Purpose: To conduct a systematic review of the scientific literature studying the relationship between vocal production and auditory perception in cochlear implant users., Research Strategies: This is an integrative systematic review. The plattforms/databases Bireme, SciELO, Cochrane, Scopus and Web of Science were consulted and the descriptors used were voice, cochlear implant and auditory perception., Selection Criteria: Original papers published in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese involving the study of vocal production and auditory perception in cochlear implant users were selected and there was no restriction about year of publication of the articles., Data Analysis: The studies selected were analyzed according to the author, location, year and publication of the article, as well as for their sample size, type of vocal production and auditory perception assessment and for its major findings and recommendation grade/level of scientific evidence., Results: The results suggest the existence of positive relationship between vocal production and auditory perception in cochlear implant users, and indicate that the deployment time has a positive influence in this relationship., Conclusion: None of the selected studies were rated at level 1 of scientific evidence or grade A of recommendation, which is related to the methodological approach that can go with this subject matter. There is great lack of publications relating auditory perception and speech production in cochlear implant users. This gap is even greater when it comes to the adult population.

Experimental studies in the field of speech perception have demonstrated, since the 1950s, that speech perception is, fundamentally, an instance of categorical processing. Accordingly, the phoneme has been conceived of as a theoretical-descriptive linguistic unit and, simultaneously, as a perceptual category. In this paper, we shall see that, even before the more recent experimental methods, traditional views - such as the British school of descriptive phonetics and the American first structuralists - had anticipated some important aspects of the categorical perspectives on the phoneme. We shall defend that a broader view on this unit, based on the combination from different subdisciplines and theoretical frameworks, could offer us stronger explanations of phonological systems, phonetic processing and the inter-relation between both objects of study. This paper is based on a study of first language attrition in Czechs living in France, which reveals that Czech expatriates in France use prominent rises in non-conclusive intonation patterns in their native language. We manipulated the speech of six expatriates by reducing the fundamental frequency (f 0) range of non-conclusive rises in a phrase, and the speech of six Czech control speakers by expanding the f 0 range to mimic the French-like prominent rises. The manipulations served, alongside filler items, as the basis for a perception test in which 37 native Czech listeners assessed how much the speakers’ pronunciation manifested marks of a long-term stay in France. The results confirmed our hypothesis that expanding the control speakers’ f 0 range would increase the perceived effect of French. However, reducing the f 0 range in the expatriate group did not yield lower French-effect ratings, most likely due to the presence of other pronunciation features in their speech.

This paper aims at analyzing how listeners from João Pessoa perceive the contrast between the alveolar and palatal productions of /S/in syllable coda position, in relation to different segments in the following phonetic-phonological context. Moreover, this work investigated these listeners' perception in relation to the dialect of their speech community and their own pronunciation according to the results of Hora (2011, 2003), Lopes (2012) and Silva, Henrique and Lopes (2015). The most relevant results were: 1. listeners attribute the same degree of difference to the pair of fricatives independently of the following context; 2. they are aware of the fricative's behavior of João Pessoa's dialect; and 3. there is identification between these speakers and the dialect of their speech community regarding the palatalization of coronal fricative. Speech production involves an intricate set of actions. Its underlying cognitive mechanisms are thus historically seen as distant from those of speech perception, usually assumed to be a passive process. However, dynamic perspectives on language congregate grammar and language use, approximate phonetics and phonology, and value the role of speech perception in language development. Recent studies argue that speech production and perception are overlaying or at least highly interacting. Some scholars claim that the link between these two processes surpasses the acoustics, as studies have revealed that action also has a role in language comprehension. Phonic gestures are not just mechanisms by means of which one experiences speech production, but are supporting to perception. In this perspective, models interested in L2 development face a twofold challenge: to amalgamate speech perception and production, and to consider that speech transcends the acoustics, since - in a dynamic frame of reference - phonetic-phonological representations are auditory, gestural and general. This paper aims at presenting evidence for a gesture-driven perspective to L2 speech development in which the gesture is a phonological primitive that pervades and connects speech perception and production. By emphasizing a gesture-driven point of view, this work presents congruent and incongruent tenets among some hegemonic models for L2 speech development and an ecological/dynamic account.

In this paper we purport to qualify the claim, advanced by Appelbaum (1999) that speech perception research, in the last 70 years or so, has endorsed a view on the nature of speech for which no evidence can be adduced and which has resisted falsification through active ad hoc “theoretical repair” carried by speech scientists. We show that the author’s qualms on the putative dogmatic status of speech research are utterly unwarranted, if not misconstrued as a whole. On more general grounds, the present article can be understood as a work on the rather underdeveloped area of the philosophy and history of Linguistics.
