Objective: To describe the development of the nursing process in the psychic and emotional dimensions of patients in a general hospital. Methods: Exploratory and qualitative research with the participation of nine nurses from a hospital in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, in 2018. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and submitted to Content Analysis. The phases of the Nursing Process described in Resolution 358/2009 of the Federal Nursing Council were used as an analytical matrix. Results: The participants described the observation, perception, active search in medical records, communication as strategies for collecting nursing data; demonstrated difficulties in using nursing diagnoses, planning and implementing specific care in the psychosocial dimension. Collaborative care with the multiprofessional team was emphasized. They stated that some nursing evaluations were impaired due to the reduced time spent by patients in the services. Conclusion: The development of the nursing process with a focus on the psychological and emotional dimensions in a general hospital is a challenge for nursing. Health institutions should invest in permanent education to train the nursing staff for quality care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
