The article discusses the fragment of Balzac’s short story Gambara in which the titular character discusses his opera. The focal point of this article is a character from the opera written by Paolo Gambara – Muhammad. The elements used to build the character (character traits, transformations, biography, relationships with his environment, actions, emotions etc.) were analysed in the context of the musical means used to present them and of the entire short story. The background of this analysis consists of a short overview of the philosophical ideas about music and science expressed by Gambara in order to better present the sources of his ideas and the musical solutions that he used.

W artykule skoncentrowano się na dyskursach o muzyce, które są obecne w Wyznaniach Augustyna - dziele wyróżniającym się na tle innych tekstów autora ze względu na swój niejednorodny (autobiograficzny, filozoficzny, teologiczny) charakter. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie relacji, którą można określić jako niedokonany projekt racjonalizacji myślenia o muzyce. Po pierwsze, w tekście widoczny jest wpływ greckiego sposobu myślenia, zgodnie z którym sztuka ta stanowi odbicie matematycznego porządku wszech- świata, będąc całkowicie podporządkowana rozumowej harmonii, a także ethosowi, regulującemu jej funkcjonowanie w społeczeństwie. Pod tym względem Wyznania można porównać do dzieł filozoficznych Augustyna, w których ta koncepcja dominuje. Augustyn, jako chrześcijanin, włącza do swojej myśli także hebrajskie dziedzictwo pojmowania muzyki, na czele z Księgą Psalmów. Autor artykułu stara się wydobyć ten drugi dyskurs jako mniej znany rys myśli Augustyna i pokazać, jak kwestionuje on i dekonstruuje zamiar racjonalizacji muzyki. The article concerns the discourses about music, which can be found in Augustine’s Confessions - the work, which distinguish itself by its multi-faceted (autobiographical, philosophical, theological) character. The aim of the paper is to analyze their relation, which can be described as undone project of rationalization of the understanding of music. On the one hand, the Confessions presents explicit Greek influence, which sees music as reflection of cosmic, completely rational order and certain ethos, regulating its functioning in society. In that respect, Confessions could be compared with Augustine’s philosophical works, where that idea dominates. Augustine, as a Christian, also includes in his concepts the Hebrew tradition of understanding the music, rooted mainly in Psalms, expressing emotional and existential approach to the music. The article aims to expose the second discourse, as less known characteristic of the Augustine's thought, and to show how it questions and deconstructs the project of rationalization of music.

Gŭqín, starożytny, chiński instrument strunowy sam w sobie jest zjawiskiem niezwykłym. Prawdopodobnie jest najstarszym instrumentem solowym, zachowanym do naszych czasów w formie nie zmienionej, co najmniej od 2500 lat. Wraz z upływem czasu instrument i muzyka na nim wykonywana obrosły w symbolikę nadającą sztuce gry na gŭqín wymiar kosmologiczny i filozoficzny. Gŭqín stał się jednym z atrybutów chińskiego mędrca-filozofa, a zrozumienie znaczenia instrumentu stało się obowiązkowym elementem wykształcenia człowieka szlachetnego. Wokół instrumentu wyrosła ideologia/filozofia czyniąca z niego symbol elegancji, wyrafinowania, delikatności i piękna. Jak i również mądrości. Gŭqín ancient chinese string instrument is phenomenon by itself. Probably it is oldest solo instrument, preserved in its orginal form to the present times at least since 2500 years. With time the instrument and his music were enriched with symbolism which gave the music of Gŭqín cosmological and philosophical dimension. Gŭqín became one of the attribute of Chinese sage-philosopher and understanding of meaning of instrument was obligatory element of education of noble man. The study is devoted to Miloš Forman’s film, a story about Mozart’s life, taken from Peter Shaffer’s drama. The author proposes a detailed analysis of Forman’s film as an autonomous work in the production of which the film was a medium. The film was an effect of collaboration between the author of the play and the director. The effect of the work is a film which is an example of a close connection of the form and the content – harmony between picture and music, which becomes almost one of the main characters. Individual compositions of Mozart form a network of motives closely connected with the visual aspect and make its sense deeper according to several rules of showing music as a part of the film medium, such as musical motives, explaining the music by the composer or music which uses media. Connecting the music and the aesthetics of the film make Amadeus a harmonious audio-visual performance.
