This article analyses the Netflix series Atypical to evaluate the journey of the protagonist Sam, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), in his search for identity and autonomy. ASD is characterised by compromised social interactions, communication and restricted behaviour patterns. Netflix's Atypical portrays Sam on his journey through the transition to adulthood, facing problems common to any young adult, with little focus on the difficulties imposed by his clinical condition. Thus, through the reconstruction of the hero's journey and the actor's work as a communicative system, the series enables a discussion of themes such as identity, representation and stereotype breaking. In conclusion, it was observed that Sam completes his independence at the end of the series, but there may be intrinsic limitations to the self; the figure of the actor can produce cultural changes, renewing the concept of "autistic spectrum" in audiovisual narratives.
