A busca por uma interpretação possível desses processos a partir de uma análise da Geografia e da Geomorfologia permitiu elaborar contribuições fundamentais para a compreensão de fenômenos que revelam a dimensão e o conteúdo das complexidades ambientais da floresta a partir do relevo. A presente pesquisa demonstra que a elevada declividade e presença de condicionantes físicas, climáticas, assim como, aquelas relacionadas à cobertura vegetal e uso do solo, influenciam diretamente na estabilidade do terreno e manutenção das características naturais da planície costeira da Serra do Mar. A contribuição metodológica foi baseada na proposta da Ecodinâmica, a partir da qual foi elaborado o mapa de vulnerabilidade ambiental, com uso da análise integrada sob o ponto de vista dos estudos da paisagem. A combinação dos dados de suscetibilidade a movimentos gravitacionais de massa e inundação aos de riqueza florestal, por meio do processamento em ambiente de Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG), permitiu identificar que os usos históricos realizados por populações tradicionais influenciam de forma positiva a composição dos fragmentos florestais, o que pode gerar subsídios para propostas de planos de adaptação baseados em ecossistemas. The social interventions in relief transform the landscape and modify the dynamics of natural systems by accelerating the actions of time, which can cause damages to human being and consequently affect the biotic elements of an ecosystem. A search for a possible interpretation of these processes of geography and geomorphology analysis allowed to elaborate fundamental contributions to the understanding of phenomena that reveal the dimension and the content of the environmental complexities of the forest from the relief. The present research demonstrates that the high slope and presence of physical and climatic conditions, as well as those related to vegetation cover and land use, they have directly influence in the land stability and maintenance of the natural characteristics of the plain coastal of Serra do Mar. The methodological contribution was based on the proposal of Ecodynamics, from which the environmental vulnerability map was elaborated using the integrated analysis from the point of view of the landscape studies. The combination of susceptibility data to mass gravity movements and flood to the forest richness, through processing in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allowed to identify that the historical uses made by indigenous peoples positively influence the composition of the forest fragments, which can generate subsidies for proposals for ecosystem-based adaptation plans.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se analisar a estrutura do componente arbóreo de dois trechos de Floresta Estacional Perenifólia na Bacia do rio das Pacas, Querência-MT. Foram distribuídos sistematicamente 200 pontos-quadrante em área preservada e 100 pontos em área alterada. Em cada ponto-quadrante foram medidos e identificados os quatro indivíduos mais próximos do ponto, adotando-se como critério de inclusão o diâmetro na altura de 1,30 m do solo ≥ 10 cm. Utilizou-se o estimador Jackknife 1 para estimar a riqueza específica e o índice de Jaccard para a similaridade florística entre os dois trechos. Embora os dois trechos apresentem históricos de alteração e preservação diferentes, com perfis fitossociológicos distintos, a similaridade florística entre eles foi alta (Cj=0,67), a riqueza específica foi similar (57 espécies na floresta preservada e 52 na alterada) e a espécie com maior Valor de Importância (VI) foi a mesma nos dois trechos - Ocotea leucoxylon (Sw.) Laness. Portanto, conclui-se que, apesar das alterações antrópicas sofridas no passado, o trecho de floresta alterado encontra-se em estágio avançado de regeneração para os padrões das florestas estacionais perenifólias, naturalmente menos diversas que as florestas ombrófilas amazônicas. ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the tree component structure of two patches of Evergreen Seasonal Forest in Pacas River Basin in Querência municipality in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The point-centered quarter method was applied to systematically distribute 200 points in pristine forest and 100 points in managed forest. In each quarter, the nearest tree to the sampling point with diameter at breast height equal or greater than 10 cm was included. Estimates of local species richness were obtained with the Jackknife 1 and the Jaccard index was used to determinate floristic similarity between the patches. Although the two forest patches have had distinct historical uses, with tree component structure distinct, the areas presented high floristic similarity (Cj=0.67), the local species richness was alike (57 species in pristine forest and 52 in managed forest) and the species with the highest importance value was the same in the both patches - Ocotea leucoxylon (Sw.) Laness. Despite the anthropogenic disturbances in the past, it is possible to conclude that the managed forest is in an advanced stage of regeneration as expected for the evergreen seasonal forests pattern since this forest is naturally less diverse than the Amazon ombrophilous forests.

RESUMO Os objetivos desse trabalho foram amostrar e caracterizar o componente arbóreo de florestas maduras da região metropolitana de São Paulo, SP, Brasil, verificar a existência de variações florísticas ao longo dos planaltos da região no sentido litoral-interior e quais fatores ambientais que poderiam influenciá‑la. Além disso, são realizadas considerações sobre a classificação e conservação dessas florestas. Foram amostradas três florestas maduras da região metropolitana, situadas nos municípios de São Paulo (Marsilac), Cotia (Reserva Florestal do Morro Grande) e Itapevi. Em cada localidade foram instaladas duas parcelas de 20 × 50 m com amostragem dos indivíduos com perímetro a 1,30 m de altura do solo PAP ≥ 15 cm. Posteriormente, foram realizadas análises de agrupamento (UPGMA) e ordenação (DCA) com dados de densidade das espécies. O levantamento resultou na amostragem de 943 indivíduos arbóreos pertencentes a 50 famílias, 109 gêneros e 184 espécies; índice de Shannon 4,62, equabilidade de Pielou 0,88, área basal de 46,1 m2 ha-1 e densidade de 1.572 ind ha-1. As análises de agrupamento e ordenação indicaram haver maior similaridade entre Marsilac e Morro Grande, com tendência à formação de um bloco florístico mais homogêneo, enquanto que Itapevi se isolou das demais. Essa variação foi atribuída à existência de um período seco mais acentuado no inverno na região de Itapevi, fator que possibilita a presença de algumas espécies comumente associadas a florestas estacionais semidecíduas. Ainda assim, foi verificado que as florestas da região metropolitana são compostas por uma flora predominantemente ombrófila, com maior ou menor presença de elementos de florestas estacionais semidecíduas, mistas ou frias/úmidas. A alta diversidade das florestas maduras, aliada à presença de uma grande quantidade de espécies raras e ameaçadas, além da escassez desses remanescentes, são razões para proteção e conservação imediata dessas florestas. ABSTRACT This survey was carried out in order to characterize the tree component of mature Atlantic Forests from São Paulo metropolitan area, São Paulo State, Brazil, to check if there is a floristic variation along the highlands of the region towards littoral-interior, to verify which environmental factors could have influence on it, and to contribute to the classification and conservation of these forests. In order to perform this study, two plots (20 × 50 m) were installed on three mature forests located in the cities of São Paulo (Marsilac), Cotia (Morro Grande Forest Reserve), and Itapevi, with samples from all arboreal individuals with circumference at breast height CBH ≥ 15 cm. Clusters (UPGMA) and ordinations (DCA) analysis were performed between the plots, using species density data. This survey resulted in a sample of 943 trees belonging to 50 families, 109 genera, 184 species; Shannon index 4.62; Pielou equability 0.88; basal area 46.1 m2 ha-1, and density of 1.572 ind ha-1. The clusters and ordination analysis indicated that there was greater similarity between Marsilac and Morro Grande, with a tendency to form a more homogeneous floristic block, while Itapevi was isolated from the others. This floristic variation was attributed to the drier winter in Itapevi region, allowing the occurrence of some species usually associated with seasonal semideciduous forests. However, it was verified that the forests of São Paulo metropolitan area are composed of a predominantly ombrophilous flora, with variable presence of semideciduous forest species, mixed, or cold-wet forests. The high diversity of the mature forests, the presence of a large number of rare and threatened species, and the scarcity of these forest remnants, require immediate protection and conservation actions.

Leguminosae é dominante nas formações vegetacionais amazônicas; e, nesse contexto, o arquipélago de Marajó possui destaque, pois inclui várias dessas formações. Este trabalho objetiva fornecer uma listagem das espécies de Leguminosae registradas no arquipélago de Marajó e analisar a sua distribuição geográfica. Analisaram‑se dados de herbários, literatura e coletas, e a partir de então foram definidos os padrões de distribuição. Foram registradas 241 espécies em 80 gêneros as quais seis são novos registros para o Estado do Pará. Os gêneros mais representativos foram Inga, Mimosa, Aeschynomene e Machaerium. A subfamília Papilionoideae apresentou maior número de gêneros e espécies. Jacqueshuberia quinquangulata é endêmica da região estudada. A análise da distribuição mostrou o predomínio de espécies amplamente distribuídas pela América do Sul. O arquipélago, por sua heterogeneidade fisionômica, é um sítio diverso de Leguminosae na Amazônia, com cerca de 30% da flora específica da família no Estado do Pará. Leguminosae is dominant in vegetation formations of Amazon and, in this context the Marajó Archipelago stands out for including several of these formations. This paper aimed to update and analyze the patterns of geographic distribution of Leguminosae from the Marajó archipelago. Data obtained from herbaria, literature and botanical expeditions thus the patterns of distribution were determined. We registered 241 species in 80 genera of which six are new records for the flora of Pará State. The most representative genera were Inga, Mimosa, Aeschynomene and Machaerium. Subfamily Papilionoideae had the greatest number of genera and species. Jacqueshuberia quinquangulata is endemic to Marajó Island. The phytogeographical analysis showed predominance of species widely distributed South America. The archipelago, because of its physiognomic heterogeneity, represents a diverse site of Leguminosae in Amazon, with about 31% of species diversity mentioned for the family in Pará.

Os processos morfoclimáticos típicos do meio semi-árido, com suas estações contrastadas e as degradações antrópicas, são responsáveis por um dinamismo da vegetação em que a caatinga raquítica e rala representa um sub-clímax e a caatinga em fase de regeneração são disclimax antrópicos. A caatinga arbórea ou floresta seca seria, neste caso, o verdadeiro clímax mesmo atingido pelas ações antrópicas. A partir desse pressuposto objetivou-se nesse estudo estabelecer uma classificação provisória baseada na pressão antrópica e descrever fitogeograficamente a caatinga da região do Cariri Paraibano, onde apesar das características de pobreza do estrato herbáceo é rica em espécies e em biomassa. Também é importante considerar o processo de ocupação da região, os desmatamentos indiscriminados, associados à fragilidade natural desse ecossistema, que acarretaram sérias conseqüências para os geótopos e para as biocenoses, dentre estas a redução da diversidade biológica da vegetação nativa, produzindo uma diversidade de extratos, apresentada nesse trabalho como comunidade-tipo.Palavras–chaves: Vegetação Nativa; Fitogeografia; Comunidade-Tipo; Semi-Árido. ABSTRACT: The Caatinga biome is an ecosystem are adapted to extremely arid conditions, with a remarkable potential for regeneration, but its mechanisms of self-defense become far more vulnerable to conditions imposed on them. The typical morphoclimatic processes of the semi-arid environment, with its contrasting seasons and anthropogenic degradation, are responsible for the dynamism of vegetation in the Caatinga is a rickety thin sub-climax Caatinga in the process of regeneration is a anthropic disclimax. Tree caatinga or dry forest tree would, in this case, the true climax even reached by human actions. From this assumption objective of this study is to establish a provisional classification based on human disturbance, to describe the phytogeography of the Caatinga of Cariri of the Paraiba State (NW region of Brazil), where despite the poverty characteristics of the herb is rich in species and biomass. It is also important to consider the process of occupation of the region, the indiscriminate deforestation, coupled with the weakness of natural ecosystem, which led to serious consequences for geotope and the aquatic communities, among them the reduction of biological diversity of native vegetation, producing a variety of extracts, presented in this work as a community type.Keywords: Native Vegetation; Fitogeography; Community-Kind; Semi-Arid.

As florestas estacionais ocupam, aproximadamente, 15% da área do Cerrado e estão entre os tipos de vegetação mais degradados e fragmentados, neste bioma. Este estudo teve como objetivo fornecer uma visão geral do estado atual do conhecimento sobre estas florestas e divulgar informações que possam contribuir para a ampliação e o aprofundamento dos estudos já realizados. O trabalho mostra que estudos já esclareceram grande parte das questões levantadas pelos primeiros investigadores, mas que o conhecimento de alguns aspectos ainda permanece incompleto. Foram apontados a redução das intervenções destrutivas do homem, nas áreas remanescentes, e o restabelecimento da conectividade entre os fragmentos e o desenvolvimento de métodos de exploração sustentável como os maiores desafios a serem enfrentados pelos agentes envolvidos no estudo e na gestão destas florestas. Seasonal forests cover about 15% of the Brazilian Savannah and are among the most degraded and fragmented vegetation types in this biome. This study aimed to provide an overview of the current knowledge on these forests and disseminate information that can contribute to the amplification and deepening of previous studies. It shows that previous studies have already explained a large amount of questions raised by earlier researchers, but that the knowledge on some important aspects still remains incomplete. The anthropogenic activities reduction in the remaining areas, as well as the restoration of connectivity between fragments and the development of sustainable exploitation methods, were pointed out as major challenges to be faced by people involved in the study and management of these forests.

A flora da Serra do Cipó tem sido extensamente pesquisada, especialmente a partir do início do projeto "Flora da Serra do Cipó", coordenada pelo Departamento de Botânica da Universidade de São Paulo. Entretanto, até o momento as coletas concentraram-se à oeste da Serra. Os objetivos deste trabalho são discutir os padrões de fitofisionomia e composição da flora arbórea da Serra do Cipó, analisar a contribuição da flora da porção leste ao corpo de conhecimento florístico da Serra do Cipó e discutir a classificação da porção leste com relação aos domínios fitogeográficos da Mata Atlântica e do Cerrado. Foram computadas as espécies levantadas por um estudo anterior na porção leste da Serra, bem como aquelas levantadas pelo projeto "Flora da Serra do Cipó", predominantemente à oeste da Serra. Foram encontradas 530 espécies arbóreas, sendo 88 espécies em comum, 250 espécies exclusivas do oeste e 192 espécies exclusivas do leste. Os resultados mostram a heterogeneidade florística das florestas da Serra do Cipó, que é correlacionada com sua heterogeneidade ambiental, principalmente a litologia e a altitude. A porção leste da Serra do Cipó, incluída no domínio da Mata Atlântica, apresenta transições relativamente abruptas para o campo rupestre, muitas vezes intermeadas por candeais. The flora of the Serra do Cipó has been extensively studied, especially since the start of the "Flora da Serra do Cipó" project, coordinated by the Departamento de Botânica of the Universidade de São Paulo. However, until now collections have been concentrated in the western part of this region. The goals of this work were to discuss the phytophysiognomy and composition patterns of the arboreal flora of the Serra do Cipó, analyze the contribution of the flora of the eastern portion of the Serra do Cipó to the entire flora of this region and to discuss the classification of the eastern portion in regards to the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado phytogeographical domains. The species found by a previous study in the eastern portion of the Serra were analyzed, as well as those surveyed by the project "Flora da Serra do Cipó," which are predominantly from the western part of this region. Five hundred and thirty arboreal species were encountered, 88 common in both regions, 250 exclusive to the western part and 192 exclusive to the eastern part. Results revealed the floristic heterogeneity of forests in the Serra do Cipó, which is correlated to its disparate environment and is mainly related to its lithology and elevation. The eastern portion of the Serra do Cipó, which is part of the Atlantic Forest domain, presents a relatively abrupt transition to campo rupestre, and is often intermingled with candeais.

O Município de Nova Lima, na Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte (MG), encontra-se no contato entre os domínios do Cerrado e da Mata Atlântica, que são dois hotspots de biodiversidade. Uma amostragem florística foi realizada em uma floresta semidecídua (20°00' S e 43°55' W) com o objetivo de avaliar sua relação com outras florestas semidecíduas e ombrófilas presentes em ambos os domínios a avaliar sua afinidade fitogeográfica. A região estudada encontra-se sob alta pressão antrópica devido à expansão urbana. A amostragem florística foi baseada na coleta de todos os indivíduos lenhosos presentes fora e dentro de 44 parcelas retangulares de 20 × 5 metros. A floresta estudada foi comparada com outras presentes no Distrito Federal e dos Estados de Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro e Goiás usando análises multivariadas. Foram encontradas 205 espécies representando 49 famílias botânicas. O registro de espécies com distribuição restritas a Mata Atlântica foi 15 vezes maior que do Cerrado. A flora arbórea da floresta estudada é, em boa medida, um subconjunto da flora das florestas ombrófilas, tendo espécies provavelmente mais eficientes em resistir e competir sob condições de seca mais prolongada. Assim, a floresta semidecídua estudada pode ser considerada como floresta atlântica sensu lato. The Nova Lima city (metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil) is located in an ecotone between Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) and Atlantic Forest, wich are two of the world's biodiversity hotspots. A floristic survey was carried out in a semideciduous forest (20°00' S and 43°55' W) in order to establish its relations with other forests (rain forest and semideciduous) from both hotspots, as well as to assess their phytogeographical insertion. The region is under high pressure due to urban expansion. The floristic survey of the semideciduous forest was based on specimens of woody plants collected both in and outside of 44 plots of 20 × 5 meters. The studied forest was compared with other 72 forests of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Goiás States and the Federal District using multivariate analyses. At semideciduous forest 205 species of 49 botanical families were found. The record of species with restricted distribution to Atlantic Forest was 15 times greater than in the Cerrado. The tree flora of the semideciduous forest studied is a subset of that of rainforests, with species that are more efficient in coping with a longer dry season. Thus, the forest may be considered an Atlantic Forest.

Por meio de estudos recentes, a identidade fitogeográfica do Alto Rio Xingu foi reconhecida como Floresta Estacional Perenifólia por apresentar características físicas e florísticas próprias, embora situada na área de contato entre a floresta ombrófila e o cerrado. Neste sentido, este estudo apresenta a similaridade florística entre florestas estacionais deciduais e semideciduais, Cerrado do Brasil Central e florestas ombrófilas amazônicas, buscando interpretar as relações entre a Floresta Estacional Perenifólia do Alto Xingu com uma ou outra formação. Foram selecionadas 32 listagens de espécies arbustivo-arbóreas de estudos florísticos/fitossociológicos. A similaridade florística foi calculada por meio do índice de Jaccard e da construção de dendrograma baseado na média de grupo. A análise de similaridade permitiu identificar a clara distinção florística entre os biomas Cerrado e Floresta Amazônica, bem como as áreas de tensão ecológica entre estes biomas. As áreas de floresta estacional perenifólia foram mais similares com a floresta estacional semidecidual monodominante, o que pode ser explicado por estarem inseridas em uma região ecotonal entre o Cerrado e a Floresta Amazônica. A baixa similaridade da Floresta Estacional Perenifólia com os demais tipos florestais confirma a flora própria desta fitofisionomia, o que evidencia o seu reconhecimento em uma região considerada como área de transição. Recent studies have showed that the phytogeographic identity of the Upper Xingu River is as Seasonal Evergreen Forest. The region has peculiar physical and floristic characteristics, located at the contact area between the rain forest and the Brazilian Savannah (Cerrado). This study shows the floristic similarity between deciduous and semideciduous seasonal forests, cerrado of Middle Brazil and Amazonian tropical rain forests, aiming to interpret the relationship of the Seasonal Evergreen Forest of the Upper Xingu with one of these formations. Thirty-two lists of arbustive-arboreal species were taken from floristic and phytosociologic studies. The floristic similarity was estimated by Jaccard's index and the construction of dendrogram based on group mean values. The analysis of similarity allowed the identification of the clear floristic distinction between the Cerrado and the Amazon Forest biomes, as well as the areas of ecological tension between these biomes. The areas of seasonal evergreen forest were more similar to the monodominant semideciduous seasonal forest, which may be a consequence of their location in the ecotone between the Cerrado and the Amazon Forest. The low similarity between the Seasonal Evergreen Forest and the other forest types confirme the unique flora possessed by this phytophysiognomy, that demonstrates its recognition in a region considered as the transition area.

A análise das relações de similaridade florística entre comunidades geralmente conduz ao estabelecimento de padrões, condicionados por fatores diversos que determinam a ocorrência ou não das espécies em diferentes locais. Em busca de tais padrões, foram analisadas as relações de similaridade florística entre comunidades florestais localizadas na região do Planalto de Ibiúna, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Incluíram-se na análise 21 fragmentos florestais e seis sítios em uma Reserva Florestal contínua, sendo que a composição florística e a estrutura da comunidade arbórea (DAP mínimo 5 cm) em cada local foram amostradas pelo método de quadrantes. Aplicaram-se dois métodos de análises multivariadas: 1) Análise de Correspondência Destendenciada (DCA), com base no índice de similaridade de Sørensen; e 2) Divisão Hierárquica Dicotômica (TWINSPAN). A similaridade florística foi mais elevada entre comunidades em estádios sucessionais semelhantes, especialmente se estivessem geograficamente próximas. Há um gradiente florístico associado à latitude, indicando tratar-se de uma região de transição entre biomas. Nos sítios situados na face norte da região de estudo estão presentes espécies que também ocorrem no cerradão e em floresta estacional semidecidual, enquanto nos sítios situados na face sul prevalecem espécies características da floresta ombrófila densa. Analysis of floristic similarity relationships between plant communities can detect patterns of species occurrence and also explain conditioning factors. Searching for such patterns, floristic similarity relationships among Atlantic Forest sites situated at Ibiúna Plateau, São Paulo state, Brazil, were analyzed by multivariate techniques. Twenty one forest fragments and six sites within a continuous Forest Reserve were included in the analyses. Floristic composition and structure of the tree community (minimum dbh 5 cm) were assessed using the point centered quarter method. Two methods were used for multivariate analysis: Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). Similarity relationships among the study areas were based on the successional stage of the community and also on spatial proximity. The more similar the successional stage of the communities, the higher the floristic similarity between them, especially if the communities are geographically close. A floristic gradient from north to south was observed, suggesting a transition between biomes, since northern indicator species are mostly heliophytes, occurring also in cerrado vegetation and seasonal semideciduous forest, while southern indicator species are mostly typical ombrophilous and climax species from typical dense evergreen Atlantic Forest.

Para justificar essa inclusão são apresentadas as características ambientais (clima, solo, hidrologia) e diferenças fisionômicas e florísticas entre as florestas do Alto Xingu e demais florestas ombrófilas da Bacia do Amazonas e estacionais do Planalto Central. This paper proposes the inclusion of the Evergreen Seasonal Forest category in the official system used to classify Brazilian forests. This proposal is based upon the floristic and physiognomic particularities of the Southern Amazonian forest, which reach a greater magnitude around the Upper Xingu River. In order to justify the inclusion, the paper reports environmental characteristics (climate, soil and hydrology) as well as floristic and physiognomic differences between the Upper Xingu River forest and both the Ombrophilous Forest from the Amazon Basin and the Seasonal Forest of the Central Plateau. A composição específica de florestas estacionais no Rio Grande do Sul é fortemente influenciada por dois contingentes florísticos diferentes, um coincidente com as florestas atlânticas do leste e outro com as florestas paranaense-uruguaias do oeste. Um levantamento fitossociológico de uma floresta central sul-rio-grandense foi realizado para detectar a estrutura comunitária do componente arbóreo e a participação local dos diferentes contingentes florísticos. Todas as árvores com DAP > ou = 5 cm foram registradas em uma área de 1 ha, subdividida em 100 unidades amostrais de 10 x 10 m. As espécies amostradas foram classificadas como amplas ou restritas, segundo suas distribuições geográficas, considerando as afinidades florísticas leste ou oeste. A densidade total por hectare foi de 1855 indivíduos, pertencentes a 23 famílias, 46 gêneros e 55 espécies. As famílias com maior riqueza específica foram Fabaceae e Myrtaceae. As espécies mais importantes foram Gymnanthes concolor Spreng., Euterpe edulis Mart., Sorocea bonplandii (Baill.) Burger, Lanj. & Boer, Pachystroma longifolium (Nees) I.M. Johnst. e Trichilia claussenii C.DC., acumulando 55,2% do total do valor de importância. A diversidade específica (H') foi estimada em 2,244 (nats). As espécies do oeste formam um contingente mais diversificado, geralmente ocorrendo como árvores do dossel ou emergentes. As espécies do leste constituem um contingente bem menos diversificado, porém com uma alta participação quantitativa como árvores de porte médio do sub-bosque. Aspectos gerais da composição e da estrutura sugerem a importância de árvores do dossel de florestas estacionais interiores como formadoras de ambientes favoráveis para diversas árvores do sub-bosque de florestas pluviais costeiras. Species composition of seasonal forests in Rio Grande do Sul is strongly influenced by two different floristic contingents, one coinciding with the eastern Atlantic forests and other with the western Paranean-Uruguayan forests. A phytosociological survey of a central South-Riograndean forest was carried out to describe the community structure of the tree component and the local participation of different floristic contingents. All trees with DBH > or = 5 cm were recorded in an area of 1 ha, subdivided into 100 square plots of 10 x 10 m. The sampled species were classified according to their geographic distribution into widespread and restricted to eastern or western floristic affinities. The total density per hectare were 1855 individuals, distributed into 23 families, 46 genera and 55 species. The families with highest species richness were Fabaceae and Myrtaceae. The most important species were Gymnanthes concolor Spreng., Euterpe edulis Mart., Sorocea bonplandii (Baill.) Burger, Lanj. & Boer, Pachystroma longifolium (Nees) I.M. Johnst. and Trichilia claussenii C.DC., performing 55.2% of the total of importance values. Species diversity (H') was estimated as 2.244 (nats). The western species form a more diversified contingent, generally occuring as canopy or emergent trees. The eastern species constitute a much less diversified contingent, however with a high quantitative participation as medium-tall trees of the forest understorey. General composition and structural features suggest the importance of canopy trees of interior seasonal forests as providing a suitable habitat for several understorey trees from coastal rain forests.
