Â 0.028 and 1.14 Â 0.007%, for the diet of Mauritia flexuosa, 0.67 Â 0.007 and 0.43 Â 0.035%, for the diet of Oenocarpus bataua, and 0.76 Â 0.000 and 0.29 Â 0.007%, for the diet of Jacaratia digitata, respectively. The results show that diets influence the type of fatty acid metabolized and its concentration. The larva is a source of monounsaturated fatty acids such as oleic (omega 9) and palmitoleic (omega 7) and of the essential fatty acids linoleic and alpha-linolenic precursors of the fatty acids of the omega 6 and omega 3 families. ABSTRACT: A meta-analysis was carried out to evaluate the recommended levels of digestible lysine and its influence on the productive performance of primiparous lactating sows. The database consisted of 26 publications, 138 diets and 3,820 sows was developed from articles on the association between, lysine, crude protein and lactating primiparous sows. Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) cultivars regarding plant development and the quantity and quality of soluble proteins in their grains, for breeding purposes. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized experimental design, with the Paulistinha, BRS Novaera, Epace 10, and BR 17-Gurguéia cultivars. Leaf area, shoot fresh and dry matter, leaf protein content, number of nodules, and nodule and root dry matter were evaluated. In mature grains, soluble fractions and soluble amino acids were also quantified, and the electrophoretic analysis was performed with protein denaturation. There were no differences between cultivars for the plant development variables. However, protein quantity and quality in the grain differed between cultivars. 'BRS Novaera' and 'BR 17-Gurguéia' showed a higher soluble protein content in their grains. 'BRS Novaera' exhibited higher contents of two soluble sulfur amino acids - methionine and cysteine - , not differing from 'BR 17-Gurguéia' regarding methionine content. Both cultivars presented protein band polymorphism, but BRS Novaera had an extra band for albumins. The BRS Novaera and BR 17-Gurguéia cultivars have the highest content of soluble proteins in their grains and the greatest protein polymorphism, which makes them suitable for improving the nutritional quality of cowpea.

This paper is a review of proteomics and mass spectrometric techniques used for the study of historical textiles and garments. First applied on archaeological animal fibers over a decade ago, proteomics has made important contributions to the analysis of ancient proteins and to cultural heritage studies. The field of proteomics has the potential to give a better understanding of the modes of fabrication of ancient textiles, their composition and pathways of degradation, as well as the development of animal fibers through domestication and breeding. This review summarizes current analytical methods, describes the different sources of animal fibers and their biomolecular characteristics and methods of analysis, and finally presents the main applications of proteomics to historical clothing.

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to determine optimal dietary histidine requirement of grow-out Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, based on muscle development, expression of muscle-growth-related genes, and blood parameters. Fish (n = 288, initial body weight of 64.17±0.53 g) were fed extruded diets with graded levels of histidine (4.23, 5.44, 7.17, 8.91, and 11.57 g kg−1), containing approximately 289 g kg−1 crude protein and 3565 kcal kg−1 digestible energy. The study followed a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replicates each, for 65 days. There was a quadratic effect of dietary histidine on final body weight, feed conversion, and net protein utilization, and the best values were optimized at 8.09, 7.88, and 7.33 g kg−1, respectively. Feed intake, hepatosomatic index, survival, body composition, and blood parameters of total protein, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were not affected by dietary treatments. Predominance of hypertrophic growth and higher mRNA levels of myogenin and MyoD were observed in fish fed histidine from 5.44 to 11.57 g kg−1 compared with fish fed histidine at 4.23 g kg−1. The mRNA expression of myostatin was not affected by dietary treatments. The dietary requirement of histidine for grow-out Nile tilapia was determined at 8.09 g kg−1, considering growth performance, muscle development, and gene expression responses.

ABSTRACT: Response surface methodology was used to determine optimum conditions for extraction of protein from pumpkin seed meal. A central composite rotational design (CCRD) including independent variables such, pH and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) content was used. Maximum yield was obtained at a central point of CCRD, with STMP content and pH of 4% and 4.5, respectively. These conditions resulted in protein yield of 50.04 g of soluble protein from extract/100 g pumpkin seed. The optimization of pH and STMP content allowed obtaining a product with a high protein concentration (62.56 g 100 g-1), digestibility (62.03 g 100 g-1) and concentration of essential amino acids (27.26 g 100 g-1). Regarding the polyphenols concentration, phosphorylated protein concentrate from pumpkin seed and the pumpkin seed meal presented 13.11 g 100 g-1 and 23.19 g 100 g-1, respectively. The adequacy of the model was confirmed by extracting the protein under optimum values. These results help in designing the process of optimal protein extraction from pumpkin seeds.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of glutamine and threonine supplementation on the ileal mucosa of broilers aged 21-42 days. Six-hundred and forty-one-day old chicks of the Cobb Slow lineage were utilized in this study. From 1 to 21 days of age, the chicks received a commercial diet; and after 22 days, the broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 ? 4 factorial scheme (challenge and diet), with 4 replications and 20 chicks per experimental unit. At 22 days of age, the challenged broilers received a commercial vaccine against coccidiosis. A commercial diet was utilized as control and three other diets were formulated with reduced crude protein (-3%), and were corrected with the addition of glutamine (Gln) and glutamic acid (Glu) as non-specific nitrogen sources, and finally supplemented with L-Threonine (Thr) at 0.70, 0.80, and 0.85% digestible threonine, respectively. At 28 days of age, diets with Gln/Glu + Thr resulted in greater ileal villi lengths. Challenge with Eimeria sp. reduced the number of goblet cells and increased the duodenal and jejunal crypt depths. At 42 days of age, an interaction was observed between diet and challenge in relation to ileal villi length; better results were observed in the challenged broilers that received 0.85% Gln/Glu + Thr. The mucosal morphology in the ileal villi extremities was preserved in the challenged broilers that received higher Thr levels in their diets. The results suggested that the inclusion of glutamine and threonine affected the morphometry and mucosa of the ileum, thereby improving the mucosal quality.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutrient digestibility, zootechnical performance, and bone quality parameters of broilers fed a diet containing increasing levels of the macroalgae Kappaphycus alvarezii from one to 21 days of age. A total of 150 Cobb 500® broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments, six replications, and five birds per replicate. The total excreta collection method was applied from the 15th and 20th day for the metabolism trial. The following bone quality parameters were assessed: the Seedor index, bone strength, and bone ashes. Dry ground macroalgae were added to the feed in the levels 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%; replacing the inert kaolin. Incorporation of Kappaphycus alvarezii did not influence performance parameters, bone quality parameters, or the coefficients of retention for bone ash and phosphorus. As for feed digestibility, decreases (p<0.05) were observed in apparent metabolizable energy and the coefficients of digestibility for dry matter, crude protein, and crude energy with the inclusion of algae. The algae Kappaphycus alvarezii shows potential as an additive in broiler feed, but a possible decrease in digestibility deserves consideration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two consecutive experiments were conducted using 480 pigs each with six replicate pens per treatment and 10 pigs per pen to evaluate the effect of standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys (0.81, 0.91, 1.01, and 1.11%) in diets containing ractopamine (RAC; 10 or 20 mg kg-1) on growth and carcass traits of barrows in a commercial production system. There were no effects of either RAC levels or the interaction between RAC and SID Lys levels on any of the performance and carcass variables. No lack of fit was detected in the response surface analysis. From d 0 to 21, there was no effect of SID Lys levels on ADFI. However, as SID Lys increased, there was a linear increase in ADG and G:F. As SID Lys increased, the ADG, G:F, loin depth, and lean percentage improved linearly from d 0 to 28, with no effect on ADFI and backfat thickness. In conclusion, performance and carcass traits of pigs fed RAC (10 or 20 mg kg-1) in a commercial finishing facility are improved by up to 1.11% SID Lys supplementation. There is no additional benefit of feeding 20 mg kg-1 RAC in comparison with 10 mg kg-1 RAC.

In order to evaluate the effect of a growth promoter on the productivity performance and seed-quality in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crops, two experiments were carried out, one in the field and under controlled conditions. In the field experiments, a Latin square design was used for four treatments as follows: control, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0 l.ha-1, respectively, where yield components were evaluated. The seeds used in the controlled conditions experiment were from prior trials, in a totally randomized design, at the dosages above mentioned. Seed germination and seedling growth were evaluated. In the field experiments, the product had a stimulating effect on the production. The highest yields were reached with the 0.8 and 1.0 l.ha-1 dosages in number 1, with values of 3.09 and 3.02 t.ha-1, and in number 2, the treatment with the best results was 1.0 l.ha-1, with a yield of 2.07 t.ha-1. In germination, there were significant differences among variables only in the first assessment at three days after planting. The best performance in seedling growth and in dry matter production was the treatment with seeds from the 0.5 l.ha-1 dosage in experiment 1. In addition, in number 2, performance among variables was similar. Therefore, VIUSID agro improved the bean yield performance and did not affect later seed germination nor initial seedling growth.

In this article, we carried out an analysis of the main aspects related to iron metabolism, as the understanding on this subject has been greatly intensified in recent years. The understanding of this subject has been greatly increased in recent years, while a simple harmony between the processes of absorption, metabolization and distribution of this ion are already sufficient to guarantee the supply of such nutrient in our body. The identification of certain genes that encode specific proteins participating in such homeostasis has stimulated the development of several studies on the subject in the current scientific environment. Tilapia is one of the most produced species in the world, however, the requirement for some amino acids is still unknown for this species. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the productive performance, centesimal composition and muscle growth of Nile tilapia fed diets supplemented with arginine after the sexual reversal phase. Three hundred Nile tilapia larvae were used, with average weight and length of 0.50 ± 0.02 g and 3.17 ± 0.19 cm, respectively, distributed in 20 experimental hapas and entirely randomized experimental design, containing five treatments and four repetitions, being the experimental units composed by a hapa containing 15 fishes. Five diets supplemented with arginine, in the proportion of 13.60; 15.90; 18.10; 20.40 and 22.70 g kg-1. The ingredients were ground in a hammer mill with 0.5 mm diameter sieve, weighed, homogenized, moistened for further processing in extruder and subjected to oven drying with forced ventilation at 55°C for 24 h. After drying, the ration was ground to obtain smaller diameter granules, so that the fish could feed. Feeding was performed four times a day and offered until apparent satiety of the animals for a period of 72 days. The data obtained were subjected to regression analysis at 5% significance level. There was no significant difference for the parameters of productive performance, centesimal composition and frequency of muscle fiber distribution of tilapia fed with experimental diets. Supplementation with 13.6 g arginine per kg diet was sufficient for Nile tilapia performance after sexual reversal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agronomic improvements in grain yield and quality of wheat crops could be obtained through the application of strategies, such as using foliar fungicides with fertilizers, to protect the leaves against pathogens and delay senescence during grain filling. However, few studies have reported the effect of these practices on wheat, although these treatments could represent a new method of increasing wheat production and profits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of foliar fertilizer, applied alone or in combination with a fungicide, on the photochemical, biochemical, and nutritional parameters of wheat plants. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions in a 2 × 3 factorial design (fungicide × foliar fertilizer) with four replications. The fungicide treatment used was azoxystrobin + cyproconazole + mineral oil; the control was left untreated. The foliar fertilizer was used at two different rates, and the control was not treated. Plants were sprayed at the GS29/GS30, GS45, and GS60 growth stages, and the plants were assessed ten days after the last spray. Chlorophyll a fluorescence, the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), and electron transport rate were positively influenced by fertilizer. Fertilizer spraying significantly increased the leaf pigment content (chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids) and the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium concentration in flag leaves. When used in mixture, the fertilizer mitigates the stresses generated by the fungicide.

ABSTRACT Sustainable production of adequate quantities of food to support a growing human population is a worldwide goal. Under current feeding conditions in the United States, dairy cattle convert dietary nitrogen to milk nitrogen with 25% efficiency. The remaining 75% is excreted, which contributes to air and water quality problems and reduces economic performance of the industry. Efficiency could be improved to 29% if protein was given to just meet current NRC requirements. Additional improvements may be achievable, but only with improved knowledge of amino acid (AA) requirements. The current metabolizable protein requirement model overestimates true requirements due to lack of knowledge of AA supply and requirements and to intrinsic limitations in system data and assumptions. Existing protein supply models based on passage and degradation rates are biased, which undermines predictions of AA supply. The use of an equation driven solely by protein solubility of each ingredient in the diet with no consideration of the effects of passage rate yielded unbiased predictions with significant improvements in precision. However, this still leaves a problem in predicting the AA composition of the ruminally undegraded protein (RUP). Current models generally assume that RUP AA composition equals the parent ingredient composition, but assessments of RUP AA composition indicate that this is false. Thus, bias is being introduced into predictions of the absorbed AA supply, which hampers derivation of estimates of AA digestion and absorption from the small intestine. Emerging isotope-based methods hold promise in allowing assessment of AA availability from individual ingredients in vivo, which will allow construction of a database of true ingredient AA bioavailabilities. These efforts will eventually allow development of more robust predictions of AA supply. On the AA requirement side, numerous data indicate that the efficiency of metabolizable protein use for lactation is variable and maximally 45%, whereas most models assume an efficiency of 65% or greater. The efficiencies of individual AA are centered on the protein efficiency value with those lower in efficiency, likely being provided in large excess. A better representation of the use efficiency of individual AA would allow improvements in overall animal N efficiency. Variable efficiency is driven by regulatory mechanisms that control protein synthesis in response to the supply of energy and individual AA and circulating concentrations of hormones and these drivers act independently and additively. Under this theory, protein synthesis can respond to nutrients other than the one identified as most limiting. Reflecting this regulation in our requirement models will allow better prediction of AA efficiency and enable construction of diets that minimize excess of individual AA by optimizing the energy and hormonal signals to improve N efficiency. Models of such an interacting system have been developed and shown to be superior in performance to models based on current paradigms.

The objective of the present study was to develop models for predicting live weight from the length-weight relationship and body composition of Nile tilapia. A total of 3,000 juvenile fish (initial weight = 28.6±4.16 g and standard length = 13.8±0.16 cm) were distributed into three circular cages (12 m3 each). The fish were hand-fed extruded diets containing 332 g kg-1 of crude protein and 3,230 kcal kg-1 of digestible energy, until apparent satiety, twice daily, for 100 days. Twelve fish were collected from each cage every 20 days for measurements of body weight and length, and proximate composition analysis; statistical analysis was conducted using linear regression. The value of the slope b and the intercept for the length-weight relationship were 3.0604 and 0.0203, respectively. The prediction equations obtained for body moisture (MO), crude protein (CP), crude lipid (CL), and ash against body weight (BW) in g/100 g of fish were as follows: MO = 70.0090 - 0.0071BW; CP = 13.7550 + 0.0037BW; CL = 9.2636 + 0.0057BW; and ash = 4.2392 - 0.0024BW. It is possible to develop equations to predict body weight and composition, which can be used to control the production of Nile tilapia and improve its commercial value.

The aim of this study was to obtain products (surimi and fishburger) from mechanically separated meat (MSM) of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and evaluate its aspects chemical, microbiological, nutritional and sensory attributes. For fishburger preparation the MSM was submitted to successive washes cycles, to obtaining a protein concentrate defined as surimi. The composition of MSM and surimi was determined by analysis of moisture, protein, lipid and amino acid profile. Microbiological analysis were performed for Staphylococcus sp., coliforms at 45 ° C and Salmonella sp. Sensory analysis of fishburger was performed by the global acceptance testing, for evaluation of parameters such as general appearance, odor, flavor and texture. The evolution of the genetic improvement of broiler strains allowed significant gains in weight gain, breast yield and feed conversion, making the poultry industry one of the most competitive production chains in the country. Considering that nutrition is responsible for the largest portion of production costs, the formulation of balanced diets is of utmost importance to provide maximum food efficiency and better productive performance. The emergence of industrial amino acids at affordable prices, allowed the elaboration of rations based on the concept of ideal protein, which aims to reduce the crude protein content of rations and provide an amino acid profile that more closely meets the needs of poultry, thus improving nutrient utilization and decreasing the excretion of dietary nitrogen in the environment. These effects provide greater economic benefits to producers and less environmental pollution. However, in order for the objectives of the ideal protein concept to be achieved, it is important to have accurate knowledge of amino acid requirements, to meet the order of limitation, and to provide an adequate balance between nutritionally essential and non-essential amino acids. Therefore, the objective of this review was to demonstrate the importance of amino acids in the formulation of broiler diets, as well as an approach to the general aspects of the first limiting amino acids for birds, being methionine and lysine. ABSTRACT A nitrogen balance test was performed to evaluate the individual responses of growing pigs to threonine intake. Eight commercial barrows were used (body weight ranging from 15 to 20 kg). A dose-response study was performed, in which the threonine supply increased in seven equidistant steps (the seven dietary threonine levels ranged from 50 to 120% of the requirements) every three days for each pig. The levels of all other amino acids were 20% higher than the tested amino acid. Nitrogen retention as a function of threonine intake was calculated per individual and per group (NLIN and NLMixed, respectively) using a linear plateau model. The highest break point value was 42.42 g of threonine intake (the most demanding individual), whereas the lowest value was 34.16 g (the least demanding individual), corresponding to a difference of 19%. In terms of N retention, the highest plateau value was 66.71 g and the lowest was 49.48 g, with a difference of 25%. There was no significant correlation between slope and plateau values or between slope and break point values. When using the model in which all parameters were random effects, the variations in threonine intake and nitrogen retention were 1.68±1.30 and 0.01±0.10 g, respectively, and no variance in the slope of the curve was detected. The average daily threonine intake values for the maximum response obtained in the group, as calculated by the NLIN and NLMixed procedures, were 13.96 and 14.02 g/day, respectively. The threonine intake for the maximum N retention between individuals ranged from 34.16 to 42.42 g, corresponding to a difference of 19%. The current recommended intake to optimize N retention is 14.02 g/day. The group responses obtained by the NLMixed procedures are very similar to those estimated by the NLIN procedure (all individuals).

Amino acids constitute a source for yeast metabolism and, thus are of paramount importance to wine flavour and aroma. Their concentrations in must depend greatly on grape variety. The aim of this work was to describe the amino acids profile of two white grapevine varieties: ‘Godello’ and ‘Treixadura’, produced in Galicia (NW Spain). The study was carried out over two consecutive vintages (2012 and 2013). Amino acids profiles of the musts were determined using HPLC. Although the musts from the two varieties presented common major and minor amino acids, the greatest contents were observed for ‘Treixadura’. ‘Godello’ and ‘Treixadura’ varieties were arginine-accumulators, since this was the amino acid found at the highest level in the musts from the two cultivars. Amino acids contents were higher in 2012 than in 2013, likely due to climate differences between years.

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate, respectively, nitrogen balance (NB) and the productive performance of 31-to-50-day-old rabbits subjected to different levels of lysine and methionine+cystine (met+cys). Seventy-five animals were randomly distributed in 5 × 3 blocks (five levels of lysine: 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5 g/kg combined with three levels of met+cys: 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 g/kg), with 15 treatments and five replications for the NB assay. The assay lasted 14 days: 10 days for acclimatization and four days for feces and urine collection. Increasing met+cys levels had a quadratic effect on the nitrogen excreted in urine (NU): the lowest excretion was found at the dietary level of 5.9 g/kg met+cys. Increasing lysine levels also affected NU and nitrogen retained daily (NR): the lowest NU was obtained at the dietary level of 7.28 g/kg lysine, and maximum NR was found at 7.24 g/kg lysine. Increases in met+cys levels in the diets affected neither performance nor carcass characteristics of rabbits up to 50 days of age. On the other hand, body weight at 50 days, daily weight gain and feed conversion of rabbits slaughtered at 50 days had a quadratic effect as the lysine levels increased. The best results were found at 7.5, 7.38 and 7.36 g/kg lysine. Lysine and met+cys levels of 7.4 and 5.0 g/kg in the diet are recommended for 31-to-50-day-old rabbits.

Two-hundred sixteen white laying hens were used to assess the ideal ratio of digestible threonine:lysine in diets for laying hens at 24 to 40 weeks of age. Birds were assigned to a randomized block design, with six treatments, six replicates per treatment and six birds per experimental unit. The cage was used as the blocking criterion. Experimental diets contained different digestible threonine:digestible lysine ratios (65, 70, 75, 80, 85 and 90%) with 142 g/kg of crude protein. Experimental diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric with different contents of L-glutamic acid. Feed intake (g/hen/d), egg production (%), egg weight (g), egg mass (g/hen/d), feed conversion ratio (kg/dozen and kg/kg egg), eggshell weight (g), albumen weight (g), yolk weight (g) and body weight gain (g) were assessed. The maximum egg production was observed at 78% digestible threonine:digestible lysine ratio, while the best values of feed conversion ratio (kg/dozen egg) and feed conversion ratio (kg/kg of egg) were observed at 77.6% and 75%, respectively. Feed intake, egg mass and egg contents (yolk, albumen and eggshell) were not affected by treatments. The estimated digestible threonine:digestible lysine ratio of Hy-Line W36 laying hens at 24 to 40 weeks of age is 78%, corresponding to 5.70 g/kg of dietary digestible threonine.
