Chemical Equilibrium misconceptions impaired the learning of many biochemicalundergraduate content. It was widely reinforced by chemical education data. On the otherhand there was no data for the consequences in biochemistry learning. OBJECTIVE Weproposed the construction of an Aminoacid Paper Electrophoresis software as a tool forChemical Equilibrium teaching and learning which aims to integrate the representationallevels, being macroscopic, microscopic and symbolic in a way to evidence to student thedynamic character of the equilibrium phenomena. It attenuates misconceptions andreduces impairments on biochemistry learning. Although the simulator is based onclassical biochemistry topic it is designed to deal with chemical equilibrium concepts in thecontext of biochemistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The software is an PaperElectrophoresis Simulator programmed in HTML5 language. It guides the student stepstoward the simulation showing the technique fundamentals and variables allowing tochoose aminoacids in a list, as well as build even tetrapeptides and run even four samplesin a single simulation after what is defined a pH for simulation. The simulation results areshown in a depiction of a paper electrophoresis device (macroscopic) the speciesproportion in the medium based on the Handerson-Hasselbalch formula (symbolic) and thespecies charge change based on the medium pH (microscopic). All activities are guided bya task list based on previous diagnostic on chemical equilibrium misconceptions.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Results were based on observation of students classdiscussion and survey. Many of previously diagnosed misconceptions were attenuated intests of chemical equilibrium falling from a 72% to 35% error average; and a studentssurvey agreed with simulator objectives (90%), ease of use (94%), chemicalrepresentations straightness (82%), simulation results (71%) integration ofrepresentational levels (87%). CONCLUSIONS: Students declared the software usabilityand reduced its misconceptions on chemical equilibrium.

In this paper, we describe the various ways of giving feedback to learners, in this case Chinese, after completing a written task, as well as the process we have adopted to make the correction process more efficient and effective. Thus, in the theoretical part of this study, we address the feedback given by peers (classmates), and feedback that involves the teacher, not only written (direct and indirect), but also teacher-student conferencing. In the practical part of this paper, we analyze how the adopted method of correction and rewriting makes the process more reflective and thoughtful, not only improving the written tasks, but also leading students to retain the aspects understood and corrected, even if this retention is not absolute in the majority of the cases. The development of dynamic data-based Decision Support Systems (DSSs) along with the increasing availability of data in the industry, makes real-time data acquisition and management a challenge. Intelligent automation appears as a holistic combination of automation with analytics and decisions made by artificial intelligence, delivering smart manufacturing and mass customization while improving resource efficiency. However, challenges towards the development of intelligent automation architectures include the lack of interoperability between systems, complex data preparation steps, and the inability to deal with both high-frequency and high-volume data in a timely fashion. This paper contributes to industrial frameworks focused on the development of standardized system architectures for Industry 4.0, closing the gap between generic architectures and physical realizations. It proposes a platform for intelligent automation relying on a gateway or middleware between field devices, enterprise databases, and DSSs in real-time scenarios. This is achieved by providing the middleware interoperability, determinism, and automatic data structuring over an industrial communication infrastructure such as the OPC UA Standard over Time Sensitive Networks (TSN). Cloud services and database warehousing used to address some of the challenges are handled using fog computing and a multi-workload database. This paper presents an implementation of the platform in the pharmaceutical industry, providing interoperability and real-time reaction capability to changes to an industrial prototype using dynamic scheduling algorithms.

This paper presents a method to evaluate usability and gameplay efficiency for educational games developed for children undergoing cancer treatment, as well as a case study involving the game “Corrida Gramatical”. The methodology of this paper consists of the use of tablets by patients aged 10 to 15 years old to evaluate and quantify the usability and gameplay of the game, while the process is documented through non-participant observation, a System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The proposed method has proved to be supportive in the evaluation of existing educational games, considering the participants of the research, as well as in the improvement of the game by analyzing the flaws identified in the game design. For future studies, we intend to change the inclusion criteria to select a larger group of patients and reaffirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Este artigo faz parte da produção no âmbito do Pós-DOC acolhido pela UID 4372/FCT- Laboratório de Educação a Distância e eLearning, unidade financiada pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal. O objetivo do presente artigo é o de oferecer contribuições para formulação de frameworks como ferramentas de suporte ao desenvolvimento de MOOCs mais eficientes e com melhor qualidade. Dois estudos de caso foram realizados com MOOCs financiados pela Comissão Europeia, cujo principal objetivo é o de introduzir educadores presenciais junto a algumas experiências pedagógicas positivas em ambiente virtual, e que podem ser aplicadas ao ensino presencial. Os resultados levaram à observação de que, embora o MOOC em análise tenha demonstrado conformidade com relação à maioria dos principais fundamentos pedagógicos, vários outros importantes aspectos pedagógicos secundários, designs instrucionais, assim como a usabilidade da plataforma educacional, não receberam a atenção necessária. Os resultados do presente estudo conduziram à conclusão de que frameworks, concebidos como ferramentas de suporte ao desenvolvimento de MOOCs, devem incluir não apenas teorias, conceitos e princípios pedagógicos fundamentais e gerais (como a maioria deles atualmente o fazem), mas também integrar a estes - e de forma articulada - os imprescindíveis aspectos secundários práticos, como, por exemplo, o design instrucional e o projeto do sistema de aprendizagem centrada no usuário This paper aims to offer some contributions to the development of frameworks as tools to support the development of better quality and more efective MOOCs. Two empirical studies have been carried out addressing a MOOC funded by the European Commission, whose main objective is to introduce face to face teachers to some positive pedagogical experiences in virtual environment which could be applied to their presential teaching. The results led to the observation that although the MOOC under analysis demonstrated compliance to most of high level and theoretical pedagogical MOOCs principles, some important low level pedagogical aspects, instructional designs, as well as the usability of the educational platform, have not been received the attention as required. In conclusion, this paper supports the view that frameworks conceived as a tool to support MOOC design to meet quality and efective learning experience, should include not only high level theories and pedagogical principles (as most of they currently do), but also to integrate these- and in an articulated way-with the essential practical secondary aspects, such as the instructional design and the user-cente-red learning system design. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This paper describes the design, development, and implementation of two separate classroom experiments using mobile augmented reality (AR) for teaching abstract topics to undergraduate architecture and construction students in two U.S. universities. The presented work is motivated by the fact that the new generation of students (millennials) have a natural ability to use technology and digital information, and show a great affinity for integrating new tools and mobile devices in their daily activities. In contrast, many existing instructional delivery methods are still teacher-centered and based on lectures and memorization to pass knowledge and information onto the students. The first project described in this paper is a construction AR magic book in which an ordinary course textbook was enhanced by overlaying multimedia contents such as images, videos, 3D models, and other visuals on top of the printed figures and diagrams of the book. The second project in this paper, describes the development of an immersive AR application called Skope, which is designed to enhance students’ site visit experience. This application, superimposes the BIM model of an existing building on the real-world building, allowing students to interact with different parameters of the model such as orientation, sitting, direction of prevailing winds, construction processes, structural systems, connection details, and the heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Overall, the assessment of student performance metrics and opinions collected in each project indicates that using AR technology in classroom has a good potential to improve student learning and engagement in the subject matter, and help them better relate abstract topics to real-world problems. Este artigo descreve a concepção, desenvolvimento e implementação de duas experiências de ensino distintas utilizando a realidade aumentada móvel (RA) para ensinar tópicos abstratos a estudantes de graduação de arquitetura e construção em duas universidades americanas. O trabalho apresentado é motivado pelo fato de que a nova geração de alunos (geração milênio) tem uma habilidade natural de usar tecnologia e informação digital e mostra uma grande afinidade para a integração de novas ferramentas e dispositivos móveis em suas atividades diárias. Em contraste, muitos métodos de entrega instrucionais existentes ainda são centrados no professor e baseados em palestras e memorização para passar conhecimento e informação para os alunos. O primeiro projeto descrito neste artigo é um livro mágico com RA, sobre a construção, sobrepondo conteúdos multimídia, como imagens, vídeos, modelos 3D e outros visuais sobre as figuras impressas e diagramas do livro texto tradicional de uma disciplina. O segundo projeto neste artigo, descreve o desenvolvimento de um aplicativo de imersão com RA chamado Skope, que é projetado para melhorar a experiência de visita a campo dos alunos. Esta aplicação, sobrepõe o modelo BIM de um edifício existente na visualização do edifício do mundo real, permitindo que os alunos interajam com diferentes parâmetros do modelo tais como, como orientação, entorno, direção de ventos predominantes, processos de construção, sistemas estruturais, detalhes de conexão, e sistemas de aquecimento, resfriamento e ventilação. Em geral, a avaliação das métricas de desempenho dos alunos e das opiniões coletadas em cada projeto indica que o uso da tecnologia de RA na sala de aula tem um bom potencial para melhorar a aprendizagem e engajamento dos alunos no assunto e ajudá-los a relacionar melhor tópicos abstratos com problemas do mundo real.

This paper addresses the problem of programming, control and availability of distributed robots teams. Systems based on robots working together collaboratively has been the subject of much research in recent years. Because the rapid spread of technologies in mobile devices and Internet, as well as the benefits that robotics adds to the various everyday applications, the trend is that more and more it is present in various activities of human beings. For distributed robots systems there is a latent need for research to enable the use of such systems by end users with no or almost no experience with programming or robotics. Thus, this paper proposes a system architecture that allows the creation and programming of robots teams, allowing and users to manage them as a single system and simple way using collective knowledge acquired both programmers as of the and users. The tests are performed by an application that was developed under the concepts of this architecture. It provides a set of special operations by which and users can connect, create and control robots teams at high level. The experiments use LEGO Mindstorms® robots as members of two robot teams. The process of creation, programming and control of the teams is presented in well defined steps. The results are satisfactory and show that the operating strategy of the proposed system meets fundamental aspects at the system level such as modularity, flexibility and ease of access for end users.

Neste artigo, aborda-se o emprego de Veículos Aéreos Não Tripulados (VANTs), ou drones, para a ação humanitária. Através da análise do emprego e funções adquiridas por estas tecnologias no âmbito global, tenciona-se discutir e escrutinar criticamente as narrativas, cada vez mais frequentes, que associam drones como veículos para a ação humanitária e, desse modo, pretende-se contribuir e oferecer alguns insumos para este nascente e importante debate., The paper addresses the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or drones, for humanitarian action. By analyzing the deployment and functions acquired by such technologies at the global level, the paper critically discusses and scrutinizes the increasingly frequent narratives linking drones as vehicles for humanitarian action and thus seeks to contribute and offer some inputs to this nascent and important debate.

Textbooks are widely used as a teaching tool, and are considered very important in severaleducational environments, from elementary to tertiary education levels. Since the firsttextbook arose in the seventeenth century, printed books are the most popular format oftextbooks published. New technologies developed over years such as paper, ink andprinting hardware. These have made it possible to present printed books in even moreattractive formats. Moreover, digital technologies allowed textbooks to providecomplementary content, such as software, audio and video. Aiming to understand hownew technologies has impacted both textbook presentation and content, we run anexternal representations (ER) content analysis in a textbook chapter and on aneducational software (eBook), both about muscle contraction. The three editions ofBioquimica Basica textbook (1990, 1999 and 2007), written by Anita Marzzoco andBayardo B. Torres and the four versions of Contracao Muscular software developed byEduardo Galembeck et al. were analyzed. The obtained results showed that the textbookhad changes in relation to typography (paper size, kind of paper and colors of printing),and to ERs presented (use of electronic micrograph and 3D models in the 3rd edition andthe exclusion of some images and graphs previously used). Regarding the ContracaoMuscular software, there were several changes in relation to the visual aspect, such asimages and icons, and also code updates to make the software compatible with newtechnologies developed since the first version was released. Although technology hasdriven some updates in both cases, this happened in different aspects includingpossibilities to create a modern layout and cheaper printer services, in the case of thetextbook, and graphic design and software usability, in the case of the eBook. Thuschanging the way information is presented to the users.

Neste trabalho apresenta-se uma descrição e análise resumida bem como a aplicação dos vários métodos deidentificação de zonas de acumulação de acidentes propostos pelo manual Highway Safety Manual (HSM). É reconhecidointernacionalmente a importância deste manual e a sua utilização pelos profissionais responsáveis da segurança viária. OHSM propõe e descreve 13 métodos para identificação de zonas de acumulação de acidentes, todos muito distintos querem termos de âmbito de aplicação quer na complexidade dos mesmos. Com o objetivo de simplificar a escolha e aplicaçãodestes métodos, o presente estudo descreve e organiza os diferentes métodos segundo 3 critérios que podem serdecisivos na escolha e aplicação dos métodos. Para além dos 13 métodos do HSM, apresenta-se ainda um métododesenvolvido recentemente e designado de modelo binário probit. Para analisar os referidos métodos, considerou-se comocaso de estudo a cidade do Porto, Portugal. Considerando este caso de estudo, foi possível analisar as dificuldades eespecificidades de cada método, tendo-se verificado que nem todos os métodos foram possíveis de se aplicar. Osresultados da aplicação dos métodos foram analisados e comparados com base em testes de avaliação de desempenho.Os testes indicam que os métodos excesso previsto da frequência média de acidentes proposto pelo referido manual e omodelo binário probit, mais recentemente desenvolvido, apresentam os melhores resultados. Os resultados desta aplicaçãopoderão servir de base para futuras aplicações noutras regiões e/ou países. This paper presents a description of the various methods proposed by the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) toidentify hotspots. In fact, this manual has become a tool for the professional in road safety all over the world. The HSM suggest and described 13 distinct methods in terms of application context and method complexity. Therefore, the main goal ofthis paper is to describe and organize those methods to help safety professionals to select the method(s) to apply to thestudy case. Thus, the various methods are organized based on 3 application criteria, which may be crucial to the decisionprocess. In addition to the HSM methods, a recent method entitled probit binary model is also shown. An application to thePorto city is presented in order to better analyze each method. In fact, based on this study case, it was concluded that notall of the methods were possible to apply to this study case. A comparison of the various methods is developed using teststo assess the performance of each method. The methods named excess predicted average crash frequency proposed bythe manual and the binary probit model, recently developed, present the best results based on those tests. The results ofthe case study application may be the basis for future applications in other regions and/or countries.

Este trabalho descreve uma aplicação da lógica fuzzy de controle e do CBR (Raciocínio Baseado em Casos) na indústria de processo contínuo. Essas técnicas são discutidas dentro do campo de conhecimentos da Inteligência Artificial, associadas ao processo de tomada de decisões empresariais. A Inteligência Artificial é apontada como um campo de conhecimentos que pode apoiar a tomada de decisões de um modo mais simples e mais preciso do que outros métodos, tais como a modelagem e a gestão por indicadores. As etapas para a construção de um sistema especialista, construído principalmente a partir de experiências empíricas humanas, também são discutidas. O trabalho se encerra apresentando uma rotina de tomada de decisão em um processo termoquímico na indústria cimenteira conduzida por um sistema especialista baseado em CBR e lógica fuzzy, e uma discussão sobre resultados comparados com operadores humanos nas mesmas condições. This paper describes an application of the fuzzy logic control and CBR in the continuous process industry. The techniques are discussed inside the larger branch of knowledge called Artificial Intelligence (AI), which can be related with the decision-making process in companies. Artificial Intelligence is pinpointed as a science that can support decisions in an easier and more precisely way than others methods as models and process indicators management. The steps for the erection of an Expert System, built mainly from human empirical experiences, are also discussed. The paper comes to an end by presenting a decision-making routine in a thermochemical process, in the cement industry, as performed by an Expert System decision-maker, based in CBR and fuzzy logic, and leading to a discussion about results and performance gains, in comparison with human-guided action in the same process.

Neste artigo apresenta-se uma proposta de mediação digital para a participação pública direta em períodos eleitorais. A proposta assenta numa aplicação Web, designada iLeger, baseada nos princípios dos Media Sociais. Pretende-se, com esta proposta, contribuir para reduzir o fosso existente na comunicação entre a comunidade e os candidatos, tornar as campanhas mais abertas e estimular os cidadãos a envolverem-se e a participarem ativamente nos debates eleitorais. Apresentam-se as principais áreas funcionais do iLeger, assim como os resultados de um caso de estudo sobre as Eleições Legislativas Portuguesas de 2011. This paper presents a proposal for digital mediation for direct public participation during electoral periods. With this proposal, a Web application based on social media principles, it is intended to narrow the communication gap between voters and candidates, make campaigns more open and encourage citizens to become involved and participate in electoral debates. This paper also presents the main features of the proposed Web application and includes results from a case study about the Portuguese Parliamentary Elections held in 2011.

Notions of evidentiality and mirativity are related; however there are aspects of each of them which indicate that mirativity is a distinct conceptual category. One issue is how languages encode these categories. The semantic domain of evidentiality refers to the source of knowledge behind assertions. In Brazilian Portuguese, for example, there is no specific category for evidentiality or mirativity, but there is a syntactic construction in one dialect of Brazilian Portuguese that exhibits mirative overtones. The main goal of this paper is to describe that construction, based on a functional semantic approach. RESUMO: Tomando comoobjetode reflexãooprocesso de escritura em ato de duas alunas de 7 anos de idade que elaboram juntas um mesmo texto (manuscrito escolar), iremos discutir, com o apoio metodológico do programa ELAN, a dimensão multimodal que pode interferir na criação de uma história inventada. Nossa reflexão filia-se a uma concepção de sujeito inscrito no funcionamento linguístico-discursivo e nas relações de alteridade instanciadas pelo dispositivo trinitário próprio da língua, que garantiria ao falante, simultaneamente, unidade e incompletude. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: processo de escritura em ato, manuscritos escolares, alteridade, histórias em quadrinhos, onomatopeia. ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to discuss the active writing process of two seven- year-old students who together wrote the same school paper. using ELANas a methological support, we argue that the multimodal dimension can interfere in the creation of an invented story. Our thinking depends on conception of a subject inscribed in the operation of a subject-language discourse and on its relations of alterity shown by the device’s own trinitarian language, which will ensure the speaker both unity and incompleteness. É apresentado um Ambiente Virtual de Aprendizagem (AVA), chamado Hospital Educacional, que aplica recursos de Inteligência Artificial e ludicidade para apoiar o professor e estimular os alunos na construção e difusão do conhecimento, de maneira colaborativa, através de Objetos de Aprendizagem Reutilizáveis. O Hospital Educacional, além de ser um AVA, é um repositório de Objetos de Aprendizagem criados pelos alunos, onde estes objetos são compartilhados livremente para escrever textos (artigos) e para preparação de aulas pelos usuários do ambiente., This paper describes a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), called Hospital Educacional, which applies Artificial Intelligence and ludicity techniques in order to support the professor and motivate the students in order to build and disseminate knowledge in a collaborative way using Reusable Learning Objects. Besides being a VLE, the Hospital Educacional is also a Learning Objects repository created by the students, where these objects are freely shared among the users in order to write papers and prepare classes.

This paper analyses the icon of the documental cinema Les maitres fous, by Jean Rouch, from the theoretical questioning discussed by Foucault in What is an author, having as reference the typology of analysis of documentaries proposed by Bill Nichols. We aim at understanding the film primarily as a discourse on the world and not as a film of Jean Rouch. This forces the scholar to take some epistemological deviation, which consists in not performing the analysis based on its evident information, the "description" of a ritual, but by the search of the fundamental concepts of the filmic narrative, dialectical unity of form and content. The paper proposes an analysis in which the film emerges as the least one of a conservative tradition, whose repercussions were decisive for the essential filmic and epistemological rupture towards the rich and meaningful unfoldings the works of Rouch unveiled afterwards.

In the field of Scholarly Edition, in dialogue with other knowledge, the editor of scholarly editions who is also an editor, acting as an editorial mediator and interpreter, has been involved in the editing and textual criticism of texts that compose our written cultural heritage, using the practices of textual, genetic and sociological criticism to present a variety of editorial products in paper, computer and/or online media. Our goal is, through the editorial activity, to represent a local or regional literature, made of the names that constitute the body of the literate and playwrights in Bahia and, consequently, to contribute with their records in the fields of Literature and Dramaturgy in Brazil. In this direction, the editor of scholarly editions who is also an editor fulfills his role as mediator and critic in the exercise of textual criticism and its methodologies in contemporaneity, making known the processes of production and transmission of texts, providing information about the history of the text and its reception over the time. No campo da Filologia em diálogo com outros saberes, o filólogo-editor, como mediador editorial e intérprete, tem se ocupado da edição e crítica filológica de textos que integram nosso patrimônio cultural escrito, valendo-se das práticas da crítica textual, genética e sociológica, apresentando produtos editoriais variados em suporte papel, informático e/ou em rede. Nosso objetivo é, através da atividade editorial, fazer representar uma literatura local, regional, constituída dos nomes que formam o corpo de literatos e dramaturgos na Bahia e, consequentemente, contribuir com seus registros nos campos da Literatura e Dramaturgia no Brasil. Nessa direção, o filólogo-editor cumpre seu papel de mediador e crítico no exercício da crítica textual e de suas metodologias na contemporaneidade, dando a conhecer os processos de produção e transmissão dos textos, proporcionando informações sobre a história do texto e de sua recepção ao longo do tempo.

O manejo de áreas florestais com base em princípios de ecologia da paisagem é uma tendência do setor florestal, que tem como proposta o gerenciamento integrado dos aspectos econômicos, sociais e ambientais da atividade produtiva, envolvendo decisões complexas que podem ser auxiliadas pelas técnicas de geoprocessamento. No presente trabalho objetivou-se o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia para aplicação dos conceitos de ecologia de paisagem no planejamento do uso da terra em áreas de reflorestamento, por meio da utilização de um sistema de informações geográficas. Para tal, utilizou-se como área de estudo uma fazenda de reflorestamento da International Paper do Brasil, tendo sido estabelecidos cinco critérios para determinação de áreas para recomposição: fertilidade dos solos, mata nativa existente, corpos d'água, declividade e suscetibilidade à erosão. Esses fatores foram analisados, empregando-se os recursos de decisão multicritérios, em ambiente SIG. Como resultado foi obtido um mapa com áreas adequadas à recomposição florestal, segundo os critérios adotados. Com este mapa realizou-se uma simulação, alocando uma nova área de floresta nativa, e o resultado foi avaliado em nível de paisagem por meio de índices apropriados. Forestland management based on landscape ecology principles is a tendency in the forest sector, whose proposal is the integrated management of economic, social, and environmental factors, taking into account complex decisions supported by geospatial technologies. The objective of this study was to develop a methodology to apply the concepts of landscape ecology in land use planning of forest farms, using Geographic Information System techniques. The study area was a forest farm owned by the International Paper do Brasil. Five criteria were used to identify suitable areas for forest recovery: soil fertility, existing native forest patches, water bodies, slope, and erosion susceptibility. These factors were analyzed through the multi-criteria decision resources in a GIS environment. The result was a map showing suitable areas for forest recovery, according to the defined criteria. Based on this map, a simulation was made to allocate a new forest area and the results were evaluated at a landscape level using proper indices.

GIS MODEL FOR WASTE DISPOSAL SITES. Landfill is still the major method for waste disposal in the EU. The need to guarantee environmental protection and to follow a scientific and more transparent procedure of landfill site selection was the motivation to develop the GIS model presented in this paper. This work was developed under the auspices of an Interreg-funded EU project, by a team of Irish and Portuguese partners from University College Cork and the New University of Lisbon, and from local authorities in both countries, Cork County Council and Sesimbra Town Council.The theoretical GIS model consists of two steps. In the first step, data in vector structure and geo-processing techniques such as overlay and buffering are used to exclude areas unsuitable for landfill due to risk to the environment or human health. The exclusion factors considered in this step were grouped into “non-geological factors” and “geological and correlated factors”.The remaining residual areas, considered suitable for the location of landfills, may have some land parcels more suitable than others, and are thus further examined in the second step of the GIS model. This step is an automated raster-based process in which a series of parameters are used to classify each area in terms of high, moderate or low suitability for landfill. These parameters were also grouped into four different types: a) susceptibility to natural hazards; b) aquifer protection levels; c) land use; d) geo-environmental engineering. These parameters can also be weighted in order to provide different evaluation scenarios of the residual areas; extensions have been developed for ArcView GIS that will automatically calculate the weights for each category following inputs from the user. Study sites in both countries were used to test and validate the model. This paper presents the results obtained from the application of the model to Sesimbra Council in Portugal. The development of the landfill GIS model fulfils legislative and environmental obligations associated with site selection in a non-biased way, and the methodology aims at providing a clear and scientific rationale behind the choice of a site. Application of the model does not intend to substitute political decision but will provide decision makers (local authorities, waste management entities, etc.) with an important tool and a methodology that will aid their decision and enable them to conduct their own GIS landfill site selection screening process., Finisterra, vol. 38 n.º 75 (2003)

Os programas foram desenvolvidos com o propósito de analisar os circuitos retificadores não-controlados (a diodos) e controlados (a tiristores), monofásicos e trifásicos, idealizados e em regime permanente, permitindo a simulação visual e interativa dos mesmos. Além disso, este artigo aborda o desenvolvimento e a utilização de Java applets para resolução de algumas equações de projetos orientados para aplicações destes retificadores. O principal objetivo destas Java applets propostas foi o de proporcionar maiores facilidades para os estudantes aumentarem e melhorarem o ritmo de aprendizado no curso de Eletrônica de Potência, enfatizando-se as análises das formas de onda e proporcionando condições para uma efetiva análise comparativa imediata (on-line) entre diferentes experiências desenvolvidas em laboratório, através da conexão TCP/IP padrão da Internet. This paper introduces Java applet programs for a WWW (world wide web)-HTML (hypertext markup language)-based multimedia course in Power Electronics. The applet programs were developed with the purpose of providing an interactive visual simulation and analysis of idealized uncontrolled and controlled single-phase, and three-phase rectifiers. In addition, this paper discusses the development and utilization of Java applet programs to solve some design-oriented equations for rectifier applications. The major goal of these proposed Java applets was to provide more facilities for the students increase their pace in Power Electronics course, emphasizing waveforms analysis, and providing conditions for an on-line comparative analysis among different hands-on laboratory experiences, via a normal Internet TCP/IP connection. Therefore, using the proposed Java applets, which were embedded in a WWW-HTML-based course in Power Electronics, was observed an important improvement of the apprenticeship for the content of this course. The purpose of this paper is to explore machine learning techniques to forecast the oil price. In the era of big data, we investigate whether new automated tools can improve over traditional approaches in terms of forecast accuracy. Oil price point and density forecasts are built from 23 methods, including regression trees (random forest, quantile regression forest, xgboost), regularization procedures (elastic net, lasso, ridge), standard econometric models and forecast combinations, besides the structural factor model of Schwartz and Smith (2000). The database contains 315 macroeconomic and financial variables, used to build high-dimensional models. To evaluate the predictive power of each method, an extensive pseudo out-of-sample forecasting exercise is built, in monthly and quarterly frequencies, with horizons from one month up to five years. Overall, the results indicate a good performance of the machine learning methods in the short-run. Up to six months, lasso-based models, oil future prices, VECM and the Schwartz–Smith model provide the best forecasts. At longer horizons, forecast combinations also become relevant. In several cases, the accuracy gains in respect to the random walk forecast are statistically significant and reach two-digit figures, in percentage terms, using the R 2 out-of-sample statistic; an expressive achievement compared to the previous literature.

Este artigo investiga, a partir da psicanálise, o nacionalismo basco e a atuação do ETA, grupo separatista surgido em 1959 que, nas duas últimas décadas, distinguiu-se por seus atos terroristas. Busca-se aqui decifrar, através dos avatares do próprio discurso nacionalista no País Basco, um "modo de produção" do ódio e de seus efeitos. This paper examines Basque nationalism and ETA activities from the point of view of psychoanalysis. ETA is a separatist group formed in 1959 that has become known for its terrorist acts over the last two decades. Taking the avatars of the nationalist discourse developed in the Basque Country, the paper attempts to decipher a "mode of production" of hate and its effects.

Application programming interfaces (APIs) are everyday tools for any programmer. During its usage, an API mediates the communication process between designers and users. This mediation may be implemented in three different ways: the source code, the documentation, and the API behavior. According to the resources used, an API may reach higher or lower levels of conversation with its users. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework for the definition and classification of conversational APIs. A conversational API is one capable of communicating its internal logic of operation and how to be properly used. Through the proposed framework, we introduce how to classify an API according to its level of conversation. Besides, we use our framework for evaluating three common Java APIs for managing date/time. Our experience indicates that the proposed conceptual framework may be useful for supporting designers in implementing their API interfaces accordingly to the proper needs of communication required by their different types of users.&nbsp

Code smells are considered symptoms of poor implementation choices, which may hamper the software maintainability. Hence, code smells should be detected as early as possible to avoid software quality degradation. Unfortunately, detecting code smells is not a trivial task. Some preliminary studies investigated and concluded that machine learning (ML) techniques are a promising way to better support smell detection. However, these techniques are hard to be customized to promote an early and accurate detection of specific smell types. Yet, ML techniques usually require numerous code examples to be trained (composing a relevant dataset) in order to achieve satisfactory accuracy. Unfortunately, such a dependency on a large validated dataset is impractical and leads to late detection of code smells. Thus, a prevailing challenge is the early customized detection of code smells taking into account the typical limited training data. In this direction, this paper reports a study in which we collected code smells, from ten active projects, that were actually refactored by developers, differently from studies that rely on code smells inferred by researchers. These smells were used for evaluating the accuracy regarding early detection of code smells by using seven ML techniques. Once we take into account such smells that were considered as important by developers, the ML techniques are able to customize the detection in order to focus on smells observed as relevant in the investigated systems. The results showed that all the analyzed techniques are sensitive to the type of smell and obtained good results for the majority of them, especially JRip and Random Forest. We also observe that the ML techniques did not need a high number of examples to reach their best accuracy results. This finding implies that ML techniques can be successfully used for early detection of smells without depending on the curation of a large dataset.

The development of smart devices, the continuous evolution of software tools and the implementation of new communication protocols make it possible to implement sophisticated techniques for control, supervision and optimization of industrial processes. Digital Twins are an approach for integrating physical systems to virtual counterparts that replicate in the virtual space the operation of real instruments and machines. Its main objective is to improve the real system performance by using information generated by the virtual counterpart, for example, by executing performance analysis, bottleneck identification, failure prediction, detection of deviations and others. Some of the biggest challenges on this context are creating trustworthy models with acceptable computational costs, assuring real-time communication and developing deep analysis methods. This paper presents the development of a modular architecture for implementing Digital Twins. The architecture is based on an open-source tool for process control, lightweight protocols and flexible tools for modeling and 3D visualization. A problem to solve in generative grammar is to account for why children are able to note when a sentence or expression is ambiguous, even if they have not received explicit training for that. The theory of mental models can give an explanation in that way. That explanation is based upon the idea that people interpret linguistic messages by considering the semantics models corresponding to them, and it has been also proposed that the syntactic structures of those messages can be recovered by taken those very models into account. However, the point of this paper is that it tries to show that ambiguity at semantic level, that is, the cases in which models referring to different facts can be attributed to one sentence, does not necessarily lead to ambiguity at syntactic level. As it is argued, it is possible to capture models describing several opposite circumstances by means of only one logical form. Um problema para resolver na gramática generativa é explicar por que os meninos são capazes de notar quando uma frase ou expressão é ambígua, mesmo que não tenham recebido ensino explícito para isso. A teoria dos modelos mentais pode dar uma explicação nesse sentido. Essa explicação é baseada na ideia de que as pessoas interpretam as mensagens linguísticas considerando os modelos semânticos correspondentes a elas, e foi proposto que as estruturas sintáticas dessas mensagens podem ser recuperadas tomando esses mesmos modelos em consideração. No entanto, o ponto deste trabalho é que tenta mostrar que a ambiguidade ao nível semântico, isso é, os casos nos que modelos se referindo a fatos diferentes podem ser atribuídos a uma frase, não necessariamente leva a uma ambiguidade ao nível sintático. Como é argumentado, é possível captar modelos descrevendo várias circunstâncias opostas por meio de uma só forma lógica.

Community resilience is essential for disaster management and its measurement is necessary to support decision-making. This paper presents as first list of community resilience indicators for Brazilian municipalities, resulting from literature review, experts’ consulting and application of the Delphi method. The experts group consisted of public managers (43%) and researchers (57%). The study comprised six phases: conceptual framework selection; composition of the indicators list; elaboration of evaluation tool (Delphi method); selection and invitation to experts; evaluation of indicators; and data analysis. As a result, the importance of 101 indicators distributed in six dimensions (environmental; social; economic; institutional; infrastructure; social capital) achieved consensus among the experts after two rounds. In the first round, 98 indicators were submitted to the evaluation of 97 specialists, with the possibility of proposing new indicators, while in the second round the final list reached consensus among the 72 respondents. The Institutional and Infrastructure dimensions were predominant, evidencing the value of public policies and urban infrastructure for community resilience to disasters in the perception of Brazilian experts. Resumen La resiliencia comunitaria es esencial en la gestión de desastres y su medición es necesaria para apoyar la toma de decisiones. Este artículo presenta una primera lista de indicadores de resiliencia comunitaria desarrollados para municipios brasileños, como resultado de revisión de literatura, consultas con expertos y aplicación del método Delphi. El panel de expertos participantes del método Delphi estaba compuesto por gerentes públicos (43%) e investigadores (57%). El estudio involucró seis etapas: selección del cuadro conceptual, composición de lista de indicadores, elaboración de herramienta de evaluación, selección e invitación de expertos, evaluación de indicadores (método Delphi) y análisis de datos. Como resultado, 101 indicadores distribuidos en seis dimensiones (ambiental, social, económico, institucional, infraestructura y capital social) obtuvieron consenso después de dos rondas del método. Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are a class of advanced composites with a gradual and continuously varying microstructural composition. This paper presents MicroFEA 1.0, which is a software package developed to help overcoming the challenges of designing and analyzing FGM structures. It provides capabilities to fit FGM experimental data to B-Spline curves and to analyze composite materials using mean-field micromechanics homogenization techniques. The package is composed of MATLAB scripts and Fortran subroutines intended for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using Abaqus. The Abaqus user-material subroutines (UMATs) are designed to work with heterogeneous materials at the integration points level, discarding the need for custom-designed elements. Thermomechanical analyses can also be carried out with the help of UTEMPs. This software will provide valuable help for scientists and engineers facing the development of new FGM structural components.

A child learning a language has to figure out what the syntactic, or part-of-speech, categories in her language are and assign words to one or more of them. The question we aim to answer here is how much of this learning can be accomplished through the distributional analysis of utterances. To this end, a reimplementation of Redington, Chater and Finch (1998) computational model was conducted and applied to Brazilian Portuguese input data, obtained from publicly available corpora of both child-directed and adult-to-adult speech. Results from all experiments are presented and discussed. These experiments investigate many variables and aspects involved in this learning task: types of distributional contexts, the number of target and context words, the value of distributional information for different categories, corpus size, etc. A comparison between child-directed speech and adult-to-adult speech is also carried out. In general, our results support Redington et al.’s (1998), although we find some possibly important, and maybe contradictory, differences. We also evaluate the cosine metric, comparing it with performance obtained with the Spearman rank correlation metric used in Redington et al.’s (1998) study. The latter seems to produce better performance. In this paper we focus on a quantitative analysis of our results.

Mobile devices are part of the everyday life of the modern citizen. Currently these devices are used for simple dayto- day tasks, where we need information available on the web or on the mobile device itself (smartphone, tablet, etc.). One area where a number of mobile applications have emerged is urban mobility, for route planning and the use of transport networks. However, few applications have addressed this issue considering the needs of users with some type of disability. This paper describes the development of an Android app intended to be used to provide information on urban mobility, including transport accessibility features. It is intended that this mobile application will provide its users with information about the public transport of a certain city and its schedules including routes covered by each transport and the accessibility of each of them. The application intends to allow to choose the best options, according to the profile of the user its geographical location and the accessibility features of the means of transport of that geographical area.

The objective of this paper was to identify the managerial styles of the leaders of small companies according to the life cycle of these organizations. The research is considered applied, descriptive, quantitative and used the survey procedure. The sample comprised 45 small firms (15.35% of the 232 firms that were part of the regional business association concerned), employing up to 50 employees. In relation to the life cycle, 10 companies were classified in stage 1 (Establishment), 16 in stage 2 (Direction) and 19 in stage 3 (Consolidation). As for the activities, distributed in functions and roles, the most valued regarding the process approach were those of "planner" and "controller" in the three stages mentioned. For the roles, the most valued activities were those of "resource allocator", "monitor" and "entrepreneur" (in stage 1) and for stages 2 and 3 were "leader", "contact" and "monitor". The factors analysis indicated four groups of styles (orientation, direction, public relations and disturbance solver). The main contribution of this study was the generation of subsidies for higher education institutions and business entities in the research focus region to develop policies for training managers in a more customized way, including managers with training in areas other than administrative. Regarding the limitations associated with the study, they are related to the diversity of companies and the size of the sample used., O presente estudo objetivou identificar os estilos gerenciais dos dirigentes de pequenas empresas conforme o ciclo de vida dessas organizações. A pesquisa é considerada de natureza aplicada, descritiva, quantitativa e utilizou o procedimento de survey. A amostra abrangeu 45 pequenas empresas (15,35% das 232 firmas que integravam a associação empresarial regional visada), que empregam até 50 funcionários. Em relação ao ciclo de vida, 10 empresas foram classificadas no estágio 1 (Estabelecimento), 16 no estágio 2 (Direção) e 19 no estágio 3 (Consolidação). Quanto às atividades, distribuídas em funções e papéis, as mais valorizadas em relação à abordagem de processos foram as de “planejador” e “controlador” nos três estágios citados. Para os papéis, as atividades mais valorizadas foram as de “alocador de recursos”, “monitor” e “empreendedor” (no estágio 1) e para os estágios 2 e 3 foram as de “líder”, “contato” e “monitor”. A análise fatorial indicou quatro grupos de estilos (orientação, direção, relações públicas e solucionador de distúrbios). A principal contribuição do estudo residiu na geração de subsídios para que as instituições de ensino superior e entidades empresariais da região foco da pesquisa elaborem políticas de formação de dirigentes de forma mais customizada, contemplando gestores com formações em áreas distintas da administrativa. Quanto às limitações associáveis ao estudo, estão relacionadas à diversidade de empresas e o tamanho da amostra utilizada.

Both, the graphical user interface and the power flow program have been developed in the Matlab environment and it allows the direct change of information between both. Besides, it provides not only a good computational performance, but also an users-friendly teaching software. With the use of this interactive program the user is liberated to edit the input and output data files of the selected systems and can visualize and analyze the results of the program directly in the computer screen. Directly from the system one-line diagram, the graphical interface allows the user change the parameters of the system (bus and lines system data); remove the transmission line clicking directly on it; view the buses voltage profile, and the real and reactive power flows. In addition, the user can obtain all the P-V curves of pre and post-contingency loading margin. All these characteristics make the developed program recommended for educational purpose. O objetivo do artigo foi analisar a preservação digital a partir da abordagem de arquivamento da web, desde as tecnologias envolvidas no processo de arquivamento, bem como políticas de seleção, preservação e disponibilização destes conteúdos, além do estudo de instituições internacionais que atuam na preservação da web. A metodologia utiliza pesquisa bibliográfica e documental sobre iniciativas internacionais de arquivamento da web e objetiva fomentar a discussão no Brasil, assim como servir de subsídio para estudos aplicados. Analisa as publicações científicas na base de periódicos Scopus dos últimos cinco anos (2012-2016) que versam sobre o arquivamento da web, políticas de seleção dos conteúdos web e tecnologias aplicadas à coleta, armazenamento e acesso aos websites arquivados. Traz também um panorama das tecnologias utilizadas pela comunidade de iniciativas de arquivamento da web, a partir da identificação dos dados disponibilizados no site do Consórcio Internacional de Preservação da Internet. Conclui que países que ainda não possuem iniciativas próprias, como o Brasil, com o estabelecimento de políticas de seleção com enfoques específicos (institucionais, temáticas, por domínio, etc.), assim como uma gestão do ciclo de vida do arquivamento da web e a adoção de tecnologias no formato código aberto (open source) podem não só preservar sua memória digital, mas também contribuir com a comunidade internacional de arquivamento da web. The objective of this paper was to analyze digital preservation from the web archiving approach, addressing the technologies involved in the archiving process, as well as policies for the selection, preservation and availability of these contents, as well as the study of international institutions that work on preservation of the web. The methodology uses bibliographic and documentary research on international archival web initiatives and aims to foment the discussion in Brazil, as well as to serve as a subsidy for applied studies. It analyzes the scientific publications based on Scopus journals of the last five years (2012-2016) that deal with web archiving, web content selection policies and technologies applied to the harvest, storage and access to archived websites. It also provides an overview of the technologies used by the community of web archiving initiatives, based on the identification of the data available on the website of the International Internet Preservation Consortium. It concludes that countries that do not yet have their own initiatives, such as Brazil, with the establishment of selection policies with specific approaches (institutional, thematic, domain, etc.), as well as web archive adoption of open source technologies can not only preserve your digital memory but also contribute to the international web archiving communityt. El objetivo del artículo fue analizar la preservación digital a partir del abordaje del archivamiento de la web, desde las tecnologías involucradas en el proceso de archivo, así como políticas de selección, preservación y puesta a disposición de estos contenidos, además del estudio de instituciones internacionales que actúan en la preservación de la información de la web. La metodología utiliza fue la investigación bibliográfica y documental sobre iniciativas internacionales de archivado de la web y objetiva fomentar la discusión en Brasil, así como servir de subsidio para estudios aplicados. Analiza las publicaciones científicas de la base de datos Scopus en los últimos cinco años (2012-2016) que versan sobre el archivamiento de la web, políticas de selección de los contenidos de la web y tecnologías aplicadas a la recolección, almacenamiento y acceso a los sitios web archivados. También trae un panorama de las tecnologías utilizadas por la comunidad que participa de las iniciativas de archivamiento de la web, a partir de la identificación de los datos disponibles en el sitio del Consorcio Internacional de Preservación de Internet. Concluye que países que aún no tienen iniciativas propias, como Brasil, con el establecimiento de políticas de selección con enfoques específicos (institucionales, temáticos, por dominio, etc.), así como una gestión del ciclo de vida del archivo de la web y la adopción de tecnologías en el formato de código abierto (open source) pueden no sólo preservar su memoria digital, sino también contribuir con la comunidad internacional de archivamiento de la web.

Potamius of Lisbon’s highly metaphorical explication of the indissoluble nature of the Trinity in the 4th C theological treatise Epistula de Substantia combines technical knowledge of textile crafts with stylistic manipulation of Latin intertexts and terminology in a metaphor for the unity of the Trinity. This paper explores several passages in De Substantia densely packed with textile terminology and deemed obscure in earlier Potamian criticism, and shows how, based on a detailed knowledge of the practicalities of wool‑preparation as well as of weaving, Potamius enhances the effectiveness of his metaphor by carefully manipulating the presentation of technological detail and intertextual references to earlier descriptions of textile work in Latin literature. Potamius includes references to different loom types to strengthen the impact of his weaving metaphor, and to create correpondences between the set‑up of a loom and crucifixion. Potamius’ understanding of the workings of the warp‑weighted loom is related both to intertexts in Ovid and Seneca and to the archaeological evidence for the continued contextual relevance of this loom type in Lusitania and the Iberian peninsula, and to domestic and traditional craft practices.

With the number of vehicles on the roads increasing rapidly, these problems will tend to worsen. Consequently, huge investments in resources to increase road safety will be required. The vertical R-19 system for optical character recognition of regulatory traffic signs (maximum speed limits) according to Brazilian Standards developed in this work uses a camera positioned at the front of the vehicle, facing forward. This is so that images of traffic signs can be captured, enabling the use of image processing and analysis techniques for sign detection. This paper proposes the detection and recognition of speed limit signs based on a cascade of boosted classifiers working with haar-like features. The recognition of the sign detected is achieved based on the optimum-path forest classifier (OPF), support vector machines (SVM), multilayer perceptron, k-nearest neighbor (kNN), extreme learning machine, least mean squares, and least squares machine learning techniques. The SVM, OPF and kNN classifiers had average accuracies higher than 99.5 %; the OPF classifier with a linear kernel took an average time of 87 mu s to recognize a sign, while kNN took 11,721 ls and SVM 12,595 ls. This sign detection approach found and recognized successfully 11,320 road signs from a set of 12,520 images, leading to an overall accuracy of 90.41 %. Analyzing the system globally recognition accuracy was 89.19 %, as 11,167 road signs from a database with 12,520 signs were correctly recognized. The processing speed of the embedded system varied between 20 and 30 frames per second. Therefore, based on these results, the proposed system can be considered a promising tool with high commercial potential. RESUMO: Este artigo descreve o tratamento da passiva e do passado composto na FrGramm, uma gramática computacional do francês implementada na Gramática Léxico-Funcional (LFG) usando o software XLE. Devido à dualidade de auxiliares e concordância do particípio passado (PTPST), a segunda perífrase exibe uma maior complexidade estrutural em francês do que em línguas como inglês e português, representando, consequentemente, um maior desafio à implementação computacional. Uma dificuldade adicional é a modelação das regularidades morfológicas e sintático-semânticas da passiva. A FrGramm resolve esse problema por meio de uma regra lexical produtiva. Também implementa as restrições que governam a formação das duas perífrases verbais, exceto a concordância do PTPST com o objeto direto. A im ple men ta ção foi avaliada pela aplicação de um analisador sintático automático (parser) a 157 sentenças gra ma ti cais e 279 construções a gramati cais. Todas as sentenças do primeiro con junto foram ana li sa das corretamente. Apenas duas construções do segundo que violam a pre cedência do auxiliar do passado composto so bre o da passiva foram analisadas como gra ma ticais. ABSTRACT: This paper describes the treatment of passive and compound past tense in FrGramm, a computational grammar of French, implemented within Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) using the XLE software. Due to the dual auxiliary system and past participle agreement, the latter periphrasis manifests greater structural complexity and therefore presents a greater challenge to computational implementation in French than in languages such as English and Portuguese. An additional difficulty is modeling the morphological and syntactic-semantic regularities of the passive construction. In FrGramm, this problem is solved by means of a productive lexical rule. FrGramm also implements the constraints governing the building of both verbal periphrases, excepting participle object agreement. The implementation was evaluated by applying a parser to a set of 157 grammatical sentences and a set of 279 ungrammatical sentences. All sentences from the former set were correctly parsed. Only two constructions from the latter set that violate the linear precedence of the compound past auxiliary over the passive auxiliary were analyzed as grammatical. FrGramm is the only LFG grammar of French with similar coverage that is freely available on-line. A future version will handle participle object agreement and avoid the mentioned overgeneration.

Declarative if–then rules have proven very useful in many applications of expert systems. They can be managed in deductive databases and evaluated using the well-known forward-chaining approach. For domain-experts, however, the syntax of rules becomes complicated quickly, and already many different knowledge representation formalisms exist. Expert knowledge is often acquired in story form using interviews. In this paper, we discuss its representation by defining domain-specific languages ( Dsl s) for declarative expert rules. They can be embedded in Prolog systems in internal Dsl s using term expansion and as external Dsl s using definite clause grammars and quasi-quotations – for more sophisticated syntaxes. Based on the declarative rules and the integration with the Prolog -based deductive database system DDbase , multiple rules acquired in practical case studies can be combined, compared, graphically analysed by domain-experts, and evaluated, resulting in an extensible system for expert knowledge. As a result, the actual modeling Dsl becomes executable; the declarative forward-chaining evaluation of deductive databases can be understood by the domain experts. Our Dsl for rules can be further improved by integrating ontologies and rule annotations.

Resumo Métodos de aprendizagem de máquina podem ser usados para auxiliar o projeto de edifícios energeticamente eficientes, reduzindo cargas de energia enquanto se mantém a temperatura interna desejada. Eles operam estimando uma resposta a partir de um conjunto de entradas tais como a geometria do edifício, propriedades do material, custos do projeto, condições do tempo no local e impacto ambiental. Esses métodos requerem uma fase de treinamento que considera uma base de dados construída a partir de variáveis selecionadas no domínio do problema. Este trabalho avalia o desempenho de quatro métodos de aprendizado de máquina na predição de cargas de resfriamento e aquecimento de edifícios residenciais. A base de dados do treinamento consiste de oito variáveis de entrada e duas variáveis de saída, todas derivadas de projetos de edifícios. Os métodos foram selecionados de acordo com uma pesquisa exaustiva e ajustados por uma estratégia com validação cruzada. Para a avaliação foram usadas quatro medidas estatísticas de desempenho e um índice de sintetização e resultados. Essa estratégia resultou em algoritmos com parâmetros otimizados e permitiu obter resultados competitivos com os apresentados na literatura. Abstract Machine learning methods can be used to help design energy-efficient buildings reducing energy loads while maintaining the desired internal temperature. They work by estimating a response from a set of inputs such as building geometry, material properties, project costs, local weather conditions, as well as environmental impacts. These methods require a training phase which considers a dataset drawn from selected variables in the problem domain. This paper evaluates the performance of four machine learning methods to predict cooling and heating loads of residential buildings. The dataset consists of 768 samples with eight input variables and two output variables derived from building designs. The methods were selected based on exhaustive research with cross validation. Four statistical measures and one synthesis index were used for the performance assessment and comparison. The proposed framework resulted in accurate prediction models with optimized parameters that can potentially avoid modeling and testing various designs, helping to economize in the initial phase of the project.

Student dropout is one of the main problems faced by distance learning courses. One of the major challenges for researchers is to develop methods to predict the behavior of students so that teachers and tutors are able to identify at-risk students as early as possible and provide assistance before they drop out or fail in their courses. Machine Learning models have been used to predict or classify students in these settings. However, while these models have shown promising results in several settings, they usually attain these results using attributes that are not immediately transferable to other courses or platforms. In this paper, we provide a methodology to classify students using only interaction counts from each student. We evaluate this methodology on a data set from two majors based on the Moodle platform. We run experiments consisting of training and evaluating three machine learning models (Support Vector Machines, Naive Bayes and Adaboost decision trees) under different scenarios. We provide evidences that patterns from interaction counts can provide useful information for classifying at-risk students. This classification allows the customization of the activities presented to at-risk students (automatically or through tutors) as an attempt to avoid students drop out.

The issues addressed in this study addresses the legal basis of court rulings that suspended the application and the methodology used in the research was a critical review of the applicable law and doctrine until then formulated on the Brazil web legislation., Este artigo analisa decisões judiciais que suspenderam o funcionamento do aplicativo Whatsapp no Brasil, em 2015 e 2016. O Marco Civil da Internet, além de trazer princípios amplamente conhecidos para o segmento digital, introduz um novo fundamento voltado a algo extremamente sensível dentro da rede de computadores, o registro, guarda e armazenagem do conteúdo das aplicações e dos provedores da rede. A problemática abordada neste estudo trata da fundamentação das sentenças judiciais que suspenderam o aplicativo e a metodologia aplicada na pesquisa foi a revisão crítica da legislação aplicável e da doutrina até então formulada sobre o Marco Civil.

Modern Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are pervasive components in Industrial Control Systems (ICS) such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), designed to control industrial processes autonomously or as part of a distributed system topology. Its success may be explained by its robustness and reliability, being one of the most enduring legacies on modern ICS, despite having evolved very little over the last years. This paper proposes an x86-based virtual PLC (vPLC) architecture that decouples the logic and control capabilities from the I/O components, while virtualizing the PLC logic within a real-time hypervisor. To demonstrate the feasibility of this concept, the topic of real-time virtualization for x86 platforms is analyzed, together with an evaluation study of the properties of real-time workloads in partitioned hypervisor environments. The objective of this report Technical is to see how the process of scanning and digital archiving of documents contributed to the Section of Social Communication (PM-5) of the Military Police of São Paulo State (PMESP) decrease the cost of buying their inputs office, reducing the physical space used for storage cabinets and folders by using a virtual storage location. The technical report was developed by a case study on AM-5, wherein, using the standardization routines that minimized the possibility of administrative mistakes, it was possible to implement the said process, so that the file handle stay extremely easy and fast, even when providing copies to applicants. With only a photocopy machine with the function to scan and save the network, it was enough to create a digital file. Thus, it was possible to save on paper and printer ink that were previously necessary and also with funds to purchase files and physical space. Finally, if implemented in relation to the peculiarities of each division, it is possible that the civil service, at least in the case of document file, go to prioritize and treat with due relevance sustainable appeal of this practice., O objetivo deste Relato Técnico é verificar como o processo de digitalização e arquivamento digital de documentos contribuiu para que a Seção de Comunicação Social (PM-5) da Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo (PMESP) diminuísse o custo de compra de seus insumos para escritório, a redução do espaço físico utilizado para armazenamento de armários e pastas por meio do uso de um local virtual de armazenamento. O relato técnico foi desenvolvido por meio de um estudo de caso na PM-5, em que, utilizando-se da padronização de rotinas que minimizou a possibilidade de erros administrativos, foi possível implantar o referido processo, de modo que o manuseio do arquivo ficasse extremamente fácil e rápido, inclusive quando da disponibilização de cópias aos requerentes. Com apenas uma máquina de fotocópia com a função de digitalizar e salvar em rede, foi o bastante para criar um arquivo digital. Com isso, foi possível economizar com folhas e tinta de impressora que, anteriormente eram necessárias e, também com verba para aquisição de arquivos e espaço físico. Por fim, se bem aplicada, em relação às peculiaridades de cada repartição, torna-se possível que o funcionalismo público, ao menos em se tratando de arquivo de documentos, passe a priorizar e tratar com a devida relevância o apelo sustentável desta prática.

The correct data processing of GNSS measurements, as well as a correct interpretation of the results are fundamental factors for analysis of quality of land surveying works. In that sense, it is important to keep in mind that, although, the statistical data provided by the majority of commercials software used for GNSS data processing, describes the credibility of the work, they do not have consistent information about the reliability of the processed coordinates. Based on that assumption, this paper proposes a classification table to classify the reliability of baselines obtained through GNSS data processing. As data input, the GNSS measurements were performed during the years 2006 and 2008, considering different seasons of the year, geometric configurations of RBMC stations and baseline lengths. As demonstrated in this paper, parameters as baseline length, ambiguity solution, PDOP value and the precision of horizontal and vertical values of coordinates can be used as reliability parameters. The proposed classification guarantees the requirements of the Brazilian Law N( 10.267/2001 of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) O correto processamento das medições GNSS, bem como a correta interpretação dos seus resultados, são fatores fundamentais para a análise da qualidade dos trabalhos de medições agrárias. Neste sentido, é importante ter em mente que, embora, os valores estatísticos indicados pela maioria dos programas de computador comerciais de processamento GNSS descrevam a credibilidade do trabalho realizado, eles não são consistentes para indicarem a confiabilidade dos valores das coordenadas processadas. Com base nessa suposição, este artigo propõe uma tabela para classificar a confiabilidade de linhas de base obtidas por meio de processamento de dados GNSS. Como dados de entrada foram utilizadas medições realizadas entre os anos 2006 e 2008, considerando diferentes estações do ano, diferentes configurações das estações RBMC e diferentes comprimentos de linhas de base. Como demonstrado, verifica-se que parâmetros, tais como, comprimentos da linha de base, solução da ambiguidade, valores PDOP e valores da precisão das coordenadas obtidas, podem ser usados como parâmetros de confiabilidade. A classificação proposta garante os requerimentos da Lei N( 10.267/2001 do Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária (INCRA).

Este trabalho analisa o genero discursivo carta do leitor a luz da Teoria da Argumentacao na Lingua desenvolvida por Anscombre, Ducrot (1977, 1987, 1988) e colaboradores para quem a lingua e seus usos sao fundamentalmente argumentativos. A analise incide sobre uma amostragem constituida por 03 cartas dos leitores recortadas de um corpus mais amplos coletado nas revistas Istoe e Veja entre janeiro e marco de 2003. Nesse corpus, identificamos as marcas linguistico-discursivas ativadoras de pressuposto, considerando o dialogismo entre o locutor e os outros enunciadores (vozes sociais) para a constituicao da carta. Os resultados apontaram que a negacao polemica constitui um recurso linguistico produtor de sentido na carta do leitor, mostrando a polifonia de enunciadores como uma das principais estrategias argumentativas nesse genero discursivo. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ The polyphony enunciators in letters from readers: a stated approach Abstract: This paper analyzes the discursive genre reader’s letter to the Theory of Argumentation in language developed by Anscombre, Ducrot (1977, 1987, 1988) and colleagues for whom language and its uses are fundamentally argumentative. The analysis focuses on a sample consisting of 03 letters from readers cut out of a larger corpus collected in magazines and Istoe and Veja between January and March 2003. In this corpus, we identify the linguistic discursive marks activating assumption considering the dialogism between speaker and other enunciators (social voices) for the establishment of the letter. The results showed that the controversy denial is a linguistic resource producer of meaning in the reader’s letter, showing the polyphony enunciators as a major argumentative strategies in this discursive genre. In the development of the applications described in NCL language, it was noticed the reusing for some document models and structures, enabling repetitions for common codes in the applications.Thus, due to the need to generalize the development of applications described in the NCL language was created the Luar templates processing system. The Luar system has a templates processor developed with the Lua language and a library to keep and aggregate the collection of templates, sharing them between the developers.This paper has as goal to present the evaluation of the Luar system through software engineering experimental techniques. Language NCL and Lua courses were taught for undergraduate students group and compared the development time of two applications utilizing the different languages. The result showed that development with the Luar language is more productive than the development purely with NCL. It having the development time economy of 60% to 78% approximately, depending on the kind of application, compared with the authored with NCL.

Resumo O artigo estima a relação entre a implantação do FUNDEF (Fundo de Manutenção e de Desenvolvimento do Ensino Fundamental e de Valorização do Magistério) e a eficiência na gestão municipal do ensino no ano de 2007. Para o cálculo da eficiência, primeiro empregou-se o modelo SBM (slacks basedmeasure) com as características discricionárias. posteriormente, por meio de um modelo Tobit, controlamos o efeito das variáveis não discricionárias. A estimação da relação entre o FUNDEF e a eficiência foi através de modelos de seleção em observáveis. Os dados foram oriundos do Censo Escolar, Prova Brasil Finbra (Finanças do Brasil). Os resultados mostram uma melhoria de eficiência a partir de oito anos de adoção do programa e os estímulos corretos ao processo de descentralização. O trabalho conclui que a criação de uma estrutura de gestão municipal do ensino fundamental eficiente demanda tempo e abre boas perspectivas para os resultados esperados com o FUNDEB (Fundo de Manutenção e Desenvolvimento da Educação Básica e de Valorização dos Profissionais da Educação). Abstract This paper presents an estimation of the relationship between FUNDEF and the efficiency of the Municipal Education Management in 2007. We took two steps to determine the efficiency. In the first step, we used Slack Based Measure models with discretionary variables. In the next step, we used Tobit models to control the effects of the non-discretionary characteristics. The methodology used relates FUNDEF and the efficiency measure through selection models based on observable characteristics. The datasets used were Censo Escolar, Prova Brasil and Finbra. The results indicate an increase in the levels of efficiency after eight years of FUNDEF implementation. This result indicates that the improvement of an efficient local educational structure takes time and provides good perspectives on the results of FUNDEB.

Taking into account the global competitiveness, innovation has become a challenge for organizations. Idea management is an integral part of the innovation process and it is presented as an essential factor for achieving success. Due to the volume and sudden peaks in submissions of ideas, the appropriate analysis and the allocation of resources for investment are important issues to be addressed. The objective of this paper is to present a model for the management of ideas based on ontology and cluster analysis in order to maximize resources for investment in ideas. So as to demonstrate the model feasibility it was prepared a dataset comprised of fifty-five ideas collected from the Starbucks® site. These ideas were then stored in the domain ontology and were used as subsidies for the cluster analysis and for the building of a knowledge base. As a result, it was identified groups with similar ideas that, when analyzed, foster a greater potential for observation and may indicate patterns and trends that can assist in decision making., Diante da competitividade global, inovar tornou-se um desafio para as organizações. A gestão de ideias é parte integrante do processo de inovação e apresenta-se como um fator essencial para obtenção de sucesso do mesmo. Devido ao volume e aos picos repentinos de submissões de ideias, a adequada análise e a destinação de recursos para investimentos são questões importantes a serem tratadas. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar um modelo para a gestão de ideias baseado em ontologia e na análise de agrupamento visando maximizar os recursos para investimentos em ideias. De modo a demonstrar a viabilidade do modelo elaborou-se um conjunto de dados de cinquenta e cinco ideias coletadas a partir do site da empresa Starbucks®. Estas ideias foram então armazenadas em uma ontologia de domínio servindo de subsídio para a análise de agrupamento e a construção de uma base de conhecimento. Como resultado, foram identificados grupos de ideias semelhantes que ao serem analisados promovem um maior potencial de observação e, podem indicar padrões e tendências que auxiliem na tomada de decisão.

Repertoire Remix enables remote audience members to dynamically suggest their musical preferences for live web-streaming musical improvisation sessions. The semantic web interface encourages remote participants to collaboratively use “stirring” mouse gestures to influence the size of graphical bubbles that contain composers’ names. The accumulated weight is then interpreted by musicians to improvise. This paper documents the first pilot run of the Repertoire Remix system, explores challenges in designing a real-time shared music-style arranging system for networked live improvisation, and interprets the resulting performance by assessing the participants’ mouse gestures collected during the pilot run.

Este trabalho propoe reler o texto de Roman Jakobson Por que “mama” e “papa”? com o intuito de retomar a hipotese da descontinuidade relativa a passagem do balbucio ao sistema fonologico de uma dada lingua. Assume-se que, do ponto de vista da interlocucao, a “fala de bebe” indica, nessa passagem, uma relacao simultânea entre continuidade e descontinuidade. Defende-se, ainda, que, nessa simultaneidade, aspectos fisico, fisiologico, cognitivo, psiquico e linguistico encontram sentido na “fala de bebe”, o que permite a passagem do homem da condicao de infans a de falante. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ From babbling to the first words: continuity and discontinuity in the process of becoming a speaker Abstract: This paper suggests a different reading of Roman Jakobson’s text Why “mama” and “papa”?, aiming to reexamine the hypothesis of relative discontinuity in the passage from babbling to the phonological system of a given language. It is assumed that in this passage, from the standpoint of interlocution, the “baby talk” indicates a simultaneous relationship between continuity and discontinuity. It is also argued that in this simultaneity physical, physiological, cognitive, psychic, and linguistic aspects find meaning in the “baby talk”, which enables an individual to go from the condition of infans to speaker.
