The meat complex represents one of the sectors with the highest incidence of rules and regulations on its trade flows. In this sense, this paper aims to verify: a) the effects of Sanitary and Phitosanitary Measures (SPS) and Tecnical Barriers to Trade (TBT) measures on exports of the meat complex; b) the effect of private standards on the referred trade flow; c) the relative importance of private standards and government regulations on trade flows. The method used in the paper was the gravity model estimated using Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML), with data from 2013 to 2018 for 111 exporting countries and 106 importing countries. The results showed a positive and significant effect of private standards on the meat trade, while government regulations did not have a significant effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to analyze the Turkish foreign policy towards the African continent in the 21st century. With the end of the Cold War and the world order centered on a bipolar logic, Turkey has had greater autonomy to manage its international relations, maintaining a more active foreign policy by expanding its economic, diplomatic, and security affairs beyond the West. In this context, under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), the African continent has come to occupy an increasingly prominent place in Turkish foreign relations. Thus, since the early 2000s, there has been a substantial increase in Turkey's presence on the continent, characterized, among other aspects, by the intensification of bilateral trade flows, the expansion of the diplomatic network on the continent, its participation in the mediation of conflicts and the offer of humanitarian assistance to African actors. In this context, and based on the literature on Middle Powers and Regional Powers, this paper discusses the intensification of Turkey's ties with African countries since the beginning of the 21st century, comprehending it as part of a broader international projection strategy. To this end, the study adopts a hermeneutic approach, relying on the literature review on Turkish-African relations and the analysis, supported by quantitative data, of the developments of these relations in the political, economic, and security axes throughout the period in question. This paper examines the complex relationship between macroeconomic policies, international trade practices, and sustainable development within the context of Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG12) - promoting sustainable consumption and production. The objective is to explore a path towards sustainable economic growth that balances economic progress and ecological sustainability. A comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities in aligning macroeconomic and trade policies with SDG12 is conducted, complemented by a meticulous review of literature, academic discourse, empirical evidence, and case studies from different countries. The methodology entails a systematic review of relevant literature, theoretical foundations, and empirical validations, including insightful case studies illustrating successful strategies employed by nations. Practical results demonstrate the potential for successful reconciliation between economic growth and environmental sustainability, offering replicable blueprints for other countries. The paper identifies areas of conflict and symbiosis between macroeconomic and trade policies concerning SDG12. In conclusion, achieving sustainable economic growth requires cohesive policy formulation, aligning macroeconomic and trade strategies with SDG12. The study proposes specific, implementable policy recommendations to guide countries towards a sustainable trajectory of economic growth while preserving the environment. ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the role of economic complexity in the ratio of Thirlwall’s elasticities, fundamental to understanding the reason for the unequal growth of countries. To this end, a theoretical model is used for a group of nations. Differences in growth rates among countries are associated with different ratios of income elasticities of exports and imports. According to econometric estimates, the country that manages to increase the economic complexity of its export basket, the investment/GDP ratio and has a lower GDP per capita improves the elasticities ratio and, therefore, its long-term growth. In other words, the results are categorical in the sense of demonstrating the central role of these policies for the country to advance in the process of structural change and move towards the production of more complex manufactured goods, because these can ensure sustainable economic growth, that is, compatible with the equilibrium of the balance of payments.

This paper seeks to explain how the border effect interfered in the Goiás trade negotiations in 2009. This effect was empirically estimated by Poisson Pseudo-Maximum-Likelihood (PPML) estimator, using sectional data for the 20 main international trading partners of the State of Goiás plus the 26 Brazilian federative units. Even though Goiás is expanding the commercialized products through public policy incentives and through the entrepreneurial capacity of economic agents, the results found in this study indicate that the products marketed by Goiás are mostly agroindustry and that the Goiás trade between the Brazilian federative units is many times greater than trade with international regions, thus indicating a strong home bias. The aim of this paper is to assess how the outbreak of the new coronavirus led to the contamination of major industries in the global economy and how the rapid political and fiscal response of several governments triggered and prolonged the recession while trying to save the lives of citizens. We also investigated the effect of social distance policies on the level of economic activities and on the prices of stock indexes. Data were collected from stock exchanges on four continents: North America, Africa, Asia and Europe. We extracted information from the stock market on the closing price (PF), lowest price (PB) and highest price (PMA) of the main stock market indicators on the four continents: the FTSE 500 index (United Kingdom); SP 500 (USA); Nikkei 225 (Japan); and the SA Top 40 index (South Africa). In the estimates, we adopted the natural logarithm of each price data to reduce the asymmetry observed in the distribution of stock price data. We concentrated the analysis in the period from January to May 2020, when the coronavirus started to spread to other countries and international markets. We empirically examine the impact of social distance policies on economic activities and stock market indices. The findings reveal that the increasing number of blocking days, monetary policy decisions and international travel restrictions have severely affected the level of economic activities and the closing, opening, lower and higher share prices of the main stock indexes. On the other hand, the restriction imposed on the domestic movement and the increase in spending on fiscal policies had a positive impact on the level of economic activities, although the growing number of confirmed cases of coronavirus virus did not significantly affect the level of economic activities. The discussion in this article contributes to the literature on financial crisis (eg, Allen & Carletti, 2010; Mian & Sufi, 2010; Stiglitz, 2010; Jagannathan, Kapoor & Schaumburg, 2013), as it shows that non-financial and / or non-economic factors they can trigger financial and economic collapse in unprecedented ways. The paper aims to analyze the composition of manufactured goods exports of 31 exporters to 26 importers in 2007 and 2014. We analyze the intensive, extensive and quality margins, proposed by Hummels and Klenow (2005), of the exported products classified by their predominant competitive factor. The results show that, in general, the United States, Germany, Japan, China and South Korea had above-average margins, different from Brazil with below-average results. Regarding the quality of exports, the United States, Germany and Japan presented higher margins than Brazil, China and South Korea. This paper discusses the current challenges of the multilateral trade system, which are reflected in the WTO Doha Round deadlock. The main patterns of trade have changed due to the rise of global value chains and the globalization of the world economy, characterized by an increasing dispersion and fragmentation of industrial production. The article discusses the way these changes are challenging traditional assumptions of the multilateral trade system and the WTO Doha Round negotiations. Taking Brazil as an example, the paper argues that the mismatch between the negotiating agenda and the new world trade realities dwells in the very WTO member countries, which, at a great extent, have not yet aligned its trade policies to the new dynamics of the international trade. Finally, we argue that during the last ten years Brazil's trade policy has not properly considered the important changes in the international trade patterns brought about by global value chains and economic globalization. Theories of international trade: a debate on the relationship between economic growth and foreign market insertion. The paper analyzes the importance accorded to the high technology industry sector in the process of economic growth, in its relation to international trade. Higher education is one of the sectors negotiable under the General Agreement on Trade in Services (Gats), one of the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements. This paper analyzes the consequences of this liberalization. Specifically, it assesses the legal impacts of Gats obligations for the pursuance of higher education policies by WTO Members. The paper argues that despite the potential effects of Gats, the way it works can be used to nullify or mitigate its effects, in accordance with the level of liberalization sought by each Member. This article deals with Huth & Co.'s activities in Chile during the 1820s-1850s. Huth was the only London merchant-banker that decided to go global before 1850, and also the only one to open a branch in Chile. The analysis of how his branches operated should take this into account, yet Huth's activities in Chile have only previously been examined using a bilateral approach to examine the economic relations between Chile and Britain. This situation was mainly due to the fact that the richest collection of primary material on Huth & Co. (the Huth papers at University College London) had been ignored by scholars working on Anglo-Chilean economic relations during the first half of the nineteenth-century. The main focus of this paper is on the information that we were made unaware of due to this restricted investigative approach. Among them are the connections established between Huth's branches in Chile and the USA, Asia, continental Europe and the rest of Latin America; and the important trade in Spanish quicksilver.El presente artículo trata sobre las actividades económicas en Chile de Huth & Co. durante el período 1820-1850. Huth & Co. fue el único mercader banquero de Londres que decidió tener una empresa global antes de 1850 y el único también en abrir una oficina en Chile. Por lo tanto, las actividades de la sucursal en Chile deben ser analizadas considerando estos dos importantes hechos. Sin embargo, antes de este estudio, las actividades de Huth en el país fueron examinadas usando un enfoque estrictamente bilateral de las relaciones entre Chile y Gran Bretaña. Esta visión restrictiva se debió en gran parte al desconocimiento de los historiadores interesados en las relaciones anglo-chilenas de una importante fuente de información: los archivos de Huth disponibles en el University College London. Debido a este desconocimiento, la historiografía no ha dado cuenta de importantes hechos tratado en este artículo. Por ejemplo, de las importantes conexiones establecidas por la sucursal de Huth en Chile con EE.UU., Asia, Europa continental y el resto de América Latina o sobre el importante comercio en azogue español.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo mensurar os efeitos quantitativos sobre as exportações de commodities agrícolas das cooperativas brasileiras em função de cenários diversos baseados nas possibilidades de negociação comercial que se colocam para o Brasil. Assim tem-se ênfase nas exportações de commodities onde há uma maior influência do movimento cooperativo. Um modelo computável de equilíbrio geral é utilizado para simular cenários alternativos de abertura comercial para a economia brasileira e seus impactos sobre os setores de interesse. Resultados de estudos anteriores também são considerados. Buscou-se identificar quais seriam os interesses maiores para as cooperativas do Brasil nas negociações desses acordos, considerando os impactos esperados sobre produção e fluxos comerciais. Os resultados mais favoráveis, considerando os cenários considerados e os setores de elevada participação das cooperativas podem ser resumidos como: uma liberalização multilateral parcial para os setores de aves e suínos e de soja, um acordo comercial Mercosul-UE para os setores de soja e café, e a Alca completa para o setor de café.Our goal in this paper is to evaluate the quantitative effects on exports of agricultural commodities of Brazilian cooperatives from several scenarios of possible trade agreements faced by Brazil. This paper is focused on exports of commodities under higher influence of cooperative firms. We use a computable general equilibrium model to simulate alternative scenarios of trade liberalization for Brazilian economy and their impacts on the sectors on focus. We also consider results from the previous studies. We seek to identify main interests to the Brazilian cooperatives on the negotiation of such agreements, considering impacts on production and the flow of trade. The best outcomes considering those sectors with high cooperative participation and trade agreements considered here could be summarized as: a partial multilateral liberalization for the poultry, pork and soybean sectors; an agreement Mercosul-EU for the soybean and coffee sectors; and full liberalization FTAA for the coffee sector.

This article discusses the importance of the exchange rate in the economic development process. After a brief discussion about this issue, the paper presents a historical vision of the exchange policy adopted in Brazil from 1995 until now. This policy took part in the stabilization macroeconomic program implemented in the country since then. Thus, we are discussing the main effects of the economic exchange policy over the industrial sector, highlighting the fact that there are some empirical evidences about the deindustrialization process in Brazil nowadays. What could explain it is the behavior of the share of technological content of the products that compose the international trade of the country.
