Electrostimulation has been used for many years in the rehabilitation of patients. There are low frequency currents, modulated at a frequency between 1 and 200Hz and medium frequency currents, modulated between 1,000 and 10,000Hz. Among these currents is low frequency functional electrical stimulation (FES) and medium frequency Russian and Aussie current. The aim of this study is to compare the different currents of low and medium frequency showing the most effective in the production of force. This is a literature review that included the databases SCIELO, LILACS, BVS, MEDLINE. Articles comparing low and medium frequency currents without language restriction from 2008 to 2020 were included; Were used the keywords: Transcutaneous nerve electrostimulation, electrical stimulation therapy, muscle strength, pulsed current and russian current, as used in the researched articles. In the literature, 344 articles were found with the title relevant to the subject and correspondence to the descriptors. After analysis of abstracts, there were 10 articles that compared the currents. There is no consensus on the effectiveness of currents, with some articles showing divergent results as to the most effective current, and other articles claim that currents have no significant differences compared to each other. In articles that used a control group, most showed improvement when associated with electrostimulation compared to the group that did not use it. Another data demonstrated in the articles was discomfort, assessed by the Visual Analog Scale, which also did not show consistency in the results. It is not possible to state which of the currents is more effective due to the divergence of results found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Blogs constitute an important space for the expression of feelings, experiences and opinions; thus, it became relevant to investigate what has been published related to psychotropic drugs. Objective: To analyze publications related to psychotropic drugs in blogs, in Portuguese. Methods: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. A blog platform called TUMBLR was chosen as a source for data collection. The publications eligible for the study were all those in the Portuguese language classiied as "most popular", of the "text" or "quotation" type, and identiiable by means of the words "Antidepressivos" (Antidepressants); "Ansiolíticos" (Anxiolytics), and "Antipsicóticos" (Antipsychotics) using the search icon of the site. Results: The themes that represent the main topics addressed in the publications and that were included in this study are the following: "Negative perceptions on psychotropic drugs''; "Positive perceptions on psychotropic drugs and on support networks"; "Impacts of mental illness and psychotropic drugs use", and "Destructive behavior and psychotropic drugs". Conclusions: The negative perceptions on psychotropic drugs was the most promi- nent theme, followed by the positive perceptions that some individuals attribute to these medications. Has relevance the support networks in facing up the process of mental illness and distress, with Tumblr being mentioned as a support network. Highlighted some reports of destructive behaviors and of suicidal ideation that might or might not be linked to the use of psychotropic drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMUNICATION , *CONTENT analysis , *MANUSCRIPTS , *RESEARCH methodology , *SERIAL publications , *THEMATIC analysis , *DESCRIPTIVE statistics - Abstract
Introduction: Considering the importance of the Brazilian journal Interface among the Collective Health journals and as a space of production of knowledge and practices in the area in Latin America, this work aimed at mapping the scientific production related to communication in its various dimensions throughout the magazine's 20 years of existence (1997 to 2017). Methodology: This is a descriptive study of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of production on communication through content analysis. Results: During this period, the journal published 1,343 manuscripts among which 154 were related to communication, representing 11.47% of all papers. Empirical studies were predominant (52.6%), followed by theoretical studies (25.97%). The identified thematic fields were: Media (26.62%); Collective Health (26.62%); Professional education (16.88%); Professional relationship, patient/family/service (14.29%); Information and Communication Technologies (9.09%); and Communication and society (1.3%). Conclusion: This thematic diversity demonstrates the Communication and Health field's wealth and heterogeneity of topics. However, the low number of publications related to communication highlights the lack of scientific production on this matter in Collective Health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Emergency Medicine has its modern roots in the First World War. In Portugal, the first medical emergency system dates back to 1965. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) started operating in 1997. Objective: To inform about the history and current situation of the helicopter aeromedical transport of critically ill patients through the two major institutions in Portugal: the INEM and the Portuguese Air Force (FAP). Methodology: A qualitative historical study was conducted through documental analysis of the primary sources provided by the Portuguese Air Force and the National Institute of Medical Emergency, as well as the secondary sources. Results: The results suggest that the creation of a model for sharing air assets between various institutions leads to a more effective and efficient transport of critically ill patients. Conclusion: Further studies should be conducted to reveal the historical role played by the teams of physicians, nurses, commanders and pilots in Portugal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nursing Education requires innovative pedagogical processes, with strategies that promote the students’ learning in training contexts. These strategies should facilitate the students’ development in the care process. Aims: To analyse the conception of the care process in clinical teaching, using a specific computer strategy. Main topics for analysis: Thirty critical reflections of 4th-year nursing students were analysed using Microsoft Word 2010. Thirty-four words were selected based on three criteria: semantic meaning, frequency, and theoretical background. Three themes emerged from the students’ cognitive structure: conception of care, nursing intervention, and care process learning. Full-meaning words were identified: care, person, help, moments, assessment, intervention, skills, learning, and reflection. The identified words were represented in a concept map of the care process (CmapTools). Conclusion: The pedagogical process promotes a continuum in the students’ acquisition of skills. We identified the conception of the care process in theoretical training related to critical thinking in clinical teaching. Study implication: use of the concept map as a pedagogical strategy to promote self-reflection in students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Accidental falls remain the most reported incidents in hospital settings. This is a quality and safety issue for the patient which needs to be addressed by the hospital organisation. Nurses need to assess the risk of falling using scales. However, nurses are sometimes unsure of what is the most appropriate tool. Objective: To provide information on the two most commonly used scales for assessing the risk of falling, i.e., the St Thomas’s Risk Assessment Tool in Falling Elderly Inpatients (STRATIFY) and the Morse Fall Scale (MFS). Main topics for analysis: The fall risk assessment tools which were the subject of more systematic reviews and prospective validation in two or more cohorts, with appropriate tests to predict their validity, were analysed. The review concluded that both scales identify patients who are at risk of falling based on their intrinsic or clinical characteristics. Conclusion: Hospitals should use scales which have already been developed and tested for data comparison. These scales should be culturally and linguistically adapted, and validated for the Portuguese language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Within interpersonal relationships, romantic relationships take on a special meaning at the end of adolescence. Objectives: The main purpose of this methodological study was to translate and adapt the Relationship Questionnaire into the Portuguese culture. Methodology: A questionnaire (questions related to socio-demographic characteristics and romantic relationships, as well as the relationship questionnaire) was applied to a sample composed of 127 higher education students, obtained using a non-probability purposive sampling. Results: Results showed a 16-item scale, distributed into four factors (Possessive relationship, Controlling relationship, Demeaning relationship, and Destructive relationship), which explained 63.850% of the variance. The correlation matrix (χ²=840.544; p<.000) and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure (KMO=0.815) ensured the adequacy of the factor model. The scale showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.847). Data confirmed that the instrument is accurate, reliable and valid. Young people have healthy relationships, though female students have better relationships than male students. Conclusion: Results indicated that this is a reliable and valid questionnaire to assess romantic relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Raising a child is a challenge which demands great responsibility due to the complexity of necessary skills and knowledge, and implies not only deep changes in the couple’s social roles, but also a redefinition/reorganisation of life projects, with caregiving patterns that may influence the future parents-child interaction. Objective: To understand how the transition to parenthood is experienced during the child’s first six months. Methodology: Grounded Theory with the participation of five couples. Data collection based on semi-structured interviews. Results: The results describe the category embodying the father or mother figure, which is composed of the following subcategories: taking on male or female roles as caregivers, describing oneself as a father, describing oneself as a mother, perceiving one’s wife as a mother and perceiving one’s husband as a father. Conclusion: Parents are driven towards a polarisation of gender roles which defines and builds the meaning of being a good father/good mother, husband/wife and man/woman. Understanding these parental experiences is essential for nurses to be able to support parents during this transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Henri Fayol’s Classical Management Theory was based on an administrative vision marked by predictability, organisation, command, coordination, and control. To implement this administrative paradigm, fourteen general principles of management were defined. Objectives: To identify nurses’ representations of the current health administrative practices and analyse the extent to which these representations are in line with the principles of the Classical Management Theory. Methodology: Qualitative descriptive exploratory study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, with previously defined categories corresponding to the fourteen general principles of management. These interviews were conducted to eight nurses, with heterogeneous professional features and chosen by rational selection. Results: Interviewed nurses’ representations show that for them the current health administration is relatively close to the principles advocated by Fayol. Conclusion: The present study highlights that the discussion with nurses about changing the health work organisation is major when developing the best management strategies for the organisation of these professionals’ work. Background: Collaborative supervision explains the permanent transformation of professional practices from a coformative and developmental perspective. Objective: This study aims to identify the nurses’ conceptions of collaborative supervision and professional development in nursing care practice. Methodology: A qualitative empirical case study, including the Nursing team of an Internal Medicine unit of a Hospital Centre in Northern Portugal (N = 29). Data were obtained through document analysis, non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Results: Participants consider that collaborating means sharing, working in a team and helping the other, and that there are privileged collaborative moments in nursing care practice. Supervision emerges as a reality still apart from practice, and nurses tend to consider the supervisory process from a vertical perspective. As contributions to their professional development, nurses emphasise lifelong training, collaboration and the relationship between the person, the environment and the others. Conclusion: Despite the spontaneity and informality of both supervision and collaboration, these practices are closely related to the continuing professional development in Nursing. Background: The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência - SAMU), which is provided by the Brazilian Health System, is influenced by economic, political and symbolic determinants, making it a system of interests and an area of conflicts. Objectives: To understand how power practices shape relationships and professional boundaries at the SAMU of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Methodology: This is a qualitative case study based on the poststructuralist framework. Results: From the perspective of professional and territorial boundaries in the work performed at the SAMU, there are difficulties in recognising the group as a work team, while its discourses reinforce the historical dominance of the medical profession over the other professions. Conclusion: SAMU professionals struggle to identify and understand the thin line between their workspace and the workspace of others as their area of activity corresponds to the city as a whole. Setting its limit is a huge challenge due to the fragmentation of health services and the existing conflicts, which promote individualistic interventions that undermine the proposal to integrate the health care system. Background: Immigrant care provides nurses with a new way to look at themselves and those they care for. According to Leininger and Meleis, the interaction between them underlies the development of cultural competencies in nurses and a balanced experience of transition processes in immigrants. Objectives: To study the process of building cultural competencies in nurses based on the identification of the meanings assigned in dyads in health care settings (family health units and immigrants’ households). Methodology: This qualitative and ethnographic study mobilised the researcher to be present in loco with the participants. Data were collected using narratives, participant observation, ethno- -biographical interviews and focus groups with a group of volunteers selected from health care units: 23 nurses, 27 immigrants and 2 privileged informants (a cultural mediator and a physician). Results: In health care contexts, nurses’ cultural competencies are built in a procedural way. This process begins with their interaction with immigrants; nurses then identify deficit areas in their cultural knowledge and skills; and recognise the bilateral cultural heritage during those meetings. Conclusion: In nurses’ clinical practice, cultural awareness, combined with the motivation to take care of immigrants, is based on an evolutionary basis, from ethnocentrism to ethnic relativism. HISTORY of nursing , *SERIAL publications - Abstract
The purpose of ad usum et beneficium is to identify and disclose documents which, given their value and significance at a particular time, represent a contribution to the history of the profession. We wish to introduce O Enfermeiro Português, Revista dos Profissionaes de Enfermagem e propaganda do Gremio dos Enfermeiros de Terra e Mar do Norte de Portugal -- Associação de Classe (period 1929-1930). The first five issues of the Journal, published between 31st October, 1929, and 15th September, 1930, belonged to the private collection of Alberto da Silva Mourão, a distinct individuality of Portuguese Nursing, and were offered by his daughter, Professor Alda Mourão. Without looking in depth into the various topics that were addressed in each issue of the Journal, which may be searched according to each subject, the method of analysis of this work included the following components: description of reference data issue by issue; identification of different categories of information; and synthesis of some central topics that were recurrent throughout the main pages of the five issues. The various opinion texts focused on the common and persistent concerns of the end of 1929, such as nurses' lack of motivation, the injustices related to the recognition of the profession's value, the lack of rigour and standardisation of training programs, the moral and value crisis, and the abundance of healers and others acting as nurses who did nothing to help dignify the class. We do not know whether the Journal O Enfermeiro Português continued to be published or for how long, since we only have access to this specific collection. Anyone interested in expanding the historical study of the issues of that time period, which included the crisis of values, the disorganisation of the class, the crisis of leadership, the wars between classes and groups, and the legitimate longings of a high value class in a world of suffering, may consult the documents in the old books section of the Nursing School of Coimbra. Background: Urinary incontinence is considered a common health problem among women and has broad repercussions on female daily life. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of urinary incontinence in women in Brazil. Method: Systematic review of studies on the prevalence of urinary incontinence in women in Brazil, published in the last 12 years (2000 to 2012), in PubMed, LILACS and SciELO, using the terms "urinary incontinence", "prevalence" and "Brazil". As well as the references cited in the articles obtained thorough the primary search of the aforementioned databases. Results: After a thorough examination, 22 articles were included in the study, conducted in four Brazilian regions (Southeast- 11, South- 5, Northeast- 4, Midwest-2). The study samples ranged from 1256 to 32 women. The study ages ranged from 12 to 80 years. The prevalence of female urinary incontinence varied between 5,8% and 72%. Conclusion: Despite the variation the values of prevalence found, the prevalence of urinary incontinence in women in Brazil is high. Further investigations are needed to increase the scope of information available on the prevalence of urinary incontinence in Brazilian women, since the concentration of studies occurred in the Southeast region, especially in metropolitan regions. LANGUAGE & languages , *VERBS , *INFORMATION resources management , *SERIAL publications , *INFORMATION resources - Abstract
The study is based on the analysis of scientific publications on the area -books -and investigated the problems about the language. The analysis of the publications detected "gaps" in the language used in this area. It is observed the large quantity of manuals that directs the public to a technical practice of this professional, only working as a task executor. Considering this fact, it is important to change the language in manuals, since it constitutes individuals (professionals from the Executive Secretariat area), and it has, in this case, "built"characters dominated by the imperative verb and not being information managers. So, it is in this perspective as an information manager that we see a change in the identity of this professional, through the use of the language, since the language constitutes the character and, this way, the identity of the Executive Secretariat professional. Satisfaction surveys highlight the patient as an integral and essential part of health services, offering support in the management process and, therefore, point out some possible options for a rethink in the organization of work processes, aiming at continuous improvement of service. A ibliographical study that aimed to: identify the production of Brazilian and Latin American studies, published in the last five years, on the theme “user satisfaction with the service they received during hospitalization” in order to find evidence of (non) use of the Management Excellence model. Regarding the year of publication, for the 15 abstracts in this study it was observed that the theme of “user satisfaction with the service they received while in hospital” has been published with increasing frequency in recent years and that 2010 is the year with the most publications (40%). In the years 2006, 2007 and 2009 there were three publications (20%), and in 2008 one publication (6.66%). It is believed that the interest in the area is growing and, in the last two years, we have seen increasing interest in quality management programs. Most research on user satisfaction has covered just one of the following: the care of nursing staff, medical care, food provided during hospitalization, the attendance of other professionals. These approaches were fragmented, with the exception of a study about structures, processes and provides results with the Excellence Model Management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study with a central focus of analysis in facsimile posted on the magazine Fon-Fon on the Course of Nursing of Assistencia Nossa Senhora da Gloria. Analysis approach was through the perspective of historical-semiotic. Methodologically, the documents were written and imagery used, the latter being analyzed through a matrix analysis, and historically contextualized. The results showed a further course of Nurses before, probably unknown to researchers in the History of Nursing in Brazil, which increasingly must relativize the studies on this topic since the documentation of collections and many governments must be scrutinized to hit assertive.
