A few companies around the world are now developing and selling sex robots. Questions such as “how will relationships with robots’ impact human relations in the future” emerge when technologies are used to meet the social and emotional needs of individuals. Considering that technology and design have embedded values and biases, this article surveys the use of sex robots from a bioethical perspective. Relationships with robots and computational systems, like Artificial Intelligence, are a possibility for many people around the world. We present questions raised by the voices in favor of robot sex, and against it. Beyond a binary polarization, the bioethical perspective recalls the Foucaultian concepts of biopolitics and biopower to situate the problems with the mechanization of intimate relationships. We argue that sex robots offer the opportunity to review old patterns regarding gender, inequality, and health.

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the main ethical, legal and social implications (ELSIs) concerning social humanoid robots that have their base in artificial intelligence (AI). The main dilemma highlighted touches upon the expansion of the concept of legal personhood, and the attribution of appropriate legal responses to govern the future proliferation of AI systems vis-à-vis social humanoid robots. The paper cautions on the need to carefully reflect on notions of personhood and human dignity for AI systems, balanced against the underlying representation of values and behaviors that may threaten to erode the human rights discourse. Additionally, it questions the wisdom of the broad expanse of the European legal response to the development and use of AI systems.

Introduction: To evaluate the overall impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics on employment and work organization is complicated by the fact that these technologies are expected to revolutionize many application fields, which are very different from each other. In this paper, we consider two specific applications emerging from recent research projects: one applies AI and Robotics technologies to the healthcare sector, and one to Search and Rescue in wilderness areas. We generalize from these case studies to speculate on how this kind of innovative applications, that are likely to become increasingly common and widespread, might impact employment and work organization in general. Objectives: To understand how innovative applications might impact employment and work organization in general and specifically on healthcare and social services. Methods: Two recent research developments based on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the fields of healthcare and rescuing, respectively, are discussed. Therefore, our research work and main results have been achieved within a Swiss National Science Foundation project and a simplified view of the innovative classification component of the architecture is presented. Results: AI and Robotics technologies have specific application on healthcare and social services and demand new professional skills to manage those new methods. Conclusions: We conclude that, depending on the application field, a reduction in the workforce required to carry out tasks that will be taken over by automation might be counterbalanced by either a drastic increase in demand (healthcare services), or a shift in the required competences/skills (search and rescue); in both cases, we can expect a positive societal impact, also motivated by an increased standard of service.

Multi-Robot Systems (MRS) have been applied to the industrial sector extremely effectively, especially in intelligent warehouses, increasing efficiency and reducing operating costs. Most of the projects developed in this area are validated only in virtual simulators, making the implementation of these systems in real applications considerably difficult, due to their inability to faithfully reproduce all variables present in the real world. On the other hand, developing a totally real structure that meets the necessary conditions for the development of these systems could be both technically and financially unfeasible. This work presents an environment for experimentation of advanced behaviors in intelligent warehouses, allowing the experimentation of systems with multiple robots (MRS), interconnected, cooperative and interacting with virtual elements. The ARENA concept introduces a new approach to realistic and immersive experimentation in industrial environments, with the aim of evaluating new technologies aligned with Industry 4.0. The proposed method consists of reproducing a small-scale warehouse, inspired by a real scenario, managed by a group of autonomous, interconnected forklifts, incorporated by a ROS (Robot Operating System) architecture-compliant micro-robot swarm. Augmented Reality (AR) is employed to enhance the capabilities of these robots, allowing them to exhibit characteristics unfeasible by their size, such as the movement of goods and the adoption of certain sensors. Another application of RA is the insertion of resources that help in the accomplishment of the experiments, such as: marking of the traveled path, division of areas by color and marking of specific positions. Virtual Laser Range Finders (LRF) are specially designed from information from a global RGB-D camera, positioned over the environment, to improve robot perception, to detect obstacles and map the environment. All these features give the solutions developed through this platform a level of development very close to the level required for effective practical application.

Humans have never lived with so many robots. In this context, the intensification of military robotization is closely related to the emergence of the Digital Age and to the digitization of the armed forces – understood as the accelerated use of ICT to perform traditional military functions. In the United States, more than thirty systems are currently under development and/or operating. It is estimated that the country has more than twenty thousand robots capable of operating on land, at sea and in the air. This work is therefore dedicated to the broad study of military robotization. More specifically, it seeks to fulfill two main objectives. The first one is related to the need to understand the relationship between war and technology in the Digital Age. The second objective of the thesis is to verify how the military has been dealing with the incorporation of such systems. In order to do so, the dissertation uses a model developed to aid in the planning and analysis of military capabilities known as “force design”. It draws from, but is not limited to, studying the case of the United States, from which the dissertation intends to derive broader lessons applicable to other contexts.

This paper addresses the problem of programming, control and availability of distributed robots teams. Systems based on robots working together collaboratively has been the subject of much research in recent years. Because the rapid spread of technologies in mobile devices and Internet, as well as the benefits that robotics adds to the various everyday applications, the trend is that more and more it is present in various activities of human beings. For distributed robots systems there is a latent need for research to enable the use of such systems by end users with no or almost no experience with programming or robotics. Thus, this paper proposes a system architecture that allows the creation and programming of robots teams, allowing and users to manage them as a single system and simple way using collective knowledge acquired both programmers as of the and users. The tests are performed by an application that was developed under the concepts of this architecture. It provides a set of special operations by which and users can connect, create and control robots teams at high level. The experiments use LEGO Mindstorms® robots as members of two robot teams. The process of creation, programming and control of the teams is presented in well defined steps. The results are satisfactory and show that the operating strategy of the proposed system meets fundamental aspects at the system level such as modularity, flexibility and ease of access for end users.

The development of minimally invasive surgical techniques represents an important aspect of modern surgical research. Robot-assisted minimally invasive colorectal surgery represents a way of assisting laparoscopic colorectal procedures. Robotic technology overcomes some of these limitations by successfully providing intuitive motion and enhanced precision and accuracy, in an environment that is much more ergonomic. A restrict number of surgeons in specialized centers around the world have been applying robotics. In this review, current evidence about different technologies and its place in colorectal surgery is evaluated. The feasibility of performing robot-assisted colorectal operations has been demonstrated though case series and small case-controlled trials. The potential for enhancing autonomic nerve preservation during proctectomy may be the most remarkable advantage associated to robotic assistance during laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Colorectal surgeons should seize the opportunity to begin to use surgical robotic systems. Only through widespread surgeon training and increasing clinical experience with these systems, further technological developments, and continuous research, robotic technology will be routinely incorporated into surgical procedures on the colon and rectum.

One of the great interests in mobile robotics is using artificial intelligence algorithms. The main point of this work is using and simulate artificial intelligence applied in obstacle avoidance control. The simulations are dynamics it means that the robot do not have previous information about the scenery. The artificial intelligence algorithms developed in this work are Fuzzy and Neurofuzzy logics. The simulator contributions are that the simulation and 3D visualization where the scenery is a 3D model from a CAD/3D software besides allows to test many configurations before testing the real robot and simulates noise from sensors and uses fuzzy and neurofuzzy logics to obstacle avoidance. The results show the fuzzy system capability to deal with the noisy data from sensors and how fuzzy variables influences the mobile robot behavior in obstacle avoidance besides the ability of neurofuzzy system to learn from training data showing improvements in the simulation results.

In this work, we propose a new strategy to the problem of learning rules in a Evolutionary System that is applied for mobile robotics using a NOMAD 200 robot. This strategy is based on Genetic AIgoriths and Classifier Systems theories, which are the paradigms of the implemented architecture core for robot controI. The unique feature of this approach is the inspiration on Genetic AIgorithms with Ages. This feature allows the algorithm to make use of a controlled variable size population. The system was designed respecting the physical features of the ~OMAD 200 robot. It is composed by modules of memory, reproduction, populational control and execution. The memory is the base for production rules. The reproduction module is a conventional GA, with operators for selection, crossover and mutation. The population control allows the use of a variable size population, based on the usability and the similarity of the rules on the situations presented to the robot. Finally, the execution module is responsable for the interaction between the robot and the environment, making the sensors reading and action application from the actuators and, if necessary, activating the security functions to preserve the physical integrity of the robot. To give support to the proposal, it was validated through several experiments, performed both in a simulated environment and in a real NOMAD 200 robot, in several cenarios. The environments used in the experiments ranged from open spaces to labyrinths with obstacles and ortogonal walls. Vle present the results and data analysis for each one of the experiments. AIso, the population behavior is analysed, by the observation of his growing and average age and the events occurred during the learning process, to confirm the features of these approach. The main contribution of this work is the use of "AGE"and ""CSABILITY"in a CS based system. The usability replaces the strength attribute and respective calculations necessary in the process of choosing rules in traditional CS. Because of this change, our solution is simpler to implement than traditional CS systems. Besides that, the usability can be used as fitness value, making possible the use of conventional selection techniques. The Age is responsible for the decision of to preserve or to elliminate individuaIs from the population. The choose of individuaIs is done by a penalty and reward strategy, which permits a variable size population of rules with genetic diversity and avoid the population's homogenization. The use of the age for decision making aIso preserves the system developer from the task of defining these parameters.
