The state of Paraná is the third largest milk producer in Brazil, an activity that has an important social and economic role. In this study, we sought to compare the structural and production characteristics of farmers who do and do not participate in milk quality improvement programs defined by the industry. Data collection was performed using a form applied to 42 milk producers located in the mesoregions West, Midwest, Center North, Northwest and Southwest of the State of Paraná, which were divided into two groups: G1 (n=28) those who do not participate in quality improvement programs and G2 (n=14) those who do. Producers participating in milk quality improvement programs had a greater number of employees in the dairy activity and a greater volume of milk produced (p < 0.05). In addition, they used the pre and post-dipping technique more frequently and had better knowledge of the parameters for improving milk quality, such as total bacterial count, somatic cell count, protein and fat. These producers had the offer of technical assistance as the main stimulus for participation in the programs. In this way, programs for improving the quality of milk established by the industry can represent an important strategy to encourage farmers to increase the volume and quality of milk produced.
