- Abstract
Goans, among other Asians, have been settled in Mozambique for several centuries. This settlement occurred mainly during the process of Portuguese colonization. In this context, several Asian communities settled in Mozambique and became native, giving origin to phenomena of biological, cultural and, perhaps, linguistic hybridization. These phenomena are analyzed in the fields of History, Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, and Cultural Studies but have been marginalized by linguists. In fact, descriptions of languages in Mozambique do little more than acknowledge the existence of Asian languages in the country. There are no sociolinguistic studies on the number of speakers of the various Asian languages, the domains of use of those languages, and the attitudes of Asian-language speakers towards Bantu languages or Portuguese. There are no studies on the contact and possible influence of Asian languages and cultures on Bantu languages and cultures or vice-versa. Therefore, proposals with regard to cultural diversity and inclusive education in Mozambique perpetuate the marginalization of students who are native speakers of Asian languages, the vehicle of their home cultures. In this paper, I will present a brief review of work in History, Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, and Cultural Studies on the settlement of Goans and other Asian communities in Mozambique and, on this basis, suggest future paths for linguistic studies that might fill in the gap identified.
