The purpose of this paper is to show how Bibliometrics is a quantitative study of scientific production, dissemination and use of information in different fields of information: bibliometric indexes are analyses and standards of measure for printed intellectual authoring, crucial to librarian management. The impact factor is the by-product of the statistic analysis that quantifies ranking and other categories of periodic publications -- the mathematical calculation of the impact factor is shown and exemplified. We suggest the application of the impact factor to monographs. For this purpose we will mention the pioneering studies of Urban Cristóval of the Universitat de Barcelona. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
