This paper presents the main trends and the most important challenges related to the use of classical and modern statistical methods in economic research. The first part describes the key changes in quantitative economic and social research, including those related to technological progress. The main features of this evolution are the development of research infrastructure and changes in relations between researchers. The second discusses the need to find a compromise between easily accessible statistical data sets, advanced statistical software to analyse them, and the formal requirements of statistical inference. The third part details the essence and principles of statistical learning and presents a panorama of statistical learning methods. This results in the formulation of a paradigm of statistical learning for conducting modern statistical research.

The aim of this text is a critical analysis of current developments and potential applications of quantitative methods in film studies. Within its scope, a concise reconstruction of the methodological foundations, historical development, and key achievements of statistical, experimental, and digital humanities tools in relation to audiovisual media research is conducted. This involves a review of the phenomena that have developed so far as well as a philosophical consideration of the sources, consequences, and potential limitations of quantitative thinking in an area traditionally occupied by the humanities. Quantitative methods are not considered here as a replacement for existing paradigms, but rather as their complement, extension, and often inspiration. This allows to understand the current transformations but also integrate them with traditional research approaches, and identify the pitfalls and difficulties associated with this paradigm shift.

Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to present and discuss the application of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) in accounting research. Following an overview of the terminology, statistical concepts, and software used in SEM, the results of a systematic review of the accounting literature are presented, with a focus on the benefits and challenges identified in prior studies. Methodology/approach: This paper is based on a traditional literature review, which helps to demonstrate SEM as a research technique. It is also based on a systematic literature review, which is used to present previous applications of SEM in accounting studies. Findings: SEM offers the possibility to model statistically complex theoretical issues using specialised software. It is a flexible and universal approach used by quantitative accounting scholars to test and develop theories. SEM research is heterogeneous and encompasses different research strategies, theories tested, branches of accounting, data collection methods, and types of statistical analyses. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation of this study is that the complexity of SEM statistical analyses cannot be discussed in detail within the scope of this paper. Originality/value: SEM is gaining popularity among accounting scholars; however, it is not widely used by Polish researchers. Therefore, this paper is a kind of invitation to quantitative scholars to examine SEM and its potential. It is also a contribution to the current discussions on the automation of research processes.

This article is devoted to the diagnosis of problems arising from risk management obligations under the safety management system implemented in civil organisations of certified air operators (carriers). Focus was on the use of quantitative methods in safety risk analysis. The idea of an approach to determine the probability of accidents and serious incidents based on the intensity of symptoms with lower consequences and risk factors as a function of time or number of performed air operations was proposed, based on Markov discrete processes [6,10-12,16]. The essence of this approach is explained by the mathematical model of Runway Excursion probability during landing operations. The concept of improvement of operators' cooperation in the exchange of information about safety indicators by profiling the organisation was presented. The last proposal concerns the construction of a comprehensive risk assessment indicator using a safety risk matrix.

In 1981, the French sociologist Alain Touraine (with a group of Polish young sociologists led by the veteran of Polish sociology – Jan Strzelecki), conducted a famous research on the Solidarity Movement with the use of a new and distinct method of investigation called “sociological intervention.” It was the first time that Polish sociologists, who were trained in a specific combination of Marxist and positivist traditions, had experienced this kind of ‘hard’ qualitative methodology. The reactions were mixed and the general approach was rather cautious. Nevertheless, the sociological intervention method has since been used several times by Polish scientists. The aim of this paper is to summarize these experiences.

- Abstract
The topic of the article is a description of the research conducted on the corpus of titles of scientific publications in the field of linguistics, published in the series "Language and Culture". The article analyses their structure, function and persuasive effectiveness. The latter was examined taking into account the reception, measured by quantitative indicators (number of downloads from the free web service), and quantifiable structural features (level of difficulty, readability, length of elements). The purpose of the analysis was to determine whether the language structure of scientific article titles affects their readership. Research results indicate that the success of a scientific publication is primarily determined by its content and author's prestige, and to a small extent by the title. This distinguishes the scientific communication circulation from popular circulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. THE CATEGORY OF GENERATION IN POLISH LINGUISTIC STUDIES (CURRENT STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES)

Generation ,Generational Variance of the Polish Language ,Quantitative Methods ,Language and Literature - Abstract
In linguistic studies, a generation is understood as “a group of people who are more or less the same age (Dubisz red. 2003, t. 3: 298 )”. It is assumed that the linguistic memory, the knowledge of linguistic conventions, the ability to take notice of nuances in one's language is the only and unique cultural heritage that is difficult to learn and is passed from generation to generation, albeit with smaller or bigger modifications. Such modifications are the reason why the language is differentiated in generational terms, and it is the age that plays the principal role in that differentiation. Apart from the biological criterion, the geographic one, that is the area of a specific region, determinates the distinct features in the speech of generations. The analysis of differences in speech of generations allows determining the direction, nature, pace, mechanism of and reasons for linguistic changes. Generally, scientists focus on phonetic, lexical, and morphological differences shown in the language spoken by people from different generations. In Poland, the studies of differences in the speech of generations are at an introductory stage. The reconnaissance of the research area has been carried out, and basic determinations have been made, but the scope of analysis seems to be too narrow. A research perspective would be to use the quantitative indicators that are showing now and will show in the future that the common sense assumptions about specific frequency ratios between parts of speech, an increase in complexity of utterances and their lexical wealth concurrent with age does not need to be corroborated by empirical research. It is also advisable to analyse the differences in speech of one generation, especially the medium-age or old-age generation, in terms of sex, education, living, and other possible parameters. It will give the answer to the question to what extent the speech of people from a specific generation is a linguistic monolith, and to what extent it is a collection of idiolects.

Globalisation in education sector, intense competition between universities in Latvia, increase in requirements of applied teaching from private companies, growing exactingness from students - it all makes base to improve University curricula using different active teaching techniques for better knowledge capture. In the case study of University of Latvia tourism study programme authors included practice of active teaching method application used to improve student understanding and competences including research, surveys, observations, shadowing, monitoring and register of the tourist tracks, expert interviews and industry seminars, discussions and interviews with industry stakeholders, field trips, different tourism sector enterprise and organisation visits inspections, colloquiums, research result presentations in seminars and conferences, knowledge enhancing for sustainability, best practices and systems used by other countries. Many of active learning methods are as additional activities for students not included in the compulsory part of studies, therefore it is needed to establish an additional separate entity for tourism and sustainability activities for applied teaching and research at university - Tourism and Sustainability Research Laboratory. Separate research entity gives possibility to involve interested students from different study programmes and cooperation with other faculties.(original abstract)

The article presents some proposals that might contribute towards improving quality while results of statistical analyses are presented in Polish publications within history and related disciplines. According to the author nowadays there are no clear standards determining the rules of such presentations, which often leads to a limited comparability of results and makes it impossible to apply the techniques of data meta-analysis, and insome cases also leads to serious methodological errors. The proposals included in the text consists of the following postulates: 1) to inform the reader of the number of the populations and subpopulations investigated; 2) to make a greater use of statistical measures that describe the distribution of the analysed communities; 3) to standardise the convention of recording such measures; 4) to inform the reader about the size of the standard errors; 5) to apply the commonly accepted rules concerning data grouping; 6) to take into account the spatial dimension of the analysed phenomenon, which should be presented in the form of maps and plans; 7) to urge the authors of academic texts to make public their data sets.

Modern research methods of economic development of regions and cities pay special attention to the position of the units in the area expressed by geographical position, the distance between the tested individuals and neighbourhood, especially near places with significant economic potential. Modeling of spatial mobility of residents through the use of methods based on identifying the forces affecting positively and negatively on the movement of people in an organized space let us to find places attractive to a large number of citizens. The article presents the use of intervening opportunities model in order to generate a distribution of travel to work and to determine the diversity of individual attractiveness due to the offer of jobs and position in transportation network. Modeling was made for the set of cities. Because situation in cities should be compared with situation in their environment occurrence of spatial relationships and clusters in gminas of West Pomerania region was detected by using Moran’s I statistic. The analysis covers the area of West Pomerania and its surrounding. This is a specific area where the differentiation of the level of development is particularly dependent on the position in geographical space.

statistics ,corpus linguistics ,linguistics ,research methodology ,quantitative methods ,programming - Abstract
This chapter offers a refl ection on the state-of-the-art and the future of linguistics. In the light of rapid development and growing popularity of quantitative, statistical research methods, the author refl ects upon their impact on contemporary linguistics (notably corpus linguistics), notably as regards methodology and linguistic data analysis. An attempt is also made in this paper to ruminate over the skills required from linguists regarding current publication standards in top-notch journals and research quality requirements. The discussion focuses on statistics and programming skills as more and more studies make ample use of various statistical metrics and computational tools. The author concludes that there are no conclusive answers to those problems as this all depends on the researcher’s needs, available collaboration opportunities and specifi city of research. It is hoped that the paper offers some food for thought regarding the present and the future of linguistics.

The purpose of the article is to describe main assumptions and practical application of logistic regression in the European Union studies. Logistic regression is one of statistical methods which enables to verify theories, understood as a set of hypotheses, together with the determination of their predictive power. The first section of the article defines the statistical procedure of hypotheses verification which is the basis of above-mentioned method. In the second chapter fundamental assumptions of logistic regression are mathematically characterized. The third chapter includes the course of hypotheses testing in this method, which can be came down to three groups of tests: goodness of fit of the theory, statistical significance of predictors and predictive power of theory. The fourth chapter presents an example of the application of logistic regression in assessing the impact of certain factors on the ministers involvement in the Council decision-making.

quantitative methods ,marketing research - Abstract
This article presents the results of a research project that aimed at evaluating the extent to which quantitative methods are being implemented in marketing research in Poland. The analysis was based on interviews carried out in 2004 with representatives of chosen social and marketing research agencies. Our goal 70 Jolanta Perek-Białas i Urszula Korzeniecka was to find out which of the quantitative methods are commonly used in marketing research in Poland and which ones are not, and to identify the possible reasons for that. According to our analysis, apart of simple statistical techniques (e.g. crosstabs, testing hypotheses), more advanced methods are used such as conjoint analysis (as it was mentioned by one of the respondents "truly speaking it is in vogue". We conclude that the more advanced marketing techniques of analysis will be needed, the more clients will learn and understand the purpose and use of specific methods.
