The article aims to present the context of south of Bahia and to understand how the socioenvironmental conflicts related to the conflicts between antagonistic education and rural development projects are generated in the process of campestral territoriality and its confrontation against the pulp and paper industries. Based on the literature review and the interviews with the inhabitants of this territory, we conclude that the articulation of social movements and other interlocutors presses the socioenvironmental contradictions in the dispute for the territory, as well as presses an anti-hegemonic model of education and production that oppose the anti-ecological and social model inequality of agribusiness, by the articulation of social movements and other interlocutors offer potential contribution to the formation of sustainable societies. This paper aims to demonstrate the existence of viable margins for the construction of rural development projects that take advantage of the small gaps in the configuration of the current economic system. The paper supports the idea that policies can serve as instruments for democratic appropriation of the State and markets, favoring the social reproduction of family farming, a central segment from the perspective of development herein adopted. The methodology employed relied on theoretical reflection and interviews with farmers, extension workers and public managers in the municipality of Pelotas-RS, Brazil. From the analyses of the empirical setting of this work and other spatial contexts, the paper discusses examples where the use of public institutions and markets led to advances or mitigated problems faced by historically deprecated segments, such as family farming in Brazil. This demonstrates the potential of local contexts to act as protagonists in coping with a structurally imposed unequal logic. The study concludes that there is no need to break with the economic system to then pursue the construction of future alternatives, and the multiple open possibilities in places may be a starting point for the construction of new projects towards the future. From the peasant logic, part of the settlers in the Andradina Region produce beyond their needs; consequently, they transform part of the production into merchandise, in order to buy what they do not produce. By guaranteeing, through their daily struggle, the social existence in the land of work, the settled peasants generate virtuous dynamics, with the supply of food and the circulation of income on the local scale being all too significant. In this context, the paper analyzes the results of the implementation of rural settlements, either by the demand for goods and services, or by the participation and changes in local power relations. In the light of the theoretical framework, which understands the existence of the Brazilian agrarian question and considers the peasantry as a social class, the investigation was carried out in the methodological path of dialogue with theory, articulating it with data obtained in the countryside and in the city; oral sources and in loco information have guided the analysis of the development of rural settlements beyond the countryside. Therefore, the impulse given by the settlers to the demands for agricultural products, goods and services, and others, is evidence of the benefits that the democratization of land brings to the city as well. The purpose of this paper is to bring the theory of reciprocity closer to the rural networks analysis methodology, in the context of endogenous rural development in mountain environments. The main idea behind the concept of rural networks is to give a new meaning to the expression 'rural development'. This re-signification arises from the observation of the diversity of territories and populations that exist in regions that are making the border between rural and urban increasingly invisible. Moreover, from this finding, the authors identify the need for a new methodology that can, at the same time, look at the spaces through the concept of networks and think rural development as something beyond mercantile exchanges. The proposal to approach the theory of reciprocity is to better understand, and hence justify, a differentiated look within social organizations, their functioning and the interconnections that can coexist within groups. It was found, in both theories, points of convergence; one of them is to make increasingly the formulation, application and analysis of public policies. A second point is the perception of spaces from the concept of social networks. Thus, it is in the junction of very close thoughts that the article proposes the analysis of these new forms of territories occupation, especially those that are in mountainous regions and are destined to the rural production in sustainable bases, with the objective of contributing with the construction of knowledge in the scenarios of public policies and endogenous rural development. This paper aims to calculate and to analyze a rural development index for the municipalities of Pará state, Brazil. The index was calculated by the factor analysis method. The variables used in the model were retrieved from the 2000 and 2010 population census; Human Development Atlas - UNDP (2013), and census of agriculture (2006). The results unveiled that most of the municipalities of Para presented low rural development index values. The greater is the isolation and the difficulty to access the areas, the worse it is the infrastructure found in those rural areas. Colonization of new areas was not followed by the implementation of services and the required infrastructure to provide life quality for both native and the migratory population that installed in the rural areas of Para state, Brazil. In December 1961, Venezuela signed a technical cooperation agreement with the State of Israel in the context of its agrarian reform. As a result, a group of Israeli experts provided assistance for several years in a series of regional projects and in building local expertise in rural development. Their involvement helped Venezuela’s agrarian reform quickly gain momentum; however, it would be a mistake to believe that this achievement was solely due to the Israeli contribution. By highlighting the differences and continuities in some official policies concerning rural development in Venezuela before and after the passing of the Agrarian Reform Law of 1960, this paper will demonstrate that while Venezuelan democracy wanted to make a clean break from the past and promoted important structural changes that provided a greater degree of spatial and social justice in the countryside, there were also many continuity elements involving previous rural development policies. The technical expertise that made the agrarian reform possible, as well as the set of ideas and ideals that propelled its implementation, were built in part on a succession of previous experiences that paved the way for what was to come.

The concepts of rural and urban are used to distinguish two different ways of spatial seizure and organization as well as the social relationships which take place therein. From the viewpoint of Sociology these concepts lead to classical themes such as modern and traditional dichotomy and to country-city relationships. This paper analyzes how these two spatial ways are delimited in Brazil and examines the criteria that should be used in order to classify a locality as either rural or urban. Starting from a critique of the statistical and administrative classifications, we seek to establish a typology that takes into consideration the social processes that determine the territorial dynamics of Brazilian municipalities.
