2011. The following paper sets out some of the dominant themes that have characterized a decades- long debate in Italy on inner areas. In fact, in the country there is an almost total coincidence between the two connotations, which somewhat complicates the picture of socio-economic and environmental problems that policy must address. Unfortunately, it must be noted that, albeit in different ways, various measures to support inner areas have not produced significant results because some social, economic and territorial pathologies have proven to be physiological and therefore unassailable by any kind of targeted measure. Currently, the issue is being taken up again with much energy, including through the formulation of intervention hypotheses involving recently intensified dynamics, such as immigration, and reviving concepts such as territorial cohesion, landscape restoration, and small municipality. The paper considers these various points by exploring some of their characters and highlighting the many weaknesses that still risk thwarting initiatives underway today if simplistic equations are insisted upon and criteria of more pronounced complexity are not pursued.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.28.2022.5

This paper discusses the issue of racism in the interaction between individuals in a neighborhood of Lima, Peru. We examine the transformation of social roles that the individuals elaborate and assume for themselves through the economic thematic isotopy. To accomplish this work, ethnographic research was performed in the Gamarra neighborhood, and we used Greimasian semiotics, socio-semiotics, and tensive semiotics as theoretical framework to examine the constitution and transformation of social meanings that base racial discrimination between different social groups in the examined space. It is proposed in this paper to analyze discourses about the immigrant taking as a theoretical basis the bakhtinian perspective of dialogic language, especially on the conception of future memory and study of the utterance. From the dialogues constructed in the journalistic media on the immigrant, two charges are considered for the analysis. They were published in 2018 in the french newspaper Le Monde and shared by the french blog GalliaWatch. Both charges bring as a theme the episode of rescue of a child performed by malian immigrant Mamoudou Gassama in May 2018, in the city of Paris. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the complexities of the help-seeking process of minoritized women (primarily asylum-seekers and immigrants) experiencing domestic violence in Northern Ireland. The term ‘minoritized’ is used here to emphasize that “minority” status is not a static or innate trait of certain groups but instead is the outcome of a process of being positioned as a minority. The paper addresses the intersections of ethnicity, nationality, class and gender and shows how state policies in relation to immigration and social security reinforce inequalities in gendered power relations. Despite attempts to improve the social security and immigration systems, the findings from a Northern Ireland study show how recent policy changes have not addressed the systemic institutional racism and institutionalised patriarchy in these agencies. Where avenues for action are undermined by such practices, the policies raise concerns about the safety and protection of minoritized women living in abusive relationships. We argue that the UK is failing to meet its human rights responsibilities to provide adequate support and assistance to minoritized women in abusive relationships and conclude that delivering state accountability alongside a human rights framework based on security, autonomy, liberty and equality is what is needed. Our paper draws on our ethnographic work regarding transnational adoption, unauthorized immigration, and deportation in order to examine the grids of intelligibility that produce adoptability and deportability. Adoptable babies, unauthorized migrants, and deportable aliens are, in some sense “off the grid” in that aspects of their pasts took place elsewhere, or are unknown or sealed, thus enabling them to be excluded or removed from particular polities. Such individuals appear to move – between statuses, territories, and states of being. At the same time, the very possibility of such movements, indeed, of alienability, unsettles the very grids of kinship, property, nationality, and belonging on which exclusions and removals are based. Adoption, migration, and deportation are therefore processes that disturb and fascinate, as evidenced by the numerous news articles about adoptees who return to discover their “roots,” or the hardships and successes of migrants. These stories are not only about the individuals involved but also the nations and assumptions about national “essences” that make it possible to “locate” persons. Our analysis seeks to interrogate these assumptions, while providing alternatives to the grids of deservingness and ideas about a child’s “best interest” that underpin immigration policy and adoption law. Linguistics ,P1-1091 - Abstract
This paper examines the pioneering model of World Englishes formulated by Kachru in the early 1980s that allocates the presence of English into three concentric circles: first of all, the inner circle (Great Britain, the USA) where the language functions as an L1 (or native language); secondly, the outer circle (India, Nigeria) where the language was forced upon the subjugated people by Britain; thirdly, the expanding circle (China, Brazil) where English is studied as a foreign language. Researchers in the area of language studies tend to put too much store in Kachru's model expecting it to expose the different circles: (i) the proficiency level of the speakers, (ii) the variation that exists in the different dialects of the language, and (iii) how the many users appropriate the language to perform their daily routine. Pung (2009) suggests "going beyond" the three circle model with his proposal of a Conical Model of English (CME), while Park and Wee (2009, p.402) state that models have no "magical efficacy in challenging dominant ideologies of English" and that change in the world is not brought about by models but my people. Based on Park and Lee's caution with regard to models, and in lieu of Pung's "going beyond" the well-known Kachruvian model, the thrust of this article is to look specifically under the inner circle, that is, the supposed "native speaker domain". It will be argued in this paper that the circles function as a palimpsest erasing and ignoring what happened in the past linguistically, historically and culturally before the appearance of English in the spaces that the language occupies at the present time in the inner, outer, and expanding circles. An examination of days gone-by, with a focus on Kachru's inner circle, can present a mirror to examine: (i) bilingual (multilingual) biases, (ii) migration of peoples and treatment of immigrants, (iii) respect (or lack of) for the linguistic and cultural rights of minorities, and (iv) the hegemony of English in relation to other languages - issues that concern us today and will continue to do so in the coming years.

Due to colonization and migratory movements, the Portuguese language can be found all over the globe. In Japan, it is mainly spoken by the Brazilian and other Latin American immigrant communities that have been established there since the early 1990s, in most cases, employed as a cheap workforce. Since then, this newly emerged Portuguese variety underwent a process of language change: in the vocabulary and phonology. In this paper, we would like to provide examples and arguments that support the idea that this language variety is a sociolect.

TRANSNATIONALISM , *INTIMACY (Psychology) , *AFFECT (Psychology) , *ATTITUDE (Psychology) , *HABIT - Abstract
Unlike in other times, the immigrant today continues to maintain ties and close and continuous relationships with their country of origin, exerting an important psychosocial and cultural role in both countries. This paper examines, in particular, resonances of transnationalism in subjectivity, taking as object of analysis an Angolan song that portrays feelings of estrangement of a woman, because of the attitudes and behaviors of her husband, who had newly returned from Brazil. In the lyrics, the woman complains that her husband returned quite brazilianized, expressing in the relationship with her habits that she considers weird, inappropriate and offensive, according to local customs and morality. It is possible, according to this song, to see how the theme of emigration towards Brazil is present in the minds of Angolans and how they feel affected by the transubjectivity of their countrymen who return to home and instill foreign and transgressive elements in the innermost intimacy of their culture, here represented by the affective and sexual life of a couple. In the last decade, Brazil has been experiencing a new cycle of international migration. The migrant population living in Brazil grew by 20% approximately, according to International Organization for Migration. The objective of this paper is to analyse the insertion of foreign workers in the Brazilian formal labour market, investigating returns to schooling of migrants compared with natives and the positive or negative discrimination that can exist in the formal job market. To perform the research of this paper, the Annual Report on Social Information database is used, analysing the period from 2010 to 2017. The methodology used to calculate the rate of return on education of native and foreign workers is based on Mincer's equation. Mincer’s equation is estimated econometrically, in which the dependent variable, the log of wage or labour income, is regressed in years of schooling of the person and other controls. The return to education demonstrates a positive discrimination of international formal workers in Brazil and a convergence in return rates between native and immigrants: international return rate is approximately 37% in 2010 and approximately 20% in 2017, while native return rate remains constant during the period, approximately 15%. This paper presents the results of research that aimed to understand the institutionalization of the first ethnic schools in Parana, its form of organization of the curriculum and how articulated the historical process of the country in the early of the First Republic. The ethnic schools taught language and the preservation of their culture. On the other hand, the immigration process accelerated the colonization movement in Paraná, with occupation of empty spaces propitious to the development of agriculture, trade and industry and the substitution of slave labor by wage labor. Thus, there was encouraging the development of cities, which stimulated trade and encouraged the setting up of infrastructure. In this historical context seek to understand the importance of the role and influence of ethnic schools for the educational organization in Parana until their extinction with the nationalization policy which caused changes in the organization of these didactic and educational institutions. The theoretical-methodological axis allows to reconstruct a totalitarian history, analyzing the determinants of economic, political and social. To understand the institutionalization of ethnic schools in Paraná, started from the analysis of this situation, as well as surveying and cataloging of primary and secondary sources, in selected public institutions, museums and private collections. This paper aims to discuss how Facebook users reacted to the news that the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil) introduced social quotas for socially vulnerable transsexuals, immigrants and refugees. It tries to understand how lexicogrammatical choices might represent the various social entities which are present in users’ comments. Data was automatically scraped from Facebook using Netvizz, and “R” scripts were written to process and analyse linguistic features. Results show that most of the comments are related to the interactions amongst users during the process of taking a stand in favour and against the system of quotas. There are also comments related to prejudice against northeast citizens and states. Grammatical patterns could be identified for each of those general themes present in the comments. This article looks at the transformation of the geography of immigration in sparsely populated areas (rural, peri-urban, small towns) in France since the late 1990s, using a multi-dimensional approach. The spatial dynamics of immigration are most of the time studied in a segmented way and according to a single dimension - the geographical origin of individuals in general. To better understand the complexity of the socio-spatial changes of immigration in low-density areas of mainland France, this paper takes into account the variety of individuals' geographic origins as well as their social and demographic characteristics. The results presented are based on the exploitation of 1999 and 2015 detailed census data and an exploratory multivariate analysis method at two levels. First, at the individual level, the analyses show that the profiles of immigrants in sparsely populated areas have changed since the end of the 1990s, on the one hand, by the aging of part of the population from the former waves of labor immigration from Europe and North Africa and, on the other hand, by the emergence of new profiles with more varied geographic origins and social characteristics. Secondly, at the macro level, this research shows that these changes are also spatial in nature, by revealing six major dynamics of the geographical patterns of immigration. Thus, the article contributes to recent work on the diversification of immigration outside of large urban regions and offers new avenues of research for local analyses.

This paper will discuss the different patterns of family insertion developed by immigrants arrived to Madrid between 1860 and 1878. In spite of its lack of an industrial development, Madrid experimented during these decades an important demographic growth due to the constant arrival of new inhabitants in search for a job. Rather than analyse the raisons that impelled these immigrants to come to Madrid or enumerate which were their regions of origin, the aim of this paper is to describe and reconstruct the ways these immigrants managed to create their home at the great city. The different patterns of arrival to the city (alone, in couple or with a family yet formed) and the family networks they had at their disposal conditioned the status and the living conditions that the immigrants finally had in the city. The study presented is circumscribed to one of Madrid’s new neighbourhoods stemmed from capital’s urban enlargement: the Ensanche Este, whose municipal census has been analysed as main source of research.

Imigrantes. Política de saúde. Epidemias. Profissionais. Médicos. Estado de São Paulo, Saúde pública. The European immigration to the southeastern region of Brazil due to the necessity of labor in the coffee plantations in the last decades of the 19th century and beginning of the 20 is a well-kown topic of study. But what still remains to be explored is the relation between immigration and the sanitary reform that took place at the time. The state of São Paulo has a very sad story of Italian immigrants exposed to the virulance of the transmissible diseases. This caotic situation was the beginning of a movement for the health reform. The farmers considered immigration a vital input to the coffee economy and there was a strong commitment of the urban elites and the national government to show the world that Brazil wanted to erase its bad public health reputation. Reformists and their actions elected the European Immigrant as the first target for health improvement. This paper presents some data related to such actions and analyses the way foreign countries – particularly Italy – sent medical and other missions to evaluate and improve the health conditions of their countrymen, workers in the rural and urban areas in Brazil. A phenomenon related to the efforts of the health inspectors was the consolidation of a fairly large “Italian” medical profession and the opening of “Italian” hospitals in São Paulo and other parts in Brazil. These two aspects of the beginning of the public health movement in Brazil – the impact of immigration and the setting up of the medical profession - are the main focus of analysis inthis paper. Both the theoretical corpus of intercultural clinical psychology (ethnopsychiatry) and its clinical practice have identified certain analogies between torture and terrorism, particularly in the action dynamic and in certain effects such as traumatism. And yet, at the Sapsir (Service d'Aide Psychologique Spécialisée aux Immigrants et Réfugiés at Université Laval, Canada) refugees and torture victims often do not show the expected symptoms of exposure to extreme situations. The case study related in this paper, show that important variables appear to be a strong attachment to a cultural identity and an active sense of belonging to the reference group. These cultural elements favour the psychological protection of the individual and maintain an internal sense of security by placing the individual in a rich, meaningful cultural universe, and giving him the status of an active subject rather than a passive victim. Abstract: The paper hypothesizes that young people sociolects in sensitive urban cities in contemporary France require a global and multidisciplinary approach to be understood because of their complexity. Based on two linguistic corpora, the article first sets up a general multidisciplinary theoretical framework designed to understand the social environment of the young people in question and then, in a second part, more specifically focused on a sociolinguistic study of the nonstandard varieties of French those young people speak, it attempts to show that those sociolects are emblematic of the social interactions at work in these minority spaces. Both corpora presented are part of an identity construction and of a collective social memory, rooted in sensitive urban cities. They reflect life in segregated cities and in particular the presence of migrant communities. They contribute to the establishment of a process of patrimonialization characterized by otherness, based on a community solidarity and an original form of memory that express a collective experience. Keywords: immigration ; sociolinguistics ; young people sociolects ; sensitive urban cities.

This study provides evidence of possible sociodemographic characteristics that would influence the intention of Brazilian immigrants to engage in ventures in Canada. Data were collected through surveys released on Brazilian Facebook groups. A total of 675 Brazilian respondents living in Canada were triangulated with data from seven semi-structured interviews conducted in Canada and with two consulate officials. Survey data analysis was performed with logit equations to check relationships between entrepreneurial intention (EI) and variables — namely, gender, age upon arrival, level of education, length of stay in the country, student/work/tourist visa status upon arrival, and citizenship application status/permanent migration. The key results point to factors with a positive influence on the intention to venture: gender (being female) and all visa status and other variables were either non-significant or had a negative influence. Of the entrepreneurs, age upon arrival was a significant predictor. Variables such as level of education, time in the country, and tourist visa had a negative influence. This paper contributes theoretically by evidencing recent immigration patterns and variables related to entrepreneurial venturing in the Brazilian immigrant community in Canada, which may support mechanisms for attracting and fostering future entrepreneurs. Further comparative studies between other Brazilian and ethnic communities are proposed, including other variables.

The paper compares various forms of the thesis which states that the type of colonization determines or shapes the fate of societies. Smith (1776) already presented this proposition and a typology of colonies. Yet the German authors Heeren (1817) and Roscher (1856) were responsible for the elaboration of the thesis. These historians influenced the economist Leroy-Beaulieu (1902). And it was from this French economist that Caio Prado Júnior took the thesis “settlement colony versus exploitation colony” and applied it to the Brazilian history. In the United States, the idea reappears in the works of North (1955, 1959) and Baldwin (1956). More recently, economic historians Engerman and Sokoloff (1997) elaborated on the issue but without reference to European authors. Finally, Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson (2001, 2002) spread the thesis to a wider academic audience and presented econometric evidences. The paper concludes that the academic success of the thesis stems from its flexibility. Market-friendly analysts can attribute economic development to the quality of institutions associated with settlement colonies, while the more critical ones emphasize the spoiling character of the colonies of exploitation.
