GENDER , *RISK perception , *CONSUMER behavior , *COUNTRIES , *DRUGS , *HUMAN behavior , *PERCEIVED benefit , *HEALTH services accessibility - Abstract
Purpose: Are men more inclined to assume risks than women? The answer to this question is immediately relevant to various economic issues, including human behavior concerning medical remedies and procedures consumption. This paper aims to identify the perceived benefits of the consumption of medications centered on pharmaceutical risk assessment. Originality/value: The literature documents that risks and benefits can be considered the main trade-offs in consumer decision-making, including the pharmaceutical industry. It is a current theme with a high potential for social impact due to the many identified cases of Covid-19. In developing countries, most medication is used by self-medicating individuals, as access to health care can be insufficient. Self-medication is a potentially greater problem, as in this case, medication usage often follows advice from friends, relatives, and neighbors. Yet, there is little empirical evidence regarding this problem in the context of emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach: A survey of over 1,000 subjects using an extended regression model (ERM) in one of the biggest countries in the world, Brazil. Findings: The results reported that women perceive more risks and benefits from medication usage and medical procedures. The perception of the benefits of medications can be explained by the following dimensions: risk (personal injury, risk alertness, and risk awareness), gender, regular usage, and the benefits of medical procedures. Regarding risk dimensions, the lower the perceptions of personal injury and the higher the perceptions of risk alertness and risk awareness, the greater the perceived benefits of medication usage. ANTHROPOLOGY , *DRUG utilization , *GENEALOGY , *SOCIOCULTURAL factors , *ANTHROPOLOGISTS , *DETERMINISM (Philosophy) - Abstract
This paper presents a discussion on how Anthropology looks at the use of drugs and the people who use them, tracing a short genealogy of the sociocultural perspective that a large part of the anthropologists who study the subject are affiliated with, as opposed to other forms of understanding the phenomenon, closer to pharmacological determinism. Medical Anthropology's framework and critical stance are highlighted, arguing that deconstructionism and criticism of medicalization and pathologization can and should be applied to the study of drugs. Abstract In 1921, Decree 4,294 defined prohibitionism as the referential model of state response to drugs in Brazil. One century later, not only is the approach still enshrined in national legislation but also materialized in a complex institutional and bureaucratic network of governance and public policies. This paper examines the evolution of drug policies in Brazil over the past century, exploring how a web of normative, political, and institutional devices converged to entrench the hegemony of the prohibitionist approach in public responses to drugs. A systematic analysis of national and international legislation reveals that the prohibitionist enterprise was successful in Brazil due to two factors: i) as an ideational set, it was integrated into structuring discursive fields of Brazilian political culture, dialoguing with the stigmatization of marginalized populations and criminalization of their practices; and ii) as an ordering principle of public policy, it has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, incorporating elements of alternative models into its framework without compromising its fundamental structures. Political innovations implemented in Brazil since the 1990s (especially decriminalization and damage reduction models) have been able to neither shake the definition of drugs as a moral and criminal problem, nor prevent its instrumentalization as a policy of socio-spatial control of lower classes.

- Abstract
This paper describes and analyses the development of psychotropic actors and territories from the early 90's until today, based on two ethnographies carried out in the city of Porto (Portugal). The second ethnography, currently ongoing, is a revisitation of the first one, which was undertaken by one of the authors in the 90's. In both ethnographies, the research units are territories located in housing estates - or their surroundings - in which there is a concentration of individuals with commercial or consumptive interests in drugs. Both studies portray the territorial dynamics of the drugs phenomenon, as well as its main protagonists in psychotropic territories that the media describe as "drug neighborhoods". We explore the phenomenology of the "junkie", describing his/her practices and ways of living, the functions he/she may perform in the operation of the psychotropic territory, and the strategies he/she develops to finance his/her drug use. The current actors' sociographic profile is similar to the one described in the first study, the difference being that in the past there were many younger individuals. Regarding the psychotropic territories, this revisitation authorizes stating the stability of their characteristics and operation; their longevity in terms of location, dynamics and functions; their great resistance to police charges. - Abstract
Introduction: adverse drug reactions are an important problem in the practice of health professionals, since these reactions may cause hospitalization, increase in length of hospital stay and morbidity and mortality. Many adverse drug reactions occur in the oral cavity. Objective: to describe the main drugs with potential side effects in the oral cavity, grouping those that cause similar adverse effects. Methods: bibliographic and descriptive study through use of original studies from three databases: SciELO, PubMed and LILACS. Selected papers were in Portuguese, English and Spanish, which included literature reviews, meta-analysis and case reports published between 2000 and 2015. The terms used were: oral medications and manifestations, oral lesions and medicines, oral mucosa and drugs and adverse drug reaction in the oral cavity. Results and Discussion: nineteen articles were analyzed in detail and case reports were predominant. Several drugs have been associated with pathological changes in oral tissue, in particular drugs used in oncology and those acting on the central nervous system. Adverse drug reactions depend on the medication and are quite variable. Among the found reaction are: ulcerative mucosa, gingival hyperplasia, xerostomia and decreased salivary flow. Conclusion: some lesions are common to different drugs, making critical the proper observation of possible sequelae associated with drug therapy. Detailed anamnesis with a complete medical history of the patient is essential for the proper diagnosis and a better therapeutic decision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Drug use in adolescence is a complex and multifaceted problem that is influenced by individual, familiar, peer group and contextual aspects. The family has been a highlighted aspect in the literature, both due to its importance in providing conditions for a healthy development in adolescence as to the need of participating on interventions aiming to overcome difficulties. This paper presents a systematic review of studies which investigated the links between drug use in adolescence and family aspects. Two databases were consulted - Scielo and Redalyc - searching for the terms adolescence, drug addiction and family. Were selected 22 articles, and they were analyzed using frequency distributions and content analysis. The results indicated that the family has been considered a risk or protection factor for drug use in adolescence, according to how its role is played. Aspects such as dialogue, family monitoring and the use of drugs by friends or family are aspects highlighted in the literature. In conclusion, the importance of family participation on prevention interventions or coping with drug use in adolescence is emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the thalidomide disaster1961 many accounts of pre-thalidomide drug safety history appeared. Some identified events which represented missed opportunities or ignored warning signs. This paper reviews three assertions made in these accounts; that an opportunity to introduce a spontaneous reporting system for suspected adverse drug reactions in 1893 was missed; that concerns about dangers of drugs in pregnancy identified in 1904 were ignored; and that a proposal to establish a drug regulatory body made in 1914 was abandoned. The paper concludes that even if all had been acted upon it is unlikely that the thalidomide disaster could have been entirely avoided. http://dx.doi.org/10.14195/1647-6336_14_3

This paper analyzes the relationship between State and NGOs within the Recomeço public policy, a São Paulo State Government's anti-drugs program. The Secretariat for Social Development of São Paulo provides social reintegration and recovery of the target audience - people who have had addiction problems - through a therapeutic community system, coordinated by an NGO, FEBRACT. Through a series of interviews, field visits and primary sources, it was perceived some heterogeneity in the management capacity of the organizations. Furthermore, the inspection system was regarded as bureaucratic and unable to improve therapeutic communities' services. To promote a better public policy, this paper proposed an instrument to foster internal changes within the therapeutic communities, including better management and the creation of supervisory practices between FEBRACT and Therapeutic Communities.

Since the creation of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in 2008, its members evidence an endogenous contradiction in relation to the illegal drug issue. While on one hand they are demanding a new approach to the world drug issue, focused on human rights and promoting initiatives oriented to harm reduction; on the other hand, many of them are implementing internal punitive measures, based on a supply-centric strategy and criminalization of drug users. This article analyzes some important factors that increase and constrain the coordination of a joint position among South American states on the illegal drug topic through the definition of two approaches —uniaxial and multiaxial—. Those approaches are characterized by the different consideration of three elements: the current legislation that affects the states’ behavior in relation to this issue; the dimensions of the problem; and the actors who try to exercise an influence on —and at the same time are influenced by— both the legislation and the dimensions. This paper also argues that a multiaxial cooperation dynamic could represent a useful long-term strategy to counterbalance the negative spillover effects of a uniaxial war on drugs policy.

This paper analyses the role of religious therapeutic communities in recovering and rehabilitating drug users, taking the Manguinhos complex of slums in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the case. The study used a qualitative approach through interviews, participant observation and institutional materials. The technique of analysis of enunciation was applied in order to interpret the material. There is a strong presence of religious institutions that aim to form therapeutic communities for treating drug dependence. The main forms of recovery and rehabilitation comprise evangelization and religious conversion. Faith-based therapeutic communities conceptualize a treatment model focused on prayer and abstinence, which is a view at odds with public mental health policies. However, the public infrastructure has been unable to make effective responses to the demand. The controversy generated by this issue closes this paper.

Abstract The ‘war on drugs’ promoted in Brazil has gained prominence in psychology research due to the ensuing significant number of deaths. By describing the five first meetings held with teenagers, the researchers highlight some similarities and differences between the described phenomenon and what Clausewitz and Foucault call ‘war.’ To this end, after describing the field research, the paper discusses three theoretical points: Clausewitz’s thesis that war is the continuation of politics; Foucault’s inversion, which sustain state racism; and an in-depth psychoanalysis of the various forms of conflict under the umbrella-term ‘war.’ In conclusion, this analysis point out the war going on in Brazil as a consequence of the exclusionary political system, denounced by youths involved in drug trafficking.

This study aimed to build an overview of the prevention of drug abuse carried out in the school environment. To achieve the objective, we carried out an integrative review of the scientific literature, based on the SciELO Brazil online database, covering the time interval from 2011 to 2021. For the selection of articles we used three intersections of keywords: (i) drugs, prevention and education; (ii) drugs, prevention and education; (iii) drugs, prevention and school. After the screening of articles, through the mobilization of exclusion criteria, we selected 18 papers. Our analyzes focused on three aspects, the role of the school in the prevention of drug use, programs and pedagogical interventions focused on the prevention of drug misuse, and the perspective of the actors involved on the preventive actions developed in the school. We found that the school, now considered as a place of intellectual formation and social identity, is a favorable space for the development of preventive actions, with satisfactory results, despite the challenges posed., Este estudo teve como finalidade construir um panorama geral sobre a prevenção ao uso indevido de drogas realizada no ambiente escolar.
