2. Os Portugueses No Sudoeste Da Nova Inglaterra E A Sua Literatura Infantil (The Portuguese in Southeast New England and Their Children's Literature).

Abstract

The four sections of this paper deal with Portuguese immigrants in southeast New England and with Portuguese-language children's literature. The first section contains a description of Portuguese immigration to the United States from 1511 to the present and notes changes in immigration laws. The second section presents descriptions of the different periods of Portuguese literature from 1198 to the present, and its influence on children's literature. It also contains reviews of the works of more than 30 authors, along with biographical notes. In addition, this section analyzes the impact of the Portuguese National Revolution of 1926 on writers of children's books. End notes provide information on publishers of such books in Portugal. The third section deals with children's literature in Brazil. It reviews more than 50 writers, providing biographical information as well as listings of their works. Mention is also made of illustrators, translators, and adaptors, and publishers who have influenced Portuguese books for children. The final section contains a survey of the existing collections of Portuguese-language children's books in three New England cities. It describes the "Casa de Saudade," the location of the largest collection of Portuguese-language books in the United States and concludes with a survey of radio stations, newspapers, bookstores, libraries, and businesses as to their contributions to children's culture. 4. The Interplay of Code, Message and Context in the Acquisition of Portuguese Syntax.

Abstract

The methodology reported in this paper argues for a synthesis of various theories and methods. First, a synopsis is given of the pedagogical and linguistic approaches that should underlie a successful attempt to teach the contrast in two verb tenses in Portuguese. Secondly, a contrast unique to Portuguese is examined and a multistage approach for teaching the contrast is suggested. The theories and approaches reviewed are: (1) Roman Jakobson's model of the speech event, a model that stresses the multifaceted nature of the speech event; (2) the notional-functional approach, which stresses the interaction of social context and grammatical form; (3) contributions of American linguistics, especially structuralism and Chomsky's generative theory; and (4) the audiolingual approach. The second part of the paper examines the preterite vs. the present perfect contrast and suggests a sequence for presenting these two tenses, based on the theories discussed. It is suggested that the tenses be taught first in isolation, then the contrast between them and finally the task of integrating the tenses into the overall tense system. 6. Prolegomenos a um estudo da lingua brasileira nos terreiros de origem africana (Prolegomena to a Study of the Brazilian Language of the Voodoo Rites of African Origin).

Abstract

Determination of the authenticity of lexical items with Sub-Saharan origin in the voodoo rites of candomble and umbanda in Brazil requires establishing a socio-historical basis for the African diaspora and the current configuration of terreiros. The terreiros demonstrate varying linguistic repertoires according to their affiliation with candomble or umbanda. The terreiros may be of three types 1) yoruban (Nago) in Bahia and Recife; 2) Fon in Sao Luis; and 3) Bantu in the oldest layers of umbanda, the caboclo candombles of Bahia, and the Northeastern cantimbo, the latter being the least apparent. Umbanda has lost a greater amount of Sub-Saharan traditions and contains more Bantu elements, although they appear less frequently since they are in the oldest layers of umbanda. The task of determining the African origins of linguistic data is complicated by pragmatic factors such as the existence of phonological correspondence without accompanying semantic correspondence, the difficulty of determining the meaning of a word in a given text and of tracing which Sub-Saharan language influenced which terreiro, and the scarcity of dictionaries and grammars of Sub-Saharan languages brought to Brazil by the slaves. This dual-language (Portuguese and English) collection of autobiographical writing by refugees from Angolan children and young adults living in Britain is illustrated with photographs and children's drawings and includes comprehensive country introductions. In the collection, young people give their accounts of migration and explore how their identities are changing in their new country. The writings can be a useful resource for teachers, particularly those who want to bring a global dimension to learning. Following the "Factbox" (country introduction) and a general introduction for teachers that provides historical background on Angola, the collection is divided into the following sections and each includes several writings: (1) "Lembrancas de Angola" ("Memories of Angola"); (2)"Familia" ("Family"); (3) "Guerra" ("War"); (4) "Deixando Angola" ("Leaving Angola"); (5) "A Vida na Inglaterra" ("Life in Britain"); and (6)"A Vida de Refugiado" ("Life as a Refugee"). 12. Early Childhood Education and Care Policy in Portugal = A Educacao Pre-Escolar e os Cuidados para a Infancia em Portugal.

Abstract

Based on the view that the rapid expansion and development of preschool education requires careful scrutiny of both educational policy and practices, this book presents information on current early childhood education and care policy in Portugal. Section 1 of the book provides a historical framework for the development of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Portugal, definitions of relevant terms, the types of current ECEC provisions, and the context influencing ECEC policies and practices. Section 2 defines policies related to educational quality and program accessibility. Section 3 presents policy approaches with regard to regulations, staff, program content and implementation, participation and support to families, and funding. Included in this section are descriptions of programs in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and Acores. Section 4 presents information on program evaluation and research in Portugal. Section 5 asserts that the government of Portugal has made a clear investment policy in education as a whole, with particular emphasis in preschool education. The section presents objectives related to preschool attendance and program quality, and identifies challenges for program development. The book concludes with a glossary and a list of abbreviations. Appendices include graphic displays of statistical indicators for Portugal and European Union countries, and the paper "Early Childhood Education and Care Policy In Portugal: OECD Country Note," which identifies the progress made in Portugal and the difficulties still hindering achievement of objectives regarding care and education of children from birth to compulsory school age. 14. Ter/Haver-Existential Clauses in Brazilian Portuguese: Variation and Change.

Abstract

This paper discusses the details of existential sentences constructed with the Portuguese verbs "ter" and "haver" in the interpersonal form. The uses of these verbs are discussed and analyzed in detail. The history and evolution of linguistic changes in Brazilian Portuguese are discussed in an attempt to detect historical social and cultural factors responsible for the variation in existential sentences.
